From Me To You...

Welcome! to the May edition of Mountain View magazine.

I went to the mailbox with a sense of anticipation, a feeling similar to childhood birthdays washed over me. What would I get?

Would I like it? Would it change my life?

I am sure you too have seen or enjoyed the recent rash of subscription box services that have popped up. You can subscribe to a box of make up, clothing, dog toys even your family dinners. Some of these are time savers, others just pander to our childhood love of presents.

Because that is what it feels like. Sure I put down my credit card to enjoy this present, but someone else picked it out for me and took the time to wrap it and send it to my door.

I will admit that I have, in the past, enjoyed a box of food that I wanted to use to expand my family’s dinner repertoire. The measured and decanted oils and vegetables promised a new experience that we could all enjoy making together. That lasted for the first meal. My imagined evenings of bonding over cooking and sharing meals we prepared together fell to the wayside as the food languished in the fridge. The box delivered on its promises but what it did not give me was more time and energy to gather the troops and organise the cooking project. Plus, some of those meals were downright weird.

On Our Cover The brave souls ‘baring all’ on our cover this month are members of the Trilogy Swim Club. These particular members Fred Crawford, Mike Koenig, Ken Loudon, Robert Schwarz, Mieke Herman and Susan Roemer all medalled in the 2017 Senior Olympic Games on March 26th this year. They brought home 16 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals between them!

The group is not solely formed of competitive swimmers. Many members join to maintain or improve their health. Swimming is great for people of all ages but particularly seniors.

“Swimming is an ideal workout for the elderly, mainly because it presents little risk of injury and is low impact. Water exercises work out all the muscle groups in the body, presenting a complete workout for seniors. Here are just a few of the health benefits swimming offers to older adults: • Improves heart health. Swimming makes your heart stronger, larger and improves your cardiovascular health and endurance. It will also lower your blood pressure, improve your circulation and help reduce the risk of heart and lung disease.

• Gentle on the joints. Because swimming is not weight-bearing, it’s easy on the joints for those who suffer from joint pain and discomfort. It’s a fullbody workout that keeps the pressure off your hips, knees and spine.

• Reduces the risk of osteoporosis. Swimming can improve bone mineral density (BMD), which will help fight osteoporosis. This is very important especially for women; a third of women over the age of 50 and a fifth of men experience a bone fracture due to osteoporosis.

• Increases flexibility. While stretching before and after exercising is a sure way to regain flexibility, the act of swimming itself can also help increase your flexibility in your hips, legs, arm and neck. It can also help improve your posture and alleviate back pain.

Every swimmer is welcome, their mission is lifelong fitness through swimming.

At the Saturday practice there are 2 workouts: one for those training competitively and the other for those who are not training for an event but want to reap the health benefits.

Having spent some time with these active adults I can quite honestly say they are a fun, welcoming bunch and they have as much fun with each other as they do in the water. Many of them found swimming again after a life break. It is, for them, a “Forever Young Sport” and they wouldn’t have it any other way. In fact they report that when they have to take a break from swimming, for whatever reason, the impact is felt immediately and then they feel their age.

When I swim for any length of time it gets boring so I asked them how they coped with that. Their secret? Water MP3 players. They can listen to their favorite tunes as they do their laps. If I had thought of that, perhaps I would be a medal worthy swimmer too by now. If only there was a keep your head above water category...

Positive Parenting Instilling garage logic in your kids It’s a long-standing tradition performed at the workbench of American garages - passing garage logic to the next generation. From hammering that first nail to changing a car’s oil, the garage is a living laboratory where parents teach their kids life lessons, self-reliance and problem-solving skills. It can even be an incubator where the seeds of a future profession grow.

Today, instilling that larger vision requires a break from the small screen. Too often, smartphones and video games dominate the attention of kids, replacing time once craved from their parents.

In 2016, National Public Radio reported preteens spend more than four hours per day in front of their screens, and teens spend seven, not including the time spent using these devices for or in school.

Replacing the tablet with a tool in kids’ hands requires parents to be creative and focused. Here are some easy ways to start and, in the process, create a sense of accomplishment and ownership kids won’t forget when it is their time to pay it forward.

