From Me To You... During this quarantine phase of our lives we have been looking at the inside of our house more than we used to. I am sure this has happened to you too. After a few weeks, and a few too many home improvement shows, we decided that things could do with sprucing up. What did we decide to change? Well the lighting was original to the house, circa 2004, so that had to go. What followed was an intense internet search and voila, a box was delivered. Actually 5 boxes. The electrician was called and in a couple of weeks we had an updated lighting package. Next the adult daughter was moving into her own apartment so that meant furniture moving. It also meant a free room. We rearranged some things and voila, a new office! My desk (which was actually an old dining room table) is far too big for the new office space so I am ‘making do’ with my son’s desk for the moment. Due to the onset of online school in a few weeks I will be taking a trip to Ikea so that he can have his desk for his work, and I can get one that fits my needs too. During the move we took a close look at the walls and I thought, “You know, this house could do with a refresh. Let’s paint it!” Easy right?
of years. In fact it was so easy to paint that bathroom that I took my still wet brush and painted the kitchen island cabinets blue too. Beautiful!
Next on to painting the rest of the house. In the last 2 weeks we have completed the family room/kitchen, one bathroom and our office. It will be quite a project to complete the whole house especially if I keep getting side-tracked. It reminds me of the children’s book about giving a mouse a cookie, he is going to need a glass of milk to go with it. The tale goes in a circle ending up with the mouse being thirsty and wanting a glass of milk, then he needs a cookie to go with it... Happy Home Improvements everyone!

Off to Lowes we went and 7 paint samples came home with us. After staring at the samples and asking the opinion of everyone we could think of, a color was chosen. But before we could paint the walls, the cabinets needed our attention. We had painted our kitchen cabinets white a few years ago and they just needed a touch up. Our bathroom cabinets were a different story. 16 years of 4 small children pouring water on them and scribbling to their hearts content had left a mark, actually several marks. I chose a deep blue/grey for the bathrooms and having finished one bathroom I am very happy with my choice. Cabinet paint has come a long way in a couple Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

College Finances
For many students starting or returning to school this fall, the experience may be far different from what they envisioned last year. In response to COVID-19, a number of colleges and universities are temporarily moving to virtual learning models. At the same time, there are colleges and universities planning to reopen with new social distancing measures-some still determining exactly how to best proceed. Not only has COVID-19 been an obstacle for how you’ll physically go to college, but also a setback for how students and parents plan to pay for their education. So, what are some strategies to help you stay on track with your financial plan for college?
financial aid package in order to help you afford the cost of school. This may be especially beneficial if your finances have changed since you first applied.
3. Explore private student loans for bridging any funding gap. Given the rising expenses for education, there’s a chance the financial assistance you received from the federal student loan program, grants or scholarships isn’t enough to entirely cover your college costs. Thus, private student loans can help fill this funding gap. If you’re worried about getting approved for a private student loan, a co-signer could increase your chances. 4. Stay instate or take classes at a community college. In-state tuition is considerably less expensive than out-of-state tuition. You may also save on tuition and related costs by taking classes at a local community college before school begins or during school breaks. Just be sure to confirm before enrolling that the credits will transfer to the college or university of your choice.
5. Already have student loans? Consider refinancing or consolidating them. Many lenders will allow you to refinance and consolidate federal and private student loans together. Also if you’re graduating this fall or 1. Tally up all the costs of attendance. have parent PLUS loans, this strategy could help “Education costs will increasingly play a central you save on interest and get a lower monthly role in a student’s decision of when or where they payment. attend school,” said Aaron Aggerwal, senior vice president of credit cards and education lending at Navy Federal Credit Union. “As you solidify how much space is in your budget to pay for school, be sure to consider expenses beyond tuition, such as room and board, transportation, a computer, and textbooks. This will help you create a reasonable and realistic financial plan.” 2. Talk to your school’s financial aid office. If you previously submitted a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and need to alter it, contact your financial aid office. Telehealth
Following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, the adoption of telehealth services has been on the rise and people are turning to digital technology more than ever to address their personal health care needs without having to leave their homes. But while many have begun to embrace telehealth offerings as a new way to connect to care and address their personal health needs, myths surrounding what telehealth services are intended for and how they compare to in-office visits continue to prevail. To help determine how digital care can best meet health care needs during quarantine and beyond, here are the facts behind four common misconceptions about telehealth: MYTH #1: Telehealth is only for basic or urgent care needs. FACT: Telehealth can often be the first stop for preventive, primary care and other health and wellness needs. Patients can connect with a doctor or nurse practitioner to receive care for a range of acute, preventive and chronic care needs, including illness and injury, mental health services, and management of conditions like asthma, diabetes and more. Whether patients live in a rural area or simply want an easier way to manage their health, telehealth can adapt to their needs.
MYTH #2: There aren’t any telehealth providers in the area. FACT: Many trusted local and national health care systems provide telehealth services across the nation. Today, more than half of providers in the United States currently offer some form of telehealth service, according to an April 22, 2020 Merritt Hawkins survey, “Physician Practice Patterns Changing as a Result of COVID-19.” Additionally, recent government, health system and reimbursement policy changes have improved patient access to telehealth services and are encouraging use as a safe way to access care during the pandemic. In fact, locating telehealth providers is easier than ever before with platforms like Walgreens.com/ FindCareServices which helps patients access care when and how they need it from providers they know and trust. MYTH #3: Virtual care isn’t as good as in-person care. FACT: Telehealth services can offer high-quality, convenient access to care. Much like face-toface office visits, telehealth visits can facilitate a trusting, open dialogue with a doctor or nurse practitioner. Most providers have a webbased interface or mobile app, making it easy to log onto and use secure, quality video for consultations and to visually help communicate about injuries or conditions. Telehealth also reduces time spent in waiting rooms and commuting to appointments, putting more power in the hands of patients. It can be particularly valuable for enabling remote monitoring and regular check-ins for patients with chronic conditions. Telehealth is more accessible than ever as more providers evolve and adapt technologies to meet patient needs at a safe distance. But even as social distancing constrictions lift, digital wellness offerings will present greater flexibility and convenience in meeting individual health care needs.

