From Me To You... It’s January already and you know what that means? Resolutions! Ideas of things you want to improve upon, or achieve, in the next calendar year.

I usually try not to make any resolutions because I feel I am setting myself up for failure. If they were things I could do, wouldn’t I already be doing them? However, I am always up for a good challenge, so this year I am determined to try and run a 5k. Oh boy, now I’ve put it out there for everyone to see. I have many friends who run, they do 5ks, 10ks and I even know a couple who ran a marathon this year. (Well she was disappointed in herself as she only did the half because she had no time to train, but for heavens sakes if I could run 13 miles without training I would be pleased as punch!) In order to see if 5 kilometers was even possible I tried running 3 to start. I would say I managed 2/3s of it at a decent pace and had to walk the rest. In my humble opinion that’s how far a normal person goes without training. In theory I am fit enough to do the race, but my stamina is what gets me. I have been working out consistently over the last year and my strength has improved dramatically (not to brag but I can lift over 100lbs with my legs and a whopping 45lbs with my puny arms) and health-wise I am ready. Now I have to increase the dreaded cardio to get my lungs to stop screaming at the mile mark. I have done a 5k in the past, but I think I was so traumatized by the experience it has me a little gun shy. I signed up for the Gladiator 5k Fun Run for charity - and to be honest because my friend and I had drunk a glass of wine or two and thought it would be a great idea. We planned on training and of course did nothing to prepare. So when the day loomed over me, I knew I was in trouble. When I got to the course and realized Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine

it was a 5k up into the Estrellas before the 17 obstacles my stomach plummeted. I had no choice at that point, it was run or get trampled under the enthusiastic feet of the other runners. I got through the race and thought the easy part was in front of me. Boy was I wrong, here came the obstacles. The first obstacle was a swim under logs in a pool filled with water and ice. Ice! Fine. Then came a tunnel. In the ground. I took one look at the tiny hole in the ground and thought, “There is no way I can fit in there!” But I did. And then I found some relief. It was quiet and dark in there. No-one to see if I was moving. So I rested my head and relaxed. Until I heard the next contestant behind me army crawling towards my refuge. The race ended with a leap over a fire pit. At that point I couldn’t imagine jumping over anything but somehow I managed. I am determined to train and not to repeat my mistakes next time. One might even call that a resolution.

Peace On Earth Choose to Speak with Grace

“Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” (Colossians 4:6) The idea for this article came from a story in the November 5 Upper Room devotion. A line had formed at the post office. As happens at times, people began to grumble about the slow service. A businessman spoke up sharing that he was on his way to the airport for a flight. Yet, he said, “It’s not so bad. I believe I’ll make my flight on time.” His comment could have been a breath of fresh air, but instead the people began to grumble about the air lines and late planes. Again, the businessman spoke up, calmly saying that he flew every week and he felt the airlines did quite well. He then began to entertain the people with travel stories. What do you do when you are with others who grumble and complain? It is very easy to join in. One starts in on teachers, or police, or a political party, and soon everyone has a negative comment to add. Sometimes there is competition to

see who can tell the most outrageous account. But, why? Why do we focus on the negative?

I have had negative experiences just like you. However, I’ve also had far more positive encounters. What leads us to share the negative when we can just as readily share the positive? Imagine the people in the line at the post office. If the conversation remained focused on the negative, what attitudes would people have carried with them as they left? I believe they’d leave grumpy and predisposed to notice more negative things. They hop in their car, drive away, and begin to criticize the drivers around them, the potholes, the weather, and the length of the red light. Pretty soon it feels like everyone is out to get them! Ok, maybe that is extreme – or is it? Now, imagine the group who left the line described above. I believe their wait time felt shorter and they left thinking about the travel stories they heard. They don’t notice the length of the red light, because they are mentally entertained. They are more tolerant of other drivers and less likely to react with road rage. They have a new story to share during the office coffee break. I think I’d rather hang with this group. Our words are important. We can heal or wound with just a few syllables. Let’s choose to speak with grace. Let’s help redirect negative conversations. Let’s contribute to the wellbeing of others’ mental state and improve ours at the same time. Let’s make a difference this year! Submitted by Valerie Fairchild, pastor of Spirit Song church in Vistancia 03/31/20

Having Your Will with IRAs & 401Ks

Wills and Trusts generally will not govern the distribution of your IRA’s or 401k’s. The designated beneficiary form directs who will get the benefits of a qualified retirement plan. If your “Estate” is listed as the designated beneficiary or if there is no designated beneficiary, probate will be needed and the IRA will have to be paid in a lump sum, not over time as an inherited IRA.

