From Me To You... Technology is the answer to all our problems! We have phones that have more computing power than that with which we sent man to the moon, and devices that can turn on our lights and lock our doors. Need a phone number? Ask Siri! And that doesn’t even include the basics like appliances to wash our clothes and do our dishes. Yes we have it made in the shade.

That is until the power goes out. Anyone else hit by the latest round of storms? We were, big time. Our power was out for almost 24 hours. At first it was an adventure. I obviously needed to find a way to make coffee in the morning - but thanks to my outdoor grill I had some cowboy coffee going in under 15 minutes. Not quite as instantaneous as my 30 second Keurig and it was possibly the strongest cup of Joe I have drunk since leaving Europe. However, problem solved, I had my caffeine intake covered. Next on to more mundane tasks like work. Ah no internet. So I took the day off, it was a Saturday anyway and so what if my deadline was looming? I can play hookey for a day. What do I usually do on a day off? Well as I have already established, the internet was down so I turned to a good old fashioned book. Great. As I settled down in a comfy chair I began to feel a little uncomfortable. It was getting hot. Really hot. Oh that’s right, the air conditioning was down too. Hmm. The thermostat stubbornly refused to switch off and it mocked me as it gradually showed the temperature in the house coming level with my blood temperature.

distances by horse, cart and on foot, they also crossed what to me would be insurmountable obstacles. What made those men and women come up to the Grand Canyon or the Rocky Mountains and think, “Let’s keep going, there is something better on the other side.”? And then they did it. They crossed the obstacle and made it to the other side. Amazing. Once settled it was not easy going even then. Scorpions, snakes, not to mention the crippling heat. And they persevered. It makes me think twice about complaining when my indoor temperature spikes and my ice-cream starts to melt. Hang on, not the icecream! Thankfully we have friends who own a generator and had power, so they lent us the means to keep our fridge running until our power came back on. There was not enough juice to run the air conditioning, but I am thankful for small mercies. I am also thankful for the great ones, like the power coming back on in time to sleep in comfort. No matter how many times I fantasize about living off the grid and going back to simpler times, I know I am not strong enough to go all the way back. I could probably manage to clean my clothes and cook my meals over a fire, but I draw the line at losing Candy Crush. ;)

Catherine Uretsky Editor, Main Street magazine info@estrellapublishing.com 623-594-9283

How did people survive before air conditioning? I know they did, I know that they deliberately lived in places like Arizona and Florida without the conveniences we rely on today. These people continuously fascinate me. Whenever I drive anywhere in America I marvel at the tenacity of the pioneers. Not only did they travel across great 4 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

On Our Cover

This month we have three co-leaders and one member of the Camera Club of Verrado - John Steiner, Wendy Kaveney, Kathy Williams and Rose Schierl.

The Camera Club was started over two years ago as a fun place to share the love of photography. There is a group Facebook page where members of the group are encouraged to share their images and constructively criticise each other’s work. There is no nastiness allowed and those who are unkind are removed from the group. “Our mission is to provide a place where people who are passionate about photography can expand their photographic interest and skills by sharing with and learning from each other.” The members are as diverse as their pictures, ranging from professional to amateur, many of the members are snowbirds (but not all by any means.) They arrange outings of interesting events where pictures can be taken and shared - the Buckeye Air Show and Dog Days are just two examples. The group is active from October to May partly because of the migration of it’s members but also because let’s face it, no-one wants to be outside taking pictures in our summer heat!

6 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

If you are interested in joining the group you can request membership at www.facebook.com/groups/ VerradoCameraClub/ There is no cost to become a member of the group, you just need to verify that you are a Verrado resident. You also do not need to have fancy equipment to be a part of the group, as long as you can take pictures you will be fine. When I asked Kathy what the best part of being in this group is she replied, “We have fun together, taking pictures and sharing our knowledge with each other.” If you have an interest in photography, why not give it a try?

Home Sweet Home While spring is typically the busiest period in real estate, particularly for families looking to get in to a new home before the school year starts, the fall months have become increasingly active for those who have more flexibility or are looking for a good deal.

With increased competition in many cities around the country, finding ways to simplify the home buying process while saving money is top of mind for potential home buyers. Many consumers are seeking real estate brokerages that make the home buying process less stressful by providing access to tech-based tools, data and the guidance of smart, local agents.

