From Me To You... Not everyone is born a hero. For Peter Parker it was a radioactive spider bite, Captain America was injected with Super Soldier Serum, and the Hulk absorbed too many Gamma rays. However it starts, we all love an origin story. It can inspire us, or make us long for a bump of our own, something to push us into the next thing - a better version of ourselves perhaps.

mass of companies that seemed to want foreign labor over your own. The economy was folding in on itself, getting smaller and smaller every day. But in the middle of that despair we began to see new growth. People began to create their own jobs, their own companies, their own security. Estrella Publishing began in that time. An idea, the combination of existing talents, a desire to help these small businesses popping up all over the West Valley, and a history in the printing world that goes back a few generations.

Sometimes the origin story is a search for a better way to do things, or a solution that no-one else has come up with for a problem you want solved. Facebook started as a way to connect with others on the internet - that one exploded in a big way. Ferrucio Lamborghini was originally a farmer who made tractors. I guess he just really needed some speed in his life.

“Let’s start thinking about it. I mumbled, terrified to even try.

Other origin stories are more personal, we all love to tell of the day we met our spouse, how we fell in love, or the birth of our children.

We find ourselves in uncertain times, yet again. I encourage you to create your own origin story. You could have the idea for the next Facebook, Lamborghini, or if you are really lucky, Estrella Publishing.

I guess origin stories are really the tales of rebirth, re-invention. A new beginning. Let me tell you a tale of a new beginning that happened 10 years ago... It was the middle of the recession and noone was doing well. If you had a job you were terrified it was going to get swallowed up in the

Al went out that day and sold 3 pages of ads to local businesses and we began to get to work! Since then we have grown exponentially and provided low cost advertising to thousands of local small businesses.

Spiritual Thoughts Hello Vistancia!

I went for a morning walk recently. I had a lot on my mind and I was trying to gain clarity and focus. I walked all around the neighborhood watching families prepare for school and work. The garbage trucks came with their loud noises. I had a feeling of normalcy. I am grateful for that feeling, even if really, things will not be the same as they once were. Life is always changing and this year… there has been a lot of change for many of us. Yet I am grateful. I am grateful for those who have recovered from illness. I am grateful that this year my family has been cold/flu and covid free. I am thankful for those who care for the sick, the injured, the dying. I am grateful that we have found ways to support one another through this pandemic, which brought illness, grief, job loss, isolation and loneliness. There are good people out there helping and I am thankful for them.

51 Years

I am aware through my thankfulness that we each have a responsibility in helping those around us. I am aware of the passage in Romans 12, Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. We are blessed by blessing others. Our gratefulness comes from recognizing what is good in our own lives and sharing that with others. I would like to invite you to join Spirit Song in helping our neighbors by bringing your nonperishable food items to support St. Mary’s Food Bank on November 21st to Sunset park anytime between 1:00 and 4:00pm. Stop by or bring a chair and hang out. We would ask that you wear a face mask and be mindful of keeping physical distance between one another.

Online Grocery Shopping Online grocery shopping is on the rise, and the options are plentiful - from having a shopper deliver goods at your door to curbside pickup and more. But even the most experienced grocery shoppers may find they need to learn some new tricks to achieve online grocery shopping success.

Tip #1: Find the delivery method that best suits your needs Need lots of fresh produce delivered right away? Look for a service that gives your list to a personal shopper to take through a local store and deliver at your doorstep. If you’re looking to stock up on pantry staples, a service that ships from a warehouse is a great way to get what you need without having to step foot inside a store. Many stores are also offering curbside pickup, where you pick out your items online, check out and drive to the store to have your order placed directly into your trunk. Tip #2: Be an eco-friendly online shopper There are plenty of opportunities to keep sustainability in mind while online grocery shopping. Packages that weigh less will translate to reduced carbon emissions during shipping. For example, carton packages are about 60% lighter than cans, and they are made mainly from renewable materials. Even pet food can be found in cartons. Tip #3: Plan ahead Take advantage of the ability to assemble your grocery cart at home by assessing any long-term needs for staple items, like pasta, broths and beans. If you’re short on food storage space, look for foods packaged in square shapes. Stackable, shelf-stable cartons help make the 8 Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine

most of every inch. Many canned goods now come in carton packages too. Tip #4: Give specific instructions to your shopper It’s sad but true: Sometimes your favorite items will be out of stock. If you’re using a personal shopping service, make sure to include notes for preferred replacement items, especially if there’s another brand or flavor you’d like if your first choice is unavailable. You can even note how green you’d like your bananas or how ripe your ideal avocado may be. Online grocery shopping might require you to approach shopping a bit differently, but with a little bit of planning and practice you can have the food and other supplies you and your family need delivered directly to your doorstep.