School Resource Officers to Stay in Buckeye Schools School Resource Officers (SRO’s) have played a vital role in the lives of thousands of students, teachers, administrators and parents for many years. The role of the SRO is multi-faceted. The SRO model is based on a three-pronged concept of teacher, counselor and law enforcement officer. Having trained, certified peace officers on campus helps youth develop a positive image of law enforcement and is key in responding and preventing campus violence and crime. The Buckeye Police Department has SRO’s with the Buckeye Union High School District, Agua Fria Union High School District and The Odyssey Institute High School. The police department funds the officers in BUHSD. As for the other two districts, they have entered into an Intergovernmental Agreement with the City of Buckeye to provide SRO services. The cost, while it varies, is shared by the district and the City. The district cost is approximately $38,000 for the school year, the City pays the rest. It was not too long ago that parents, teachers and administrators were clamoring to get an SRO in every school possible. The tide has taken a dramatic turn as the community grapples with its relationship with law enforcement. School districts across the country, and as close to us
as Phoenix, have voted to end their contracts with cities who assigned officers to their schools. Recently, the issue was brought before the Agua Fria School Board, which in 3-2 vote, approved the continuation of the SRO program. Critics of the SRO Program fear discrimination against minority students. Some even believe the presence of SRO’s creates a school-toprison pipeline, whereby students involved in minor infractions end up incarcerated, with a disproportionate number of minorities being affected. Buckeye SRO’s work in collaboration with school administrators but do not get involved or influence student discipline. SRO’s do arrest students who threaten the safety of students and those on campus or engage in illegal activity, such as possession of weapons on campus or drug possession, where a zero- tolerance policy is followed. Buckeye SRO’s have enjoyed an excellent relationship with our schools, students, staff, parents and administrators. Those officers serving in schools are carefully selected, and provided effective and specialized training based on best practices of the National Association of School Resource Officers. Their number one priority is the safety of students, staff and all those on school campuses. Submitted by Donna Rossi Public Information Officer Buckeye Police Department

