From Me To You... Time is a funny thing. For many years time seemed to go so slowly. Every day lasted an eternity and there was little to distinguish one day from another. I measured my life in seasons or school and no school. Admittedly I was raising four children under 10 and wrangling my life in a new state, but still... I guess it is true that when you have small children the days are long and the years are short. I look back at that time in my life and remember just getting through the day.
Now it is very different. I spent months planning a trip this year. Coordinating schedules with the friends we were travelling with, finding and booking the best place to stay, organizing the things that needed to be taken care of here while we were gone. Then suddenly we were in the car, driving to our destination. The vacation itself flew by and we were home! Blink. Now I am submerged in my life again, that takes no time at all by the way, and looking ahead to other events. I celebrated a milestone birthday this month and perhaps that is why I am musing on the
All Relief, No THC
subject of time. By all intents and purposes I am now middle aged. Wow, how did that happen? My parents were old when they hit this birthday, heck they were old 10 years before this birthday! And here I am, feeling the healthiest I think I have ever felt, more secure in myself as a person in my personal life, my marriage and my friendships. And yet. I have this label. There is a theory in Sociology that is called the Self-Labelling Prophesy. Basically it posits that if you name someone in a certain way then that person will live up to the moniker you give them. The Smart Kid will achieve more success academically, The Bad Seed will feel like there is no point in trying and will continue to act out, The Bad Dog will continue to chew your baseboards and jump on the furniture. And The Middle Aged Woman will get ready for retirement and take up knitting. I don’t think I will go down that way. I already know how to knit and honestly it is not for me. I have not even begun to do everything I am capable of and want to do. I just have to get to retirement so I have the time to do some of those things! And there it is again. Rushing towards something to be able to do the thing I think I can’t do yet. I need to slow down and be in the moment. That is a phrase we are hearing a lot recently. It is apt though. We all could do with stopping and appreciating the now. Look around at your life and see what you have achieved already. What is good in your day? Whether it is as big as buying a new house or as small as checking off an item on your to-do list. Savor it. Enjoy the victories and don’t let time drag you along in its wake. Until next time...

Medicare Enrollment Medicare Open Enrollment is about to kick off. For most people already enrolled in Medicare, the annual Open Enrollment period (Oct. 15 through Dec. 7) is the only opportunity to make changes to your existing Medicare coverage. Even if you are happy with your Medicare coverage, you should take the time to explore your options. There may be a plan that is better suited to your health and financial needs that could save you hundreds of dollars in the upcoming year. During Medicare Open Enrollment, Medicare beneficiaries can switch Part D prescription drug plans; switch Medicare Advantage plans, which offer health (and often drug) coverage through private insurers; switch from Original Medicare, administered by the federal government, to Medicare Advantage; or switch from Medicare

Advantage back to Original Medicare. All changes made to coverage during Open Enrollment take effect on Jan. 1, 2020. Dan Klein, president and CEO of the Patient Access Network (PAN) Foundation, an independent charitable organization dedicated to helping people afford out-of-pocket costs for prescribed medications, offers the following tips for navigating Medicare Open Enrollment. 1. Do your homework Take the time to shop around and understand the benefits and costs of each plan so you can find the coverage that works best for you. Changes to your health status, doctors or other healthcare providers, prescription drugs or budget may mean that your current plan is no longer the most cost-effective choice for you. Insurance companies can also make annual changes to their plans that might affect the drugs covered, provider networks and your out-ofpocket costs. 2. Make sure your doctors and providers are innetwork Before selecting a Medicare Advantage plan, it’s smart to check that your preferred doctors, hospitals and pharmacies are in the plan’s provider network. If you visit a doctor, hospital or pharmacy that is outside of the network, you will likely have to pay more. If your insurance company has changed your plan’s provider network for next year, you may want to use Open Enrollment to switch to a plan that will include your current doctors, hospitals and pharmacies in-network to lower your medical costs. Note: With Original Medicare you can go to any doctor that accepts Medicare patients. 3. Make sure your medications are covered

Driver’s Ed
If you had to go back to driving school today, would you pass the parallel parking portion? What if the instructor tested your knowledge of car maintenance? Learning how to drive and taking care of your vehicle are integral parts of growing up. In a recent Gauge Index survey, Hankook Tire found that nearly half (47 percent) of Americans got their driver’s license the first day they were eligible. But the learning doesn’t have to stop there. In fact, it shouldn’t! To keep drivers up to speed on vehicle maintenance basics, Hankook Tire outlines three things you may not have learned in driving school, but should have: Buckle up ... and check your tires
and filling up tires with air (15 percent). Navigate the parallel parking spot Let’s face it: parking can be tricky. There’s a plethora of distractions and frustrations and a limited number of parking spots, particularly near popular locations. And while you may get the basics of parallel parking down from driver’s ed, the Gauge found that nearly two-thirds (64 percent) of Americans still said parallel parking was the most difficult driving skill to master. But perhaps practice does make perfect, because more than two-thirds (69 percent) of Americans still consider themselves “good” or “expert” parallel parkers. Don’t rely on technology alone You may not have learned to use a backup camera in driving school, but nowadays, new
Everyone knows when it comes to driving, it’s important to put safety first. But driving safety goes beyond just buckling up. Good car maintenance can lead to a safer drive, so start by kicking the tires before you even get into the car. Hankook found that, had it been part of the driving test, most Americans said they would have gotten the worst grade on tire-related maintenance. Specifically, 40 percent said they would perform the worst at changing a tire, followed by checking tire tread (16 percent)

Fire Safety
This simple fire safety checklist can help ensure your home and family are protected from the threats of smoke, fire and carbon monoxide. 1) Install smoke alarms on every level and in every bedroom. Three out of every five home fire deaths result from fires in homes without smoke alarms or with no working smoke alarms, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). For maximum protection, install smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. 2) Testing and maintaining alarms is key. Alarms should be tested regularly and replaced at least every 10 years. Help ensure your alarms remain in good, working order by changing the batteries at least every six months. For hassle-free protection, install alarms like the First Alert 10-
Year Smoke and CO Alarm available at Lowe’s, which has a sealed 10-year battery - rendering battery removal and replacement a thing of the past. Many cities and states require sealed 10year battery alarms, so check with your local fire department if you do not know what to install. 3) Equip your home with fire extinguishers. Beyond alarms, having fire extinguishers - and knowing how to use them - is an important part of maintaining a safe home for you and your family. Every 24 seconds, a fire department responds to a fire, according to the NFPA, so being prepared to fight small fires is critical. Place extinguishers in convenient locations on every level of the home, in the kitchen and in the garage. 4) Protect against the “silent killer.” An odorless and invisible gas, CO is the number one cause of accidental poisoning and can only be detected with an alarm - yet only 47% of homeowners report owning a CO alarm. Consider hassle-free protection by installing 10-year sealed battery alarms and, just like smoke alarms, be sure to check all CO alarms regularly using the “test” button for continued protection. 5) Plan. Practice. Repeat. Recent consumer research reveals that less than 50% of homeowners have an escape plan - and even fewer practice a plan regularly. Make sure to involve everyone in your household in creating a plan and practice it at least twice every year. As part of this plan, equip second-floor bedrooms with escape ladders and discuss how to use them. Identify two ways out of each room and a

Health Care Powers Of Attorney The medical healthcare power of attorney identifies an agent, a trusted family member or friend, who can give consent to medical treatment if you cannot. If insurance requires transfer to a skilled nursing facility before going home from the hospital, your agent can arrange that for you. Different from other states, the Arizona allows you to authorize your health care agent to follow your instructions for burial or cremation. Otherwise, when there is no surviving spouse, all of the children or other family members may have to be consulted. Another difference from
other states is the mental healthcare power of attorney which helps avoid costly court intervention when there is mental illness, brain injury, dementia or Alzheimer’s. If a person does not have these healthcare powers of attorney, the court must give authority to act. An attorney is needed for the patient and a different attorney for the petitioner. After a court investigation, a hearing is held in open court—in about 45 days after a petition is filed. Time, money and privacy is saved by appointing an agent through healthcare powers of attorney. Home Decor Many interior designers gravitate toward grays or whites as a starting point when building a home’s look and feel, but a new trend is emerging. Homeowners are getting back to basics and finding ways to bring the outdoors in by using neutral earth tones as their blank slate. These wood tones have become the “new neutral” for those beginning their brand-new home design. No matter your style - modern, eclectic or anything in between - the toned-down hues of natural-looking wood surfaces are the perfect starting point for building a versatile, relaxing and high-end look in your home. It’s all natural Finding inspiration from nature can create a more calming retreat in our hectic, constantly connected lives. Start with a neutral and natural palette in the home as the first step to designing your oasis. Incorporating colors found in nature can act as a reminder to disconnect and recharge in your home.
Stay grounded Include a variety of textures from the ground up to transform your space and make it unique. From flooring to decor, finding ways to pull in elements from Mother Nature will turn your home into your haven. Bring out your home’s natural beauty with flooring like Oak hardwood. The textured grains pair beautifully with greenery (faux or natural), and the neutral color complements a variety of earthy paint palettes. Woodland oasis Wood is the perfect element when deciding to bring nature into your home - whether on the floor or on the walls, as an accent or as a headboard. Featuring a variety of wood elements in the decor itself can also allow you to play with mixing different grains, colors and textures throughout the home while still maintaining a seamless overall design. Light and airy To make small spaces feel more open, be sure to accentuate natural light by incorporating mirrors. Try and keep your space clear of clutter and add natural foliage and plants to improve air quality and mood. Installing long, wide planks of flooring will also make your room feel larger. Peace On Earth Be Slow to Assume
Monday is my husband’s and my day off. We are both pastors and with our crazy schedules between serving two churches, we put a high priority on our day off. One morning, we enjoyed sitting out on our porch swing under the ceiling fan having our coffee and talking and enjoying the quiet. We have a pond in our backyard and a water fall and it is a very peaceful place to sit and watch the birds. When it became too warm, we went inside. My husband treats me to a yummy breakfast on our day off. He mixed up pancakes from scratch with whole wheat flour, scrambled eggs with diced orange pepper, tomatoes, onions, chili and cheese, and cooked bacon perfectly. Yes, I am spoiled. I sat at the kitchen island helping with dicing and keeping him company. We took our time eating
HANG em HIGH drapery panels
and savored every bite while enjoying our time together.
About 9:15 the doorbell rang. Now 9:15 is a perfectly reasonable time to go to someone’s home, unless of course, that someone still hasn’t dressed for the day. I peeked around the side of the door. It was a church member dropping something off. After he left, I felt I needed to justify my leisurely morning. I thought about sending a text or an email. Finally, my better senses kicked in. Why do we think we need to explain our actions? I think it is because we have become so judgmental of one another and so quick to assume that what we experience on one day is the norm. This, in turn, makes us worry about what others think of us. Let’s all take a chill pill. Be watchful of your thoughts and comments about others and make sure you aren’t making assumptions based on limited knowledge. Be slow to assume. You don’t know what circumstances or challenges others are facing at that moment. You don’t know what influencers – lost job, tight finances, loss of a loved one, relationship problems, chronic pain – might be at the root of someone’s actions. Maybe, more than anything, the person simply needs acceptance and a bit of kindness. I am thankful Jesus knows me at all times and knows what is behind my behaviors and still loves me unconditionally. I am grateful for second and eightieth and five hundred and thirtieth chances to ask forgiveness and start again. If Jesus can give such great leeway to us, and we are supposed to follow his example, can’t we be more charitable to those around us? Isn’t that part of loving one another? A Facebook group is a page created for an organization, community or business to promote activities. Users can then join the group and post their thoughts on a wall and interact through discussion threads. Groups are a great way to connect with friends and neighbors and have discussions that are relevant to your community such a local business, school activities, criminal activities, lost fur babies, request recommendations, etc.... The main purpose of groups is to help Facebook users socialize around any topic in their community. Once inside the Group, Facebook works only slightly different than your profile. A Group does not use the timeline but rather displays posts in direct chronological order, similar to the pre-timeline manner. Also, members of the Group can see who has seen a post, which is a unique feature for Group accounts. Mountain View magazine has established and facilitates a community Facebook Group for Vistancia called Vistancia Matters. All residents and people with a connection to the community

Staying Active We can often be our own biggest hurdle when it comes to making healthy decisions. But sometimes all it takes is a gentle nudge from a friend or a fun new idea to spark your motivation. Below, find three simple ideas to help you live your best life and boost your mental and physical health.
3. Once you have gone as low as you can, come back up and repeat.
To take a more active role in your health, some health plans, including UnitedHealthcare, offer gym memberships at no additional cost. To learn more, visit UHCMedicarePlans.com. Consult your doctor prior to beginning an exercise program or making changes to your lifestyle or health care routine. Staying mindful: Brain quiz
Staying active: Push-ups While the thought of doing push-ups might be intimidating, there are plenty of ways to make the exercise simpler while still gaining strength in your arms, chest and back. Try a modification on the classic push-up that could even be done on a secure countertop in the convenience of your home. 1. Place your hands on top of a countertop or other firm surface. Make sure to spread your fingers wide.
Keeping your mind active and engaged is a good way to help fend off memory loss. Brain games, like trivia, are fun ways to help keep your memory sharp. 1. Which is the biggest part of your brain? a) Cerebrum b) Cerebellum c) Brainstem 2. How much does the average adult human brain weigh? a) 1 pound b) 3 pounds c) 6 pounds
2. As you lower yourself toward your hands, keep your shoulder blades down and back.

Life As A Caregiver Today, I was able to fulfill a goal of mine since moving to Arizona. It was a personal goal and one I was most passionate about…and thanks to a good friend of mine who has connections into Arizona’s medical community, I was able to meet and visit with Dr. Thomas Beach. Dr. Beach (or just Tom, as he directed me), is an MD, Head and Senior Scientist at the Civin Laboratory for Neuropathology, and Director of the Brain and Body Donation Program, (which are both part of the Banner Sun Health Research Institute here in AZ), specializing in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s research. In other words, he is a brilliant researcher and doctor making strides at battling the Alzheimer’s epidemic.
We toured his ‘brain bank” as he explained the various findings they continue to uncover from the brain tissue they acquire. One fact that struck me: his brain bank will freeze the brain tissue on someone who has expired within 3 HOURS upon their death, if they are a brain donor. They always have over 1,000 at any one time in which to study. And they are the ONLY research institution in the WORLD that is able to do this, primarily because Dr. Beach feels the longer the tissue is allowed to break-down, the less time they have to determine how Alzheimer’s compromised it. Amazing. I had a few specific questions for him, as understanding and communicating about Alzheimer’s disease has become my mission. One question for him was: How close are we to finding a cure? His answer was bleak: “Not very!” The sad part about that is: 20% of people over 80 years of age will develop some form of dementia and there’s nothing we can do about it. At least, not yet. But he and his team continue to test and focus on answers.
blood-relatives who are or have suffered from Alzheimer’s…like I have) can take to block the disease or keep it at bay? His answer: “No, unfortunately, there isn’t.” ‘However’, he continued, ‘that isn’t to say there aren’t things one can do to help the brain handle the disease better’. It didn’t sound like much of an alternative, but I listened. He spoke first about DNA testing…because he knew I wanted to know the pros and cons of that. There are reliable tests that can determine if someone has the E4 gene (the Alzheimer’s one), of which there are two. Those tests would not include the ones you can buy online through Amazon (like “23 & Me”, etc). A credible DNA test is administered as a blood test and sent to a specific lab that specializes in testing for Alzheimer’s disease. The advantage of knowing if you have the E4 gene is rather obvious: you can prepare family & friends (and maybe yourself) for what is coming. The disadvantage is that it is haunting for some. Like waiting for a title wave or an earthquake to hit. The knowledge can very easily bring on undue stress and depression. BUT…most importantly… one may have the E4 gene (from one parent), but may have other genes from the other parent that could block the disease from striking. If a person took the test and it was positive, they would have stressed and worried for nothing. Researchers and specialists just can’t be sure what will happen to each and every one of us. He spoke secondly about heart health as being
Another question I had was more about me than anything: Is there anything (any drug) a person of high risk (like someone having several 14 Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine
