From Me To You...

At this time of year I find myself sorting through things, reorganizing, re-homing, generally tidying up. I think it is the autumn. The thought of cooler weather (finally) puts me in the frame of mind to get things done. I decided to tackle my closet and let me tell you, it has led me on a merry chase. I began by getting rid of things that don’t fit, are worn out or just no longer bring me joy. Do you see where I am going with this? I did it. I tried, pretty unsuccessfully, to ‘KonMarie™’ my clothes. For anyone who has been living under a rock, Marie Kondo stirred the souls of many people with the promise of a streamlined home, and by extension, a way to streamline the rest of your life if you so choose. I stink at it. I started out with the best intentions. Anything that doesnt fit - in the bag for donations. But what if I loose some weight? This was expensive. This has a sentimental attachment. This might fit one day.

After several false starts I managed to remove a couple of bags of clothes and was on to the fun part. Or so I thought. Folding! The recommended folding method reminds me of a laundromat in New York. Way back in time, before kids and a mortgage and other important

money drains, I used to send out my laundry to be washed and folded. In my defense we had no washer and the building’s laundry room was creepy, and I wanted to! The clothes came back in the most perfect, tiny squares. To this day I have no idea how they did it but it is reminiscent of the way Marie Kondo recommends you fold your clothes, before lovingly placing them in your closet.

So off I went on the folding adventure and after several false starts I had a beautiful, color co-ordinated (ahem, way to go the extra mile) drawer full of t-shirts. Then it hit me. I was going to have to do this FOREVER. I mean really, who has the time? My foray into a streamlined life was fun for a day or two, but who has the energy to maintain it?

Next year I think I will satisfy my autumn cravings with a pumpkin spice latte instead.

On Our Cover

That Was Then, This is Now

The Artisans League at Trilogy in Vistancia is in full swing. It helps fuel creativity, ignite new ideas and provide encouragement and inspiration to emerging and established artists, crafters and makers of things. With our first pandemic, group classes took a pause, but each of us continued to strive to master our Davids in our own ways and our own mediums.

One of the League’s biggest events open to the public has been sponsoring two art shows each year. They used to be in the Kiva Club. That was then. Covid changed all that.

And The Artisans League quickly adapted. It’s what we do. Art shows turned into Art Walks throughout the community and our artists, crafters and makers of things now show their work in their garages and courtyards. Frankly, it could not be better. We are not hidden in the hills we are right here on the streets of Trilogy. Look for our signs the weekend of the Art Walk.

Creators have plenty of room to display what and how they want. Attendees are

not crowded into a packed ballroom. You might even find a raffle or two. One of the best results of these changes is we have doubled in size. This upcoming Art Walk features 64 creators at about 45 houses and at Mita Club. There is an amazing variety of talent – all sorts of mediums.

The Artisans League website offers a wealth of information. Maps/directories will be available by November 1, 2022. Many artists will have samples of their work on the website, so you can take a peek. If you live in Trilogy and would like information on how to join the league, that’s there too. www.

TheArtisansLeague.com.

Maps/directories will also be available starting November 7, 2022 at the Mita and Kiva Club front desks. Be sure to pick yours up and plan your route. Oh, while we call it a Walk, perhaps a bike or car will come in handy. It’s a big, beautiful community and there is a lot to see.

It is a great way to spend the day in the west valley. The Artisans League invites you your family and friends to come for the art and perhaps stay and have lunch in one of the Clubhouses. Saturday November 12 and Sunday November 13, 2022, from 9-3. Hope to see you there.

Passion

Last month we introduced the 1st Key of Success – where we discussed the importance of winning the inner game. Our inner game allows us to talk ourselves into or out of opportunities daily. These Thought Habits also impact whether our thinking is positive or negative. The 1st Key is also where our imagination, hopes, and dreams reside. There is a dreamer in each of us: who we desire to become, what we want life to be like, what we want to achieve, places we would like to visit, and more. Yet many let their dreams die unlived. Many let the circumstances in life dictate their lifelong journey and end up as a victim of circumstance, never finding the 1st Key of Success – Thinking.

Realizing you are different, you focus daily on winning the inner game by developing Thought Habits that assist you in becoming your best. You decide you want to make your life more than a

dream. You want to make it your reality. But most importantly, you are becoming passionate about it. At this moment, you will discover the 2nd Key of Success, the Key of Passion. The moment when the knowledge of the mind (thinking) becomes knowledge of the heart (passion). It becomes an inner knowing, an inner belief, a driving force. While the first key deals with dreams, the second key is about turning those dreams into reality. Using the IT Formula is how to make the magic happens! (Look for the IT Formula in our January issue.) And remember, if you ever lose your passion, go back to the 1st Key of Success – Thinking. You will find something has changed in your thinking.

We will discover the 3rd Key of Success in December. Until then, write a list of your passions. What are you passionate about? What do you want your life to look like?

Hot Cheesy Shrimp Dip for the Holidays

Thanksgiving is a time for relaxing with family & friends around the table ~ and indulging in a feast that spans the afternoon into evening! While every family has their traditions, I always include a seafood appetizer or chowder since most of my life was spent by the water.

When I lived on Cape Cod, I used lobster in this recipe since it was readily available ~ but shrimp is far easier to find in the desert in the frozen food section!! I always start with raw shrimp so I can cook it for 3 minutes in a pot of boiling water with 3 T Old Bay Seasoning for added flavor ~ but you an also use fully-cooked shrimp.

Serve this with pita chips or baguette slices. This recipe is a great “What Can I Bring” solution ~ but don’t plan on having any leftovers to bring home!