“Buying a home is typically the most expensive purchase most people will make, and people are choosing brokerages that offer the right tools and data to help inform their decisions and make the process more efficient,” said Dario Cardile, Vice President, Growth Marketing at Owners.com. “Savvy home buyers are utilizing technology and data to inform their home search, but are also demonstrating that they value working with an expert local agent who can offer on-the-ground expertise and help them get the best deal.” Cardile offers these tips for ways potential home buyers can utilize technology to simplify the real estate process. * Ensure that your finances are in order. To 10 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

purchase the home of your dreams you’ll need the right loan. So before you begin your search, request a free annual copy of your credit report from the government-authorized AnnualCreditReport.com. Pay attention to the scores in your report, as the better your scores, the more likely you are to receive favorable terms and interest rates on your loan. * Explore the area before you get there. Whether it’s a local dog park, fun shops to visit on the weekend or a quaint bistro for a night out, your neighborhood needs extend beyond the walls of your home. And don’t be afraid to look up area attractions on social media and read some reviews. It’s a great way to learn what everyone is saying about your potential neighborhood. * Find the right agent. A great real estate agent can help you save time and money in the real estate process. While many consumers are selfinforming their search with online data, a recent survey from Owners.com of more than 1,000 recent home buyers nationwide found that the majority (83 percent) worked with an agent to purchase their home. An expert local agent can provide inside knowledge of the property and community, on-the-ground expertise, and help you strike the best deal to get into your dream home. The fall real estate market won’t wait for you, so start your planning now and begin your housing search with the power of technology at your fingertips. With you, your agent and technology working hand in hand, your dream house is there for the taking.

The Doctor Is In Over-Nutrition and Neurodegenerative Diseases

Over-nutrition is a term that refers to how excessive nutrients can damage the human body. The modern diet has become a common source of excessive nutrients and increases dangerous levels of systemic inflammation within the body. The stress from the inflammation will activate the genes within our DNA and trigger or worsen common medical conditions such as cancer or diabetes. Many are familiar with the fact that eating too many calories or excessive amounts of carbohydrates (sugars and starches) can worsen a diabetic’s blood sugar level. The blood sugar levels increase to dangerous levels not because there are too many sugars in the food. It increases because excessive calories and carbohydrates trigger more inflammation and worsen diabetes at the genetic level. Cooking food at high temperatures or for too long will form another dangerous nutrient called AGE (advanced glycation end product), and consuming excessive amounts of AGEs will also trigger an overnutrition reaction and worsen a diabetics blood sugar level

sugar levels through the inflammatory overnutrition reaction as well.

Fortunately, you can reverse the inflammation and damage of overnutrition by activating a natural cellular repair mechanism called hormesis and can be activated through a simple eating pattern called intermittent fasting. In order to try intermittent fasting, you simply limit the calories you eat (maximum of 600 for men and 500 for women) on one or two nonconsecutive days per week. This is not a new dietary pattern for humans. Our stone age ancestors naturally engaged in fasting due to scarcity of food but the over-abundance of food in our modern world has eliminated these periods of involuntary but health-promoting intermittent fasting. Minimizes consumption of calorie dense foods, avoiding mindless snacking, cooking foods at lower temperatures and adding a little intermittent fasting can go a long way towards preserving your health and even reverse some of your present medical conditions. Health Guide

Vaccines play an important role in keeping you and your family members healthy, and when you make sure everyone receives the recommended vaccines at the right ages, you will be helping to protect them before they are exposed to serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has launched a new interactive guide (cdc.gov/vaccines/growing) to help navigate the vaccines recommended at each stage of life. This resource teaches families about vaccinepreventable diseases - like flu, whooping cough and HPV cancers - and highlights the recommended timing for key immunizations. Here’s a quick rundown of what you need to know about vaccines at different ages.

Pregnant women should always get a yearly flu shot. In the third trimester of every pregnancy, you should get the whooping cough vaccine (Tdap). Talk to your doctor about other vaccines you may need before, during and after becoming pregnant.

