From Me To You... Back to School! Those three words struck terror in my heart as a child, new people, new schedules, new places, new opportunities to embarrass myself with the amount of things I didn’t know. Would my new back-to-school outfits be cool or not? Would I get the teacher everyone loved, or be stuck with the ones everyone dreaded? The list was endless.

As a parent I felt slightly differently about back to school time. Entertaining 4 small people of varying ages for several months in the blistering heat of summer vacation went rapidly from an adventure full of opportunities to becoming a burden of keeping them busy and trying to stop the endless bickering. I must say that despite my resolutions at the beginning or each summer I did use television and later the internet in heavy doses - always in a educational way, of course ;) Now I am getting a degree and back-to-school applies to me. It is very different approaching education as an adult who has chosen to reapply myself to academia. I am soon to begin my second year as a Mature Student and this time I have a confidence in my abilities as well as

an interest in what I will be learning. Finding notebooks and pens is fun when I am doing it for myself. Ordering text books and choosing my subjects holds an appeal that I don’t remember from my youth. I studied Shakespeare in high school and we all dreaded it. The groans as we tried to understand the language would reverberate around the classroom. Now I see Twelfth Night on the curriculum and I am excited for the challenge. Perhaps that has something to do with my ability to get help via the internet now but either way it is going to be interesting. Having a full year under my belt I have the confidence that I can do this, and I realized that I enjoy learning. Interacting with others taking the same path and making new friends is all part of this journey and I am looking forward to going back to school!

On Our Cover Grace Weaver is a 17 year old Verrado resident who saw a need and did something about it.

On vacation in the Dominican Republic last year, Grace was horrified to see children running in the garbage strewn streets without shoes. The poverty in this area is so acute that shoes are a luxury that many families cannot afford. Compounding the problem is the lack of trash service so the roads are covered with garbage, including broken glass and debris. Grace was determined to help in some way. Once back in Verrado she looked around her family home and realized that they had many pairs of shoes they didn’t even wear. Some were to small, others the wrong style. Why not see if they could be put to good use? She contacted orphanages in the Dominican Republic and Haiti and asked them if they would want gently used shoes. The answer was a resounding , “Yes!” Grace then reached

out to family and friends and collected over 100 pairs of new and gently used shoes to donate. Some people donated money as they lived far away and Grace used that and a family contact in the shipping industry to get the shoes to Florida where a charitable group was sending food and necessities out to Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Grace’s shoe donations were included in those shipments and the orphanages were delighted to be able to provide shoes to families in the area. Grace is determined to continue her work and has set up a website http://www.solesearching. org where you can contact her for more information. You can donate new or gently used shoes in all sizes and they will be picked up, you can contribute to the shipping costs of other donations, or learn how to start a collection of shoe donations yourself. She is looking into making Sole Searching an official charity so if there is anyone who can help her with the startup logistics please contact her. Grace is a force to be reckoned with, and at the age of 17 has already done so much. Her future plans include getting her pilot’s license and college, she has her sights set on Pepperdine and I don’t doubt that she will get there.

Yum Yum

I’m a soup girl, usually ordering it when I’m dining out if it’s on the menu, and I make it at home since it’s often a great way to use up leftovers in the fridge with a few pantry additions. This version of corn chowder is a crowd favorite ~ layering of flavors and textures ~ the sweet crispness of corn kernels, the creamy smoothness of the pureed potatoes and coconut milk, and the spicy kick of Madras curry powder. Summer Curried Corn Chowder 1 large yellow onion, diced 2 garlic cloves, minced Pinch of dried thyme OR ¼ tsp fresh thyme

