From Me To You... The world is full of distractions. As I sit down to write this column, for example, I am listening to music (brain building Grieg but admittedly it is a distraction), looking out the window at my neighbors washing their vehicle, smelling my breakfast cooling on the counter, and a myriad of other small things. One distraction that I love is television. In particular cooking shows. There is nothing more enjoyable to me than watching other people cook and thinking that if I had the time or the patience I too could make a perfect Mille Feuille or Beef Wellington. I am also realistic enough to know that I probably shouldn’t try them if I want to keep the waistline I have worked so hard for. I know some people who cook for others and do not eat anything themselves. Not me. I am the ‘taste a little as you cook then dig in when it is ready’ kind of person. One cooking show that I delight in is The Great British Baking Show. Not only is there a cornucopia of delightful food, but the contestants are a joy to watch. They all get their
All Relief, No THC
instructions and off they go. Then something wonderful happens. They start to help each other. Even the hosts get in on the act. “What can I do to help dear?” They often ask, grabbing a large bowl or sifting an ingredient. And when the time draws to a close all the contestants jump into action. “I’m done, love, what can I do?” Or “Let me put those on your plate for you!” One time a contestant noticed an oven that had not been turned on and she helpfully told her fellow baker as she turned it up to the correct temperature. I love it! It is their competitive camaraderie that makes me smile. My husband doesn’t understand it at all, shaking his head in bemusement. “Don’t they realize this is a competition?” he mumbles under his breath as he walks away. After watching Bread Week I decided it was high time to get back into the kitchen and whip up a country loaf. In my youth I baked all the time. I joke about Mille Feuille but I can actually make it, rough puff pastry and all. Now this baking occurred at a different altitude and hemisphere so the ingredients are not at all the same. Did you know that flour contains different amounts of gluten depending on where you are in the world?? Something to be aware of if you are making bread. Needless to say, my recipes no longer work, so I scoured the internet and set to baking. The first day (I had forgotten how long it takes to make bread) yielded one sprained wrist (kneading accident), flour in my eyes and a slightly dense loaf. Not to be defeated I ate it with as much butter as I could slap on it and the next day I adjusted my kneading, proving and baking times and I managed to bake a pretty decent loaf of bread. I think I may try to make Beef Wellington after all. Someday...

Elevate Your Evening Whether you’re hosting a sit-down dinner, a family-style meal or a cocktail party, offer unique food and drink choices to suit the season. A charcuterie board is a great start - all you need to add are some stand-out drinks to make an impression.
1. Create a charcuterie board. Charcuterie boards can be appetizers or the main attraction at a cocktail party. Select cured meats like salami, smoked sausage and prosciutto along with with spreadable choices like pate, plus an array of cheeses. Choose softer, mild cheeses and harder, sharp cheeses to appeal to every palate. Add sliced French bread and/or crackers, with accompaniments like olives or fruit. Round out the board with little dishes of mustard, honey or quince paste. Get creative as you arrange everything on a board or platter. The idea is to provide guests with a variety of seasonal flavors they can mix and match in fun ways. 2. Punch up your party. Instead of adding bartender to your multitude of host duties, make a delicious Rum Punch ahead of time:
Rum Punch 3 ounces Angostura 5 Year Rum 1.5 ounces lime juice 3 teaspoons brown cane sugar 1 dash Angostura orange bitters 4 dashes Angostura aromatic bitters Garnish: lime wedge, grated nutmeg, maraschino cherry Shake all ingredients and strain into ice-filled glass. Garnish with lime, cherry and nutmeg. 3. Sugar and spice and all things nice. For an easy dessert you can make well in advance, offer guests a platter of chocolate truffles or freshbaked cookies. Another fun option: Cut squares of ready-made puff pastry, add your favorite jam, fresh fruit, chocolate or nut spread, then fold the dough, seal with wet fingers and bake on parchment paper at 400 degrees for about 10 minutes. There’s no reason fall entertaining can’t have the same fun and flair as summer soirees. With great food and drink choices, the possibilities are endless.

