From Me To You...

Welcome! to the January edition of Mountain View magazine.

Happy New Year! You had to know it was coming, an editorial about resolutions. It is the time of year after all.

My resolutions are probably much the same as many of yours. In the past I have resolved to eat less and move more. That one is not fun, but it works... over the last year I have lost over 20lbs following that mindset. I fell off the proverbial wagon many times and I did not enjoy most of it, but there is a great satisfaction once the pounds finally start to disappear. I really thought I was doing well in my goal until I renewed my driver’s license recently and discovered that I am still 20lbs heavier than I was when we moved here 13 years ago. Rats.

Another resolution I tried in the past was to eat less chocolate. That was a non starter. I really don’t even know why I suggested it in the first place.

A big one for me was to stop procrastinating.

I am living in the Land of Last Minute Tasks and I am their queen. Putting things off until I have no choice but to finish them is my raison d’etre - or reason to be if you prefer English.

There are always so many other things I would rather do than whatever it is that I have to do.

Part of my problem is the lack of focus that has seemed to follow... Squirrel!!!

Where was I? Ah yes procrastination... I think the only thing I do on time is meet my deadline, producing these magazines every month. I am actually quite proud of my record for hitting my print deadlines for the last almost decade. I do have to admit that if there was not a team of people at the printer waiting for me, that would probably not be achievable.

However I do hate to disappoint others. So thank you Gene for keeping me accountable.

On to this year.

I get to meet many people through this job and I love talking to them and hearing their stories. Some of the people are young and some not so young. From the last group the thing I hear most often is that they wish they had taken better care of their teeth. Sure there is a smattering of regret over the one that got away and the life choices made in error. But mostly it is the teeth.

I am guilty of not going to the dentist on a regular basis. I have had so many fillings and crowns that the last time I complained to my dentist about pain in a tooth he actually said, “That is not your tooth it is a crown, so I don’t think it can be hurting.” Ah. As a parent I am vigilant about the 6 month check ups and cleanings for my kids. I march my children in there telling them it is not an option and that they will thank me one day.

Meanwhile the nagging guilt that I am not following my own advice is thrumming away in the back of my mind. “I am so busy” I tell myself, or “I will make an appointment next time I take the kids.” I have an excuse for every point. But those people I spoke to are right. If I lose my teeth I cant eat chocolate.

Hold on, I have a great point there. Excuse me I have to make a phone call...

Peace On Earth I love tradition when it is something I want to hold onto.

I become annoyed with tradition when I feel it sets unnecessary limits. Do you have these mixed reactions?

New traditions have been introduced in our country through the wonderful diversity of people.

We see this especially in foods.

Consider Russian tea cakes, , the Latino tamales, and Swedish meatballs. These are great additions! Even the preparation for turkey is changing. Have you tried it deep fried?

One Christmas, our son introduced sticky buns and Orange Julius to our Christmas morning. The next year, it was assumed by our children that we would continue this ‘tradition.’

What was a change for us, was instantly tradition for them. And, oh, the grief, the year our then

married daughter came home, and I had not made party mix for New Year’s Eve! There is nothing like marriage to bring about new traditions as two families merge. We had a tradition of alternating holidays between our parents’ homes. You would have thought it was a crisis the year we decided to stay home and establish our own traditions.

We did invite our parents to come to our home! However, to them, it was unwelcome change.

Consider the variety of expressions in our houses of worship. There are differences in music, liturgy, prayers, and the sharing of God’s Word. God’s Word doesn’t change, yet we celebrate it in many different ways. While these changes challenge those who like it “the way it was,” others, who didn’t connect before, now connect. It isn’t necessary for every church to be the same. The variety exists so everyone can find the place

that resonates with their style of worship.

Menu changes, clothing styles, church style, can all have positive or negative effects. The catch is to evaluate, with an open mind, what is really happening.

Some changes have, thankfully, reversed back. Others have been adopted with gratitude.