Furry Friends As a lifelong New Englander, this will be my first summer as an Arizona resident. I’ve heard a lot about the heat here, much like we New Englanders talk about the snow! However, there are plenty of reasons to love summers in Arizona… pool parties, less traffic, Chase Field’s retractable roof… to name a few. Yet with the Arizona heat, there are some summer safety tips you may want to take into consideration, especially pertaining to your furry friends.

Rattlesnakes are a hot topic (pun intended) for this season.

Rattlesnakes tend to be more active in the spring when they first come out of hibernation and in the late summer, early fall when they breed. They typically find shade on sunny days, coming out at dusk when the temperatures are cooler.

Rattlesnakes cannot hear you but are alerted to your presence through the vibrations of your step.

Never, ever leave your furfriends in the car, not even for a quick coffee stop. It only takes minutes for your car’s internal temperature to quickly rise.

All in all, make sure your family pets have access to plenty of fresh water, shady reprieves, and are wearing proper ID tags at all times. Consider buying your dog his very own kiddie pool for your backyard too… that’s a sure way to make a splash and beat the summer heat!

Seniors in assisted living centers can be especially susceptible to the dangers of low salt diets. In 2013 a task force of 12 professional medical, nursing, and nutritional organizations assembled by the Pioneer Network published the “New Dining Practice Standards.” Their report concluded that low salt diets were contributing to malnutrition and weight loss among a significant percentage of seniors in assisted living facilities.

Low salt diets can also cause seniors to suffer from mild hyponatremia, an electrolyte imbalance in the blood which may not sound bad but can lead directly to walking impairment, attention deficits and a much higher frequency of falls. Several recent medical papers found a direct relationship between hyponatremia and unsteadiness, falls, bone fractures and attention deficits.

Falls are one of the most serious problems for the elderly and about a third of people over 65 fall at least once every year. Fall-related injuries in the elderly are associated with numerous psychological and physical consequences and are a leading cause of bone breakage and hip fractures, which can lead to complications and permanent disability or death.

Some seniors do need a low salt diets but many do not, and it should not be assumed that they all do or benefit from when in fact the opposite may be the case.

Face reality

Life As A Caregiver

Mom has shown numerous changes since we’ve been in Arizona these last four years.

But especially in the last year.

Deteriorating changes.

When we first moved here, she was able to do various activities in spite of her condition: word puzzles, fold laundry, wash the dishes, do a little ironing, and set the table. She really was into the tv shows she liked and laughed out loud at their stories.

But now, there has been what seems to be a consistent decline.

She is getting very hard of hearing which makes things even more challenging. She does none of the above-mentioned activities and her focus in general is short and scattered. She now must be told what to do: like brush her teeth, wash her hands, flush the toilet and what clothes to put on.

And when told to do these things, she must be told several times because she forgets. Because her focus has diminished, she gets lost in the tv programs and becomes oblivious to all that surrounds her.

But what she STILL has is her sense of humor, her ability to laugh at funny things and have interesting conversations. Her

opinions are still strong. And so is her love for Buddy…and me. She tells me how much she loves me all the time.

I think what I miss the most throughout this journey is her inability to remember what is going on in MY life: where I’ve been or what I’ve done, if I’ve been sick, if I’ve met someone new. The things we used to share all the time. That is the hardest part! Holidays really don’t matter to her any longer because one day is just like all the rest… even if there is celebration. She doesn’t remember. And frankly, that breaks my heart! But we celebrate anyway!

Here is a big decision the doctor and I made together. Everyone’s situation is different, of course.

But what he and I both felt was best for mom was to lock her inside her casita when she’s there alone. One of the characteristics of Alzheimer’s is wandering.

Fortunately, mom doesn’t have the tendency to wander. But if she did, that would be a horrible thing to deal with.

There are so many stories about elders with Alzheimer’s walking aimlessly through their neighborhoods (or beyond), often in their pajamas, not knowing where they are, how they got

there or how to get back home.

Some have fallen; some have been attacked. That would probably send me over the edge if something like that happened to my mother.

So the doctor and I felt that locking her inside was for her own safety (and my piece-ofmind)…especially since she sleeps most of the day, doesn’t walk steadily any longer and lives in a stucco building (with little or no chance of fire). It might sound harsh, but she feels safe and isn’t scared that someone might open the door and come in.