Laundry During Covid

Good laundry practices in the home are more important than ever. Recommendations from the North American Cleaning and Sanitization Expert Panel offer guidelines to help reduce the spread of infections and illness when it comes to laundry practices in your home. These methods can give you better peace of mind, knowing that you’re doing all you can to help reduce the spread of viruses that cause COVID-19, the flu and colds. Here are some easy-to-follow do’s and don’ts for laundry best practices in your home: DO use a deeper-cleaning, high-quality laundry detergent that removes deeply embedded soils and germs. DO always wash or sanitize hands after handling soiled laundry and transferring wet laundry from washer to dryer, even in healthy households.

DO use special precautions if COVID-19 is suspected or confirmed. Wear disposable gloves if possible when handling dirty laundry from a person who is sick. Dirty laundry from a person who is sick can be washed with other people’s items. Do not shake dirty laundry. Clean and disinfect clothes hampers, appliance and other surfaces that contact soiled laundry. Remove gloves, and wash or sanitize hands right away. DO frequently wash clothing and other items such as bath towels, hand towels and kitchen towels. Bedsheets and especially pillowcases also require frequent laundering. DO use the highest temperature clothes washer setting you can safely use, according to the care instructions for the items being laundered if a respiratory illness such as COVID-19, the flu or a cold is suspected or confirmed. DON’T wait to wash soiled clothes or bedding of an ill family member - wash those items as soon as possible to avoid spreading infection in your household. DON’T wash bedding or clothes from a family member who is ill with laundry from other members of the household. Keeping that laundry separate can help prevent viruses or bacteria from spreading to others. Wash in hot water, using a deeper-cleaning laundry detergent plus a registered sanitizer and/or sanitizing cycle on the washing machine. Dry in a dryer on high heat. Wearing disposable gloves when handling soiled laundry from an ill household member can provide an extra layer of protection. Following these laundry practices can help ensure your family will be less likely to spread bacteria or viruses, helping to reduce the risk of illness for everyone in your home.

Virtual Celebrations For most people, 2020 is a year of change. Remote work, social distancing and more have challenged people to find new ways to connect with each other. Fortunately, humans are resilient and their spirit for finding innovative ways to connect is alive and well. Even as the country reopens, many are still finding the ease of virtual connections to be appealing. In fact, there are many unique ways to connect with friends and family virtually. Here are some simple ways people are elevating every day and prioritizing relationships even from afar:

1) Recognize simple moments and celebrate little things Shift your mindset to focus on the little things that brighten the day. You can elevate every day by taking time to recognize the simple moments and special events that make life so wonderful. There’s no need to wait for a big occasion to celebrate! Send your friend a text with your favorite memory of you two together. Write ecards to family just because. Decorate the house with streamers to celebrate TGIF and then send digital pictures to friends to inspire them to do the same. Be creative and find ways to make yourself and others smile. 2) Think outside the box with video gatherings Your bond with friends and family can grow even stronger when you set up video meetings to celebrate and connect. Fortunately, there are many high-quality video apps to choose from. Maybe you want to set up a Skype date to play a board game together even in different locations? Propose a movie night and set up a Zoom meeting to watch the same movie at the same time. Many people use WhatsApp for international connection, so you can set up a family conference call from different sides of the world. Take the first step and research the plethora of free video chat options.

Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine

3) Host a virtual wine tasting party Cheers to any occasion or just everyday delights with a virtual wine tasting party with friends. This is a fun way to sample different varieties and connect in a meaningful way. For a tasting party, select a variety of options, such as a fresh, crisp Sauvignon Blanc and tropical Chardonnay for whites. For reds, consider a rich Red Blend, and a Cabernet Sauvignon satisfies the craving for a full-bodied wine. Don’t forget a ripe RosÊ, a perfect wine for fall pairings. 4) Explore different video backgrounds Get creative with your setting for virtual gatherings. Yes, there are times when your living room or deck will do, but other times you may want to jazz things up a bit. For example, set up tropical decorations and pretend you are taking a trip to the islands, or explore digital backgrounds that can be added to the technology of your choice. For example, visit https://www.pinterest.com/flattopwines/flat-tophills-virtual-zoom-backgrounds/ to download a virtual Zoom background that features the stunning setting of vineyards in California. 5) Utilize social media platforms Social media has been a way to connect with friends and family for years now, but recently with quarantines and social distancing, even more people are using it to connect to others. Share images and captions of whatever is meaningful to you and tag with related hashtags. Some popular options are #love, #family and #friends. November 2020