Perhaps what is more important is to evaluate change by holding it up to our values. Look at expressions of speech as an example. Do we maintain the courtesy and respect when we speak or post in social media?

The world offers both tradition and change. It is our job to discern which to embrace in each circumstance. “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2) Submitted by Valerie Fairchild, pastor of Spirit Song church in Vistancia

On Our Cover Food for Kidz is an international, non-profit organization based in Stewart, MN that is dedicated to feeding hungry children and their families nutritious meals.

To accomplish this lofty and humanitarian goal, Food for Kidz facilitates packing events around the country. The need for food locally and globally remains a constant need and increasing challenge.

Trilogy at Vistancia is entering its 12th year of participation with Food for Kidz. During this period Trilogy residents and community volunteers have raised over $215,000 and packed over 1,400,000 meals. Fifty percent of the meals packed are donated to food banks in the Phoenix area and fifty percent are sent to other areas in distress around the world. This year, parts of the USA, Puerto Rico and Dominica devastated by hurricanes were recipients of meals packed by communities partnering with Food for Kidz.

The Food for Kidz meal is a carefully formulated mixture of nutritionally sustainable ingredients that include protein, rice, soy and vegetables, in addition to essential vitamins and minerals. The meals are parceled in packaging that insures it arrives fresh and ready to prepare with minimal supplies. Once funds are raised, the Trilogy Food for Kidz organization purchases the ingredients, supplies and distribution materials from the International Organization to use on Pack Day. Trilogy has again set an ambitious goal. The 2018 goal is to raise $25,000 and package 150,000 meals! However, this can only be done with generous donations and volunteers. Fundraising events for this year include a golf tournament, March 16, 2018 at the Falcon Dunes Golf Course at Luke Air Force Base; a “Black and White” themed dinner dance on February 9, 2018 at Trilogy at Vistancia;

and a Coin Dump on February 20, 2018 at the Trilogy Kiva Club.

Our fundraising activities make possible our community Pack Day event which will be held this year on March 6, 2018. In addition to hundreds of Trilogy residents who eagerly volunteer to package the meals, we are assisted by the Peoria Fire and Police Departments, city dignitaries, the Trilogy Softball team and the Trilogy Veterans Club.

Living With Faith It was approximately twentyfive hundred years ago that a Prophet of Israel roamed the countryside preaching about the goodness of humanity and how it could be found in each of us.

In fact he emphasized that the most enduring force known to man was the power of our ability to conquer the wrong doing we witness every day.

There are many ways we can accomplish what was suggested so long ago. For example: Supporting institutions that give others the ability to survive and even carry themselves with dignity. Every day we witness the poverty and misery of those less fortunate. And there are those among us who were more independent but somehow woke one day to the progress of time.

It is not enough to acknowledge the problems. We are obligated,

as partners with God, to ensure that the tear in our society is repaired to the best of our ability.

Each tear in the fabric of our existence should bring us closer to understanding our place in the journey we are embarked upon.

Age should not be a deterrent to reaching out to lend a helping hand. Rather it should encourage us to do more because we have been there and have seen the results of indifference. We are nothing without purpose and only when we lift a person who has fallen, can we with pride, declare who we are and truly comprehend the connection of Heaven and Earth.

This time of the year enables us to recollect as well as plan for tomorrow. There is the custom of New Year’s resolutions – a wish list of things yet to be accomplished and with good intentions attached. But it shouldn’t end there. The act of making a wish should be connected to the action necessary to see them completed.

Some will falter and some will see their dreams come true.

God does not expect us to succeed in everything we undertake, but is disappointed when we do not attempt to improve our lives. The special ingredient in any attempt at connection with God and receiving the salvation we all so desperately need is a thing called forgiveness. Forgiveness gives us the ability to heal from wounds that have been inflicted. More importantly, forgiveness is a sign of positive self-esteem.

We forgive, but never forget.

For it is through forgiving that we remain a blessing and it is remembering that should help us refrain from repeating our mistakes.

