From Me To You...

I’m back to baby proofing. At the grand old age of almost 50 my life has taken a U-turn and I am trying to stay ahead of any crazy thoughts that pop into the head of my 5 month old puppy.

Chew this! Pee here! What is that and how does it taste? Can I fit in this space? Why is everyone yelling at me?

So far we have removed all carpeting from the ground floor, boxed in all the outlets (not because he chews the wires but because when he runs past them he barrels into the plugs, bending the prongs that go into the walls), provided every chew toy known to man in an attempt to distract him from the table or chairs. Thrown away all the disembowelled and eviscerated toys we find every morning, and resorted to containing him in a play pen most of the time. That play pen has been the best thing we have bought in years.

I had no idea of my anxiety level until he was safely contained and it dropped. Finally I didn’t have to worry about stepping in pee or something worse!

Then there were the stomach issues. He is a lab and wants to eat all the time. All. The. Time.

Even when he has finished his food he looks at me like I am starving him. Consequently I was overfeeding him. He didn’t get overweight or sick it just went right through him. Not knowing the cause of his stomach issues I took him to the vet, had samples tested for parasites and bacteria.

Put him on antibiotics. Changed his food.

Changed his food again. Fed him a bland diet of rice and eggs. Changed his food again. Then it finally occurred to me that I should just give him less. Surprise! It worked. He still finishes his food in less time than it takes me to put the scoop away and looks at me like I am the worst mother in the world, but 4 children in I can withstand that.

In order to slow him down I bought him a puzzle toy to put the food in. They come in stages, the first one involves putting the food under pegs Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

which he has to lift out to get to the food. Took him 10 minutes the first time then 20 seconds the next. Stage 2 involves hidden compartments and spinning covers. More entertaining for us but considerably louder as he scrabbles at the plastic to get to the food. That one he has down to less than a minute. I am now looking at one that is basically a very deep shag rug where you push the food into it and he has to forage to find it. Could be interesting. Could be destroyed in a couple of days too.

As I watch him solve these puzzles and meet all these challenges I wonder, what am I training him for? In the attempt to slow him down physically I am speeding him up mentally. That is the next stage I have to look forward to, finding him gainful employment so he can use his powers for good instead of evil. Wish me luck!

Cleaning Tips You wipe down the counters, clean the floor and run the dishwasher regularly. Your kitchen appears clean on the surface, but there’s probably a lot that could use a refresh. It’s time to pay attention to frequently used but often forgotten items in your kitchen. Make sure to include these five kitchen items on the next round of cleaning so you get the sparkling kitchen you deserve.

Dishwasher To thoroughly clean your dishwasher, start by removing the filter and cleaning it out. Then fill a coffee cup with white vinegar and put it on the top rack and run on the hot cycle to remove soap scum and other buildup. Try to do this monthly for a sparkling clean dishwasher that works great.

Use Keurig Rinse Pods once a week to rinse away old coffee oils and residue, or use any time after brewing a flavored beverage to reduce flavor carry-over between brews.

2. Every 2 months, replace your Keurig Water Filter Cartridge to help remove chlorine, calcium and other impurities from water to improve the taste and quality of beverages.

3. Every 3 months, use Keurig Descaling Solution to safely and effectively remove mineral buildup from inside your brewer.

Microwave Food steams, spurts and splatters in a microwave every day, and even if it appears visually clean, there’s probably a lot of grime on the inside walls. Fill a microwave-safe bowl with one cup water and then slice a lemon in half. Squeeze the lemon in the water and then add the halves.

Microwave for 3 minutes and then let sit for 5 so the steam can penetrate the buildup. Finally, open the microwave, remove the bowl and easily wipe away grime with a washcloth.

Under appliances Just because you don’t look there doesn’t mean the dirt and dust goes away. It’s time to clean appliances, particularly the refrigerator where food, dust and dirt often collect and clog up the coils. Carefully pull appliances out and clean well underneath. Start by vacuuming and then wipe down with soapy water. You should also look at the back of appliances and wipe off to remove dust and other grime. If the appliance has an air vent, make sure to vacuum it well to help it continue to run efficiently.

Kitchen knobs and handles Start by wiping all knobs down with disinfectant wipes. For grimy buildup, use hot water with a touch of dish soap and wipe down with a rag to break down grime.

The kitchen is the heart of the home and deserves a good clean.

Furry Friends Hot Paws! Sidewalk, patio, and sand surfaces can not only burn your dog’s paws, but also can increase body temperature and lead to overheating. Dogs do not sweat; they cool themselves primarily through panting. Press your hand onto surfaces for 30 seconds to test them before allowing your dog to walk on them. If it is painful for you, it will be painful for your dog.

