From Me To You... I pulled a crumpled lottery ticket from the bottom of my purse the other day and thought to myself, “I really should have won this by now.”

I have been plunking down $10 or so a week for the last quarter of a century and have very little to show for it. I follow all the rules, buying a ticket for all the big jackpots, I am ‘in it to win it’. And yet, no money. I take that back. There was that one time when we got 5 numbers. You would think that would get at least a few thousand dollars. Sadly our big payout was a mere $121. I know that if I had taken that $10 a week and deposited it at a rate of 5% I would have saved around $40,000. That is using my remedial math skills so I could be off by a few thousand. In fact the more I try to do the math the bigger my headache is getting. So if anyone out there wants to figure it out and let me know, go ahead. However you look at it, that is a big chunk of change. So why do I do it? Well for me it is not really about the payout. Sure the money would be wonderful, but I am not crazy enough to believe I would actually win. No, what I get out of this game is a dream. For the whole 3 or 4 days between buying the ticket and finding out that I am yet again not a millionaire, I have a world of wonderful possibilities. I could fund my kids college anywhere they wanted to go, pay off their debts, pay off my debts, buy everyone a car, travel, travel some more, and live a life of freedom from the day to day drudgery. I would, of course, also save a large percentage so I would not join the ranks of lottery winning bankruptees. That ending is not part of my dream.

So for a while my life is bright and shiny. Then I come back down to earth, turn on my computer and get back to work. I glance around my office and see pictures of my children graduating from college. My daughter’s wedding photo and information for my son’s wedding later this year. I see my dog curled up at my feet, legs twitching as he chases rabbits in his sleep. I remember that I need to take my son to football practice and plan for a date night with my husband. I have a pretty wonderful life right now. The thing we need to remember is that while it is wonderful to dream and build castles in the sky, there is a real world right here in front of us. It can be bright and shiny too. I have great kids who are growing and achieving their goals, a husband who loves me and is always by my side, a roof over my head and clothes on my back. Not to mention a devoted, smelly dog. Not too shabby. What playing the lottery actually does for me is make me appreciate all the wonderful things that exist in my life right now. My advice to you is to keep your eyes open and follow your dreams for sure, but it doesn’t hurt to buy a ticket occasionally. Someone’s got to win it, right?

On Our Cover

Pickleball is the fastest growing sport nationwide. Here in Verrado we are a perfect example of how popular the game is. We have over ninety members in our club, which is the largest membership of all Verrado clubs. The Verrado Pickleball Club was started in the last decade with just a few members. But it is growing rapidly! Since we are playing at just two temporary courts behind the Center on Main, the club has worked hard to give everyone court time by spreading out the playing time. This year, a small number of beginners were allowed to join the club while spreading out the playing time of all the members. The club plays year round, except for August. DMB arrangements with the Litchfield Elementary School District allows for indoor play at the

6 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

Verrado Middle School in June and July. During these two months, a number of our neighbors from the Victory club come and join us to play inside. Players come to the sport usually with other “racquet experience (having played tennis, racquetball or ping pong), but that experience is not required. Club members talk about how the sport is taught and played in schools throughout the country. The Verrado club has 3 levels of play, which allows players to comfortably learn and play the sport as their skill level increases. Sportsmanship and fun are key attributes of the Verrado Pickleball club. Social banter on and off the court has led to many people walking past wanting to know more about the sport because it looks like fun, and noting that the players are obviously having fun. Home Sweet Home What the Heck is a HECM?

A Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) for Purchase is a federally insured program that allows you to purchase a home with a one-time payment of approximately 45% to 60% cash down. Unlike a traditional mortgage, monthly principal and interest payments are optional. This gives you greater flexibility and control over your finances. You own the home as long as you live in it, and the loan does not have to be repaid until you move out, sell the home, or pass away, as long as you meet your loan obligations, which means keeping current with property taxes, insurance and maintenance. If the reverse mortgage borrower in the home dies or leaves the home, the non-borrowing spouse can remain in the home without making monthly mortgage payments on the home. While repayment of the loan is not required, it is allowed. After closing you can make payments toward the loan if you desire, at the pace you desire, providing flexibility and protection against cash flow fluctuations.

Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

You may choose to not repay at all as well. In this scenario, the debt would compound over time and be paid when you move out, sell the home, or pass away. The HECM program is a non-recourse debt, so the debt owed upon sale or death is guaranteed by the FHA to not exceed the home value. In the worst case, there would be no equity remaining at the sale of the home or the death of the homeowner(s). With HECM for Purchase, you typically build less equity than you would with a traditional mortgage. But, unlike a traditional mortgage, as the borrower you’re never at risk of owing more than the home is worth. And, the flexible repayment feature gives you greater financial control. Please note that we are not mortgage advisers or financial advisers. As such, we are not qualified to provide advice concerning how best to finance a home purchase. Our purpose in providing this information is simply to alert you to a possibility you may not otherwise have considered. Submitted by Chuck Disney, of Disney Premier Properties

The Doctor Is In Reading about the suicides of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain might surprise many because of the stereo-types associated with suicide such as social isolation, financial problems, or a relationship crisis. The truth is these suicides occurred because the U.S. is experiencing an epidemic of chronic depression. Without depression or other psychiatric problems suicide does not occur. Some experts have chosen to view the depression epidemic as simply the “over-prescription of medications”. Data suggests the use of anti-depressants is more than a “trend”, it is an avalanche.