May all of our New Year’s be fulfilling, and rewarding.

Yum Yum While most families say eating together is a high priority, day-today reality is different. According to a 2013 poll by NPR and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, only half of children in the U.S. are in families that dine together.

Yet research cited by the American Academy of Pediatrics shows that children reap many benefits from regular family meals, from improved academic performance to developing a deeper sense of resilience.

But busy families can find time to sit down together more often, says Colleen Burns, a lifestyle expert. To be successful, set the intention with good planning and smart strategies. What’s more, these meals can also be delicious and nutritious.

“When you have simple solutions in your toolbox to get those well-balanced and tasty meals on the table in the little time that you have, it lets you establish and keep an important family ritual,” says Burns, who is also a busy mom of six boys. “At the same time, you don’t get burned out, and that’s key to staying motivated and inspired.”

To help you get started, Burns shares her top three simple tips to get delicious and nutritious meals on the table quickly.

Shop the freezer section: When you’re in a time pinch, frozen foods have many offerings that set a good foundation for any home-cooked meal, Burns says.

Oftentimes, the quality is just as good as their fresh counterparts, and they eliminate many steps of prep time. On top of all that, fruits and veggies are flashfrozen, which locks the nutrients in place.

Don’t sacrifice: If you know what to look for when shopping the grocery aisles, you can find convenient entrees and sides without sacrificing taste or quality.

Maintain balance: Look to a variety of entrees and sides to bring a nutritional balance as well as delicious flavors to your dinner menu. Marinated Garlic and Lemon Roasted Chicken Drumsticks with Honey Mustard Sauce 10 chicken drumsticks 1 large lemon zested and juiced 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 3 whole cloves garlic, chopped 1 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon oregano 1 pinch each salt and pepper Minced parsley for garnish Honey Mustard Sauce: 3 tablespoons melted butter 1/2 cup honey 1/2 cup mustard 1 tablespoon lemon juice Directions • In a bowl, mix together lemon juice, zest, olive oil, chopped garlic, paprika, oregano, salt and pepper.

• Add chicken drumsticks and toss to coat evenly. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and place in refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.

• When ready to cook, let chicken come to room temperature for about 20 minutes.

• Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

• Arrange chicken on oiled foillined sheet pan.

• Bake uncovered for 20 minutes. Flip chicken pieces and cook another 10 minutes until chicken reaches 165 degrees and is no longer pink.

• Make sauce in a small bowl by whisking together the mustard and honey.

• Add water as needed for a workable consistency.

• With a small pastry brush, brush auce over chicken and broil 5 minutes until bubbly.

• Place chicken pieces on a serving platter and sprinkle minced parsley over all.

Always Be Prepared

It’s only a matter of time now.

Your little bundle of joy is on its way, and for the first time you are about to be a parent.

4. Get support With the demands of school and work, now is an appropriate time to seek help from family and friends. Beyond that, consider informing your employer about your college courses and your goals. If your degree is relevant to other work at the company, you might discover they are willing to help.

Keep it in balance When life gets this hectic, especially when it’s consumed with family, work and school, it’s easy to burn the candle at both ends, leaving you feeling overextended and burned out. Drivers’ re-education on flat-tire fixing For many Americans, fixing a flat remains a mystery. According to a survey from AAA, nearly 20 percent of U.S. drivers don’t know how to change a flat tire.

This is compounded by research saying there are 220 million flat tires annually - and each driver will experience up to five flat tires in their lifetime.

Before hitting the road, study up on these flat-tire-fixing hacks and build up the confidence to complete this all-American road test: Be spared: Knowing how to change a flat is all for naught if a spare tire is not along for the ride. Spares are usually hidden under the carpet in the trunk area, but they aren’t always included in newer vehicles (allowing manufacturers to make lighter, more fuel-efficient vehicles). When purchasing a new vehicle, ask the dealer about the inclusion of a spare.