Ingredients:

4 T unsalted butter

1 C tri-color peppers (red/yellow/orange), finely chopped

1 C shallots, finely chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced

4 T flour

1 C heavy cream

¾ C whole milk

1 tsp Old Bay Seasoning

1 tsp paprika

½ tsp dry mustard

½ tsp kosher salt

½ tsp freshly ground black pepper

¼ tsp cayenne pepper

2 T sherry wine

1 C Gruyere cheese, shredded (or Swiss)

2 lbs cooked shrimp (I use 31-40 count, prepared as noted above)

1 T fresh parsley, chopped

1/3 C kettle cooked potato chips, crumbled

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray medium size casserole dish with nonstick spray ~ set aside.

In a large pan over medium heat, melt butter and saute peppers and shallots about 3-5 minutes. Add garlic and stir for 1 minute; then add flour and cook 2 minutes more. Whisk in heavy cream and milk until smooth.

Add Old Bay, paprika, mustard, salt, pepper, cayenne, and sherry. Reduce heat and simmer until mixture thickens. Add cheese, shrimp & parsley and pour into prepared dish.

Sprinkle top with potato chips and bake for 20 minutes until bubbly and lightly browned on top. Let rest 5 minutes before serving.

Legal

NON-STRESS PROBATE WITH A WILL

The Last Will and Testament is the document that allows courts to re-title accounts and assets which are in your name (not a trust) and which do not have a beneficiary designation.

If you are leaving assets to adults (not minors), then you can use beneficiary designations and avoid probate. A Will is still a good idea to have as a backup for any account without a beneficiary; either because a beneficiary was not listed or a financial company lost the beneficiary designation. If your spouse has children which are not also your children, the Will also can assure that your spouse’s half of the community property goes to you. Otherwise, intestate laws

apply and your spouse’s children will be entitled to one-half of the community property and onehalf of your spouse’s sole and separate property.

Be sure to keep your Original Will, because using a copy requires a formal court probate hearing. Evidence proving the Will was not revoked is needed when the original cannot be located. Wills need two witnesses and a specially worded affidavit so the Will can be probated without a hearing. A handwritten Will does not need witnesses or a notary if all of the dispositive provisions are in your handwriting and all pages are originals.

Spiritual Thoughts

I love the way autumn makes me feel. I want to cozy up in the most comfy places and have down time with blankets and warm drinks. Honestly, one of the most comfortable places in my house is in the bed with the memory foam mattress. When I lay down it feels like I might just be absorbed into the bed. Memory foam is aptly named. It “remembers” the weight of the object that rested on it. Our impression remains for several moments on the foam after we get up.

Winter holidays make impressions on us. The pumpkin pie spices that flavor everything from coffee to spam to tamales to pine cones (yes, I have seen all of these) remind us that this is a special season. It is filled with crisp leaves (a little farther north,) chilly nights (especially if you blast your air conditioner) and fun, heart warming movies and shows. People tend to come together for the holidays. Families reunite. Friends catch-up. New friends are made through social events. Thanksgiving brings special memories so do the winter holidays.

“Blessed be the … the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4. Phew, four times in one sentence, “comfort” or “consolation” must be pretty important to remember. There can be a special purpose to our comfort… to comfort others.

I feel autumn and winter are a time to share what we have, to bring joy to those who are lonely, to bring comfort to those in need. It is time to help others make special memories. There are people all over the Phoenix Valley who could use help making this time of year special. I invite you to get involved with the many organizations that participate in the Family Housing Hub. It is how anyone experiencing homelessness, or financial instability can seek help in the Phoenix Metro area. Check out fhhub.org and share some cozy holiday memories.

Peroria 411

Veterans Day is observed on November 11 of each year in honor of the men and women who served in the United States Armed Forces.

If you have not already visited the Senator John McCain Vietnam Memorial Plaza at Rio Vista Park (8866 W. Thunderbird Road), I encourage you visit. It was built to show our respect and appreciation for those who fought, and those who died, in Vietnam. The centerpiece of the plaza is a 1967 Bell UH-1H “Huey” helicopter that served 3,060 combat hours in Vietnam between 1968-1971. The tail marking of 58318 signifies the number of names on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. as of May 2017.

The plaza also includes an “Honor Wall” that identifies Veterans. If you have a special veteran that you would like to honor on this wall you can contact the City of Peoria’s Parks and Recreation Department at 623-773-7317, or visit www. peoriaaz.gov/veterans to submit an application.

Many non-profit organizations serve our veterans and allow our veterans to continue serving

their community. In the Mesquite District, we are fortunate to have the Trilogy at Vistancia Veterans Club.. The club, founded in 2014, has a membership of 256 members, canvassing all branches of service. To become a member of the club, the military veteran must have honorably served and reside in Trilogy at Vistancia. The club is well known within the valley and supports a myriad of veterans-related projects or as the club calls them, “missions.” They support MANA House, Veterans First Limited, U.S.Vets of Phoenix, St. Mary’s Food Bank, Packages from Home, Honor Flight Arizona, Toys for Tots, and National Military Veterans Wheelchair Games. The Trilogy at Vistancia Veterans Club was recently presented with the Peoria Neighborhood and Human Services Department’s External Partnership Award for their outstanding community service.

I would like to thank our active service members, Veterans and their families for their service. As a Veteran of the U.S. Air Force, who was stationed for a while at Luke Air Force Base, I understand and respect the level of dedication and sacrifice demonstrated by members of the military and their families.