Yum Yum

What turns a recipe into a weeknight favorite? How about something easy and packed with flavor that can be made partly in advance? Add excitement by exploring cuisines like those of North Africa, with flavor contrasts of spicy, sweet and tart. Harissa-spiced Steak with Grapes and Preserved Lemon delivers big flavor in an easy and quick way. Two North African ingredients, spicy harissa paste, a staple in Moroccan cuisine, and preserved lemon, a flavorful condiment with a mildly tart, but intensely lemony flavor, offer a zesty contrast to the refreshing and lightly dressed grape salad. Harissa-spiced Steak with Grape and Preserved Lemon Salad - Yield: Makes 4 servings Ingredients 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided 2 garlic cloves, grated or minced 2 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon honey, divided

1 tablespoon harissa paste 1 1/2 pounds top sirloin, cut 1 1/2-2 inches thick 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 tablespoon minced preserved lemon 1 tablespoon chopped thyme 1/8 teaspoon coarse salt and 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 cups halved green or red California grapes Directions • Combine 1 tablespoon oil, garlic, soy, 1 tablespoon of honey, and harissa in a glass pie plate. Add the meat and toss to cover. Marinate 30 minutes at room temperature or cover and refrigerate, then marinate 2 hours to overnight. • Heat grill to high. Pat steak dry and grill 7 to 9 minutes on each side for medium rare. Transfer to cutting board and let stand while making the salad. • Combine the remaining olive oil and honey with lemon juice, preserved lemon, thyme, salt, pepper and grapes. Slice steak into 1/2-inch pieces and divide between serving plates. Top with the grape salad and serve.

Non-Stress Powers Of Attorney Powers of attorney are helpful to avoid the stress that can arise if you need assistance due to illness. Dealing with financial institutions or hospitals can be difficult even when there are no issues about capacity. Powers of attorney are needed to authorize your agent to act without you having to be declared incapacitated. When a doctor provides a letter that a person is incapacitated, then the person loses the legal ability to handle finances or even healthcare decisions.

The durable financial power of attorney identifies the person who can legally assist you with paying bills and accessing your accounts for funds you need. Even a spouse cannot withdraw funds from an IRA for you unless you have a durable financial power of attorney. The medical healthcare power of attorney identifies an agent, such as a trusted family member or friend, who can give consent to medical treatment if you cannot. Arizona law also allows for the mental healthcare power of attorney which helps avoid costly court intervention when there is mental illness, brain injury, dementia or Alzheimer’s.

Without powers of attorney, the court must get involved. Two lawyers need to be hired; one for the patient and a one for agent or petitioner. After a court investigation, a hearing is held in open court—which is set commonly 45 days after a petition is filed. Time, money and privacy is saved by appointing an agent through powers of attorney. Estate planning does not need to be complex or confusing. You deserve to have your questions answered when they arise. Our documents are drafted to provide the benefit of avoiding obstacles and disputes, whether you have multiple beneficiaries or one special heir. Happy Valley Road Bridge Public Art Project The 303/Happy Valley Road bridge project is a perfect example of how every road project is looked at by the Engineering and Development Team as an opportunity for function and beauty. The Arts Team was part of this project right from the beginning to ensure that this bridge would not only serve traffic and pedestrians, but also be a point of pride for Peoria citizens and visitors, while leaving a lasting legacy for the student artists involved. Art enhances the quality of life every day in Peoria, and adds to the sense of place and community. Four PUSD elementary schools in the area of the bridge expansion project were selected to be part of the art inspiration and creation for the bridge pillar mosaics. The four schools are

Zuni Hills, Sunset Heights, Lake Pleasant, and Vistancia. Local artist Kristine Kollasch was chosen for the project for her expertise in working with mosaics and her experience in teaching students. Kristine led workshops at each of the schools for the students to create drawings that represented the area. Twelve of those drawings were selected to be represented through the creation of the mosaic art panels. The artist worked with the students to create the individual ceramic tiles that are woven into the intricate designs of the final mosaic panels. The panels measure 36” wide by 80” tall. Four of the art panels will be viewed from the traffic side of the bridge, and eight of the art panels will be viewed from the pedestrian side. Submitted by Councilmember Bridget Binsbacher

When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.

There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.” There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown. • The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. • Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times. • Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, which can provide greater short-term sales

Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine

growth, increases during a recession. • When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current – and possibly future – sales. An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.” An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits. Another strategy used by marketers is changing the ad message and using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. Some advertisers will offer interest-free loans, coupons or special promotions to boost sales and market share. For some advertisers that don’t give cost incentives, they can change the ad message to being expensive but worth it. Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand provides. Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share. Perhaps the best quote about advertising in a recession came from Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. When asked, “What do you think about a recession?” he responded, “I thought about it and decided not to participate.” -----------------------------We at Estrella Publishing are open for business and here working overtime to support our clients with their marketing strategy.