Flatlining signs: It’s fairly easy to spot a flat tire - it’s usually accompanied by a loud noise or rubber flapping. The vehicle will feel like it is being pulled toward the side of the flat tire, and it will feel as if the vehicle can no longer accelerate. When in doubt, activate hazard lights and move the vehicle safely out of traffic, ideally on a flat area with enough space on the side of the road.

Once in a safe spot, remember to practice high visibility: Wear a reflective vest and position reflective emergency warning triangles to alert motorists - both of these items should be added to your roadside toolkit.

Hit the road, Jack: Having the right tools on board is critical, of course, and that’s where a jack comes in. A Strongway Jack from Northern Tool + Equipment is a compact, strong and reliable partner in replacing the bum tire and raising up the vehicle.

Remember, the jack is only used to get the vehicle off the ground, not to hold the vehicle in place - that’s where the jack stands come in to ensure a safe

and sustained lift. Refer to the owner’s manual for the proper placement of the jack and the stands, which is typically the sturdiest part of the vehicle.

Rider’s block: A common, and dangerous, error when changing a tire is not using blocks to prevent the wheels from rolling once the vehicle is raised. A tirechanging tool pack should include bricks or wooden wedges to be placed behind the wheels at the end of the vehicle that isn’t being raised.

Get loose: Once the jack has been cranked up, and the wheel is slightly off the ground, it’s time to remove the hubcap and then call for another key tool, a tire iron, to loosen the lug nuts and then pull off the flat tire. Be careful not to strip the lug nuts.

On the road again: With the flat tire off, line up the spare tire’s holes with the wheel bolts and push on, hand-screwing the lug nuts back on. Then, lower the jack a touch so the wheel is in slight contact with the ground.

Use the tire iron to further secure the lug nuts in a “starlike” pattern: After tightening the first lug nut, tighten the one that is diagonally across from it and continue in that pattern. This will prevent the wheel from wobbling.

In an age of mobile phones and easy connection to roadside assistance, the knowledge of addressing a flat tire has gone out the window or the sunroof. But, motorists should know - and practice the basics of changing a flat to ensure they are prepared for the dreaded pop.

Nuts!

For the roughly 75 million Americans who make up the baby boom generation, a healthy diet and lifestyle are the best weapons against age-related diseases.

“It’s vital at any age to adopt good habits to live a strong, fit and healthy life,” says Dr. Mike Roussell, a nationally recognized nutrition consultant and nutrition adviser to Men’s Health and Shape. “Fueling your life with tasty and nutrient-rich foods while making sure to be active every single day are essential components to keeping your body young and vibrant.” Roussell’s recommendation? Nuts. In particular, pistachios.

Large population studies show that people who regularly eat nuts have a lower risk of dying from heart disease or suffering a heart attack. Pistachios provide 360-degree cardiovascular

support in that they can promote improvements in cholesterol levels, blood pressure and blood vessel function.

Ecessive inflammation is one of the root causes of age-related conditions, such as arthritis.

Pistachios contain a special form of vitamin E called gamma tocopherol, which has unique anti-inflammatory properties.

Gamma tocopherol levels have also been shown to decrease as we age.

Being overweight can also contribute to a number of agerelated illnesses. Studies show pistachios positively promote weight maintenance as the dietary fiber, fat and protein all work together to make us feel fuller and satiated longer, plus removing them from the shell slows down eating.

The fiber in pistachios also can help with digestion.

Research shows that the fiber in pistachios works as a prebiotic and feeds the good bacteria in our digestive tract to improve the health of our digestive system.

Developing adult onset diabetes, or Type 2 diabetes, is a common fear for boomers. Nuts improve how the body’s cells use glucose and how insulin responds to a carbohydrate-containing meal, namely, stabilizing blood glucose levels.

Pistachios contain lutein, a nutrient known to help improve eye health, especially in older individuals. Lutein has been shown to prevent and slow down macular degeneration by providing more pigment for the eye, thereby reflecting more of the sun’s light, preventing damage to the retina.