5 Reasons To Have A Trust A Revocable Living Trust creates the legal framework for your assets to be handled if you become sick or incapacitated or upon your death. Here are 5 of the top reasons to have a trust: • Your assets can be distributed without giving information to all heirs. Probates require notice to all heirs—including omitted children or siblings. • Assets located in multiple states can be managed without court involvement in any state. • A trust allows controlled distribution to minor children or grandchildren. Without a trust,
a court conservatorship will be required for distributions to minor which have a value over $10,000. Conservatorships involve annual expenses for court approved accountings, use of the funds is limited and all funds are dispersed at 18. • A trust can include incentives for children or grandchildren to go to college, stay away from drugs and become gainfully employed. • When you have multiple beneficiaries, including charities, there is centralized management of assets by the Successor Trustee of your choice. Home Decor
Do you have a bathroom that’s starting to look a little dated and drab, but perhaps doesn’t need a complete remodel? If you’re craving a change, you can update the space’s style with a few strategic steps. Not only will you elevate the appearance of your bathroom, but you’ll be boosting your home’s value as well. Here are ideas for updating your bathroom space with fashion and function in mind: Flooring replacement The floor in your bathroom gets used and abused, with frequent foot traffic as well as moisture from baths and showers. Replacing the flooring gives the space a noticeable face-lift. Add a heated floor element to give the space upscale appeal. Not into tile? An alternative is luxury vinyl flooring that gives the illusion of wood but with better durability.
Vanity upgrades One way to update a vanity is to replace the top portion with granite, quartz, marble or concrete. This can change the entire look of the vanity and update it with modern style. Consider updating the hardware as well. Mirror and lighting One of the hottest trends in bathroom design right now is lighted mirrors, adding both elegance and function to a bathroom. Shower style Replacing the shower is a massive project, but if you want to update the style with less effort, replace the shower curtain or door. If you have a shower door, it can be difficult to keep the glass clean. A new crystal-clear door from your local home improvement store will add a clean, updated look to the space. If you have a curtain, swap out old material for one in a fresh hue that evokes just the right feel for the space. Linens and rugs Last but not least, to update the style of your bathroom space, don’t forget about fresh linens. New hand towels, bath towels, rugs will update the visual appearance of the room in an instant. Simply swap out new for old and you’ll not only love the look, but there’s something luxurious about wrapping yourself up in a fresh plush towel after a long bath or shower.

Scorpions!!
Scorpions are a common nuisance pest in the Southwest Valley that are closely related to spiders, ticks, and mites. Although these pests are portrayed in Hollywood movies as being aggressive towards humans, scorpions try to avoid human contact and their well-known “stings” tend to be accidental. Most scorpion stings are like that of a bee sting, while others can be deadly and cause severe reactions. With 1,200 species of scorpions across the world, it is important to know what species might be lurking in your backyard and how you can avoid a run-in with them. Arizona Bark Scorpion The Arizona Bark Scorpion is the most wellknown species of scorpion living in North America. These scorpions can deliver a deadly sting and are one of a few species of scorpions that has a high level of neural venom that causes general illness for up to three days. As their name suggests, Arizona Bark Scorpions are native to Arizona but also inhabit Utah, New Mexico, and Nevada. These scorpions are yellow with horizontal lines, making it easier for them to blend in with their desert habitats.
Arizona Hairy Scorpion This scorpion is the largest species living in the U.S., growing to sizes of up to 5.5 inches. Arizona hairy scorpions can be found in California, Nevada, and Utah and can capture small lizards living in the deserts due to its larger size. These scorpions have yellow legs and a brown body. Striped Tail Scorpion These southwestern U.S. scorpions are native to the Arizona and New Mexico regions. Striped tail scorpions get their unique name from the dark brown stripes that line its tail. Like any other scorpion, this species is fast-moving. Scorpion Prevention To avoid run-ins with scorpions, eliminate harborage sites around your home, including woodpiles, trash and debris. Homeowners should also consider removing stones and landscape timbers from the property, and store firewood at least twenty feet from the home and at least five inches up off the ground. Scorpions from the Southwestern United States are also known to enter structures through torn screens and holes and cracks in building exteriors, so it’s equally important to seal cracks and holes on the outside of the home with caulk and repair any damaged window and door screens. These pests also enter homes through poorly fitted garage and entry doors.