Walk your dog in the morning and at night when outdoor surfaces are coolest, or try one of the many grassy parks here in Verrado.

Buckeye 411 Social Media Puts Police in the Palm of Your Hand

Love it. Hate it. Rely on it. Addicted to it.

Regardless of which of those statements, if any, apply to you, the bottom line is social media is here to stay.

It is highly likely that social media has had an impact on your life. Perhaps it has put you in touch with a long lost relative or friend. Maybe a post or tweet alerted you to a road closure and saved you time on your commute.

The numbers of people on social media are staggering. The latest statistics from the Pew Research Center indicate 69% of adults in the United States use Facebook, which is roughly seven-out-of-ten adults. While younger adults are included in that statistic, those between the ages of 18 to 24 prefer Instagram. The same Pew Research Center survey shows 75% in that age group are active on Instagram.

The Buckeye Police Department focuses on building ties and working closely with members of the community. If our community is on social media, which they are, it makes complete sense that the Buckeye Police Department must be active on social media. In essence, social media has become an extension of our community policing strategy.

Social media allows us to highlight the great works of the department and share the “bad news” affecting our community. Now more than ever, the public demands transparency from their police agencies. Social media provides us a forum to release accurate information as soon as it is possible. When the public hears directly from the police department, it mitigates the possibility of misinformation circulating by word of mouth or by the media.

Buckeye PD’s most successful platform is Nextdoor, with members representing 43% of households in the city. Nextdoor proves to be an excellent way to blanket the entire city with a message or target specific neighborhoods with information pertinent to an isolated incident or area.

We also enjoy a large audience on Facebook, with more than 16,000 followers. BPD uses this platform to post pictures and videos of many of our community involvements. However, is it also a great platform to interact with the community.

After all, it is called “social” media. So, we try to be social.

The department is also on Instagram, Twitter, Nixle and most recently, BPD joined Neighbors

by Ring.

8. LAST, show your kids extra LOVE & SUPPORT. Going back to school is stressful for them too!

Points to Consider When Hiring a Pest Management Professional (PMP) Make sure you are hiring an applicator who meets all your state’s certification and licensing requirements. Certified applicators have specialized training in the safe handling of pesticides.

• Avoid selecting a PMP based on service price.

• Ask your friends or co-workers who they use.

• Ask how much experience the PMP has in handling your type of pest problem.

• Ask what the initial treatment and ongoing management plan will be in a written service agreement • Contact the appropriate regulatory agency to ensure that the PMP is licensed and certified.

• Ask the company if it is a member of its state and/or national pest control association.

• Contact organizations such as the BBB, or the EPA to determine if complaints have been filed against the company.

• Ask for a list of references and contact several to find out if they were satisfied.

• Ask if the PMP is insured and bonded, and whether the work is guaranteed.

• Request a copy of the PMP’s pest control license.

• Request copies of the labels of pesticides that will be used.

• Ask what safety precautions will be taken by the PMP before, during, and after any

application of pesticides.

• Ask what safety precautions should be taken by you before, during, and after any application of pesticides.

• Always check the identification and license of the employee who arrives at your house.

• Want to do pest control as part of a package deal, such as general home repair or tree trimming.

• Don’t have a listed/working telephone number.

• Sell services door-to-door.

Back in a Routine Back-to-school season is here and your child is probably getting excited about shopping for new supplies and being able to see their school friends. And, while education is an essential part of growing up, other factors like waking up earlier in the morning and completing tasks are also important, as they help develop an organized lifestyle and further a child’s growth.

Below are some tips on developing a routine for your child: ● Post a list of nighttime and morning to-dos on your child’s bedroom door or on the kitchen refrigerator as daily guidelines for your children. ● Have a daily to-do list posted in an area your child will see each day. ● Choose an area in the home, such as by the front door, to store your child’s school bag and any supplies he or she may need for school (e.g., art projects, thank-you notes/gifts for teachers).

Money Matters As a business owner, you can’t afford can’t afford not to create a retirement plan for yourself.

Of course, you might think that, one day, you’ll simply sell your business and live off the proceeds. But selling a business isn’t always simple, and there’s no guarantee you’ll receive enough to pay for a comfortable retirement – which is why you should strongly consider creating a retirement plan now.

Here are some of the most widely used plans: • SEP-IRA: You can contribute up to 25 percent of your compensation — as much as $56,000 in 2019 — to a SEP-IRA. Your contributions are tax deductible and your earnings grow tax-deferred until withdrawn. This plan offers you significant flexibility in making contributions for yourself and your employees.

