Welcome! to the August edition of

life whizzes by unnoticed.

Growing up, my father’s favorite phrase was “Silence is golden!” I guess it was his polite was of telling us to shut up, but we blew it off as just one of those funny things Dad said.

Now that the monsoons are in full swing and some of our mornings are cooling down, I love to sit outside with a cup of coffee and listen to the silence. It is never really silent, there are birds chirping, the occasional car driving past and a dog barking. But in that moment silence truly is golden.

Although silence is a wonderful thing now, when my children were young silence meant trouble. I knew to fear those moments, especially when the silence was followed by an “Uh oh...” That one usually involved calling a handyman.

A family friend once told me that when her 5 children were young she made them sing the whole time they were in the bath. That way she could tend to other things while they played (and got clean).

Silence in that situation meant Danger! I must point out that these children were over 4 at this time and several of them went on to become professional musicians. Perhaps she was onto something.

Peace On Earth In the Silence

Elijah witnessed the power of God in a victory against false prophets. Yet, when Jezebel threatened him, he ran. (Read 1 Kings 18:16f). How often we witness God’s holy hand on our behalf and then flee at the next threat as if God had never stood with us!

God instructed Elijah to stand on the mountain in his presence.

The Lord sent a mighty wind and then an earthquake but the Lord was not in either. “After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire.

And after the fire came a gentle whisper.” (1 Kings 19:12) When Elijah heard the whisper, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out to speak with God. Why did God speak in a quiet voice? This is the same God who

speaks from burning bushes and whirlwinds. Why the quiet? Could it be that God wanted to show Elijah that He is present and at work even without the dramatic displays Elijah witnessed earlier?

Sometimes people say they are waiting to hear from God and wish he’d just hit them over the head with a two by four board.

We seem to believe God can only get our attention through exceptional measures. Or perhaps we’re afraid we’ll miss anything less dramatic.

Could it be that instead of waiting for the extreme, we should listen for God’s quiet voice? God speaks in many ways: through scripture, through the teaching of Jesus, through music and art, through the beauty of creation, and through wise friends. God doesn’t have to shout or be dramatic.

We might find it more effective to quiet our surroundings so we can hear God’s whisper.

We may need to reduce our busyness

and step out of the daily race.

Perhaps it’s time to turn off the electronics for a bit and find that quiet place. Commit to a time of listening. Take time to read scripture. Claim the promises of God. Linger over the passages of God’s grace through Jesus. Let that still small voice penetrate into your awareness.

Jesus said, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27) He was speaking about you and me. When we choose Jesus, we do have the ability to recognize and hear his leading and guidance. When we don’t, we might ask, “Am I listening for the whisper or am I waiting for the thunder?”

Listening is a skill we can learn.

It takes practice and pulling away from our noisy world. However, nothing compares to the joy of hearing God’s guidance!

Yum Yum Seasoning tips to help you savor a great grilling season Flowers are blooming, days are getting longer and temperatures are warmer - you can probably recognize all the signs that grilling season has arrived! But do you know how to best season all the fresh foods you’ll grill this summer?

Sure, a dash of salt and pepper may be all you need for some premium cuts of meat, but creative seasoning with organic spices and herbs can enhance the taste of virtually everything you grill. What’s more, the clean simplicity of organic seasonings perfectly complements the natural healthfulness of grilling.

The organic seasoning experts at Frontier Co-op offer some tips for using seasonings to achieve greater grilling this spring and summer: Dry or wet? That’s the rub Two of the most common ways to add seasonings to grilled food is through the use of a rub or marinade. What’s the difference between the two? It’s not just that one is dry and the other wet, because some rubs are wet, too.

Generally, rubs are mixtures of dry spices that you rub on food to add flavor before cooking.

They’re good for high-fat foods like meat, and often contain salt and sugar, which also promotes the formation of a crust on the food when you grill it. Usually, after applying a rub you’ll want to let the food sit an hour or two before grilling it.