Making sure your babies get all the recommended vaccines on time is the best way for you to protect them from 14 serious diseases before the age of 2 years old. Check the interactive guide for the full recommended immunization schedule that is designed to protect your babies early, before they are exposed to potentially life-threatening diseases. From ages 3 through 6, your children need additional doses of chickenpox (varicella) vaccine; measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine; polio vaccine and Tdap vaccine, as well as a flu vaccine every year. From ages 7 through 10, your children should continue to get a flu vaccine every year, by the end of October if possible. Preteens need four vaccines to provide protection now and in the future: Tdap vaccine to protect against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough; human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to protect against cancers caused by HPV; meningococcal vaccine to protect against meningitis; and a yearly flu vaccine. All adults need a flu vaccine every year by the end of October, if possible, as well as a tetanus and diphtheria (Td) vaccine every 10 years. Healthy adults 50 years and older should get a shingles vaccine. Adults 65 years or older need one dose of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) followed by one dose of pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23). Adults younger than 65 years who have certain health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, cancer or HIV may also need one or both of these vaccines. The CDC’s new interactive tool provides families with information on the importance of on-time vaccination and a detailed look at the vaccine schedule. Find it at cdc.gov/vaccines/growing, along with a guide you can print and bring to your next doctor’s visit.

#VeryVerrado Labor Day is a U.S. national holiday held the first Monday every September. Unlike most U.S. holidays, it is a strange celebration without rituals, except for shopping and barbecuing. For most people it simply marks the last weekend of summer and the start of the school year.

History of Labor Day The first Labor Day occurred in 1882 in New York City under the direction of that city’s Central Labor Union. In the 1800s, unions covered only a small fraction of workers and were balkanized and relatively weak. The goal of organizations like the Central Labor Union and more modern-day counterparts like the AFL-CIO was to bring many small unions together to achieve a critical mass and power. The organizers of the first Labor Day were interested in creating an event that brought different types of workers together to meet each other and recognize their common interests. However, the organizers had a large problem: No government or company recognized the first Monday in September as a day off work. The issue was solved temporarily by declaring a oneday strike in the city. All striking workers were expected to march in a parade and then eat and drink at a giant picnic afterwards. Common misconceptions The common misconception is that since Labor Day is a national holiday, everyone gets the day off. Nothing could be further from the truth.

While the first Labor Day was created by striking, the idea of a special holiday for workers was easy for politicians to support. It was easy because proclaiming a holiday, like Mother’s Day, costs legislators nothing and benefits them by currying favor with voters. In 1887, Oregon, Colorado, Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey all declared a special legal holiday in September to celebrate workers. Within 12 years, half the states in the country recognized Labor Day as a holiday. It became a national holiday in June 1894 when President Grover Cleveland signed the Labor Day bill into law. While most people interpreted this as recognizing the day as a national vacation, Congress’ proclamation covers only federal employees. It is up to each state to declare its own legal holidays. Have we lost the spirit of Labor Day? If you work all the time and never really take a vacation, start a new ritual that honors the original spirit of Labor Day. Give yourself the day off. Don’t go in to work. Shut off your phone, computer and other electronic devices connecting you to your daily grind. Then go to a barbecue, like the original participants did over a century ago, and celebrate having at least one day off from work during the year! Cooking Up Fun

Cooking with your kids is just plain fun. Everyone likes good food, and being in the kitchen offers an excellent opportunity to work together toward one common goal. And the added benefit, of course, is that your kids can learn to follow directions, brush up on their math skills, find creativity and gain a solid sense of accomplishment. Consider these suggestions as you get ready to cook up a storm with your child.

* Expect messiness. As young kids brush up on motor skills while measuring and mixing, spills, stains and a little waste will be the norm. * Experience trumps outcome. Some projects may not come out as planned, presenting the opportunity to teach your child to deal with disappointment. Share a laugh together, discuss what may have gone wrong and try again. * Don’t be afraid to experiment. Does your child want to try a new flavor combination or cooking technique? Bring it on, perhaps doling out a small portion of a family-sized dish with which to pursue his idea. * Keep the conversation flowing. As you prepare

Opioids

Prescription opioids are powerful, painreducing medicines. You can find them in pill forms, syrups or even prescription patches. Commonly prescribed opioids include hydrocodone, morphine and oxycodone. But they also can cause overdose deaths. Every day, 115 Americans die from opioid overdoses, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The United States is battling an opioid crisis. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that up to 71 percent of opioid tablets prescribed after surgery went unused. Trouble with opioids can start at home, where unused medicines are stored in cabinets or drawers and are ingested either intentionally or unintentionally by people who do not have a medical need for these prescriptions.

