This brings me back to the cart situation. Do the right thing, people. Even if no-one is watching you.
TV show I am sure many of you have seen or at least heard of called “What would you do?” In this show people are tested in fabricated situations to see their reaction when they think no-one is watching. Many of these situations involve stepping up when people are being harassed or bullied and yes, we should all put a stop to that kind of behavior. My issue with this is that nowadays it can be dangerous to react in the way you would want to. I have told my daughters, in particular, not to intervene if their safety could be at risk. But it should not be that way. People should always do the right thing, even if they don’t get kudos or acknowledgement. People should also not harass or bully others too, let’s be honest here.

This is one place where there are no laws or even rules to guide you. Sure you can leave it where it is, or you can do the right thing, even if no-one is looking. In my opinion the measure of a man (or woman) can be taken by observing what they do with a shopping cart.
I don’t mean inside the store, although I will judge you harshly if you allow your child to ram it into my ankles. Nope, I mean outside the store, in the parking lot. Once you get all your chocolate chip muffins, cheese balls and lactose free milk into the car and you have an empty cart, what do you do? Do you leave it where it lands? Do you push it onto a curb so it doesn’t roll away? Do you put it carefully between the parked cars next to you? Or do you take it to the cart stand, ready to be rolled back to the store?

Please take what you learn and use it to go further, faster, and easier through life. Once we make the decision to take responsibility for our lives, we understand we can control our thinking and develop habits that assist us in winning the inner game. Henry Ford said it best, “Think you can or think you can’t; either way, you will be right.” Make this your mindset for life, and you will possess a belief that will instill confidence. You will also realize you now have the 1st Key of Success – right thinking. What quote motivates you the most?
Tony Robbins say, “Success leaves clues.” My realization – there is no need to reinvent the wheel. Learn from the masters.

Next month we will learn about the 2nd Key of Success. Until then, focus on your thought habits, as it is the foundation for the 1st Key of Success –The Key of Thinking.
We all have what we call the inner game, or Thought Habits, habitual ways of thinking. They allow us to either talk ourselves into or out of opportunities daily. Thought Habits also impact whether one’s thinking is positive or negative. Quotes are one of many ways people use to keep their thoughts positive. We are aspirational by nature, and quotes can help us see something in ourselves we want to change or serve as a reminder about who we want to become. For example, a quote by W. Clement Stone became an important belief and driving force in my life. “To every disadvantage, there is a corresponding advantage. Find it!.” Maybe I saw the “find it” as more of a challenge. No matter why I am grateful that his quote has become an important part of my life. Imagine developing the thought habit of finding solutions to problems rather than being stuck in the Whenproblem.Iheard

• Shrink family-size recipes into personal-size versions. Children will feel special having their very own bite-size pizza.
• Encourage your child to play with their food! They can build a mountain out of their mashed potatoes or a veggie train out of their peas and carrots, and then have fun eating them up! You can also help your picky eater by keeping meal and snack times consistent. If your children eat a snack at the same time every day, they will also get used to being hungry for dinner around the same time every day. Cook a variety of foods regularly so your children become accustomed to seeing new foods and trying them out will become a routine. Finally, be a role model. Your children will be more enticed to try new foods if they see you doing it.
• Make a face! Use fruit and veggies to spruce up a boring sandwich with eyes, ears and a •mouth.Letyour child help you prepare the meal. If they have a hand in making it, they’ll be more inspired to taste it.
• Try turning everyday foods into shapes and animals, such as slicing a bagel and arranging it on a plate to look like a slithering snake or using cookie cutters to cut sandwiches into hearts, stars or dinosaurs.

Your employee benefits package can be a valuable part of your overall financial strategy. So, as open enrollment season proceeds, take a close look at what you already have, what’s being offered, and what changes you need to make. It will be time well spent.
Your next benefit to consider: Life insurance. Your employer may offer a group life insurance plan, but you’ll want to evaluate whether it’s sufficient for your needs. You’ll also want to closely look at your 401(k) or similar retirement plan. Typically, you can make changes to your 401(k) throughout the year, but it’s important to make sure your investment selections and contribution amounts are still aligned with your risk tolerance and goals. Also, are you contributing enough to earn your employer’s match, if one is offered?