Marinades are typically liquid seasoned with spices to add Mountain View

flavor to food and sometimes tenderize it. You place the food in the liquid and allow it to sit for a set period of time - a few hours to overnight.

When you’re ready to cook, remove the food from the marinade and use a brush or rubber spatula to remove excess marinade before placing the food on the grill.

Marinades are great for vegetables and meat, poultry or fish that tend to be dry.

Other ways to spice things up Of course, seasonings can add flavor to food in multiple ways.

For example, if you’re soaking vegetables or fruit before grilling, you can add herbs and spices to the soaking water. In addition to absorbing liquid, the food will also soak up the great flavor of the seasonings.

Some foods benefit from basting during the grilling process. You can enhance the flavor of the food by adding seasonings to the butter or liquid you use for basting. If you use foil packets to steam fish, veggies or fruit on the grill, you can add seasonings directly atop the food before folding the foil, or add them to a bit of liquid at the base of the packet.

Pairing seasonings with food Some food/seasoning pairings are obvious, like apples and cinnamon or fish and lemon pepper. However, a wide range of seasonings can elevate the flavor of a variety of foods. Here are a few creative pairings to try this summer grilling season: * Cardamom - Pork, apples, pears, citrus fruits, cabbage and carrots * Cloves - Beef, pork, sweet

potatoes, onions, apples, pears, citrus fruits and peaches * Cumin - Hamburgers, pork, chicken (marinades), tofu, tempeh and cabbage * Ginger - Steak, chicken, fish, seafood and fruits * Marjoram - Burgers, chicken, fish, lamp, poultry and vegetables * Poppy seed - Potatoes, cabbage, carrots, onions and zucchini * Saffron - Chicken and fish * Turmeric - Lamb, beans and zucchini Try this recipe for Savory Paprika and Chili Rub the next time you grill meat, tofu or vegetables: Ingredients: 1 teaspoon Ground Paprika 1 teaspoon Chili Powder 2 teaspoons Ground Cumin Seed 1 teaspoon Onion Powder 1 teaspoon Ground Cayenne Chili Pepper 1/2 teaspoon Garlic Powder 4 teaspoons olive oil Directions: Mix all ingredients together and rub into meats, poultry or vegetables (or shake onto soft veggies, tofu or tempeh). Then refrigerate for one hour before grilling.

Living With Faith Is it so difficult to believe?

Faith moves in cycles. When there is trouble we all turn to faith to guide us through the difficult times. When things are great we tend to forget our blessings. Such is the nature of human beings. Such is the essence of randomness as described by Fran Lebowitz, it is scary and yet religion helps explain randomness – the thought that chance is how we arrive at certain destinations in our lives.

We, in some small measure, all contribute in our own way the concept of faith and yet we seem to have lost it during the deliverance. We read statistics that tell us that many don’t believe in God. Where have all the believers gone?

There is an old folk saying that states: “What God does is best – probably.” I think that says it all. We want to understand the nature of God. We try to relate to a concept that has traveled through time and space. We attempt to make sense of death and destruction, sickness and disease. We search for meaning in our lives even when we are at our lowest. So yes, God does the best – we think. Is it no wonder that there is so much doubt?

We are constantly trying to find significance and purpose. Why are we here? Why were we born?

Who is God? Where is God? How many times have we asked these questions? How many times have we failed to find answers? So we hope for the best and more than that we look for faith to guide us to unchartered destinations.

After all, life is a journey to unknown places and things and happenings.

We are here because of creation – we are part of that process that

produces trees and vegetation and animals and dust and rain and sunshine. That is God. We were born because love entered into the equation of completeness and continuity. God is who we say He is and does what we say He will do because God is in each and every one of us. If we are God-like then all we have to do is look into a mirror and see the reflection of goodness and mercy and grandness. God is where we are and where we want Him to be. If we visualize a life without God then surely God will not be there. We have the power to make God appear and disappear.