The Bug Guy Desert Hairy Scorpion, AKA the Giant Desert Scorpion. Hadrusus Arizonensis As summer hits its peak and the valley gets hotter, we start to see big scorpions averaging 4-6-inchs in length (Desert Hairy Scorpions). Their increase in activity generally corresponds with our monsoon season, starting in mid-July through October. They are generally dark brown to a light straw color with a tail approximately 1.25 times the length of its body. While the Desert Hairy Scorpion can grow up to 10-12 inches in length, that size is very uncommon. They are classified as an occasional home invader, meaning that they are opportunistic and are not intentionally entering your home. Ccurrent studies suggest that scorpion venom has two stages: 1) A pre-venom that acts as a very painful paralytic, and 2) The primary venom which is a neural toxin with a wide range of neural affects. Generally, most scorpion stings are not serious, however, call poison control at 1-800-222-1222 and they can answer questions in the event you or a family member is stung. From a pest control perspective, scorpions can be a challenging pest as their biology is unique in the insect world. They are not always moving and looking for food, which reduces the opportunity for them to encounter applied pesticides.
Here are a few good practices to follow to avoid getting stung by a scorpion: • Do not leave your shoes outside or in the garage. If you do always shake them out! • Do not store broken down boxes in your garage, they will provide a habitat for crickets, a food source that will bring scorpions! • Be careful when picking an object up off the ground. Never place your fingers under the edge to lift! • Do keep your landscape plants trimmed up at least 4-5 inches off the ground. This will reduce the habitat for bugs in general and can reduce the scorpion activity, too. Overall, the best approach to controlling scorpions is a comprehensive approach that addresses the habitat and reduces food availability. Positive Discipline
As a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, many parents staying at home with their children have undoubtedly run into more conflicts with them. Discipline helps to guide children toward positive behavior, promotes self-control, encourages children to think before acting and is not damaging to their self-esteem. Punishment, on the other hand, is negative – whether physical, verbal, withholding rewards or penalizing. Positive discipline teaches children rules and behaviors in a respectful, loving and considerate way. It requires thought, planning and patience from parents and caretakers, such as: •“No, don’t run inside!” becomes, “We will go outside soon and you can show me how fast you can run.” • “No, don’t throw the blocks!” becomes, “Let’s try building a castle and see what happens!” Use positive discipline to redirect your child’s behavior, and you validate the legitimacy of your

child’s desires and show you care and understand. Redirecting endorses your child’s right to choose.
Create a Positive Environment • Show the love; cuddle and hug your child! This is essential for normal social development. • Listen and answer as an equal – not as an instructor. This will help build your child’s selfesteem and foster respect. • Spend time with your child every day. Make time every day to drop everything and play with your child. Your child will realize they don’t need to have a temper tantrum to gain your attention. • Catch your child doing something good – praise and compliment! • Provide simple rules and state them in positive terms. • Demonstrate the behavior you want your child to adopt – actions speak louder than words. When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.
There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.”
provides. Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share. Perhaps the best quote about advertising in a recession came from Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. When asked, “What do you think about a recession?” he responded, “I thought about it and decided not to participate.” -----------------------------We at Estrella Publishing are open for business and here working overtime to support our clients and potential future clients with their marketing strategy. Call / text 623-594-9283 with any questions.
There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown. • The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. • Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times. • Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, can provide greater short-term sales growth, increases during a recession. • When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current and future sales. An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.” An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits. Another strategy used by marketers is using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. When the economy bounces back, regular pricing can return. Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

Cooking at home is not just about getting dinner on the table. Creating meals together benefits your family in many ways, well beyond helping ensure everyone in the household likes what they eat. Here are five reasons to involve your children in meal prep. 1. Kids learn a lot It’s amazing how many skills are involved in cooking: * Reading * Following directions * Using math for quantities and measurements * Discovering scientific processes in cooking and baking Cooking together also involves teamwork, communication and valuable life lessons like meal planning and budgeting. 2. Help others fight hunger Another meaningful life lesson is teaching kids about giving back to the community. By choosing ingredients with the Produce for Kids
logo in your grocery store’s produce department, you’ll help feed people in need. Produce for Kids has raised $7 million for Feeding America and other charities supporting children and families. 3. Establish healthy lifelong habits Choosing recipes featuring fresh produce boosts your family’s health while establishing good habits for life. 4. Cooking is creative Once your children have mastered cooking basics, let them be creative. Learning what flavors go together and increasing their knowledge of ingredients makes cooking about much more than following directions. Encourage kids to experiment with recipes or create their own. What they invent (with a little supervision) may surprise you! 5. Develop confidence Mastering cooking tasks helps your child develop feelings of competence. Consider your child’s age, and supervise for safety. Children’s abilities vary greatly, so start by allowing children to measure, stir or garnish - adding tasks as they get older and gain experience and skill. come see our large selection of outdoor accessories