Once again, it’s the season for football games and back-to-school activities. And if you work for a medium-size or large employer, it will soon be the time of year when you can review your employee benefits and make changes as needed. What areas should you focus on?
Submitted by Wayne Polk, AAMS, Financial Advisor, of Edward Jones, Verrado resident
You may want to start with your health insurance. If you’re satisfied with your coverage, and it’s essentially the same as it’s been, you may well want to stick with what you have. However, many employers are increasingly offering highdeductible health plans, which, as the name suggests, could entail more out-of-pocket costs for you. But high-deductible plans may also offer something of benefit: the ability to contribute to a health savings account (HSA). Your HSA contributions are made with pre-tax dollars, so they can reduce your taxable income for the year.

sightings as we have this year, along with racoons, cottontails, quail, and coyotes. That really shows that we have a healthy ecosystem. With our monsoon comes an increase in insect activity. Many of our local insects are herbivores, and with the increase in plant life due to the higher rainfall, there is an abundance of leafy green plants which has a direct effect on the explosion of the bug population. This will lead to a parallel increase in bugs that eat bugs, scorpions, ants, and spiders. It is also time for the big desert hairy scorpions to be out and about as it is their normal mating season. These scorpions can get up to 5-7 inches long so you should be able to readily avoid them. Also impacted by the monsoon is the volume of termite activity. Termites are swarming and have been highly active. We recommend calling a licensed professional as termites are not a DIY Iftreatment.youareworried about any of these increased pest activities, call your pest control technician.

Will this Monsoon season ever end? How long will our wetter than usual weather last? We are currently in our third year of a La Nina, they generally last between one to three years. This pattern should fade and shift to an El Nino pattern next spring based on forecasting analysis completed by NOAA. That’s great news, but what does that really mean for us here in the west valley? It means that by March 2023 we should be entering into a period of lower-thanaverage rainfall that will progress throughout the rest of next year. When the desert is wet everything really comes to life. We see an increase in plant life and longer lasting greenery as well as increases in wildlife. It is amazing to see it happening around us. In the 11 years that we have been here, I don’t think we have seen as many bobcat

Please join us on Sunday, October 9, for our inaugural Community Paws on the Green golf tournament. This charitable event will be held at the Verrado Golf Club and supports our vision to establish The Community Paws Education and Resource Center to meet the growing needs of our community. We will begin the day with breakfast, followed by an 8 a.m. 4-person scramble shotgun start. Throughout the course, there will be opportunities to win prizes, including “closest to pin” and “longest drive,” each with a guaranteed winner, a $10,000 holein-one prize and more! An awards luncheon, available for players and guests, will follow the tournament with live entertainment and an online auction and raffle. Register for the event, donate or become a sponsor at cponthegreen. com. If you have questions about the event, contact Lori Fonzi at 928-201-6632 or email at cp.onthegreen@gmail.com. If you are not a golfer but would like to contribute, please consider making a donation. You will receive recognition on the tournament website and a certificate of appreciation.
Community Paws has always operated from the homes of volunteers and board members, but the ever-increasing need for assistance has limited our ability to help. To meet the greater demands of our growing community, we have decided to purchase property where we can continue our work. In addition to finding forever homes for animals, Community Paws provides education and awareness to the public regarding responsible pet ownership, assistance to animals and individuals in need and charitable giving to other non-profit organizations. Our vision for The Community Paws Education and Resource Center is to provide a safe place to hold stray dogs, isolate animals for medical purposes and hold training, education and adoption events. This, in turn, will make Community Paws more accessible to the public and our partners, creating an opportunity for animal lovers and volunteers to get involved. Although our goals are hefty, Verrado has supported Community Paws in the past, and we believe you will continue to help us in our commitment to accomplish our vision. Thank you for all your support!