• SIMPLE IRA: In 2019, you can put in up to $13,000 — or $16,000 if you’re 50 or older — to a SIMPLE IRA. As is the case with the SEP-IRA, your earnings grow tax deferred. You can match your employees’ contributions dollar for dollar, up to 3 percent of compensation. If you work

for yourself, you can combine employee and employer contributions, so if you use the 3 percent matching rule, and you earn enough to fully match employee contributions, you can put in up to $26,000 per year (or $32,000 if you’re 50 or older). Contributions to your employees are tax deductible.

• “Owner-only” 401(k) plan: If you have no employees other than your spouse, you can establish an “owner-only” 401(k) plan, which functions similarly to a 401(k) plan offered by a large employer. Between salary deferral and profit sharing, you can contribute up to $56,000, in pre-tax dollars, to your owner-only 401(k), or $62,000 if you’re 50 or older. Like a SEP-IRA and SIMPLE IRA, a 401(k) provides the potential to accumulate tax-deferred earnings.

Any one of the plans mentioned above can help you build some of the resources you’ll need to enjoy the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned.

To select an appropriate plan, you may want to consult with your tax and financial advisors.In any case, don’t wait too long. When you reach that day when you’re a “former” business owner, you’ll want to be prepared.

School Stress With a new school year beginning, what words tend to bring chaos, stress and drama? If you said, mornings, kids and getting ready for school, you nailed it. The new school year is the perfect opportunity for integrating new behaviors into the family lifestyle that will reduce a lot of the morning chaos. Develop these habits now and you will see big dividends for both you and your child over the coming years; not to mention they will develop a very important life skill. Here are some quick tips to get you started.

• Designate a specific place where everything goes. We’ll call it a “school staging area.”

• Always put your bookbag, books and notepad in the same place.

• Always put your homework in the same place.

• Create a designated study/homework area.

• Pay special attention to lighting, noise and distractions.

• The more personalize the space is, the more ownership your child will have.

• Develop the habit of planning tomorrow the night before.

• Know what you are going to wear the night before. Set it out if possible.

• Know what you have to do tomorrow.

What commitments do you have? What assignments are due?

• Review tomorrow in your mind just before you fall asleep and see yourself being successful

in everything you do.

• Develop the habit of using a daily planner.

• Most schools have Agendas for each student. Learn to use this great tool or use a phone app for homework and assignments.

Bonus Tips from area parents: • We check our kid’s assignment book as soon as we walk in the door to plan for any additional time. This also lets our children know homework is important.

• We have our children do homework at a specific time each night. The kids get in the habit, but we as parents also get in the habit of making sure it is done.

• We use a shared calendar. That way everyone knows who has to be where and who needs picked up when.

A bit of persistence on our part will go a long way.

Remember, one of the last areas of the brain to develop is that of organization and decision making. Look for progress rather than perfection.

Planning a party doesn’t have to be difficult.

Instead of agonizing over appetizers, opt for serving delicious wine with a charcuterie board - a variety of cured meats, cheeses and condiments that can range from simple to sophisticated. Even a fairly basic spread can look elegant, while providing your guests with inviting, impressive flavor combinations.

Todd Knoll, executive chef at Jordan Vineyard & Winery, offers expert tips on combining select cured meats and cheeses with balanced wines to bring out the best in a charcuterie board.

To keep it simple, offer one red and one white.

Choose wines to complement a range of flavors and seasonings in meats and cheeses, so you can offer an interesting variety to tempt your guests.

For a charcuterie board that is as Instagrammable as it is edible, provide a variety of contrasting flavors and textures, Knoll advises.

This means choosing harder, salty and spicy

cured meats, such as salami. Then add softer salted meats, such as thinly sliced prosciutto, for textural and flavor contrast. Finally, provide a creamy pate, terrine or rillette that guests can spread on bread or crackers.

Offer guests a choice of flavors and textures that also complement the wine. Sheep’s milk cheeses, such as Roquefort, Manchego and Pecorino Romano, pair well with Cabernet Sauvignon, particularly cheeses that have been aged at least six months for complexity and nutty flavor. Firmer, more aged cow’s milk cheeses, such as Gouda and cloth-bound Cheddar, will complement a variety of Cabernet Sauvignon styles.

A creamy Camembert is a good match with Chardonnay, as is Brie and other soft cheeses, according to Knoll. Chardonnay can also be paired successfully with creamy goat cheeses.

Champagne complements washed rind cheeses such as Taleggio, Limburger and Epoisses, as its acidity cuts through the richness of these more pungent cheeses.

A fabulous charcuterie board is not complete without an array of flavorful condiments. Source good mustard like whole grain Dijon, Knoll advises, plus quince paste or pear mostarda. Add olives, fresh or dried fruit, nuts or pickles to taste, plus fresh, warmed crusty bread or crackers.
