From Me To You... Back to school! It is hard to believe I am saying those words. For so long our children and grandchildren have been stuck at home and life has been on pause. But now life can resume — as if nothing happened. I already see message boards full of posts from parents scrambling to find specific school supplies, asking which school or class local children are going to attend, and over all of this is the palpable sense of relief that we can finally get back to normal. I don’t know about you but when I started to venture out into the world again I was tentative to say the least. Like a creature emerging from hibernation, I was not sure what the world would look like after so long. It is one thing to have a layer of protection (i.e. a mask) between me and those germs, but walking around without a mask took some getting used to. It wasn’t just the protection I missed. Having a cloth over half of my face has had several advantages. You see, the mask not only gave me protection, it also covered half of my wrinkles and half of any blemishes. Add a pair of sunglasses and I barely showed my face to the world at all! Ever run out of the house after chugging a cup of coffee? No need to be concerned about breathing noxious fumes over everyone when you wear a mask! It also reduced the amount of halitosis I was exposed to. That was quite a bonus. Vanity aside, the best side effect of wearing masks for my family was the reduction of colds and flu that we experienced last year. Every year we suffer through various viral bugs, and due to health issues, a cold in my children becomes pneumonia for me. I am sure some of that freedom form illness was due to the quarantine, but once the kids went back to school I had braced myself for the expected germ swap. And... nothing! No colds, no flu, no random virus swept our house and it was glorious. I think the Japanese culture of mask wearing Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

when anyone is sick has great merit, and going forwards I am encouraging my family to do the same.

I don’t know about you, but we amassed quite the mask collection during the pandemic. It took a while to find the right size, shape, and coverage for everyone, resulting in a basket full of left overs. I suppose I could fashion them into a small quilt or tea cozy but tucking them into backpacks seems much easier. That way if the kids end up in a situation where a classmate is coughing and spluttering, they can whip out a mask and protect themselves. Going back to that quilting idea. I bet there is an enterprising group of quilters out there who could make a covid quilt from all our masks. It could be placed in a museum so people could see it in the future and marvel at what we have overcome. I will not be one of those people — I still haven’t finished my crocheted blanket I started at the beginning of the pandemic!

Will my family be responsible for the debt?

If I take out a reverse mortgage, does that mean I will leave nothing to my family?

The Bug Guy When thinking about pest control, too often we conjure images of someone running around with toxic chemicals spraying haphazardly and putting human health at risk. A pest management professional uses Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to control pests, not simply relying on the application of pesticide. IPM relies heavily on the inspection process to develop a control strategy. A pest management professional is trained to understand pest biology and to think like a pest. What does it like? Where will you find it and why is it there? What can be done to make it go away? IPM control strategies can include blocking a pest’s entrance into a building, removing or reducing favorable conditions for the pest, or physically removing the pest with traps or a vacuum. When a control product (pesticide) is applied, it is used in a manner where it will contact the pest and have limited contact with people or pets based on label guidelines. Control products are necessary tools for the pest control professional, but they can have a bad rep in the eyes of the

public. This is due to misinformation and a lack of understanding of the products available. No longer are the days of DDT or chlordane being applied inside and out of every American home. Now, treatments are targeted to where the pest will be present and its hiding spots (generally cracks & crevices). Thanks to advancements in technology, many of today’s control products are less hazardous when used per label instructions than those previously on the market. Some are even less hazardous than commonly used household products. Most homeowners never think to wear eye protection and gloves when wielding a gallon of bleach in the laundry room, despite its corrosive properties and danger label. The mission of the pest control industry is to protect people and their investments. Termites can destroy a building. Rodents can contaminate food, spread disease and cause property damage. Roaches can produce allergens that trigger asthma. Mosquitoes, fleas and ticks can spread blood-borne pathogens. Bed bugs can cause physical and emotional harm. Professional pest control has an important role to play and can be safely integrated into areas where we live, work and play. Submitted by Larry Cash, of Estrella Mountain Pest and Termite Control

On Our Cover Our beautiful cover model this month is Arpi Hamilton, local resident and cancer survivor.

Arpi is no stranger to cancer, she works at Cancer Treatment Centers of America, her Mom passed away from the disease, and it was always in the back of Arpi’s mind, “What if I get cancer too?” So it was not a great surprise when she found a lump in her breast. What was surprising is that she sat on it for 2 months. Then one morning Arpi woke up and thought she was lying on a hard toy — it was the lump and it was painful. 48 hours later she had a diagnosis, it was Triple Negative Breast Cancer. During all her treatments Arpi worked and was in school full time. She managed her workload so that everything was done before her chemo, she refused to slow down. Arpi says it was like watching someone else’s life unfold before her eyes. Although her prognosis was less than one year, she soldiered on, through chemo, surgery and more chemo. After all that the cancer was not gone, and she was done. She did not want to suffer through any more treatments.

Many rounds of radiation followed and finally she was declared cancer free! Arpi feels like she is not the same person anymore. She no longer exists, she lives. She is more spontaneous and loves to experience things and create new memories. Birthdays in particular are so special to her. 3 years to the day after becoming cancer free, Arpi won Mrs. Arizona on August 15th, 2020. She had never entered a pageant in her life and now she is excited to be able to use her platform to educate others about cancer screenings and awareness, and to raise money for breast cancer research. So far her team has raised enough money to fund research at ASU for 1 1/2 years! Arpi hopes to see a cure in her lifetime, it is a wish that we wholeheartedly support. If you or anyone you know would like to be featured in a future magazine contact me @ catherine@estrellapublishing.com

Her family sat her down and told her that she was being selfish by giving up. They were not ready to give her up to the disease. She decided that they were right and she resumed treatment.

Back To School “Time to get up! Did you brush your teeth? Did you pack your lunch? Let’s go. We are going to be late!” Yup, it is time to prepare for Backto-School. This school year will be the first day of school back in school since the COVID pandemic. This year everyone is back in the classroom, and this will take some getting used to after doing virtual learning for so long. Virtual learning may have created some not-so-good habits, may have broken various routines, and even may have created some social anxiety in some students. This new school year is an opportunity to start a new chapter to reach new goals, restart your routines, and build new positive habits. It is so important to keep the lines of communication open between you and your children. Many children feel anxious about going back to school and do not know how to tell you that they do. This article will provide you with signs of anxiety, coping skills, tips, and ideas to help your students transition smoothly into the new school year. There are many different forms of anxiety signs, for example:

· · · · · · · ·

• Separation anxiety: A child is worried about being separated from parents/ caregiver

• Social anxiety: The child is excessively self-conscious, making difficult to socialize and function in group settings. • Selective mutism: The child has a tough time speaking in some settings, like to a teacher, classmates, or even parents when they are anxious. • Attendance problems: A child refusing to go to school, saying they are sick when they may not be sick Ensure they know they can talk openly and freely with you about their feelings regarding going back to school or anything else they could be worrying about. A great idea is to do a fun activity with your child to help diffuse their stress and help them confide in you. If you would like to read about some coping skills and helpful organizational tips on going back to school, please visit our blog at: https://www. wayoutwestcoalition.org/blog/ All of us at the WOW Coalition, we wish you all a great school year!! Furry Friends Suddenly, somehow it’s August. The temperatures hover at around 110 or more, dipping a little lower when a desert rainstorm blows through, leaving behind oppressive humidity. I don’t know about your canine companion, but mine has discovered that she is as equally fond of naps in the shade of our patio as she is of sleeping on the tile floors in our airconditioned house. We are, indeed, in the thick of the Dog Days of Summer.

What are the Dog Days of Summer? In Hellenistic astrology, they were known as the days following the annual rising of Sirius, known as the “Dog Star,” which the ancients connected with heat, drought, sudden thunderstorms, lethargy, fever, mad dogs and bad luck. From July 3 through August 11, this period is now considered to be the hottest, most uncomfortable part of summer and coincides with our monsoon season, which runs from July through September. What better time than during these sweltering Dog Days of Summer to adopt or foster a new furry friend? Go to CommunityPaws.org and consider filling out an application for one of our available pets. While you’re there, check out the merchandise offered in our shop (or go to CommunityPaws.org/shop), and select something for yourself or a friend to help celebrate the Dog Days of Summer and support our cause!

Please remember to walk your pooch in the coolest part of the day and keep them off hot pavement and asphalt! Paws on Parade is coming back! Mark Saturday, October 30 on your calendar and join us for this annual event to celebrate, honor and just plain show off our four-legged friends. Held in the Village Green in downtown Verrado, Community Paws will host a parade, a Halloween K-9 costume contest and a pet- centric market with plenty of fun activities for the whole family (with or without dogs) to enjoy. And if you own a local business, please consider sponsoring Paws on Parade; not only will you help out Community Paws, but you’ll also receive community-wide exposure for your business. Find out more about the available sponsoring/advertising opportunities by sending an email to info@ CommunityPaws.org. Submitted for Community Paws by Lyndie Mason Warner, a Verrado resident.