Nuts, including pistachios, are rich in minerals such as magnesium. One benefit of magnesium is that it may aid sleep because it assists in helping the muscles relax and quiet activity in the brain by working as an inhibitory neurotransmitter.

Pistachios have been shown to promote energy, which is why so many professional athletes consume them while training.

More energy means we’ll commit to getting enough exercise.

But what is Dr. Mike’s main reason for having his clients eat pistachios? “They taste good.

Furry Friends

From their loyal ways to their silly antics, pets bring so much joy to homes. While you wouldn’t trade any of the cuddles and welcomehome slobbers, one thing most pet owners don’t find quite as lovable is all the pet hair!

When you live with a furry friend, it’s inevitable that there will be pet hair everywhere-hiding under tables, collecting in corners and clinging to clothes and furniture.

Cleaning up after it all can be hard work-but the good news is that there are some ways to keep it under control. With a few simple steps, you can keep your home clean and free from pet hair (at least until that next shake).

1) Embrace your inner groomer.

The best way to deal with pet hair in your home is to stop it even before it starts. Regularly grooming your pet will help control pet hair and shedding.

Get into the habit of brushing your pet each day. Chances are, they’ll enjoy the extra attention, and you’ll be able to collect and dispose of their hair before it gets everywhere else. If your pet needs extra care, take them to a groomer every couple of months to really control the undercoat or longer hair.

Positive Parenting

If you’re a parent with a smartphone or tablet, it didn’t take long before your little one first reached for your shiny device. If only their fingers weren’t covered in slobber at the time, you may have been more willing to hand it over. The good news is that saliva is easy to wipe off! S’mores? Not so much.

To your surprise - and theirs learning how to swipe and tap objects to make them move on the screen came quickly and naturally. Oftentimes the challenge soon becomes how to keep their hands off the device.

It’s perfectly acceptable, even beneficial, for young children to have these interactions with technology ... but only with appropriate parental guidance.

Young children can strengthen their interactions with other family members, as well as improve their familiarity with sounds, words, language and the world around them, through the responsible use of technology.

Most experts agree, however,

that children under the age of 2 probably shouldn’t trade their rattles in for tablets. There are enough real-world interactions to keep them busy, and whether they play with blocks or pull the cat’s tail, these tangible experiences are important to their development.

Once beyond the 24-month mark, you can begin introducing technology to your little tyke.

Chances are he or she may already enjoy the privilege at preschool; many toddler daycare centers and preschools now incorporate technology, from computers to tablets, into their curriculum.

Whether at school or at home, most youngsters interact with screens before they turn 5.

According to a survey conducted by the Joan Ganz Cooney Center, more than eight in 10 children from age 2 to 10 use digital media every week. In fact, twothirds have tablets or e-readers.

While the interactions are practically inevitable, significant parental and caregiver involvement can help steer them in the right direction, ensuring kids are exposed to content providing the best opportunities for learning.

Between laptop computers, desktop PCs, tablets, televisions and smartphones, there’s probably a screen in

Although these screens can and often do serve as virtual babysitters, games, apps and other content should be carefully selected, and screen time should be limited to an hour or less a day for toddlers.

Something as simple and fun as taking turns in a game or reading together on a tablet can also help ensure technology is being consumed in a responsible way that can educate and aid development.

Checking the ESRB age and content rating information in console and online stores is a great way to find appropriate games for kids of all ages. As your little ones mature from toddlers to tweens, their use of technology as well as the technology itself will certainly evolve. The breadth of content they enjoy will greatly expand, highlighting the importance of parental involvement in managing and monitoring their time with tech. Regardless of where our smartphones and tablets take us, parental involvement and engagement is key to ensuring kids enjoy a healthy, responsible relationship with technology.

Life As A Caregiver Imagine if you yourself had a disease or condition that was terminal for which there was no cure. And, you were of the age that hindered you from understanding or remembering what it was that was wrong with you. That is often the scenario for an Alzheimer’s patient.