There is a famous essay written

by Margaret Fishback Powers titled “Footprints” that speaks to these questions in a very spiritual way: “One night I dreamed a dream.

I was walking along the beach with my God. Across the sky flashed scenes from my life. For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, one belonging to me and the other belonging to God. When the last scene of my life flashed before me, I looked back at the footprints in the sand. There was only one set of footprints. I realized that this was at the very lowest and saddest times of my life.

This really bothered me, so I questioned God. ‘God, you told me when I decided to follow You that You would walk and be with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times of my life, there is only one set of footprints in the sand. I don’t understand why, when I needed you the most, You would leave me.’

And God said, ‘My precious child, I love you and will never leave you. During your times of trial

and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.’”

It is so difficult to believe because of troubled times and yet it is this belief that sustains us and gives us the courage to go on.

How is this belief fortified? It is present when friends offer their comfort. It is visible when a hand is outstretched to lift us when we fall. It is apparent when communities join together to pray for guidance. This is the faith and hope and solace that God extends to each of us. His hand is there guiding those who give us the confidence to look forward to another day. This is God. Sometimes we look for miracles – some extraordinary occurrence that will show the might of God. We don’t understand that God does not work that way. He works through us. That is why we are here – not one single person, but all of us together climbing that ladder that will determine our destiny. Is it so difficult to have faith? It’s there when we need it and there even when we don’t.

The statistics tell us that we are not a people of faith because somehow, somewhere, that faith was lost and we just can’t seem to find it again. We just don’t seem to realize that all we need do is look.

And I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said: “Here am I; send me.” (Isaiah 6:6) This is the simple truth: We need each other and through that need will we find the One who needs us.

One of a pet owner’s biggest fears will always be losing their beloved pet. I can still remember when my own 16-year-old pup wiggled out of his collar in our backyard. One moment he was lounging in a shady spot enjoying the summer breeze, and just a few moments later there was a secured leash and collar, but no dog! I was lucky to find him a short while later strolling down the middle of our quiet road like nothing had even happened. Money Matters 7 tips for balancing retirement savings and paying for college Most people want to help their children pay for a quality college education, but it can be difficult to balance personal financial goals and funding your kids’ educational aspirations. When retirement savings is sacrificed for college costs, it can be a disservice to the entire family.

To help guide you in determining the best way to pay for your kids’ college while still funding your retirement savings, personal finance expert and host of the So Money podcast Farnoosh Torabi offers seven smart tips.

Tip 1: Don’t put retirement on the back burner.

While funding your children’s college education is important, your retirement savings should take priority. Strive to contribute 10 to 15 percent of your takehome pay toward retirement savings. The reality is college is four years and retirement can be 30+ years. Plus, there’s no scholarship for retirement like there is for college!

Tip 2: Take the free money.

If your workplace retirement plan comes with a match, take it. Contribute the minimum to receive your employer match.

At the end of the day, it’s free money and that’s the best kind.

Tip 3: Involve your children in the college cost discussion.

College is expensive, so make sure you’re discussing with your kids overall costs and what you’re willing to contribute. Have them help research financial aid and scholarship opportunities, too. Remember, you want to find a school that’s the best fit - so don’t let the initial “sticker Mountain View

price” scare your children from applying.

Some private colleges may give the best aid packages, but other times they may not.

Don’t make assumptions and always keep your options open.

Tip 4: Don’t take on more than you can afford.

While involving your children in the discussion, it’s also important to make sure you’re not setting them up for failure when they graduate. As they research student loan possibilities, make sure they’ll be able to comfortably afford payments once they graduate, and that they’re not taking on too much debt.

An easy way to start researching together is to visit College Ave Student Loans and use the configure-it-out tool. Answer a short series of questions regarding how much you’ll borrow, how many years of schooling are left, whether you want to make payments during school or not, etc. This shows your child what repayment will look like under each option so you can both be clear on the details and agree on a game plan.

