From Me To You... Amongst other things, I believe in science. Perhaps because I can see the proof in front of my own eyes. You pose a hypothesis, test it and see if you are right or wrong. See? Proof. I also believe in things I can‘t prove, like the innate goodness of people. I just know everyone has the ability to be good - whether they show it or not.

A disease is a harder one to prove to the everyday man. I can see why there are many people who still do not believe in the pandemic that is sweeping our world into tiny shards. Unless someone you know has Corona-19 then who is to say it is real? Well that goes back to belief. Do you believe the scientists? Do you believe the CDC? Do you believe your neighbor who swears by Windex as a cure for everything? (Throwback reference to My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Great movie, you should watch it if you haven’t seen it already.) FYI I do not recommend using Windex for anything other than sparkling windows. Then the recommendations from those in power are so confusing that they muddy the already cloudy waters even further. If you saw what some countries are recommending, it would make you scratch your head in wonder. For example, in Turkey there is a weekend lockdown in effect. So the virus only comes out to play on Friday night and meekly tucks itself away on Monday at 6am? Peru has determined that to keep everyone safe they will allow men to out on the streets on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and women can go out on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Some countries are limiting groups to less than 10 or 50 or 100 people. How does that work? The virus only comes near if there are 101 people but knows that 99 would be a cue to stay away? Either way it has been proven that one thing does help. Wearing masks slows the spread of Covid-19 whether you are in groups of 10, Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

100, or 1000, if you are male or female, and it doesn’t matter which day of the week it is.

I know there are people who believe that wearing a mask is an infringement of their rights, and I hear them. I wonder though. Is it an infringement of rights to request you wear shoes and a shirt in an establishment? The vast majority of people manage to adhere to that request without a murmur. Why is it so much harder to cover your nose and mouth? “I can’t breathe through a mask!” Ah. I know it is not always comfortable and especially in Arizona it can get hot. But. It does not stop you from getting oxygen. It does not increase your intake of Carbon Monoxide. How do I know? Science. I have watched doctors place an oximeter on their finger and measure the oxygen in their blood while wearing all kinds of masks. It does not make a difference. So I have a request for you. Even if you do not want to wear a mask in public, or you don’t believe it will help, please prove to me that my belief in your inherent goodness will prevail and wear one anyway. Thank you.

Cocktail Hour Nothing says summer better than sipping a fresh, seasonal cocktail while you relax with family or a few friends. Here are a few new summer cocktails you can try making and enjoying at home: Fresh from the Market The classic combination of fresh strawberries and mint is super refreshing on a hot day. 1.5 ounces Gin .5 ounce honey syrup (1:1 honey to water) .5 ounce fresh lemon juice 2-3 strawberries (halved) 3-5 fresh mint leaves 2 ounces sparkling water Add honey syrup and strawberries to a shaker and muddle. Add the gin, lemon juice, mint and ice, then shake. Fine strain over ice and top with sparkling water.

Basil Blues Blueberries and basil are a surprisingly tasty duo that melds beautifully with the balanced flavor of the gin. 1.5 ounces The Botanist Gin .75 ounce fresh lemon juice .75 ounce simple syrup 5 blueberries 3 fresh basil leaves Add simple syrup and blueberries to a shaker and muddle. Add the remaining ingredients and ice, then shake. Fine strain over ice, or serve neat. Garnish with basil leaves and blueberries. It’s Pepper Thyme For a unique flavor with a refreshing burst of lime, pick up a yellow bell pepper or two and create this one-of-a-kind cocktail. 1.5 ounces The Botanist Gin .75 ounce fresh lime juice .75 ounce yellow bell pepper syrup Fresh thyme leaves (optional) Add all ingredients to a shaker. Add ice, shake and strain over ice. Garnish with a lime wedge or slice, and fresh thyme leaves (optional).

God Bless

Day after day we learn about heroic episodes being accomplished by the few for so many. The doctors, nurses, hospital workers, custodians, delivery people, the police, fire department, the clerks who serve us in the various areas of commerce – the lists are endless and probably incomplete – but still they carry on ensuring that our lives thrive in an atmosphere of severe difficulties. We read and hear about “Our Heroes.” We acknowledge these defenders of our sanity, and yet, we certainly do not do enough. And then we learn that some of them perish as they march into harm’s way to ensure that we are safe and secure. I am reminded about something Albert Einstein once wrote: “Strange is our situation here upon earth. Each of us comes for a short visit, not knowing why, yet sometimes seeming to divine a purpose. From the standpoint of daily life, however, there is one thing we know: That we’re here for the sake of others. Above all, for those upon whose smile and well-being our own happiness depends, and also for the countess unknown souls with whose fate we are connected by a bond of sympathy. Many times, a day I realize how much my own outer and inner life is built upon the labors of my fellow men, both living and dead, and how earnestly I must exert myself in order to give in return as much as I have received.”

I could not help thinking as I read these words how much of an impact, we have on the lives of those we come in contact with each and every day. We will probably never know to what extent we truly comfort those in need or help those looking for togetherness. The men and women who march into the fray to relieve the pain and suffering, to offer comfort and solace, are the heroes to whom we owe so much. They take their obligations and oaths seriously without concern for themselves, they isolate themselves from family and friends to ensure that we are safe and secure with no concern for their own safety. I have witnessed first-hand these messengers from God, these healers and soothers. I have seen the results of their efforts as I speak to those afflicted and comforted. Can we do enough, can we do more, to express our gratitude? Perhaps we will never sufficiently be able to thank them, but we MUST try. When this nightmare is over, we should join together in our respective houses of worship to congratulate all who helped us through these difficult days and months. Now, however, when we see someone who is in the forefront of combating these tragedies, stop and thank them. It is a small gesture, but one that will give them pride in knowing they mean something to us. God bless all of them. Surely God has blessed us by sending these angels of mercy. The Bug Guy Rodent Apocalypse of 2020 The West Valley has been experiencing a significant increase in rodent activity this summer. This growth appears to be related to a decrease in the coyote population, a typical rodent predator, along with a decline in viable habitat. As we continue to expand our communities and disturb more natural habitat, we can expect an increase in visible rodent activity. As their natural habitat continues to decline, we will see more evidence of rodents around our homes and in our communities. Be aware that adult mice eat often and, therefore, constantly leave droppings and urine droplets as it forages for food, a mate, and harborage. Additionally, mice breed rapidly. A mouse is mature within 35 days after birth and can have a first litter of up to

8 pups at just 60 days old. Individuals usually live only about a year, however, if all their offspring were to survive and reproduce at a similar rate, one pair of house mice could potentially produce a population of more than 500 young in one year! Desert rats and pack rats are both common here in the Valley and are impacted by the same habitat disturbance as mice. Desert rats primarily live underground in burrows, while pack rats prefer to build nests above ground. Neither of these species prefer heights and are not commonly found in attics. So, you may see evidence of burrowing in the yard, or nests in and around your patio. Rats mature in 6 to 8 weeks and have a life expectancy of 3 years. While not as prolific as mice, mature rats can give birth to 2-3 young every 6 to 8 weeks, they could potentially produce a population of more 324 young per year. Rats must have shelter, and a readily available source of water. Efforts to reduce potential harborage for rats will help diminish the likelihood of them taking up residence around your home. To some, rodents may look cute and cuddly, but they are known to carry over 20 different pathogens of human disease. So, it is best to limit contact with them. If you see mice or rats, or their signs such as droppings in or around your house, do not panic. The wisest thing to do is to call an exterminator. We can help determine what rodents you may have, and the extent of the problem. Once the problem has been evaluated, exterminators can develop a plan to carry out an effective rodent control program that will protect you, your family, and your property. Positive Discipline

It is that time of year again: back-to-school, sort of. Here are six things you can do to make the adjustment to learning at home easier on everyone.

1. Set Up a Learning Space. A complete classroom is not necessary, but a designated learning space will help your children focus on learning. Let them decorate the space so they will love using it. 2. Create Back-to-School Routines. Transition from summer activities to schoolfocused ones, talking about new routines and expectations. Select some new back-to-school items and take pictures of the “first day of school”! 3. Plan the Day with Flexibility in Mind. Keeping a routine supports children’s social and emotional development and helps them anticipate what will happen during the day.

12 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

4. Manage Screen Time. Keep screen time to a minimum by limiting it to when children are doing required lessons. Keep an eye on your screen time by taking a break from digital distractions. 5. Connect with Others. Use time at home to focus on family social interactions. Virtual playdates are also an option, or identify friends that are managing risk that matches your own approach. 6. Foster Independent Moments. Plan activities your children can do independently, even if within your range of sight. Art supplies, puzzles, connecting blocks and books are great tools for independent play. Starting a new school year at home might be new territory, but with preparation, your family is sure to have a lot of fun learning experiences together. When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.

There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.”

Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/ or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share. Perhaps the best quote about advertising in a recession came from Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. When asked, “What do you think about a recession?” he responded, “I thought about it and decided not to participate.” -----------------------------We at Estrella Publishing are open for business and here working overtime to support our clients and potential future clients with their marketing strategy. Call / text 623-594-9283 with any questions.

There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown. • The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. • Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times. • Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, can provide greater short-term sales growth, increases during a recession. • When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current and future sales. An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.” An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits. Another strategy used by marketers is using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. When the economy bounces back, regular pricing can return. Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand provides. Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

#VeryVerrado The effects of the COVID-19 panic has caused a massive changes to our daily lives, changes that have often happened rapidly and abruptly. Life adjustments often come with a wide range of experiences and emotions. Sometimes that transition can feel smooth and other times that journey to the new normal is choppy or downright bumpy!

Some people may find themselves in survival mode, gathering information and resources necessary to function at school, work, as a person, and in our relationships with others. Others may be attempting to settle into their new routines. For some, this means trying to combat social isolation. For many, it means learning how to live (or re-live) with friends, family members, partners, or roommates, which is not always easy. I hear a lot of people struggle to find a distraction-free space at home that is conducive to do productive and effective work. For myself, I feel like it takes twice as much time, effort, and energy to do even simple tasks, which can be quite draining. I’ve really had to be very compassionate and patient with myself lately. Others may be struggling with the fatigue, frustration, sadness, anger, grief, and anxiety (among other things) of adjusting. Some people (and I hope there are a lot of you out there), have gone through the adjustment process and are finding comfort in your new norm. In all of this, here are a few important things to remember. This situation is both uncertain and temporary! It’s okay not to feel okay. It’s also okay (and encouraged) to seek help and support! Consider

this a time to reflect on who you want to be during this time. Focus on what is within your control.

It’s good to be informed, and it’s a really good idea to take breaks from conversations, news, and information related to COVID-19. Adjustment is a process that looks differently for most people. This process is not liner or well-defined. Patience and flexibility are really important. Please be respectful of where you are in the process (some self-compassion can go a long way) and also of where others are. It’s okay to be curious about where your friends, family, and others are in their process and to seek to understand their wants and needs at this time. Don’t forget to tell them what you want and need too! Setting a routine can be really helpful! In addition to doing your schoolwork make sure to schedule time for your physical and emotional health, fun, creatively, social connection, and stress relief! It’s okay to set boundaries, even with family members, friends, and professors. I hope that when reading this you are beginning to see that you aren’t alone in the adjustment process. My wish for you is that you have found some peace in the chaos, and learned something about yourself and the world around you. Source: Theresa Nutten, Purdue CAPS Staff Therapist

Home Sweet Home

I’m sure you’ve heard the buzz surrounding the current real estate market. If not, take a few moments to read this article and find out why 2020 is the optimal time to sell your home.

All markets are cyclical, whether it is the financial markets that can affect lending or the real estate market. These markets experience peaks, valleys, and unforeseen variables that can ultimately alter the direction of a market. Timing the top or the bottom is exceedingly difficult, if not impossible. Align yourself with a reputable and experienced real estate professional to provide a valuation of your home, the numbers might surprise you. What does this mean? It does not mean you can forgo all the basic principles of real estate 101. To sell your home for top dollar you still need to present the home at its very best. This includes, but is not limited to, the following: Add a fresh coat of paint, not just interior but exterior painting is equally important. Declutter, remove excess clutter and make your house tidy. (Use the garage for storage). Spruce up the landscaping and curb appeal, add new rock,

get the trees and shrubs trimmed, replace any dead or dying plants, and make sure the irrigation system is working properly. Service your HVAC, there is nothing that stalls a deal quicker than an AC unit that is not working or needs repairs. Deferred maintenance is the #1 killer to all real estate transactions. For years I’ve recommended clients get a home inspection before they go to market, this way you can repair all those minor items and catch anything that might be major before it costs you thousands or worse, costs you the SALE. Be proactive and not reactive. Housing inventory levels in Maricopa County, and across the country, are at an all-time low. Couple the anemic inventory with historically low-interest rates and it has created the perfect storm, catapulting us into a RED HOT real estate market. If selling your home is something you have contemplated or are thinking of pursuing next year, you might rethink your timetable and strike while the iron is hot. they can be impromptu, such as in the car or during dinner. Because lots of little talks can be a lot more effective than a big long talk.

It is not always easy to start conversations with your children about certain topics. You know the talk, right? The talk you have with your child about your expectations on alcohol and drug use.

It’s important to continue the no use message throughout adolescence, especially as they enter junior high and high school, where the pressure to try alcohol or drugs increases. Having those short conversations will help build an open trusting relationship with your child. With that openness they will feel more comfortable coming to you when to discuss serious situations with alcohol or other drugs.

It is never too early to talk with your children about the risks of substance abuse. Money Matters If the pandemic forced you to ground your travel plans this year, you may have extra cash sitting in your bank account. Should you leave your unused travel budget in a savings account? Put it in an emergency fund? Pay down debt? Invest it? Your answer will depend on your goals and your current financial situation, but these are a few things you may want to consider. Keep it in savings. Still planning to take your trip within the next year? Keeping the money in a savings account may be your best option. It may not earn as much as it would if you invested it, but since you’ll likely need the money soon, you may not want to risk possible short-term loss from potential market swings. Put it in your emergency fund. In addition to grounding travel, the pandemic has caused additional financial uncertainty for many people, highlighting the importance of an emergency fund. Consider using your unused travel funds to start or build up yours. We generally recommend having three to six months of living expenses in cash as an emergency fund, but even smaller

amounts can help you stay financially secure in an emergency.

Pay down debt. While it may not bring the immediate rush of joy a vacation does, there’s nothing like paying off debt to relieve some stress, especially if that debt has a high interest rate. Start with high interest rate debt first, especially if it has a double-digit interest rate, like most credit cards. Invest it. If you aren’t planning to travel within the next few years, and you have enough emergency savings, you could earn a higher return, over time, by investing the cash. All investments come with an aspect of risk, so there is the potential that the money you need may not be there when you need it. Make sure to balance your mix of stocks and bonds for your goal, whether it’s a long-term goal, like retirement, or a shorter term goal, such as a future trip. Knowing your comfort with risk and when you want to use the funds will help determine the right balance for your goals. For more detail about which strategies might be right for your personal situation, talk to your financial advisor. Submitted by Wayne Polk, of Edward Jones Investments, Verrado resident