Back to School Prep

Parents can help make the “back to school” transition much smoother for their child if they prepare in advance.

can impair a child’s ability to learn. Skipping breakfast especially is a detriment to a child’s education.

Try to add activities or planned outings to your child’s day. This structure helps prepare them to be on a schedule when they return to the classroom. If the child will be going to a new school, parents may want to schedule a visit with their child before the first day. Consider taking your child on a fun shopping trip where they can help pick out their clothes, lunchbox and supplies.

Adjust your child’s sleep schedule a few weeks in advance to help avoid struggling to get them out of bed for school. Set up a consistent daily routine so that your child wakes up and goes to sleep at the same times each day. If you have not created one already, start a bedtime routine, including bathing, selecting clothes for the next day, cuddling together for a bedtime story and a kiss goodnight. Begin a regular morning routine that includes a healthy breakfast, packing a nutritious lunch, grooming and getting dressed for the day.

Ensuring your child has adequate sleep and proper nutrition is very important. Your child will do their best if they get to sleep early and eat a healthy breakfast each day before school. A daily diet of junk food is not compatible with learning. It can cause listlessness and hyperactivity which

When the weather gets hot, it’s natural to seek cooling remedies such as splashing in a pool, sipping iced beverages and making meals that are quick to prepare and don’t heat up the kitchen. Fresh grapes are a cooling ingredient that can refresh and elevate summertime meals with a burst of color, flavor and pleasing texture. For a fabulous finish, go all in with a refreshing Grape Tart with Lemon Cream for dessert. Using a store-bought, prebaked tart shell or graham cracker crust makes this an easy, no-bake confection. Fresh Grape Tart with Lemon Cream Prep time: 15 minutes plus chilling Yield: Makes 10 servings Ingredients 1 prebaked tart shell or graham cracker crust 4 ounces reduced-fat cream cheese (Neufchatel) 1/4 cup low-fat sour cream

2 tablespoons granulated sugar 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice About 3 cups grapes, halved Directions In a medium bowl, whisk together the cream cheese, sour cream and 2 tablespoons sugar. Whisk in the lemon juice. Spread the cream cheese mixture over the tart base, leaving a 1/2inch border. Arrange the grapes in concentric circles over the cream cheese mixture. Chill until ready to serve.

Money Matters Like most people, you may have several financial goals. But can you reach them all? It would be simple if you had great wealth. But you’ll likely need to rank your goals in terms of their importance to your life and then follow appropriate strategies to achieve them.

When prioritizing your goals, consider following this process: • Identify goals as “must have” or “nice to have.” Making sure you don’t outlive your resources is a must-have goal, so you need to be as certain as possible of achieving it. On the other hand, a nice-to-have goal might be something like buying a vacation home. If you don’t attain the money needed for this goal, you do have room to compromise, perhaps by scaling down to a smaller home in a different area or just renting a place for a few weeks a year. Having this flexibility can provide a psychological benefit, too. Since this goal doesn’t have an either-or outcome, you won’t have to feel that you failed if you don’t get the

big vacation home – instead, you can still enjoy the results of your investment efforts, even at a more modest scale.

• Put “price tags” on your goals. You need to know what your goals will cost. To arrive at these price tags, you may want to work with a financial professional who has the tools and technology to create hypothetical illustrations and scenarios. • Follow an appropriate strategy. The nature of your goals and their estimated cost will drive your investment strategy. So, for example, using the must-have goal mentioned above – the need to avoid outliving your money – you’ll want to balance your growth objectives with your comfort with risk, as well as maintain an appropriate withdrawal strategy when you’re retired. However, for a nice-to-have goal, such as your large vacation home, perhaps you don’t need the same urgency – consequently, with part of your portfolio, you might be able to take more risk in hopes of greater returns. And if you fall short, you can always go with Plan B – i.e., the smaller home or the rental experience. • Monitor your results. As you pursue your goals, whether must have or nice to have, you’ll want to check your results regularly. If you think you’re not making enough progress toward your desired goal, you may need to make adjustments. But don’t overreact to short-term swings in the financial markets or in the value of your portfolio, or take on an inappropriate amount of risk. When trying to reach your goals, you can alter your path, but it’s usually not a good idea to change directions altogether. The decisions involved in identifying, prioritizing and achieving your goals can be somewhat involved. But by following a well-designed process, you can help yourself get to where you want to go.