2 T unsalted butter 3-1/2 C frozen corn OR 4 ears fresh, shucked with kernels cut off cob 4 C chicken bone broth or vegetable stock 2 large gold potatoes, peeled & diced 1 tsp sugar 2 T unsalted butter, melted 1 T Madras curry powder (or mild curry if you like it less spicy) ¼ - ½ C canned coconut milk 1 T chopped fresh cilantro Salt & pepper to taste Saute onion, garlic, and thyme in butter over medium heat in a large stock pot until onion begins to soften. Add the corn, stock, potatoes, and sugar and bring to boil. Lower heat and simmer for 25-30 minutes. In separate pan, melt 2 T butter and add curry powder; cook 3-5 minutes until fragrant. Remove soup from heat to puree in food processor. Scoop half of the soup into the bowl of the processor and blend until smooth. Return to soup pot. Stir in curry butter, coconut milk, cilantro, salt & pepper; cook for an additional 15 minutes so that flavors can blend. Best eaten the day it’s made! And always have some crusty bread nearby whenever you Our mission is to deliver holistic, serve soup!! patient-centered care in an eeort to make a positive diierence in the lives of women in the West Valley. Money Matters

In just a few weeks, students will be heading off to college – and parents will be getting out their checkbooks. Without a college-bound student in your home right now, you might not be thinking much about tuition and other higher education expenses, but if you have young children, these costs may eventually be of concern – so how should you prepare for them? It’s never too soon to start saving and investing. In fact, nearly half of Americans say they don’t feel like they’re saving enough to cover future education expenses, according to a 2022 survey conducted by financial services firm Edward Jones. Even if you can only devote relatively modest amounts for your children’s education, these contributions can add up over time. But where should you put your money? Personal savings accounts are the top vehicle Americans are using for their education funding strategies, but there are other options, one of which is a 529 plan, which may offer more attractive features, including the following:

• Possible tax benefits – If you invest in a 529 education savings plan, your earnings can grow federally income tax-free, provided the money is used for qualified education expenses. • Flexibility in naming the beneficiary – As the owner of the 529 plan, you can name anyone you want as the beneficiary. You can also change the beneficiary. If your eldest child foregoes college, you can name a younger sibling or another eligible relative. • Support for non-college programs – A 529 plan can pay for qualified expenses at trade or vocational schools, including apprenticeship programs registered with the U.S. Dept of Labor. • Payment of student loans – A 529 plan can help pay off federal or private student loans. But as the cost of college and other postsecondary programs continues to rise, it will become even more important for parents to find effective ways to save for their children’s future education expenses. So, consider how a 529 plan can help you and your family. And the sooner you get started, the better. Submitted by Wayne Polk, AAMS, Financial Advisor, of Edward Jones, Verrado resident

The Bug Guy

Many of our residents did not grow up in the Phoenix Valley and have a lot of questions about how best to protect their loved ones and property from these types of pests. Due to the unfamiliarity with local pests, and perceived dangers we are oftentimes asked: • Can you get rid of all the bugs? • Are the products you use safe around my pets? My children? • Can you only use nontoxic, organic chemicals? Essential oils? Licensed technicians are required to follow federal laws for application of all pesticides which are listed on each container of pesticide. These laws define and restrict how and where we can treat, and the strength of the pesticide mix to ensure your safety. It is essential to continually monitor and keep up to date with the label and Supplemental Data Sheet to ensure

that these pesticides continue to be applied to tin the safest way possible. Use of what appear to be nontoxic, organic chemicals or essential oils oftentimes carry a higher risk than nonorganic chemicals. Be sure to ask your technician about the SDS for applied chemicals if you are concerned. For the safety of your family and pets, we always recommend that you allow the applied pesticide to “dry” fully before allowing access to the treated areas. (Arizona is hot enough that usually it’s dry in under 10 minutes) Another factor that is a concern is the weather and its impact on the applied pesticide. Surprisingly, with the right pesticide, there is minimal impact to its efficacy due to rain and wind. If the pesticide application has time to dry, the life span is more than 60 days for most pesticides recommended for use in Arizona. These pesticides are formulated to withstand the heat, UV index, and rain as they are in a class of chemicals that are encapsulated in a kind of shell that protects the active ingredient from harsh weather conditions. With a conscientious technician and the right chemicals pest control reduces pest infestations and keeps your family safe. Submitted by Larry Cash, of Estrella Mountain Pest Control