Make A Difference We are all busy and distracted these days, and it can often be difficult to find ways to make a difference to those less fortunate in our communities. However, today it is simpler than ever to give back, and you do not have to alter your hectic routine to make an impact.
Give back while you shop If you want to make a difference with your shopping dollars, look for retailers that give a percentage of their profits to those in need. Many retailers and grocery stores also provide shoppers the opportunity to donate to causes when they are at the checkout register. With just a couple of extra clicks, you can opt to add a small contribution to your total bill to provide resources to a worthy cause. Give while you work up a sweat Several apps on the market allow you to donate to your charity of choice for every mile you walk, run or bike - the miles can even add up as you carry your phone around all day. All you have to do is download an app, select your favorite charity & get moving!
50 Years 1969-2019
Give back while you declutter Next time you join in on the Marie Kondo craze to clear out your closets, consider sparking even more joy by donating gently used items to a local nonprofit. Clothing and goods you no longer use can be life-changing for those in need. Give your time With crammed schedules, it can seem like a big commitment to volunteer, but today’s nonprofits offer flexible arrangements. Most nonprofits welcome any level of assistance, even one-time engagements or a couple of hours a month. Contact a local nonprofit you are interested in to ask about volunteering opportunities. Making a difference with your dollars or giving your time can feel great, and it can also be effortless. Find a way to make a difference that works for you - and then go for it!

Life As A Caregiver It has been a while since I have written regarding my mother’s struggle with Alzheimer’s disease, primarily because there hasn’t been much more to share. Her condition continues to deteriorate…and I continue to visit her and tell her how much I love her. All I can say is that she apparently is not ready to leave this earth yet. However, there IS something new to share regarding my personal quest to educate and explore the path of Alzheimer’s disease. About a year ago, I attended a seminar put on here in Arizona about GeneMatch. GeneMatch is a program to identify people interested in being matched to Alzheimer’s prevention studies based in part on their genetic information. Approximately 80% of research studies do not complete enrollment on time because they cannot recruit enough eligible volunteers. GeneMatch was established to recruit participants for Alzheimer’s prevention studies, using genetic testing (through free cheek swab kits) to match volunteers with research opportunities. So, since one feels so helpless in finding something they can do to help in the battle against this miserable disease, I signed up! I received a kit about a month later, did the cheek swab as they instructed, sent it back… and waited. Nearly a year went by before I heard back, but when they called and asked if I was still interested in the program, I was very excited and, of course, said yes. They explained that the first meeting would last nearly three hours and would consist of many interview-type questions (about family history, my state-of-mind, my current health), a short memory test, and a presentation by an accredited genetic counselor about the genetic test results the cheek swab would tell me about my APOE gene results and my genetic risk associated with Alzheimer’s disease. It would be up to ME if I wanted to know those results. If the results were certain combinations, then I would 14 Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine
semi-qualify for the clinical research study (or Part B)….once I went through another round of testing.
That was yesterday. It was one of the most interesting and informative presentations I have ever been exposed to. I had decided NOT to decide on whether I would find out the results of my APOE gene match until both the interview and presentation were completed. However, I had given tremendous thought to the pros and cons of learning those results. The biggest negative for me was once I learned them, I couldn’t UN-learn them. So if my decision was to find out, then I would have to live with the information…it would be etched in my brain… good or bad. BUT…if I learned the results and they were bad, then I would be able to alert my friends & family ahead of time and maybe do things I might not otherwise do in life. I knew what my odds were: one parent (my mother) had Alzheimer’s….the disease is more prevalent in women; her sister (my aunt) had it and my uncle (her brother) had it. My father had passed away fairly young so we don’t know if he would have had it or not, and my grandparents on both sides didn’t live that long to show any symptoms. When the time came and they asked me to decide, without hesitation, I wanted to know. Submitted by Kathy Linton