~ Ice cream. Mom loves ice cream, so as an after dinner treat, I will give her some ice cream once in a while. The smile on her face says it all. She won’t remember she had it ten minutes later, but for that moment she is happy and enjoying every mouthful.

In my mother’s case, which is not unlike many, she has other issues. Hers is chronic head pain.

Not migraines, but headaches every single day of which not one doctor has been able to determine their cause. The head pain is what keeps her in bed most of the day. The head pain is what robs her of a busy and happy life. And it’s the head pain that causes her be to depressed.

She has had head pain every day of her life since her mid-20’s.

That is cause for depression.

~ Music. Mom loved music and always went around the house singing. So frequently I will play music on the cable music channel and she sings or hums right along. Again, the smile on her face says it all. It’s always amazing to me that with music, it is an instant recall.

Everyone gets depressed from time to time. But as it applied to me, there had always been something or someone to snap me out of it. Some special event to look forward to; some special person who did something nice and put a smile on my face.

But when a person suffers from chronic pain or Alzheimer’s or any other terminal disease, there isn’t much that can make them snap out of it because the disease or condition is with them constantly.

I have found that living ‘in the moment’ is what is important.

The only thing Alzheimer’s patients HAVE is ‘in the moment’.

So….it is important to find the things that make them happy in that moment. Right now. This very minute. Instant gratification.

Some of the things that have worked for us are as follows:

~ Fast-moving sports on tv (like the Olympics, football, basketball….even baseball, if it’s the SF Giants). She enjoys watching her favorites and can follow along since the games move quickly. ~ Wheel of Fortune. She enjoys trying to guess the puzzles…and is still pretty good at it. ~ Looking at old family photos and her high school yearbooks.

They bring smiles to her face.

Once you have established a few things that they can still enjoy, you can make them part of your routine. My mom won’t truly remember eating the ice cream or listening to the music or watching the games or playing Wheel of Fortune or looking at the photos….but she knows what they are and knows they make her happy.

But what about MY depression?

The caregiver is often left with depression of a different sort. We KNOW what is happening to our loved one. And we KNOW that we can’t fix it to the degree we want.

We continue to work hard to keep them comfortable and as happy as possible. But when the lights go out at night and we’re alone with our thoughts, we KNOW what is coming. We just don’t know WHEN. What about THAT kind of depression?

For me, I try and face reality.

I try and tell myself that I am doing the best I can with the resources I have. And I tell myself that my mom knows I am taking good care of her. That does give me a bit of comfort.

But I also find that I need to focus on ME, as well.

The best way for me to do that has been to surround myself with people I can talk with. They aren’t experts in Alzheimer’s disease or skilled therapists.

They are friends who simply care about me and let me share my thoughts.

I try and stay active with projects and people that make me happy, I work-out to keep my mind and body healthy and to relieve stress, and I have come to enjoy the quiet. Taking the time to prepare my thoughts for what is coming. And….my doctor has given me a very, very mild antidepressant that has worked wonders.

Depression is a horrible thing.

But, if we’re smart about it and do what we can to keep it at bay, we can move forward in spite of it. That is my goal for both my mom AND myself.

For many of us, this is the best time of the year to spend with friends, family and lots of food.

The weather has turned colder and we’re ready to invite guests over to eat, laugh and make new memories for the new year.

Let’s face it, because you spend more time indoors this time of year, you’re also probably a bit more anxious when it comes to keeping the house tidy and making sure you’re keeping yourself and your guests healthy.

So, what’s the best approach to cleaning up before your gettogether starts? You’ve likely heard this before, but it’s true: Clean only what your guests see.

There’s no need to push all your furniture into the middle of the room to clean your baseboards or grab those dust bunnies from underneath the china cabinet.

Of course, you want the guest bathroom to be shipshape, as well as a few of the following areas, before guests arrive.

