From Me To You... People have always known who I am. As the daughter of the local vicar (minister) I was never anonymous. There was not one period of my childhood that was not remarked over and scrutinized and that can be challenging.

At the age of 14 we were all allowed to decide if we wanted to attend church anymore. So of course we all quit on our birthdays. What teenager wouldn’t rather stay in bed on a Sunday morning than get up, get dressed and sit on an uncomfortable pew in a cold church for what seemed like hours? The horror of having to explain that to every single parishioner had us all scurrying back to services within a week. Our public personas were compounded and somewhat elaborated on because my father routinely made his sermons about us and the religious lessons the parish could learn from our blunders. There was the time when my boyfriend left the house by performing a wheelie on his motorbike, the time we destroyed a clock, the horror of my excruciating trip down an unvarnished wooden slide... I forget the lessons but remember the mortification of everyone

knowing my business. But it is all I have ever known.

Perhaps that is why I left home and travelled across continents and oceans at 18. Perhaps it was just the push I needed. Whatever the reason, after more than 20 years in the background, I find myself reluctantly back in the public eye as an adult. Notoriety is a strange thing. Being the publishers of our local magazines awards my husband and myself a small amount of notoriety. This means that trips to the supermarket can take over two hours, a quick stop at the gas station becomes a lengthy chat. It can be a problem, but not for the reasons you might think. There is a condition called Prosopagnosia or face blindness where you do not remember people’s faces. You can remember the person but have no idea who they are. I am not saying that I have this condition but I certainly have problems placing people. I have been in situations where I have known someone for many, many years, I can tell you where they grew up, their favorite dessert and how we met. But their name? Nope. Completely blank. Sometimes it helps if they are in the same place as last time. If I meet my child’s teacher at school I can usually get it right - but bump into them at the supermarket and I am at a loss. I have attended many a corporate holiday party where about 15 minutes into a conversation I remembered the person I was talking to and realized what an idiot I was making of myself. So if I meet you in the cereal aisle, or we attend an event together please don’t take it personally if I say something idiotic to you like, “It is so nice to meet you!” Even if we have been to book club together for the last 15 years...

On Our Cover Vistancia Business Networking Group Cover article for Dec 2019

Pictured on the cover are some of the positive thinking participants in the Vistancia Business Networking group. This group was launched in 2006 and was formed for the purpose of networking with other people building businesses as well as encouraging, educating, supporting, and referring one another. Over the years, the group has met at the Vistancia clubhouse, the Kiva club in Trilogy, Verde Grill, and V’s Taproom. We celebrate returning to the Vistancia Mountain Vista Clubhouse in January of 2018 where we are welcomed as a Vistancia club. This means we meet without charge and therefore we have no dues for participating in the Vistancia Business Networking group. There is plenty of business for all, so we do not restrict business participation to just one-of-akind. We also do not restrict geographically. If

a business covers this area, it is welcome along with Vistancia, Trilogy, and Blackstone residents whether small businesses or representatives of larger companies. We meet the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 8:00 a.m. at the Vistancia Mountain Vista Clubhouse, 29701 N Sunrise Point, Peoria, AZ 85383. Bring plenty of business cards and event flyers. We open with each participant sharing a brief introduction to his/her business. This is followed by a 15-minute business presentation given by one of the participants. Next, we share community news followed by kudos where we recognize positive encounters with one another’s business expertise, product, or helpfulness. We share business cards and learn about the different businesses so we can refer one another when we hear someone is looking for their service or product. Come check us out! Email us at vistanciabusinessgroup@gmail.com, and/or find us on Facebook at Facebook@facebook.com/ groups/VistanciaBizNetworking, or just drop by and join us on the second or fourth Tuesday at 8:00a.m. We’d love to have you!

