From Me To You... I have come to the conclusion that I live in a very interesting state. Why? Because nearly everyone here is a transplant. There are very few people born and bred in Arizona. It is a destination state - a place to retire to, certainly, but also a place where the real estate is affordable and the cost of living is comparatively low. A place people migrate to because of the weather at home and the weather here.

Personally I will never forget my last winter in NY when the wind chill had our temperature at minus 17 degrees Fahrenheit. As I shovelled the snow off our sidewalk at 9 months pregnant, (I did this because I discovered that I am liable for accidents happening on the sidewalk in front of our house!) I decided then and there that it would be my last year doing so. So here we are in this sunny climate, separated form our extended family. I am used to this way of life, having immigrated from the UK at 21, but my husband and most people here are not. It leaves you with a feeling of being slightly adrift. There is no anchor to stabilize you, or hold you back. Suddenly the question of “Whose house do we go to for Thanksgiving?” or “Why does Aunt Doris always get Passover/Easter?” becomes moot. Now we ask, “What do you want to do this holiday?” Or my favorite, “Where are we making reservations this year?” Sometimes we open our home to friends and family who are also without a destination, sometimes it is just us.

older I am more circumspect about choosing those friends. People no longer become my companion because our children are the same age, or do the same extracurricular activity. That is a similarity of circumstance and I have found that it is not a good indicator of folk who share your values and goals. Being in a group of people who live a different lifestyle is never comfortable. So over time my circle has ebbed and flowed into a solid core of people I love. I can truly say that they are the family I choose, not the ones given to me, and I am content. Some of them have children and some do not. Some own their own businesses, some work for ‘the man’ and a lucky few have retired. The one thing they all have in common is me and I am thankful for them. Last month a longtime friend who had moved out of state was visiting for my daughter’s wedding, and as she left something she said struck me profoundly. She said that she could see I was surrounded by people who cared for me and that she was glad. She could relax knowing that even though she was no longer around the corner, I had people who would, and did, step up to fill the void she left. Friends who always help when I need it, whether I ask or not. These friends have become my family and I am so grateful I have found them and they have found me.

The downside to the situation, I have found, is that there is no tribe who have to be there when you call. No sister-in-law who will grudgingly watch the kids if you have an emergency, or a gaggle of cousins for the kids to play with and grow up with and build family memories with. That is a distinct disadvantage. As time goes by we make connections, build our own tribe if you like. I have found that as I get 4 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

On Our Cover

The Hiking Club of Verrado began in the fall of 2015 with a hike between 4 ladies to do the Scar in Verrado, it was suggested to create a Hiking Club and to go on a regular basis. Lila Scott (moved to Denver) and Carole Thomson blended 2 small clubs to create The Hiking Club of Verrado which currently has 190 members and growing daily. The leadership team of Carole Thomson, John Steiner, and Pam Katz have led 100’s of hikes in Verrado, Skyline, Estrella, White Tanks, Spur Cross Ranch, Lake Pleasant, Peoria and many more ranges since 2016. The new Leaders joining for the fall season are Greg Duncanson, a retired firefighter, and Mary Ann Paul, an avid hiker from Alaska, who has participated weekly in the hiking group for 17 years named “Slothful Sisters in Reform” which now has equal numbers of men as women.

Contact Colleen at learncpr@crosslifeline.com for her current location and offerings. A monthly schedule sent to the members via email and on our Facebook Page includes the range, trail, difficulty, mileage, meeting and driving directions as well as a short synopsis for the hike. It is at the discretion of the membership which hikes will fit their activity level and to participate in. A picture gallery and fitbit or garmin breakdown of the hike are posted on the Facebook page, we have captured some amazing scenery, plants, petroglyphs, mountain ranges, but mostly a lot of smiles and laughter. The leader will take a departure picture of the group, eager and excited to explore the new trail. Once a year the Hiking Club joins The Lost Creek Trail Club to do maintenance of our local trails, a great friendship has blossomed between the two clubs for the shared usage of the trails. You may join on Facebook or send an email to carolethomson2@gmail.com, your membership will be approved when we receive your email, address, phone #, emergency contact and their phone #. We have had an incredible 3 year run, we operate from October to April where we currently offer 4 Thursday hikes and 2 weekend hikes. Happy Hiking! Submitted by Carole Thomson, Verrado Resident and Hiker