Between 2011 and 2014, approximately one in nine Americans of all ages reported taking at least one antidepressant medication. Three decades ago, less than one in fifty did. Now nearly 19% of adults 65 years and older regularly take an anti-depressant. In regard to suicide, half of U.S. states saw at least a 30% increase in suicide rates between 1999 and 2016. We are beginning to understand that chronic depression is due to a chronic inflammatory COVER AD

state called inflammaging. As we age, there is a rising level of chemicals called cytokines being released from white blood cells. These chemicals prevent the brain from recovering from the emotion traumas and result in depression which is often chronic. Chronic inflammation leads to chronic depression and sets the stage for suicide when the individual experiences a crisis. Fortunately, many of the causes of inflammaging are understood and inflammation is greatly influenced by our foods. Common and reversible causes of inflammation include dietary vegetable oils (soy, corn, safflower, sunflower oils, margarine and shortening), a deficient intake of omega-3 from fish, excess AGEs consumption from foods cooked at high temperatures, and intestinal bacterial imbalance called SIBO. Supplementing with COOC-certified extra virgin olive oil, high-quality fish oil, cooking foods at lower temperatures (crock pot, not grill), and supplementing with intestinal-friendly inulin fiber has been shown to reduce inflammation and even reverse chronic depression. © 2018. Life As A Caregiver

It has been six months since I placed my mother in a group home care facility for Alzheimer’s patients. The care she receives there is very good. She always looks clean, she is well-fed, and they make her as comfortable as possible. But I am losing her.

I used to visit her about every other day. Now it is once-a-week. The reason for that is it makes me sad to see her there….even on a good day. By a “good day”, I mean, a day that she knows it’s me; a day that we have a small amount of conversation. But, mom is in a place where she is unable to retain an attention-span or care much about the things around her. When she knows it’s me, I suspect she knows I’m someone special, but I doubt that she truly knows I’m her daughter. About a month ago, Hospice contacted me after talking with mom’s care staff. Their call scared me at first because I only knew Hospice as providing end-of-life care. However, I learned that they offer specialized care services, an extra step to stabilize mom and keep her as healthy as possible. Such services are covered under Medicare and include a nurse who comes everyother-day to check her vitals and administer any meds she may need, a social worker to make sure she’s being cared-for properly by the group home, and a spiritual advisor who will pray with her should she want that. The nurse calls me once-a-week to keep me updated on her condition and to offer me any suggestions.

Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

The woman I see laying in the bed or reclined in the family room chair each time I come to visit isn’t the woman I once knew. She is alive, but not living. She is fading and moving through the last stages of this horrible disease. And all I can do is watch. And pray (to whomever represents my spiritual strength) to take her and give her the peace she deserves. That is my preparation for the inevitable that is coming soon. The take-away here is that there ARE people and organizations around who can help with this inevitability. It is NOT in our best interest to hide our heads in the sand, no matter how much we’d like to. Hospice is a Heaven-sent. Use them. Let them help you and your loved one as they are helping my mom and me. Believe me, it is the best thing you can do…and one of the only things!! Submitted by Kathy Linton, West Valley Resident

Furry Friends July brings family fun, refreshing pool parties, backyard BBQs, and the chimes of the ice-cream truck making its way up and down the tree-lined streets of Verrado. July also brings firework-colorful, sparkly and awe-inspiring, yet quite frightening for sensitive canine ears. More pets run away on the Fourth of July than any other day. If you must bring your pets to any fireworks, make sure they are leashed or in a carrier so that they do not run off. Please make sure that they are wearing proper up-to-date identification tags and are micro-chipped with your current information as well. Are you aware of the Facebook page for Verrado Kennel Club? VKC is Verrado resident community group, although anyone who is a dog lover is welcome to join. This is a place to share information, heart-warming stories, photos, and notifications of found or lost dogs within the Verrado Community. This is a separate Facebook page from our Community Paws, nonprofit rescue page. There is an area within the VKC page that you can upload a photo of your dog and contact info. This ensures that, if your

Click under “Photos”, then “Albums”, and finally “Verrado Dogs.” At the top right corner, you will notice a tab that reads “Add Photos.” You can easily upload your favorite photo of your pup(s) here. Once added, please include some information, such as your pet’s name, your contact info, and any details that would be good to know such as medications, fears, allergies, etc. Please do not post in the comment section, as photos posted there are not as readily visible as the actual photo album. Attention Units wisely will allow you to go further, faster and easier through lif.

Each day there are countless people and activities trying to get our time and attention. Let’s add into the daily mix: school, friends, family, after school activities, studying, relationships, your mental “to do” list and bouts of drama with friends. All are constantly seeking to capture their share of our “attention units.” All of a sudden we are on overload. Sound familiar? Oops, I almost forgot…what about all those things you haven’t finished. You know, that person you said you’d call or text right back and you’ve forgotten. Work or school projects you have to finish or have put-off due to lack of time or urgency. The Basics: 1. An attention unit is what is grabbing your focus from one moment to the next. It’s like what is on your radar screen of life for today. 2. You only have so many attention units each day. 3. Rumors and gossip, worrying and putting things off – are all wasted attention units which causes frustration and stress. 4. Creating the habit of investing your

Bambinos Bilingual Montessori

How do I create the habit of investing attention units wisely? Getting organized is the most effective habit to begin with. Here are some quick tips that will help you be successful: 1. Develop systems to keep organized. A system is the habit of always doing the same thing the same way. Always put your books in the same place. This will reduce stress and help make your success inevitable. 2. Plan tomorrow the night before. Know what you are going to wear the night before. Know what you have to do tomorrow. What commitments do you have? Review tomorrow in your mind just before you fall asleep and see yourself being successful in everything you do. 3. Develop the habit of using a daily planner. Most schools have Agendas for each student. Learn to use this great tool or use a phone app for scheduling. Learning to use this tool effectively frees up so many attention units that it’s unreal.

4. Develop the habit of writing down assignments and always taking notes. Add commitments you make to others and yourself. Always know where your agenda is and keep it with you. Preschool

Create a daily checklist to make these habits a part of your life. Before long you will notice your attention units are now focused on your dreams and direction in life. It takes 30 consecutive days of doing something before it becomes a part of your unconscious habit pattern. (The key word is consecutive.)

Hello neighbors its July and its time for some rain, and maybe a Haboob. Here a few things to think about during our monsoon season. With an increase in relative humidity we will see more insect activity, like termites, mosquitoes, bees, ants, roaches, and a whole lot of other bugs. Its common after a heavy rain to find the occasional bug in your house as they too are trying to get out of the rain. Termite activity generally picks up during periods of higher than normal humidity, and we can see termite swarms during this time too. This is also the time when the Sonoran Desert Scorpions are more active, the larger ones, 3-6 inches in length are very active through the end of September.

high winds and very heavy rain, these storms can be dangerous if you’re caught out in them. Watch out for flash flooding and stay out of low water areas. Never drive through flowing water on the road. You can mitigate damage to your trees by making sure that they are trimmed and maintained. Make sure your patio umbrellas are contained and your patio furniture is secure as these items can be carried away by a strong wind. Several years ago, after a storm there was a trampoline on the side of the flag hill. Imagine a trampoline flying halfway up a mountainside. Haboob, stay inside, avoid being outside during a dust storm as much as possible. Valley Fever can become airborne during a dust storm, and you don’t want to get it. If you are driving and the visibility decreases pull off the road and turn off all lights, and don’t use your hazard lights either. Wait for the conditions to improve and continue your trip. Small bugs like earwigs and sow bugs that live in the ground along your foundation will also attempt to get in your home during or after a good rain. Keep an eye on the weather as we can get some

Money Matters We’re getting close to the Fourth of July. This celebration may get you thinking of the many freedoms you enjoy. But have you thought of what you might need to do to attain financial freedom? . For many people, it means being able to retire when they want to, and to enjoy a comfortable retirement lifestyle. So, if this is your vision as well, consider taking these steps: Pay yourself first. This actually is not that hard to do, especially if you have a 401(k), because your contributions are taken directly from your paycheck, before you even have the chance to spend the money. You can set up a similar arrangement with an IRA by having automatic contributions taken directly from your checking or savings account. Invest appropriately. Your investment decisions should be guided by your time horizon, risk tolerance and retirement goals. If you deviate from these guideposts you may end up making decisions that aren’t right for you and that may set you back as you pursue your financial

independence.

Avoid financial “potholes.” One such pothole is debt. It’s not always easy, but do the best you can to live within your means. A second pothole comes in the form of unexpected short-term costs, such as a major home or auto repair or a medical bill not fully covered by insurance. To avoid dipping into your long-term investments to pay for these short-term costs, try to build an emergency fund containing six months’ to a year’s worth of living expenses. Give yourself some wiggle room. If you decide that to achieve financial independence, you must retire at 62 you may feel disappointed if you fall short of this goal. But if you’re prepared to accept some flexibility – perhaps you can work until 65 – you may be able to earn a different, but still acceptable, financial freedom. When you eventually reach your own “Financial Independence Day,” it may not warrant a fireworks display – but it should certainly add some sparkle to your life.