Peace On Earth A Better Focus

Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27) Whether you celebrate Christmas or Hanukkah, many find this season becomes more about overspending, stress, and trying to fit too much into our busy lives. It becomes a time of trying to win hearts through gifts or making everything ‘perfect.’ Could it be different? It doesn’t take money to love. At least it shouldn’t if we are talking true love. So, if love is the driving force behind gift-giving, then let’s refuse to equate money with love. Watch children. They show love through pictures they’ve drawn, projects they’ve made, messy kisses with chocolate covered mouths, climbing into our laps to snuggle, taking our hand while we walk, and speaking the most amazing words, “I love you.” And we are deeply moved. Yet, they didn’t spend money.

and serve. He encouraged caring for others, doing for others, focusing on putting others first. He showed us the very character of God and God’s love. Imagine taking this hectic crazy season and turning it into something warm and loving and healing and a true celebration of God’s love for the world? What small changes could we each make to pull away from consumerism and stress and embrace a deeper way of loving? God came to earth as Jesus – talk about a relational gift! He’s called Immanuel meaning “God with us.” He brings God’s presence to us. This Savior born to us is a very personal gift. Could we gift like that? Let’s be with each other, face to face, or at least ‘face time’ together. And let’s take time to celebrate the One who gave us the gift of love, peace, and relationship in the first place. Celebrate with us at Spirit Song or a church near you. Submitted by Valerie Fairchild, pastor of Spirit Song meeting in Vistancia.

50 Years

Of Honest, Dependable Service. We stand behind our work.

What if we showed our love through giving our time, speaking (or writing) words of appreciation and thanks, snuggling, holding hands, or making something personal like a collection of memories and photos? Personally, I prefer dinner with family over a new piece of jewelry.

SERVICE IS OUR SALESMAN

I celebrate Christmas. For me it is about the amazing love of God who wants the world to be caring and peace filled, a place where people forgive one another, where conversations are grace filled and all know the gift of God’s love through Jesus. Jesus came to bring peace, not to cause more angst surrounding the celebration of his birth!

Avoiding Probate

With A Beneficiary Deed A Beneficiary Deed in essence is a “pay on death designation” for real property. It is very useful if you want to leave your house or other real estate to one or two persons upon our death. A Beneficiary Deed avoids probate without giving up any present ownership interest in the property like joint tenants with right of survivorship does. The Beneficiary Deed is fully revocable. Where there are co-owners, the surviving owner can revoke the Beneficiary Deed. The owner retains control. The owner does not need to consult the beneficiaries or be concerned about the beneficiaries’ creditors (unlike joint tenants).

The Beneficiary Deed is a great tool for people who have all other assets in accounts that have a “pay on death” designation of some type. The Beneficiary Deed is not a good tool if you want to leave your real property to more than two people, to minors or to adults with special needs receiving government assistance. In those instances, a trust should be used. Sharon Ravenscroft, Esq., The Cavanagh Law Firm, PA, Sun City and Phoenix offices, (623) 815-7451 or Sravenscroft@CavanaghLaw. com. Veterans In Need UP BY THEIR BOOTSTRAPS It’s a sad fact that many Veterans in our country are under resourced when they come home. The good news? Up BY THEIR BOOTSTRAPS is here to make life a little better for those who have sacrificed so much for our Country. Our Veterans have given some of the best years of their lives in order to protect us and to protect our freedoms. UP BY THEIR BOOTSTRAPS was founded by Jay and Frances Humphrey in 2013 to fulfill his lifelong dream of working with Veterans in need. “It’s our vision that by donating a car and other services to a Veteran in need, we can help them to live a more healthy and fulfilling life…A hand up and not a hand out by furnishing reliable transportation to members of the military, Veterans and their families.” Our goal is to donate at least 1 car every month. On average it costs $1,000 for each vehicle to be acquired, checked and repaired including things like tires and registration in order to make them “road ready”

To date we have donated 50 vehicles. We have several Veterans waiting for vehicles. We currently have 4 vehicles on hand but just need the funds to be able to make them ready and safe. It is our hope that as business members of our community as well as individuals see how our mission is helping our Veterans, you will offer to donate a car, financial support or maybe even volunteer as we work to get the word out that our Veterans need and deserve our help. We are 100% volunteer driven and every dollar donated goes to support our Veterans. Whether you donate monthly, occasionally or even one time….we appreciate your efforts to help our Veterans in need. If you are interested in helping, please visit our website….upbytheirbootstraps.org. Our Veterans and their families have sacrificed so much; let’s show them just how much we appreciate them.