All Leaders must be First Aid and CPR and AED trained and they carry an emergency contact list for each hike, and a first aid kit. The Hiking Club offers a yearly First Aid, CPR, and AED program at The Center on Main in January on even years and March on odd years to the Club and to the Verrado Residents. The course certification is by Colleen Alexy of Cross Lifeline Training Inc. for a cost of $25, please consider training up to save a life as it may be your family or your neighbor. 6 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

Entertaining

As you prepare to entertain during these long, lazy days of summer, it’s convenient to keep on hand easy-to-prepare refreshments your guests can snack on. Consider the following suggestions for lightning-fast, ultra-easy, fresh-tasting treats that can help you welcome visitors at a moment’s notice. 1. Refreshing blender drinks: Stockpile a selection of frozen juices and fruits so you can blend up icy-cold cocktails - either the adult or kiddie versions - on demand. When serving, don’t forget the fruit garnishes and little umbrellas. 2. Fresh guacamole and chips: Whipping up everyone’s favorite avocado dip is nearly effortless when you keep on hand Simply Organic’s Guacamole Mixes. The flavorful, liquid-based mixes, available in spicy or regular

varieties, come in handy packets so you need only add two ripe, peeled, pitted avocados (organic is best) and break open a bag of tortilla chips to create a fresh, fun and wholesome snack. You get all the flavor, texture and tang without taking on all the work. 3. Mediterranean pita dip: Stock your vegetable drawer and spice cabinet with organic ingredients for this hearty, cool and flavorful dip: hummus, red bell pepper, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, black olives, artichokes, feta cheese, oregano, onion powder and garlic powder. When guests arrive, spread the hummus in a casserole dish, sprinkle on the seasonings, layer the vegetables, then top your colorful creation with the cheese. 4. Divine deviled eggs: When you keep hardboiled eggs on hand, whipping up these classic favorites only takes a few minutes. Remove the shells, halve the eggs and mash up the yolks with mayonnaise, mustard, vinegar, pickle relish, salt and/or pepper to taste. If desired, you can add even more flavor by stirring in hot sauce, bacon bits, blue cheese, chives, pickles, mango chutney, pesto, pickled okra or crumbled potato chips. Spoon or swirl the yolk mixture back into the half-eggs and serve. 5. Bountiful bruschetta: Slice a crusty baguette, brush it with olive oil and toast the slices under your broiler. Top the slices with a mixture of chopped tomatoes, basil leaves, onion and garlic, mixing in olive oil, salt and pepper and grated Parmesan cheese to taste. Sprinkle with balsamic reduction and serve.

Home Sweet Home Tips and Steps for Purchasing a Home

Step No. 1: Choose a real estate agent - The first step in the home-buying process is to find an agent you feel comfortable working with. When making this choice take into account an agent who communicates, has your best interest at heart, and puts your needs first. Step No. 2: Find a lender - Once you’ve chosen a real estate agent, ask them to recommend lenders, either an organization or a person who will lend you money so you can buy your home. Step No 3: Clean up your credit - Now that you have a great lender, you can ask for guidance on any credit score issues you may be facing. Step No. 4: Apply for mortgage pre-approval - A lender will help you determine exactly what you can afford, and which houses you should be considering. Step No. 5: Create a home wish list - Once you know what your purchasing power is, talk with your real estate agent about your ideal home. Come up with a few “musts,” as well as “wants” you’d be willing to compromise on.

Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

Step No. 6: Search the listings - When you begin touring homes with your agent, take along a notepad and jot down your thoughts as you approach each home. Step No. 7: Make an Offer – Once you have identified the home you want, your real estate agent will write up the offer you are comfortable with and guide you through every step. Step No. 8: Get a final mortgage approval - Once your offer to purchase is accepted, you’ll work with your lender to get final approval for your home purchase. Step No. 9: Do your due diligence – This process usually includes having a home inspection, to see if there are any issues with the home that you will want corrected by the seller. Step No. 10: Attend the closing - Once all of the steps above are completed, you’ll be on your way to the closing table. Once the documents have been signed and the transfer has been recorded with the county, you will be clear to move into your new home! Submitted by Laurie Adams, Real Estate Agent, Verrado Realty