Nationwide Emergency Department Sample. As more opioids are being prescribed to adults, the risk of both accidental and intentional exposure increases for children and adolescents. Grandparents, neighbors and others who take care of children should make sure they have disposed of any unused medicines. Opioids also can be harmful to pets. “In the last two decades, the FDA has received heartbreaking reports of accidental exposure to powerful prescription pain medicines such as fentanyl patches - most of them in children under 2 years old,” added FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research Director Dr. Janet Woodcock. “That’s why disposing of unneeded medicines is such an important step in keeping your family safe.” Disposing of unused medicines can help turn the tide on the devastating opioid crisis affecting so many American families. Proper disposal of unused prescription opioids saves lives. Learn more at www.fda.gov/DrugDisposal.

“We’re facing a public health tragedy right in our own backyards; opioid addiction and overdose affect communities across America,” explained FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb. “We know that people fighting addiction often began by accessing prescription opioids from a friend or family member. It’s critical we all do our part in safely disposing of these medicines once they’re no longer needed as part of our effort to ending this crisis.” Make sure your medicines do not get into the wrong hands. According to data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, half of people who misused prescription opioids got them from a friend or family member. Unused opioids can also pose a risk to kids. Even child-resistant containers cannot completely prevent a child from taking medicines prescribed to someone else. Emergency departments see thousands of patients for opioid overdose and addiction each year, according to data from the 20 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

The Bug Guy

With our monsoon season coming to an end, possibly, hopefully, it’s time to clean up, dig out, and get the repairs done. It feels good to live in a community that comes together when adversity strikes. As soon as the storms were over our community members were helping each other. We checked on our neighbors’ houses, cleaned up downed trees, and generally did the right thing. We did these things because we wanted to help. We do these things because that’s what neighbors do. Thank you! With such a heavy and lengthy monsoon season this year we can expect to see a reduction in scorpion activity. As our scorpion population can’t swim, those scorpions caught in low lying areas have a very low level of survival. The scorpions that survived will continue to be extremely active throughout the rest of the year. We can expect an increase in our cricket population too as crickets thrive with more humidity and fresh plant life to munch on. The increase in crickets will support an increase in scorpion activity as well!

With these storms there has already been an increase in mosquito activity. We can all help with this issue by making sure that we have no standing water on our property. Our community is actively engaged to help address this public health pest in common areas. Coyote sightings are on the rise as well in the west valley. Around the end of the month we should start seeing great horned owls migrating here for the winter too. So, keep an eye on your small dogs and cats. It is best not to leave them outside unsupervised, as both coyotes and owls are very effective hunters. Their attacks are very fast and often lethal. Snake activity will also increase throughout the month with a particular increase in rattlesnake activity. As our evenings start too cool off, a rattlesnake’s ability to hunt improves. Towards the end of the month rattlesnakes will be looking for warm rocks or concrete pavers to build their core heat reserves. When you walk out onto your patio, it’s always prudent turn on the light and check for snakes before you open the door. As individuals we make a community, as a community we make it better for all of us. Information provided by Larry Cash Estrella Mountain Pest Control

Money Matters If you are fortunate, you will retain your physical and mental capacities throughout your life and can always live independently. But if you ever require some form of long-term care, will you be prepared? For example, it costs $97,500 per year, on average, for a private room in a nursing home, according to the 2017 Cost of Care Survey produced by Genworth. Furthermore, Medicare typically pays only a small percentage of these expenses. So, how do you protect yourself against these potentially catastrophic costs? Essentially, you have four options:

Self-insure – You can try to build enough financial assets to cover the costs of a long-term care event. However, you would need to accumulate an extremely large sum to fully protect yourself, and you’d be diverting assets that could be used to help fund your retirement. Long-term care insurance – A traditional longterm care insurance policy will pay for qualified long-term care costs. The younger you are when you purchase your policy, the lower your annual premiums are likely to be.

Hybrid/linked benefit insurance – Because of some concerns about paying for insurance but never needing care with traditional long-term care insurance, this type of insurance provides a death benefit plus long-term care coverage. You can accelerate the death benefit to help pay for long-term care costs, and you can also choose to create an additional pool for these costs after the death benefit has been exhausted., But if you don’t need long-term care, you still have the life insurance death benefit. Life insurance with long-term care/chronic illness rider – By choosing a permanent life insurance policy with this rider, you can accelerate all or part of the death benefit to pay for long-term care costs. This option generally provides more flexibility in paying premiums than a hybrid policy, which may require a larger dollar commitment. Similar to hybrid, you still have the life insurance benefit if you don’t need care. Which option is best for you? There’s no one “right” answer for everyone, but a financial professional can help you choose. Submitted by Wayne Polk, of Edward Jones Investments, Verrado resident
