From Me To You... “He’s making a list and checking it twice...”

‘Tis the season for lists. Lists of gifts to buy and dishes to make, lists of holiday cards to send out, lists upon lists upon lists. Usually lists are helpful for me. They allow my mind to concentrate on whatever task is at hand without worrying about remembering the next task. In my work I make tons of lists! I have lists of ads to update, articles to write or proof, people to email, and then there is the Master List. I have a giant white board behind me in my office to keep me on track each month. It is mostly there as a checklist to make sure nothing gets missed in one of the magazines. But without that master list there would be things missing from one or more magazine that should have been there. Then there are my mental lists of things I would like to do, things like movies I want to watch and books I want to read. I started to buy books theorizing that if I had them in front of me I would remember to read them. What actually happened is that I have a stack of books by my bed waiting to be read. The guilt is enormous. The movie list is just a mental checklist. I see a

preview and think, “Oh I would like to watch that when it comes out!” Of course by the time the movie is available I have completely forgotten about it.

I was scrolling through Netflix or Hulu, or one of the other online streaming services a couple of days ago and I came upon the movie The Meg. This movie is an update of the Jaws movies with a giant shark that terrorizes the locals. There is the ubiquitous beach full of tourists to churn through and the boat with well intentioned researchers to upend and eat. My favorite part was when they had finally caught and killed the monster after a terrifying chase scene. They were basking in that post victory glow and one of the scientists noticed that the bite of this shark did not seem to be big enough for the prints it had left on their underwater research facility. Dum dum duuuum!!!! A new and even bigger shark leapt over their boat, eating several people and a chunk of the dead shark. Classic. As much as I enjoyed the movie I have to admit it was truly terrible. Just awful. From the acting, to the plot, to the enhanced computer graphics. Nothing was ever going to be award winning. And yet I enjoyed the heck out of it. Partly because I love kitschy movies like that but mostly because it meant I could check it off my movie list. Finally I can get to the next thing on my list. What is that you ask? Well I am going to pop some popcorn and cozy up with another wild ride, The Crown. Sure it may not have as much blood but it is just as vicious in its own way.

Spiritual Thoughts Hello Vistancia!

Have you started watching Christmas movies yet? One of my favorites is the 2018 Grinch Who Stole Christmas. The whole town of Whoville gets in on the Christmas spirit. There are decorations, and parties and music that show how people are celebrating the season. There is a scene where the townspeople are caroling as the Grinch and his dog Max are walking by. They sing the familiar carol, “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.” The choreography and choral arrangement of these animated townspeople make me get goosebumps. The lyrics, “Tidings of comfort and joy” end every verse. While I get a sense of “comfort and joy” watching it, to the Grinch, the townspeople are pushy and intimidating. Too often, we assume what makes us joy-filled, or comfortable has the same effect on others. Perhaps it does not. While we will all seek ways to celebrate our holidays this season, keep an open mind that the way you celebrate, is not

51 Years

necessarily the way others celebrate.

In fact, even though my family and I find great comfort in watching a Star Wars marathon or the National Lampoon’s Family Christmas movie during the holidays, we recognize you may not. You may get great joy from watching A Christmas Movie when it airs again this season, but know I will not be among those enjoying it! Not only do people celebrate the season differently, not all of us are going to celebrate the same ways we normally would. It will be a good year for all of us to take deep breaths, find the comfort and joy of the season around us and appreciate how others do the same. May your holidays be filled with “comfort and joy” through the celebration of Emmanuel, or seasonal music, movies, games or other traditions. Submitted by Misty Howick, Pastor of Spirit Song Church meeting in Vistancia, Facebook Live and Youtube.

Food For Kids 2020-21 Thank goodness we had our 2020 Pack Day on March 3rd before everything fell apart. The 2020 Pack day was our best in 15 years with over 150,000 meals packed.

We have been in touch with Food for Kidz International in Stewart, Minnesota and they currently do not have any events being held. They do have a community that is packing food for them, but events like ours are not being held. We have decided that with the current situation we will forego having our Pack Day in March 2021. We do not see an event of this magnitude being a possibility this year. We would still like to support FFK and our local Valley View Food Bank at this difficult time by sending a monetary donation in place of our packed food. FFK said the funds would be still be used to purchase the ingredients for packing and their community group would do the packing.

a 501(c)3 charity so donations are tax deductible. Deadline for donations is December 31, 2020. It is not as much fun as our dances or coin dump but the purpose of raising money to feed hungry children is still the same. We have also postponed our golf tournament because the Veterans Club tournament originally scheduled for March 2020 has now been rescheduled to February 2021. We had agreed with them to hold our tournaments in alternating years so we will move ours to March 2022. We hope that you will continue to support us and hope that we can again have Pack Day in 2022. Feel free to share this message with neighbors and friends who might not see MTL or Nextdoor. Thank you from the Co-chairs Bob & Jan Trella and Mike & Nan Ponting

Pet Of The Month

Hello there. My name is Harley. I am a purebred three year old male Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. “Cavys” as they call us are the biggest of the toy breeds. We typically range from 1318 pounds. Guess I must have come from where they grow ‘em big though because I weigh in at a lean, mean, well I’m not really mean, 22 pounds. Hey, I’m a big guy! We cavys come in four colors: black & tan, tri-color, Blenheim and ruby, which I am. Our hair gets very long, which means lots of brushing.

My human mom tells me I’m a sweetheart. I love to follow my humans here and there around the house. Sometimes I go to the dog park, where I have fun running and retrieving balls. My favorite pastime though is laying in my human mom or dad’s lap, relaxing together. As they say, it’s a dog’s life. Woof!

Gifts To Share It’s no secret this year’s holiday season is bound to be different. But what hasn’t changed is the search for unique gift ideas to share with the ones we love, whether we’re together or apart.