The Doctor Is In Slow Intestinal Conveyor Belts

Whenever someone experiences a concussion, medical attention has historically been focused on the symptoms immediately attributable to the impairment of brain function. Physicians and trainers will conduct a variety of tests that center around balance, cognition, headaches, and dizziness. Their evaluation of the injury is a “shoulders up” perspective. But symptoms from brain injury can result in many other symptoms that occur from the “shoulders down”. Just think of common stroke damage, there is often impairment of movement down in the arms or legs. The same is true when your brain is injured from a common concussion. One of the most common “shoulders down” symptoms that occur from a brain injury is decreased forward propulsion of the intestinal tract. Think of the intestinal tract as a conveyor belt and it if does not move properly then problems occur. If the stomach does not empty acid into the small intestine, you experience heartburn or reflux. If the small intestine does not push its contents forward, you experience bloating and cramping. If the cramping is bad enough, this is called irritable bowel syndrome or IBS. And if the colon does not push its contents forward, you experience constipation.

12 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

the body.

These symptoms all are a consequence of your autonomic nervous system not working correctly. The autonomic nervous system is the portion of the nervous system that also regulates and controls all physiology function within

Autonomic dysfunction may occur because of unrepaired physical, emotional, or inflammatory damage due to a chronic inflammatory state called inflamm-aging which impairs our natural repair process. Adding to symptoms are intestinal bacteria who communicate with the ANS and also instruct the ANS to slow the intestinal conveyor belt. This is why a change in diet (what you feed your bacteria) can improve or worsen constipation, bloating, or heartburn. The next time you experience “shoulders down” symptoms be aware that the underlying cause may be from “shoulders up” incomplete repair of your ANS from past concussions or trauma that did not heal due to inflamm-aging. Fortunately, autonomic dysfunction is now reversible. © 2018. Nemechek Consultative Medicine. All Rights Reserved.

For upcoming details, please visit www.CommuityPaws.org. Did you know… August 15th is National “Check the Chip Day.” Microchips greatly increase the chances that pets will be happily reunited with their families. However, a microchip only works if its registration is up-to-date. According to the AVMA, 1 in 3 family pets will get lost, yet only about 6 in 10 are actually micro-chipped. Microchipped dogs are more than twice as likely to be returned to their owners. Please check your pet’s registration info to ensure it is accurate. If your pet is not micro-chipped, please schedule an appointment with your local vet to do so today. Submitted by Kristin Robinson, of Community Paws, Verrado resident

DIY Projects

Whether your plans include renovating one room, a floor or your entire home, there’s no denying that a renovation project greatly increases the scope of the work to be done - and the expense. And because of that, it’s incredibly important to have your entire plan laid out before you begin. After all, the last thing you want to do is renovate your latest renovation. To be sure you’re ready for the renovation project of your dreams this season, apply the tips below. * Finalize your goals. The largest projects are more successful when they are planned down to the finest details and that includes getting very specific about your goals. Don’t settle for a goal of simply improving your home. Decide if you’re trying to up the resale value, add more space, create a hobby area or finally build the bathroom you deserve. * Determine if you need to update/replace core systems. Your air conditioning unit, water softener and furnace are all vital components in your home and it’s easy to take the work they do

every day for granted. However, these systems eventually need replacement as well, and your home renovation could be the perfect time to tackle this task. * Set your budget. Many homeowners have no idea what a renovation project will cost and even if they do, unexpected expenses can appear very quickly. If you are working with a contractor, they should be able to give you a fairly accurate estimation of how much your project will cost. However, it’s still a good idea to determine what your absolute spending ceiling is for the project and not go above it. This means making sure you budget in some extra space below this mark to allot for unexpected expenses. * Organize your calendar. Delays during a renovation project will cost you time and money, so it pays to eliminate them when possible. Do you plan to remain in your home during the project? Are there any seasonal plans - like a family vacation - that could interfere with the progress? Understand these potential hazards early and you can plan for ways to minimize them. * Know what you can do and, more importantly, what you can’t. When you move from a home improvement project to a renovation, you’re also probably moving from DIY to hiring an expert. Tackle what you can yourself - including buying materials for the project, which will save you the contractor’s mark-up - but leave the things you don’t know how to do in the hands of the professionals. Doing so will make sure that you’re happier with the result and that you don’t have to pay someone to fix your mistakes. Start your project today No matter your motivation for starting a home renovation, it’s easy to be excited about the result. Take your time, plan your process using the tips above, and be ready for any hurdles that come your way, and that result will be all the more satisfying.