Entertaining Tips Most people like to mingle in the kitchen (hello bacon-wrapped dates!), so you want it to smell like all your wonderful food, not harsh chemicals. While you might be tempted to clean every inch of the kitchen, keep it simple and remember to clean as you go, especially during food prep. From raw cookie dough to chicken wings, you want to be careful not to cross-contaminate surfaces, so disinfect and clean those food-prep areas often, including cutting boards.Don’t let those dirty mixing bowls pile up, either.

Rinse as soon as you can and load them into the dishwasher.

After the kitchen, you probably know where your guests will gravitate. Maybe the kids hit the rec room and sports fans huddle in the family room around the TV. Vacuuming and dusting are a must, and put away all the nonessential items. Place anything you don’t need into your laundry basket and stash it in the laundry room.

Now think about all those hands touching surfaces like doorknobs, remotes, toys or playpens, especially if you have little ones crawling about or you’re expecting lots of toddlers. No one wants to be sick, especially when there is fun to be had. To prevent the spread of germs, disinfect those often-touched items and surfaces.

Runny noses: For every hostess gift or side dish people bring, you should also expect some sniffles and sneezes. Keep your guests comfortable by putting out some boxes of tissues and an alcoholbased hand sanitizer in key areas, like near the buffet line and next to the tissue box.

A little elbow grease and some targeted cleaning should leave you plenty of time for the really important stuff: cooking, eating and enjoying time with your loved ones.

First Person From cancer nurse to cancer patient: One woman’s story

Throughout her career, Lindsay Norris had a close connection with cancer, helping others battle the disease. Then one day, it became even more personal.

The 33-year-old oncology nurse still remembers the moment she heard the news of her own diagnosis - Stage 3 colorectal cancer. “I’ve been in those conversations so many times,” she said. “I’ve shared a plan of care so many times. I’ve explained this stuff so many times.” Lindsay knew the cancer journey but now she was the one on the receiving end of the conversation.

While the magnitude of a cancer diagnosis cannot be denied, a Pfizer-sponsored survey of over 1,500 cancer patients and caregivers to assess resources, tools and general perceptions of cancer shows nearly 85 percent of the patients surveyed have a positive outlook on cancer and 83 percent have been inspired to make positive changes in their life following their diagnosis.

In fact, nearly 90 percent of patients surveyed believe cancer has forced them to prioritize important things in their life and 3 in 5 patients surveyed said cancer allowed them to discover the “real me.” That said, day-to-day life with cancer is challenging and the same survey shows a majority of those patients and caregivers surveyed say it would be helpful to have an all-in-one mobile tool or app while managing life with cancer, stating some of the most helpful resources would be the ability to keep track of questions that come up during the day and during medical appointments, keeping track of medications and being

able to communicate with loved ones. Pfizer recently launched LivingWith(TM), a free mobile app to help patients and their loved ones manage life with cancer and organize certain important information in one place, which may help to address some of these tasks and communication challenges.

While Lindsay has adjusted some things in her life since her diagnosis, her commitment to her work as a nurse has remained steadfast and each day she comes to the hospital as both patient and professional.

“I figured I have to come every day for treatment anyway, so I might as well work,” she said of juggling care for her patients with her own treatment schedule. “I’ve always taken pride in my job and taking care of my patients. I have always tried to put others before myself.”

Of course, like most people with cancer, Lindsay, a mother of two young children, has her good days and her bad days. On her good days she can go without taking a nap and is able to make dinner for the family and enjoy bath time. But on her bad days, she simply can’t enjoy these activities and that’s when her husband steps in to help. The missed opportunities sadden her, but she understands these struggles are part of living with cancer and refuses to let them define her.

She still remembers breaking the news of her diagnosis to her family and her 3 year old son Harrison referring to the disease as mom’s “cancer owie.”

He said to me, “Mom, after your cancer owies are all gone and you’re done taking your special medicine, you can have a sleepover in my boys only fort.”

Lindsay keeps this goal in mind, and while her battle with cancer is far from over, she’ll have her sleepover in that fort.