The benefits of a qualified retirement plan can be distributed through a revocable Trust, over time, as long as certain precautions are taken. First, the Trust must be listed as the beneficiary, the trust agreement. Then, the revocable Trust must be valid under state law, become irrevocable upon the death of the participant and the beneficiaries have to be identifiable from the trust agreement.

If you are married, then normally your spouse will be the initial beneficiary. In order for a child or a trust to be listed as the primary beneficiary, federal law requires spousal consent in regard to 401K or other ERISA qualified retirement accounts. Federal law does not require spousal consent for IRAs, but Arizona’s community property laws create a presumption that the spouse is entitled to one-half of the IRA. Thank You

The Community Angel Tree for The Phoenix Dream Center The Mom’s Club of Vistancia began working with the Phoenix Dream Center this year to bring a greater visibility and understanding to the world of human trafficking here in AZ. The Phoenix Dream Center provides housing and support to those affected by human trafficking and the Mom’s Club wanted to provide education and awareness to our community. We decided that hosting an “Angel Tree” was a great way for our community to provide gifts during the holiday season to those who may have never experienced receiving gifts of love. The “Angel Tree” was featured in the Mountain Vista Club office with 55 survivors including some of who have children listing the name and gift ideas. Our community responded in a big way! We not only had individual community members agree to take “Angels” but we even had local business jump in to show their support. Also, thank you to the Mom’s Club members that who helped coordinate and made this possible.

You all have made a huge impact to the lives of so many people who have felt ignored for so long and we all worked together to bring holiday love and cheer to those less fortunate. The Mom’s Club will have additional opportunities for our community to raise awareness about Human Trafficking and help survivors in the program with basic needs (undergarments, used shoes, sundresses, T-shirts and shorts as we approach summer). Thank you for the community supporting and attending the informational meeting last month about the Phoenix Dream Center, awareness, prevention, and listening to an amazing girl’s testimonial story. For more information about the Phoenix Dream Center and their important mission, please visit www.phxdreamcenter.org/. Peoria 411

Each year I find it amazing how fast the time flies and here we are kicking off another decade. As we enter 2019, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on highlights from this year, as well as look ahead to what’s in store for 2020. Reflecting on 2019 In 2019, I had the privilege to serve the community in various ways and witnessed firsthand the care and compassion that stretches across the city. In March, Mayor Carlat and myself participated in the Food 4 Kidz packing day, where Trilogy volunteers packed more than 150,000 meals for children in need. Then in April, I was invited to speak at Peoria Unified School District’s PLUS Days where student leadership shined. In May it was my pleasure to host a shred event at Copper Hills and partner with Alex’s Lemonade Stand foundation to raise money for childhood cancer research. 2019 provided the Mesquite District with some exciting milestones as well. January marks the one-year anniversary of the Blooming Spire light sculpture that illuminates the night. Speaking of

lighting up the night, Peoria hosted the first ever Peoria Country Music Festival at Lake Pleasant this year and what a great event it was. Thank you to all who joined me over the weekend, it was a lot of fun and I can’t wait for next year. Finally, with the help of the Peoria Pioneer Lions, two Friendship Benches were installed this fall at Westwing and Lake Pleasant Elementary. The message of kindness these benches represent help ensure that the care and compassion exemplified by the community today extends into the future. What’s in Store There will be many exciting additions to the community in 2020. One of the largest projects finishing this year is Paloma Community Park. With infrastructure in place and work continuing at a positive pace, the park is on-track to open in late summer/early fall of 2020. Additionally, improvements to Sonoran Mountain Ranch Park will begin within the next few months, following the collection of community input in 2019. With a focus on the playground, shade, turf improvements and more, this project will breathe new life into this park – which has been there since 2006! Finally, a project everyone will be happy to see come to a close is the Happy Valley Road widening. A new bridge over the Aqua Fria, a new traffic signal at 100th Lane and additional lanes will all contribute to a safer travel corridor for all. It is my goal to ensure everyone can stay engaged so we may collectively create the best future for Peoria. To stay connected, sign up at peoriaaz.gov/mesquite.