The main point to all of this is to know what to expect as a family member battles through Alzheimer’s disease. This is happening to my mother. But, in addition to our elders, it could happen to your husband, your wife, your sister or your brother. Knowing what to do and understanding what you will be faced with in the future can help both your family member AND you! Be prepared….to the best of your ability. Denial is NOT your friend!

As acceptance letters arrive in the mail, another important document is not far behind: financial aid letters.

Not all financial aid letters are the same, so deciphering and comparing them can be confusing.

To help get you started, the experts at College Ave Student Loans share tips and tricks for how to easily understand your financial aid letter.

Keep an eye out for work-study offers: If you indicated an interest during the FAFSA application, your financial aid letter may list approval for a work-study job that provides money toward your studies and fits with your class schedule. Look carefully at symbols and terms: College award letters may use different wording and abbreviations.

For instance, rather than spelling out the word “loan” you could see “L” or “LN”. You might also see “net price” and “net cost.”

Know the difference between gift aid and loans: Gift aid is money that is awarded to qualifying students that isn’t expected to be paid back. Gift aid includes things like scholarships, grants, and housing or tuition waivers.

Not all applicants will qualify for gift aid, but most will be eligible for federal loans. As a general rule, you should expect that you’ll need to pay loans back, usually with interest.

In order to find out what aid you qualify for, you should start by filing your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

After your information is processed, and you’ve applied to the colleges of your choice, you’ll receive financial aid award letters in the mail with the results from each school where you were accepted.

Be aware of the impact of outside scholarships: If a student is awarded a private scholarship, the financial aid letter may list its effect on the amount of money offered by the school or in federal aid because the student’s financial need has already been partially covered. This could impact gift aid, loan amounts, or both.

Think about additional costs: Your financial aid letter may not include all of the costs associated with going to school. Think beyond tuition and make sure you have an idea of what you’ll be spending on housing, food, transportation, books, supplies, additional fees, and other living expenses.

If you find the amount of financial aid provided isn’t enough, families may want to research and explore private student loans as an option to cover the additional expenses. Look for competitive interest rates and flexible repayment options that match your budget.

Finally, if you’re still unclear about the terms and conditions of any college award letter, it’s important to reach out to the school to ask for clarification or discuss your options. You don’t want to leave any money on the table.

Positive Advice It is difficult to pick just one piece of advice as ‘most meaningful’.

However, with the uncertainty in the world, I find that advice that helps me maintain a positive attitude is particularly helpful. I turn to the Bible for my advice.

Jesus’ words offer amazing teaching. His teaching has been adopted into many different cultures and religions. His teaching resonates with people throughout the world.

Jesus said, “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” (Romans 12:12) I appreciate the simplicity of this verse.

Be joyful in hope. The statement alone reminds us that we do have hope. Even things that feel

hopeless, aren’t. Those with faith often experience greater hope. We know we are not alone and that help beyond what we can think or imagine is at work.

Even people without faith hold onto a deep desire to believe that the worst is not permanent.

Things will improve. This simple statement reminds us not to give up. Circumstances and people do change. We can think back to other times when hope has won out and we experience joy in our hope.

Be patient in affliction. It is never fun to go through tough times. We all want them to end as quickly as possible. Holding onto the hope that situations are not permanent, gives us greater patience. We also have the benefit of hindsight. We know that our previous tough times improved.

Practicing patience sure beats grumbling and complaining.

Complaining accomplishes nothing beyond stealing our joy – and the joy of those around us!

Be faithful in prayer. 55% of Americans say they pray every day and 21% say they pray weekly or monthly. 20% of people who claim no religious affiliation say they pray daily. (1014 Pew Research Center survey) Prayer is essential in my life. I believe God truly wants us to bring everything to him in prayer. I’ve found that people facing tough times welcome prayer. It goes back to hope again. People consider that maybe, just maybe, there is something to prayer. Prayer increases our hope, our joy, and helps us to be patient. Prayer launches amazing activity in the heavens on our behalf. Be faithful in prayer and see if you don’t find greater peace.