Tip 5: Consider the college savings plan that’s best for you.

Consider opening a 529 that allows flexible spending toward higher education. Should your child choose to forgo traditional college education or not require the funds set aside, you can easily change the beneficiary to another child or relative.

If you’re skeptical of a 529, consider a Roth IRA if your income limits allow.

Tip 6: Starting late? Play catchup.

If saving for retirement has not been a priority, it’s time to get aggressive. Pare down costs where possible and take advantage of catch-up contributions. People who are 50 or older can contribute an extra $6,000 to their 401(k) or an extra $1,000 to an IRA this tax year.

Tip 7: Don’t become the “bank of Mom and Dad.” You want to help your kids, but once you set the precedent that it’s OK for your children to ask for money, they may feel they can frequently approach you later in life for funds. You want them to grow wings so they can fly independently.

While you should talk with your child about potential majors and career paths, it’s important also to add financial conversations into the mix.

Stress-relief & the Kindness of Others

Life As A Caregiver

I talked about taking care of YOU in my last blog as it related to finding a good caregiver to help give you a respite from caring for your loved one.

There are other things that can help you find ways to take care of yourself, as well. One is fairly obvious. Working-out is probably the best stress-reliever we have.

But that doesn’t mean you have to join an expensive gym or go crazy working-out for hours and hours. Around-the-house remedies are also very effective: a brisk walk around the block, lifting hand weights in your living room while watching tv, practicing yoga, using a hula hoop or jump rope in the garage, dancing to your favorite fast-paced music, or (like I just did) purchasing a mini trampoline & bounce around. Any one of these can help clear your mind and refresh your body.

Craft projects (if you are so inclined) can also relieve stress.

I enjoy creating something with my hands (as long as I have a picture or directions to follow) and have done numerous projects which have brought me enormous amounts of pleasure, healthy frustration, and positive reinforcement. You must choose wisely and not overdue it, but using your creative mind is a very healthy way to release stress. As is reading! Nothing says stressrelief like immersing yourself in a good book!!!

But the most important thing when going through this Alzheimer’s journey is to let those around you know. People can’t help you if they don’t know what you’re going through. In my case, I really do need help from time to Mountain View

time because I am an only child, unmarried and without children.

While it’s not a bad thing to be in this on my own, there are times when it would be nice to have someone to lean on when making tough decisions. NOTE: That is only the case if I were to have a harmonious family. I am thankful that I don’t have to fight or argue with siblings or a spouse on how to care for my mother as some people have to endure.

This new Arizona community of mine has been wonderful in offering their support. Many have offered to come and care for mom for a day so I can have some personal time. The ONLY upsides to mom & Buddy staying in her casita most of the day is that she is safe, she is as comfortable as she can be, and it allows me to do fun things with friends. But I’m never too far from home, unless Rose is there.

When they told me about their plan, I was speechless…and filled with emotion. What a kind, wonderful and selfless gesture… and probably one of the dearest things I have ever had anyone say to me. And who knows….I just might take them up on it!

The point here is….find things to do that make you happy and will mentally & physically give you a break. And reach out for help when you need it. The stronger and calmer you are, the better caregiver you will make and the healthier you will be!

School Zone The ABCs of back-toschool budgeting It’s natural to pack all you can into those few precious summer months, but inevitably they’re gone before you know it. As summer vacations, sleepovers and outdoor grilling come to a close, it’s time to start thinking about going back to school.

You may be working to pay off summer vacation bills when you realize you need to budget and pay for your child’s school supplies, clothing and other related school expenses.

In a recent survey conducted

by Coinstar, about half of U.S. parents with kids between ages five and 18 believe school expenses are increasing. Of those surveyed, 57 percent will create a back-to-school budget.

To ease rising school costs, here are five budgeting tips that will help you get more for your backto-school dollar:
