I can feel it in the air, the weather has finally started to change. In the morning I take my coffee outside while I play with the dogs and I no longer have to brace myself before I step onto the patio. The promise of the balmy days we all love hangs in the air, and even though the thermometer is still upwards of comfortable by mid-afternoon, I know it is coming. Fall.
I always find it amazing that even though the miserable portion of the year is shorter than the beautiful one, it feels like summer is exponentially longer than Fall/Winter/ Spring. And then there is my sweater and boot collection. I have never met a sweater, sweatshirt, jumper or hoodie that I didn’t like. Despite the knowledge that I will only wear a small percentage of them each year, they call my name and I can always justify getting more. Now that we have children who are or have been attending 4 separate universities I have an even better excuse to buy them. After all I can’t show favoritism!
When we lived on the east coast boots and winter coats were something you bought every
year and wore until they were destroyed from water or snow or salt. I spent quite some time in the UK last winter and when I was packing I found that I didn’t own a single pair of waterproof shoes, let alone boots! So off I went on a mission to find the perfect pair. I looked forward to wearing them in the appropriate climate, walking through piles of snow and feeling that delicious crunch as my foot broke through the top layer. So imagine my dismay when Britain had one of the mildest winters on record. Plenty of rain but only a few snowstorms and nothing that left enough snow to even make a snowball.
I guess that means a trip to Flagstaff is in order this winter. Thank goodness we have the option to drive a couple of hours to a colder climate - and this year I have my fingers crossed for a winter wonderland!

Water is a precious resource that we all need. The City of Peoria has been making significant investments to safeguard our community from drought and shortage conditions for the past 25 years. One of these investments includes being a member of the Arizona Municipal Water Users Association, (AMWUA).
You may have noticed media coverage of the Colorado River water shortage and the low water levels at Lake Mead and Lake Powell. There is no immediate impact to the City’s ability to deliver water to Peoria customers. Below are some questions and answers to the water concerns on the Colorado River.
What does a Colorado River shortage mean?
The federal government declares a shortage when the amount of water in Lake Mead drops to levels below a certain threshold. When a shortage is declared, participants in the agreements reduce their water use by preagreed amounts. The idea is to reduce water use so that the water being taken out of Lake Mead more closely aligns with the supply of
water flowing into Lake Mead. Agreements have been signed by many parties, including Arizona indicating the amount of water each party would need to reduce. Not all participants reduce water use by the same amount due to many longstanding laws and agreements.
How has Peoria prepared for the shortage?
Peoria has prepared for shortage scenarios like the one we are facing now through decades of planning and significant investments in expanding water reclamation facilities, underground water storage facilities, and expanding conservation programs.
What is the Peoria Drought Management Plan? This plan exists to guide the city through shortage and drought coordination. The plan defines four progressive stages, criteria to determine which stage of the plan the city should implement, and outlines practical and necessary activities to assure the City of Peoria’s intentional water stewardship. Peoria’s Drought Management Plan gives a number of different suggestions to manage in drought situations.
Submitted by Councilmember Brad ShaferWe all have what we call the inner game, or Thought Habits, habitual ways of thinking. They allow us to either talk ourselves into or out of opportunities daily. Thought Habits also impact whether one’s thinking is positive or negative. Quotes are one of many ways people use to keep their thoughts positive. We are aspirational by nature, and quotes can help us see something in ourselves we want to change or serve as a reminder about who we want to become. For example, a quote by W. Clement Stone became an important belief and driving force in my life. “To every disadvantage, there is a corresponding advantage. Find it!.” Maybe I saw the “find it” as more of a challenge. I am grateful that his quote has become an important part of my life. Imagine developing the thought habit of finding solutions to problems rather than being stuck in the problem.
When I heard Tony Robbins say, “Success leaves clues.” My realization – there is no need to reinvent the wheel. Learn from the masters. Please take what you learn and use it to go further, faster, and easier through life.
Once we make the decision to take responsibility for our lives, we understand we can control our thinking and develop habits that assist us in winning the inner game. Henry Ford said it best, “Think you can or think you can’t; either way, you will be right.” Make this your mindset for life, and you will possess a belief that will instill confidence. You will also realize you now have the 1st Key of Success – right thinking. What quote motivates you the most?
Next month we will learn about the 2nd Key of Success. Until then, focus on your thought habits, as it is the foundation for the 1st Key of Success –The Key of Thinking.

We are moving into the “pies and presents” season of the year ~ so many memories are associated with certain aromas and recipes ~ and this one is no different. As a young child I remember my mother mixing up this dough by hand with a wooden spoon ~ the recipe dates back more than 200 years, and if you want to be “authentic” to the time period, you could use lard instead of vegetable shortening!
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream the sugar and shortening; add molasses and the eggs. Sift together dry ingredients and mix into wet ingredients until dough forms. Roll into walnut-size balls and dip in granulated sugar.
As with many recipes, time and personal interpretation find their way ~ I use a stand mixer these days and a cookie scoop for consistent sizing, and I also often add in some fresh grated ginger or finely minced candied ginger plus a ½ tsp of cardamom to my version ~ the recipe here reflects as it was originally written. approx 3 dozen cookies C granulated sugar (and extra for dipping) C vegetable shortening or lard C molasses eggs tsp kosher salt tsp baking soda tsp cinnamon tsp ginger C flour
Arrange on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 12 minutes. Let cool on rack.
This dough keeps well in the refrigerator, so you can easily bake these to order throughout the week (if they last that long!) Wonderful with a glass of cold milk or a cup of hot tea!
Submitted by Maureen WoodsEstate planning does not need to be complex or confusing. You deserve to have your questions answered and have documents that help you when you need it most. On-line services and computer forms simply do not address the variety of issues that might arise.
The court process of probate can be avoided with a revocable trust for some but others can utilize a beneficiary deed with more ease.
Privacy laws can prevent you from being assisted by your spouse or trusted friend or family member. Powers of attorney can be give the right person the legal authority to help you. However, you need the correct power of attorney
– whether it be for finances; medical health or mental health.
Inheritances for minors, whether children or grandchildren, can be bogged down by a court conservatorship, if a trust is not used. A court conservatorship is more costly and burdensome than a probate.
A good estate plan provides centralized management for your assets whether you are incapacitated or upon your death and can avoid obstacles and disputes when there are multiple disputes.

I was convinced I would get a “Jersey” accent when I lived there while I was in seminary. It didn’t help that I worked at an after-school program with a supervisor who had a heavy, heavy accent. It doesn’t take much for my husband to take on his Louisiana accent, just a conversation with his family from Baton Rouge.
We all “take on” some of the behaviors of the people around us. Maybe it is an interest in fishing because we grew up in a house that took regular fishing trips. Or maybe it is eating chicken tortilla soup when you are sick because that is what your Mom made you. In psychology and family systems theory it is called “surrounding togetherness pressure.” It is the same pressure that continues holiday traditions like passing around a fruitcake, white elephant style gift giving, or others. It is “surrounding
togetherness pressure” that emphasizes family football on Sundays over other afternoon activities. This pressure can be good or bad. Surrounding togetherness pressure is how values are passed on, but it can also be the family pressure to conform to unhealthy behaviors as well.
The passage from Matthew 5:48 “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect” has me wondering if this is a form of family pressure. Are we expected to be perfect as God is perfect? How can we be perfect like our Heavenly Father? God is God, we can never be God! But when I think about the verses prior, I see that Matthew is talking about loving people. God loves perfectly and we should strive to love as God loves. We should love enemies and friends. It is kind of like surrounding ourselves with God so that we pick up God’s accent, or we allow God to establish the “surrounding togetherness pressure” that influences us above and beyond all other influences. We do not have to be perfect as we know it, just work on being like our heavenly parent who sets the example for us.