Why The Glass Matters Wine connoisseurs know something even more important than facts about vintages and varietals: It makes a big difference how your wine is served. From the correct temperature to the glass you drink from, how any wine is presented can change the entire experience. And it’s not just about aesthetics - although a beautiful glass may enhance your visual experience, the size and shape of a wine glass

can alter any wine’s aroma and taste, for better or worse. The size and shape of the glass affects not just how the wine responds to its environment (exposure to oxygen and temperature, for example), but how we drink it. The way you hold the glass, how you tilt your head (forward or back - consider a martini glass versus a wine glass), where your nose is centered as you sip and where on your tongue and palate the wine first hits can all impact your experience of the wine.

For this reason, it’s also best to fill each glass only about one third full when serving red wines, to encourage more aeration. White wines The ideal glass for most white wines will be U-shaped, with a smaller bowl than when serving red wines. One of the reasons is that it helps prevent the wine from warming up too quickly, as whites are best served somewhat chilled. The more upright shape of the glass also allows aromas to be released sufficiently - without losing any aroma - for these lighter wines. Sparkling wines When serving champagne, prosecco or other sparkling wines to your guests, flutes or a tulip shaped glass are recommended. These glass shapes allow the chilled wine to stay cooler longer. Whereas a wider glass would offer too much surface area, letting the delightful bubbles fizzle out more quickly. A narrower glass helps to preserve the carbonation of your sparkling wine longer.

What do you need to know so your guests will experience your wine at its very best? Here are some guidelines. Red wines In general, the best glasses to enhance the bigger and bolder flavors of most red wines should be taller and have a larger bowl than glasses meant for serving lighter or more delicate wines. Larger glasses allow a wine to breathe more and permit the wine’s flavors and aromas to develop more fully. 10 Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine

Home Oasis

Here are some healthy behaviors and design tips to help you bring nature’s sanctuary indoors. Fill your home with photos of nature Surrounding yourself with images of nature can have a positive effect on wellness. Try framing some photos of special memories in nature like a hike with your family, beach sunset or mountain view. Let in more fresh air and natural light Today’s homes are built tighter and more sealed, which means they trap toxins from daily living - such as cooking, cleaning, pets and more - inside. Adding skylights that can open is a simple home renovation project to improve fresh air flow, helping rid indoor air of pollutants. Additionally, studies show that exposure to natural light helps to sync your circadian rhythm, allowing for better

sleep at night. Fill your home with natural scents Up your chef game by using fresh herbs in your cooking that will fill your kitchen with natural fragrance. Making an indoor herb garden ensures you’ll always have some on hand. You can also incorporate fresh herbs into bouquets or wreaths. Meditate or do yoga in the morning Waking up with stretching or meditating is a great way to prepare yourself for a successful day. Open the blinds or curtains on your windows and skylights to let in early morning light and help you feel invigorated and refreshed. Go green with your decor Reap the benefits of nature by bringing it inside, adding greenery or even fruit into your decor. The possibilities are endless - use a bowl of fresh fruit as a centerpiece or mix different sizes of pots to create a succulent gallery. Little touches of green in each room will go a long way. Use natural cleaning products Many common cleaning products have harsh chemicals that can be inhaled or absorbed into your skin. Combat the dangers of these toxins by switching to natural cleaning products. You’ll feel safer and more relaxed when your home is chemical-free. From boosting your home’s natural light to going green and adding plant life, it’s easy to turn your home into a natural oasis with these simple steps.
