From Me To You...
Well this is not a good way to start your day. Take it from me, all that does is get me angry and no-one wants to start a trip For years now, my alarm has been a blaring, angry. So I recently had an epiphany. Why not cacophony of sound. An angry klaxon, shrieking change my alarm to something soothing? My at me, “Wake up! Wake Up! WAKE UP! Vistancia Vets As we enter into the month of November it is a time when we celebrate our nation’s Veterans. Here in Vistancia, we have our own Veterans organization called the Vistancia Vets. I had the pleasure of speaking with Jeff Carpenter who is the founding organizer of the group and he shared with me some history of the group and plans for the future. Jeff is a Marine Corps Veteran who retired in 2015 and settled in Vistancia.
The Vistancia Vets started back in 2013 and for a few years met regularly and was a place for fellow Veterans to meet and socialize. After a few years the meetings began to taper off and the group stopped meeting; however, in 2017 the group restarted with new vision and purpose and looks to continue to provide a space for Veterans to connect. One of the greatest aspects of the group is that it is a multi-generational association with Veterans who have served during the Korean War through present day. The group also welcomes spouses, active duty and reserves or anyone who is interested in working with and supporting the Veteran community. Vistancia
Vets currently meet once a quarter and has about 15 regular members who attend. There is no cost to become of a member of the group. The next meeting is Saturday December 1st, 5-7:00pm at the Mountain Vista Club.
One thing that has helped reignite the VistanciaVets group was working with the Trilogy Veterans organization. “They were very welcoming and supportive if our idea to get the Vistancia group back up and running” stated Jeff Carpenter. As an established group in the area, the Trilogy Veterans group has assisted with guidance and mentorship. That is what supporting Veterans is all about. “We would like to see the group grow and be able to provide assistance and even possibly help to create a Vistancia Veterans Memorial.” “If you currently serve, are a Veteran or someone related to a person who has served, come check out the group” asks Carpenter. For more information, please reach out to vistanciacets@ gmail.com. For all of our Veterans in Vistancia, thank you for your service! Submitted by Chris Campbell, Marine Corps Veteran

Peace On Earth “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)
Really? Really, God, give thanks in all circumstances? Even when my circumstances are difficult? Yes. And giving thanks gives us new perspective. Hospice social worker, Grace Bluerock, learned a lot about thanksgiving from those who were dying. It changed the way she views gratitude. The following includes ideas from both Grace and me. Too often we reserve gratitude for just the big things, the things we really want. We’re grateful, at least momentarily, for a special vacation, a big screen TV, a new car, or a new home. However, there are many more opportunities for gratitude that we might be overlooking. Here are a few to consider in this month of celebrating Thanksgiving: Give thanks for special moments with loved one. Cherish their presence. We never know what tomorrow will bring. We don’t know when one or the other might pass or move. Capture each opportunity to be together. Meeting for lunch, taking a walk, and sitting and visiting are all moments to cherish.
faithful love. Stroke them, watch them, be comforted by them.
Be grateful for friendships. Take a moment and send a card of thanksgiving, make that phone call, or send a text of appreciation. What brings us joy is less about stuff and more about fellowship with others. Give thanks for your faith and the comfort and guidance and joy you experience in it. Give thanks for the love of God offered through God’s grace. Share the wonder of being a child of God with those struggling to find reasons to give thanks. Gather with others to celebrate worship and express gratitude to God. If you don’t have a church home, check us out at Spirit Song. Yes, we’re still here. We meet at Vistancia school on Sunday mornings at 9:00. Also, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic meets at Vistancia school in the afternoon and numerous other churches are not far distant. May you discover the joy of a grateful heart in every circumstance! Submitted by Valerie Fairchild, pastor of Spirit Song church in Vistancia
Be grateful for each new day. Treat it as a new beginning, a new opportunity to share your love, your smile, a kind word. Look for chances to do something new or unusual. Giving thanks opens you to new possibilities. Make time to get outside and give thanks for the simple things: a birdsong, the sun backlighting a saguaro cactus, an amazing cloud formation, a child’s delighted laughter, the feel of the sun, walking barefoot in the grass, or gazing at the stars. Give thanks for pets and their unconditional, Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine

Trilogy Veterans Club They call it “Thirsty Troop Thursday,” when members of the Trilogy at Vistancia Veterans Club get together on the second Thursday of each month to share war stories, exchange experiences in the military, and enjoy the company of like-minded military veterans.
The Veterans Club has a membership of over 180 members and includes all military branches of service, including the Royal Canadian Air Force and the United Kingdoms’ Royal Navy. The club, which is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, supports a wide-variety of charities including, Soldier’s Best Friend, Veterans Outreach Center, and U.S. VETS. This month, Triple T as club members call it, was a little more special. Trilogy Veterans Club President, Scott Duke, along with over 20 members of the club were on hand to present a
Letter of Appreciation to the owner of the Cross Eyed Cricket, Mark Gaydosz. Duke noted, “Mark and his staff provide exceptional support to the Trilogy Veterans Club. Whether it is supporting our Veterans Club Golf Tournament in November, monthly meeting space for Triple T, or making room for club members to watch interservice rivalry games on the sports bar’s big screen, they are always welcoming and seeing what they can do to make our experience with them better.” While presenting the framed letter to the owner, Duke talked about the club’s plan to purchase gym-sized military flags, and how honored Mark will be to have them on display at the sports bar. In Gaydosz’ remarks, he thanked the Veteran Club and mentioned,” We do what we can help out, but that is the least we can do to try to give something back to our military veterans.” Submitted by Scott Duke, Trilogy Veterans Club President

effects on our bodies, at times completely counteracting all of the steps we’re taking to lose weight through diet and exercise. Cortisol or the “stress hormone” is such an important factor in fat loss and muscle tissue gain. Studies have shown that patients on professional weight loss programs monitored by physicians found it impossible to lose weight when their sleep patterns were not regular.
As a mom of three kids, I am constantly fighting with my body to lose weight. I try to get plenty of exercise and eat right but many times I just do not see the results that I expect. Yum Yum!
The French term amuse bouche refers to dishes that are served according to the chef’s selection alone and often accompanied by a complementing wine. Well at Amuse Bouche in Surprise, the menu is very fluid, as the chef continues to change the featured items based on his own favorites, feedback from his regulars, and what ingredients are in season, while retaining select staple items such as the fabulous French Onion Soup (yes, this is the best we have ever had). Under new management since Feb-2018, Amuse Bouche’s Chef John is often seen in the dining room interacting with guests pairing wines, sharing stories, and generally enjoying the atmosphere. Chef John likes being himself and making food that people with enjoy in a variety of cuisines using nothing but the best ingredients sourced from around the country.

Some of our favorites are the Duck Drumettes in a Sweet Ginger Orange Glaze, Beef Bourguignon, Lobster Mac & Cheese, Chicken Pot Pie, and the Veggie Pastries. Do not leave before asking about the Bread Pudding and Homemade Pies. “We are looking forward to brunch in the near future.. … … hope to see you there., but be sure to make a reservation!” Amuse Bouche offers a full service bar with daily Happy Hour specials and high-end wine selections on weekends. “If you don’t like the wine, we will buy it back and drink it ourselves!” jokes Chef John. Reservations are not required but highly recommended, especially for Sunday brunch, as well as weekend evenings. Be aware the restaurant is closed on Mondays. Catering services are also available.
What makes Amuse Bouche exciting are the Delicious dishes and the artful presentation which is representative of the chef’s passion for cooking. Workouts You Need You want to live the healthiest life possible and you realize that to do so, you can’t rely on the same old exercise routine. You need to change it up and adjust your plans as you grow older. It may seem daunting, but the good news is that staying fit can be easier than you think.
“Many older adults know their fitness routines have to change as they age because of injuries, chronic aches and pains, or even shifts in the exercises they enjoy,” says Julie Logue, SilverSneakers(R) training manager for Tivity Health. “That’s why finding the right health plan during Medicare’s open enrollment period is so important. It’s especially valuable to find a health plan that includes SilverSneakers, which is the nation’s leading fitness program designed exclusively for older adults. It’s much easier to be consistent with exercise when you find a program you love.” Yoga is popular with fitness enthusiasts of all ages, and for older adults, practicing yoga can improve balance, flexibility, mental focus, core strength and breathing efficiency. It can also be

a wonderful stress reliever. If you are new to the practice of yoga, or if you feel unsure or unstable during any class, consider using a wall or chair to aid you in your balance for certain poses. Strength training, sometimes called resistance training, supports bone health and aids in the prevention of osteoporosis, improves your balance and supports a healthy weight. Regular strength training also can make everyday activities easier. Whether it’s dance or another calorie-burning cardio exercise like cycling or walking, getting your body moving is a fun and healthy way to improve your lifestyle. Cardio exercise has also been shown to improve your coordination, agility and reaction time, as well as help you manage your blood pressure and improve cognitive function. Improvements to your regular exercise routine will support you in your goal of living a healthy life, but you can take the next step with the support of a program that includes classes, digital tools and workouts designed with seniors in mind.

Be Thankful
As Thanksgiving approaches we take inventory of our lives and what we are grateful for. But what if you had few to none of these things? I have spent the last two years travelling between here and Kenya. I have gone to bed with the threat of waking up to war. I have shared my room with rats, snakes, cockroaches and many other crazy African bugs. And I have learned to not take so many things for granted in my life. Working at a children’s home with 184 kids, I have seen the poorest of poor. I have lived in the bush and at times without running water, electricity and common conveniences. What I have learned is heart wrenching and joyful at the same time. These kids have come from various situations, some survived near death, torture and other atrocities hard to imagine. They are true survivors. The children at the home have next to nothing, but they are happy! They are given a chance at an education, they eat three good meals a day and have dorms with beds and bathrooms. Bathrooms are a true luxury and not easy to find when travelling around Kenya. Usually it’s a cho, meaning a wood hut with a hole in the ground and you better be carrying tissue with you too. These children also get medical care that very few can afford. Even with these amazing opportunities, they still live in a way that most westerners could not understand. The first thing
Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine
people here usually say to me is “how awful and sad it must be”, but It’s not. It is obviously not an easy life, but I am humbled to be a part of these kid’s futures and helping make their little piece of the world better. It is not easy but as a group we are making a difference. My experience in living there has taught me to be grateful for not only the big things in life but things that no one here even thinks about. It is always more of a culture shock for me to return to The States then returning to Kenya since life is hard but simple there. I wish everyone could have the experience of living in a third world country. My purpose is still to help bring awareness about Kenyan struggles and especially the wonderful children’s home that has stolen my heart. As this holiday season comes around, be thankful, be grateful but most of all don’t forget to count the ‘little’ things that we have been blessed with. When the pie burns, the turkey is dry, crazy Aunt Mary lets her mouth run off and you missed that Black Friday deal, take a breath and step back. Look around at what is important and let it go. Wine Parings Have you ever looked at a wine list and wished it actually told you what the wine tastes like? Have you ever wanted wine connoisseurs to stop swirling and sniffing, and just take a big sip? Well, you’re not alone and Dan Dunn is on a mission in the name of all things craft to take the stuffiness out of wine, make it more approachable, and let people know it’s not about the glass you drink it out of, it’s what’s in it that matters. Better yet, buck tradition, ditch the fancy stemmed glass and grab a rocks glass. “Bourbon barrel-aged wines are trending right now, and they are a great gateway for guys who typically drink craft beer and bourbon,” says Dunn. Forget everything you’ve heard about pairing wines with Brie and apples, he says. In the man’s own words, here are Dunn’s pairings. 1. With a big, juicy burger Think of a great hamburger as you would a classic artist such as Paul Simon. Both are
something special on their own, but when paired with the right partner - be it a robust cabernet sauvignon or a spindly, curly-haired tenor from Queens - well, that’s when the real magic happens. Alas, Simon and Garfunkel called it quits a long time ago, but I’m happy to report that cab and burgers are still making beautiful music together. 2. With pork The pig is indeed, as Homer Simpson once put it, “a wonderful, magical animal.” You should know going in, though, that pairing with pig is a delicate dance. For smoky roasted pork, you can go with a little richer, heavier red - say, cabernet sauvignon - but try the same thing with a honey or maple-glazed ham and you’ve got a mouthful of clash. For sweeter preparations, think midbodied reds like a bourbon barrel-aged red blend, aged in charred bourbon barrels for 6 months, delivering a finish as smoky as it is smooth. 3. With lamb No matter how it’s cooked - grilled, braised or roasted - that rich, savory meat demands robust red wine at its side, like a nice zinfandel, with its larger-than-life berry fruit character. The bottom line is, if you enjoy the wine then drink up!

Managing Depression Sadness and grief are normal human emotions. These feelings can often last for a short period of time. However, when these emotions last for many days or weeks, depression becomes a concern. According to the American Psychiatric Association, depression is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, depression is among the most treatable of mental disorders. Between 80 percent and 90 percent of people with depression eventually respond well to treatment. Almost all patients gain some relief from their symptoms. It can be difficult to know when feeling down is turning into something more concerning. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, a major depressive episode may include some of these symptoms: * Persistent sad, anxious or “empty” mood * Feelings of hopelessness * Feelings of guilt, worthlessness or helplessness * Restlessness, irritability * Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies
18 Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine
* Decreased energy * Difficulty concentrating, remembering or making
decisions * Insomnia, early-morning awakening or oversleeping * Low appetite and weight loss, or, overeating and weight gain * Thoughts of death or suicide * Persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment
Three steps that can help Step 1: Get screened by a qualified mental health expert. Step 2: Talk to your healthcare provider about a treatment plan. Depression can be managed with the right treatment options. Step 3: Follow a treatment plan closely and take medications as prescribed. Depression doesn’t discriminate. It impacts all races, ages and genders. Keep in mind, if you are ever feeling suicidal thoughts, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-2738255 immediately.

Health Tips For Busy Moms Mothers are the CEO of the home. Organizing schedules, paying the bills, doing food shopping, managing pick-ups and drop-offs, and making sure everyone is healthy is just part of the job. Unfortunately, because they are so busy taking care of others, many moms often put off taking care of themselves or scheduling their own health appointments. Making your health a priority can help you stay healthy and keep illnesses at bay. Here are a few tips to help: You harp on the kids about the importance of a good night’s sleep, but when it comes to your own sleep, it’s often the first thing that’s sacrificed. Make it a priority to get 7 or 8 hours of quality rest each night. Keeping the bedroom quiet, cool, dark and free from the distractions of devices such as cell phones and tablets can help you relax and sleep. Just like with your kids, proactively seeing a doctor every year can help you tackle health issues head on rather than putting them off until they become a bigger problem. During wellness visits, your doctor will use health indicators like
weight, blood pressure and heart rate to screen for common conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. Doctors can then recommend treatments to help you stay healthy and feel your best.
Your doctor’s treatment plan may include a prescription medication. Doctors advise that it’s important to fill and use the medication as prescribed. If you are not insured, or if your health insurance plan doesn’t cover the medication you were prescribed, you can check a free prescription savings program called Inside Rx which can help save an average of 40 percent off brand-name and 80 percent off retail on generic medications. Eligibility requirements and a complete list of the medications offered through the program can be found at InsideRx.com. You meticulously pack your kids’ lunches, but when it comes to your own, sometimes you eat whatever you can grab. Eating well helps fuel the body and mind, so skip the junk and instead eat wholesome meals three times a day with healthy snacks in between. These simple tips will help you prioritize health as you take care of your family, so you can feel your best today and in the future!