Handwashing According to the CDC, regular handwashing is one of the most effective ways people can keep from getting sick - and to help protect others from viruses such as COVID-19. But for those with eczema, hands may become irritated when washed too vigorously, dried too harshly or not moisturized properly, and potentially exacerbate or trigger a flare, says Dr. Levenberg. That’s why it’s important to stick with a handwashing routine that will keep hands as clean - and healthy - as possible. Dr. Chudy Nduaka knows about this firsthand. Dr. Nduaka, who is Dermatology Team Leader, North America Medical Affairs at Pfizer Inc., has a 10-year-old daughter with eczema. Ever since she was little, she’s been instructed to care for her hands by washing, drying and moisturizing frequently, he says.
Because she’s so accustomed to the routine to care for her skin, Dr. Nduaka’s not worried about his daughter’s eczema right now, and neither is she. “She’s doing OK,” he says. Dr. Levenberg shared the following advice for people with eczema on how to help keep their hands clean and healthy. Use the right kind of cleanser People with eczema or other skin conditions should consider use of a gentle cleanser, which comes in bar and liquid form, says Dr. Levenberg. “Try to avoid certain ingredients, harsh detergents or fragrance,” he says. “Those can potentially irritate the skin, and these patients may be more susceptible to not only irritation, but an allergy from it as well.” He also recommends washing hands with lukewarm water, rather than hot or cold, to avoid further irritation. Dry but don’t over-dry Drying after every handwashing is important, because, according to the CDC, germs can transfer more easily to and from wet hands than from dry. Dr. Levenberg recommends people with skin conditions gently pat their hands dry using a clean towel, disposable paper towel, or air dry if available. He says, “It’s important to try not to over-dry your hands and make sure not to rub your hands vigorously with a paper or cloth towel in a harsh way that may traumatize the skin.” Always moisturize After light drying, immediately apply a moisturizer. Dr. Levenberg recommends products such as ointment or cream, which tend to be thicker and have better moisturizing properties. “Ointments and creams tend to be a little bit heavier than, for example, a lotion and may do a slightly better job to soften and seal in moisture in the skin,” he says.

Testing Hot – Update
Last January, I published an article written shortly after getting off the phone with a mother whose twenty-five-year-old son had tested “hot” for opioids. This mom was beginning to lose hope because he had been admitted into drug treatment centers multiple times. Update: He was admitted into a drug treatment center for his substance use disorder and released to a sober living facility. Found suitable employment within walking distance of his residence, received a steady paycheck, and was saving money for a car and insurance. Fastforward 7 months and BAM! He tested positive for opioid use…again. Now, kicked out of sober living, his situation continues to deteriorate. He currently lives in a high-risk neighborhood and continues to show signs of continued use—all the gains made over the past seven months gone in an instant.
I see this same scenario play out countless times. Not only with opioids and heroin, but other substances such as marijuana, alcohol, meth, and cocaine. Most find it mind-boggling. Why would someone who had turned their life in a positive direction choose to use drugs again? One could ask that person numerous questions and keep asking why, but that would only pile more shame, blame, and guilt on the individual. I guarantee you a person already knows they have a problem, and they will continue to beat themselves up mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically. I spoke to the person by phone and realized the addiction still had a firm grip on his thinking. As an addictions counselor and person who has lived a program of recovery for more than thirtyfive years, I see addiction as a living, breathing entity that does not want to die. It will do anything to survive and keep someone you love, trapped in the cycle of addiction. Understanding 20 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine
this is key to preventing relapse and breaking the cycle of addiction. Working a program of recovery is how someone with a substance use disorder can kill the addiction. Here are a few take-aways I have discovered over the years: • I have yet to meet anyone who planned on becoming addicted. • No one has immunity. • Addiction knows no boundaries. • Once a person is detoxed, they are no longer physically addicted. From this point on, they suffer from what is known as mental obsession (much of which is unconscious). People relapse due to mental obsession; this is why it is vital to work what we call a program of recovery. It has nothing to do with one’s will power. • Substance Use Disorder impacts the whole family. If you or someone you know is ready to take that first step to rid themselves of the nightmare of SUD (Substance Use Disorder), there is a lifeline listed below. Reach out. Make the call.