If you want to make an impression on your family and friends this year, it’s time to think outside the gift box. What can you do to make the holidays memorable for hard-to-shop-for relatives and friends? How can you find special new ways to connect with them, even from a distance? Here are a few ideas to get you started: 1. Create a unique story, photo album or scrapbook project Want to gift something truly special? Put together a photo album or make a scrapbook of shared memories you can send to someone as a memorable, one-of-a-kind keepsake. Collaborate with other friends or family members if you can - it will turn the project into a group experience you’ll all treasure. Use mail, email or hand delivery to pass items along so everyone in your group can contribute before the completed project is ready for the recipient to enjoy.

2. Share the gift of language Do you have an aunt who’s always wanted to learn Italian, or maybe your dad loves to tell stories of his long-ago trip to Japan? Now’s the time to provide them with the opportunity to explore - or refresh - their language skills with an immersive language app like Rosetta Stone. Even better, make it a family affair! Giving a language-learning app to several family members is a great way to explore your family’s cultural heritage. It might even be the first step in a future trip together. As part of your gift, schedule virtual events to “meet up” and practice your language skills as you learn together. 3. Explore the world of multi-player video games Even for people who think they don’t like video games, there’s a gaming experience out there for everyone. Plenty of family-friendly, multiplayer games can make for fun and memorable group activities for all ages. Try easy games involving scenarios that don’t require in-depth gaming knowledge or a long, complicated setup to get going. For example, games where you race alongside one another, manage a farm or build houses in a village full of talking animals have been popular in recent years. Games like these are low-stress ways to pass the time that can cross generations. And thanks to online features, many can easily be played together even if you’re far apart. 4. Stream movies together Thanks to today’s technology, there are many ways to view family favorites or holiday classics together, even when you’re not in the same room. Several movie streaming services and apps provide options for people to view the same content at the same time - some even allow you to see your viewing companion while you watch, just like you’re in the same room. The only tricky part will be getting everyone’s bag of popcorn to pop simultaneously. If your friend or relative can’t stream with you, gift them a subscription to the service or show them how to set it up alongside yours. Making it work so you can enjoy a movie together will be the perfect gift to share. December 2020

Non-Stress Estate Planning Estate planning does not need to be complex or confusing. You deserve to have your questions answered when they arise. Your documents should be helpful when you need it most. Online services and computer forms simply do not address the variety of issues that might arise as we do in our office.

The court process of probate can be avoided with a revocable trust for some, but others can utilize a beneficiary deed with more ease. Privacy laws can prevent you from being assisted by your spouse, trusted friend or family member. Powers of attorney give the right person the legal authority to help you. We make sure you have the correct power of attorney you need, including for finances, medical health care or mental health care. Inheritances for minors, whether children or grandchildren, can be bogged down by a court conservatorship when a trust is not used. A court conservatorship is more

costly and burdensome than a probate. The trusts we prepare address the needs of minors to avoid court conservatorship and if necessary provide incentives for education and employment. A good estate plan provides centralized management for your assets if you are incapacitated or upon your death. The holiday season is a good time to remember some important safety tips to make the holidays even more enjoyable. • Candles are fun to look at and smell great in your home. But, remember, candles are an open flame and can easily ignite anything close that is flammable. • Never leave a child alone in a room with a burning candle. • Blow out the candle when you leave the room. • Do not burn the candle all the way down to the bottom. • Never use a candle if oxygen, like a medical oxygen tank, is being used in the home. • If you have a fireplace, check and clean the chimney and fireplace area prior to using it this season. Use a screen on the fireplace at all times. Again, make sure no flammable material is ever near the fireplace. • Decorating for the holidays is one of the best ways to get into the holiday spirit. Keep in mind, emergency rooms become busier as decorations start. So, let’s decorate with safety in mind. • Avoid potential poisonous plants like mistletoe, holly berries, Jerusalem cherry and amaryllis. • Make sure artificial trees are marked “fire resistant.” • Remember to water fresh-cut trees. • Make sure there is a three-foot distance between your tree and any radiant heat or open flames.

When installing holiday lights be sure to remember the following: • Use indoor lights rated for indoor use. Use outside lights rated for outdoor use. • Replace lights if they are broken, have a cracked light socket, frayed or bare wires showing. • Follow the recommendation on the package or directions for the number of light sets that can be plugged into one outlet. Do not piggyback extension cords to connect light sets. • Never nail, tack, or stress wiring when hanging lights. Keep all plugs off the ground away from water. • Turn off all lights and decorations when you go to bed or leave your house. Although the holiday season may look and feel very different this year, it remains a perfect time to reflect upon the importance of the season. Now, more than ever, that reflection centers on the importance of community. For many families, including mine, the lines that once separated work life, school life and home life have been blurred. In our home, that has resulted in not just a greater appreciation of our own family, but also for the collection of families that define our community. We have all become, at the same time, more self-sufficient and more aware of others. When we keep an eye on our neighbors’ well-being, they pay it forward. It has never been more clear to me, how blessed we are to call Peoria our community. Wishing you and your family a joyous holiday season and best wishes for the New Year. When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.

There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.” There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown. • The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. • Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times. • Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, which can provide greater short-term sales

Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine

growth, increases during a recession. • When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current – and possibly future – sales. An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.” An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits. Another strategy used by marketers is changing the ad message and using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. Some advertisers will offer interest-free loans, coupons or special promotions to boost sales and market share. For some advertisers that don’t give cost incentives, they can change the ad message to being expensive but worth it. Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand provides. Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share. Perhaps the best quote about advertising in a recession came from Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. When asked, “What do you think about a recession?” he responded, “I thought about it and decided not to participate.” -----------------------------We at Estrella Publishing are open for business and here working overtime to support our clients with their marketing strategy.