Tis The Season

The holiday season is upon us once again and families across the country are getting in the spirit by stringing festive lights, wrapping presents and decorating their homes. While such holiday preparations may seem innocuous, they can provide opportunities for pests like spiders, ticks, ants and mice to be inadvertently brought indoors. One of the most common ways that pests are introduced into homes during the holidays is via Christmas trees, wreaths and firewood. Ants, spiders, ticks and other pests can hide deep in the branches of trees and in crevices of wood. In some cases, insects may even lay eggs in trees or garland. When brought indoors, the eggs will hatch creating a major pest infestation in the home. To prevent bringing pests into you home on live trees and other greenery, take a few minutes to carefully inspect such items before bringing indoors. Look for insects, nests or eggs, and shake off greenery outdoors to rouse any hidden tenants.

Another way that pests can access our homes this time of year is through boxes of decorations, which are often stored in basements, attics, garages and crawlspaces - all favorite hiding spots for pests. Mice and other pests find their way into the boxes of during the off-season. When homeowners unpack their decorations, they may find live or dead pests and droppings inside. Unfortunately, in some cases, they may also find that holiday decorations have been chewed or destroyed by pests. When it’s time to decorate, unpack holiday items outside and inspect all items carefully for signs of pests, droppings, gnaw marks or other damage before bringing them indoors. Pay special attention to strings of lights to ensure that wiring has not been frayed by pests. Perhaps the most important step you can take to prevent pests during the holidays comes at the end of each season, when it’s time to take down the tree and pack up the decorations. Store holiday décor in hard, plastic bins with tightly sealed lids instead of cardboard boxes or bags that can easily be chewed through. Do not pile discarded live trees or cut firewood near your home, as this can attract mice, termites and other pests. During this busy time of the year, it’s easy to overlook signs of pests in the rush to check another item off of the holiday “to-do” list, but by taking some simple steps you can greatly reduce your chances of battling pests in your home this season. Remember, if you see signs of pests or suspect an infestation this holiday season, contact a licensed pest professional to inspect your home and treat the problem promptly so that you can get back to enjoying the festivities in a pest-free home. Life As A Caregiver My last article ended with me deciding to find out what my APOE genetic make-up was. Those are the markers that will inform me of my risk and likeliness of getting Alzheimer’s disease. It was a big decision to make because once you learn what your risk percentage is, there is no turning back to ‘unlearn’ it. He explained to me that some people are devastated by the results while some are relieved (so they can be better prepared and make necessary plans). With all the information and research I have learned and studied throughout the last 10 years, I knew I would be ok with the results, either way. He asked me what I thought my results were…and I told him. I said that I was almost certain they were either the highest risk or the next highest due to my family history.

It turned out I was half right. They were the next highest…NOT the highest. And when I learned that even with them being the next highest and had a 25% higher risk than someone without my genetic make-up, it also meant I had a 75% chance of NOT getting it! AND….there are numerous cases of people with Alzheimer’s who don’t have a marker at all!! The experts just don’t know conclusively why some people get the disease and some do not. There are other factors that enter into the equation: lifestyle being a big one. People who smoke, are stressed-out, eat unhealthy, do not

exercise or move on a regular basis, and don’t use their brain have a higher risk, as well.

So now I know. I feel an enormous pressure has been lifted off my shoulders and the truly interesting reaction I had was that under no uncertain terms, my parents GAVE me my DNA and each one gave me an APOE gene. It made my connection to them feel incredibly strong. Since my gene match was what it was, I semiqualified for the clinical study being started on a potentially new drug that, if proven effective and safe, could be the answer to curing or preventing Alzheimer’s. I wanted to know more about it before I agreed to move forward. I would go through a three-month qualifying test protocol then, if those results were satisfactory, the actual clinical study would last five years - I had no idea it would be that long! And that’s when learning about the testing protocol started to get a bit squeamish for me: several injections into the lumbar to extract my fluid for testing, more memory and MRI tests, and the tracking of side effects from the drug to determine its safety. Remembering this is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, I won’t know if I’m one of the people even taking the drug! I thought long and hard about whether I wanted to do this. I just didn’t think I could endure that much mental attention focused on this study and still be monitoring my mother’s fading condition with the disease…along with upcoming full kneereplacement surgery and rehab for three more! In the end, I declined to participate. And I know it was the right decision for me! I still have a few reservations about not doing all that I can to help rid the world of this horrible disease. But in the long run, I know I have done more than most and feel good about it. And I need to take care of myself first! Submitted by Kathy Linton