#VeryVerrado As a Mom of 3, back to school can be chaotic. School supply shopping, new clothes, meet the teacher & a new schedule! The “back to school” season has parents comparing themselves, which is overwhelming. Kids want the latest styles, best hydro flask & can’t decide between vans or converse. As parents, we try to find the best deals to pay for it. More stress, during a stressful time of year! One perk in VERRADO is Facebook groups! Neighbors sell or give away unused or gently used items that kids need. Look at these groups online: V-town Residents Only & Buy Nothing Verrado.

These are some other ways to beat the BUSY Back to School Chaos: • Order Must-Haves Online: Amazon Prime offers free shipping! • Reevaluate what kids can do or how they can contribute. New chores or responsibilities? What they can do now that their older to ease stress. • Devise a Routine that everyone can stick to & do it as a family. Kids help more when they are part of the discussion. • Over the Weekend, Meal Prep! No time? Check out these delivered meals: Hello Fresh, Sun Basket & Home Chef. • Get ALL the Forms & sign-ups done ASAP. Stack them up & go through them at once, much easier! • Resist the Temptation to over schedule your family. Be choosy about the commitments you make outside of work & school. Over tired kids & parents don’t mix.

• Start with Great Communication, with your kids & teachers/school. Kids give us one word answers, but take the time to dig deeper, you may learn things you never knew. Best time to converse is in the car or walking. When a child is not face-to-face with you, they share more. Eye contact is intimidating to kids. Ease the stress by connecting on their level. If you want to know what is going on at school or why they never bring homework home and your child doesn’t share, ASK the teachers! Teachers love parents that connect with them! An amazing tool the school provides is PARENTVUE. Ask the school for your login & you will have everything at your fingertips, 24-7, i.e. attendance, classes, contacts, grades & assignments. USE IT! • LAST, kids need extra LOVE and SUPPORT! Going back to school is stressful for kids too! Many new things in a part of their life that they have to navigate without you. Support them at home. As if being a parent isn’t hard enough! I hope a few of these tips may ease the stress & everyone can start the school year on a positive note. Pay attention to what is going on with your children. What you think would never happen, does & when you think that it would never be your kid, it is. Seek advice from someone that has been down that road before. When you think your alone and “this has never happened to anyone,” your wrong! Remember, in the big scheme of things, it’s a bump in the road, AND never forget to stop and smell the roses OR grab a drink! Submitted by Tiffany Topie, of West USA Realty, Verrado resident

I’m sure you’ve heard about the Opioid epidemic. Yes, it’s real and teens and adults are dying in Buckeye as a result. The truth is there have been teen deaths related to opioids and prescription drugs in our area but we do not hear about it because they are minors. Thus, no information is released. Yet kids are dying. Educating the community regarding opioids can make an immediate difference and save lives. The Way Out West Coalition feels it’s time to Get in the Way, To Say Something, To Do Something. It is a call to action and we invite you take an hour to be part of a Community Conversation “Saving Lives in Buckeye” on Thursday, August 9, 2018, from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. at The Center on Main in Verrado. This is a conversation about keeping kids safe and how to prepare them to respond positively to the negative influences that they face on a daily basis.

and other drugs there is usually a progression of use that leads to addiction. With teens, the normal timeline for crossing that invisible line is dramatically accelerated; usually 2 – 3 months. However, teen addiction to opioids; we’re talking two weeks or less. The WOW Coalition is a group of concerned community leaders and members working to reduce underage drinking, teen marijuana use, and prescription drug abuse in the city of Buckeye. We know that community awareness and education is one of the most important keys to reducing youth substance use. Our goal is to make it easier for everyone by understanding the power and dangers associated with opioids and how to put safeguards in place.

The WOW Coalition promotes protective factors that keep kids safe and successful and how to avoid risk factors that greatly increase the possibility of high risk behaviors leading to school failure, drug and alcohol use, mental health issues, suicide, and a lifetime of struggle as an adult. We also believes our job as parents If you are a parent, you need to know this is to help our kids do adolescence well. We know that successful adolescence translates information no matter who your kid is. No one is immune from opioid addiction because it into an adulthood that is easier and more does not follow the “normal” path to addiction successful. Over 90% of those who have entered as most understand it. With alcohol, marijuana treatment for substance abuse started using as an adolescent. This statistic Bambinos Bilingual Montessori Preschool is directly connected to teen brain development which we Where Play . . . . . . . . Bone Health

As people age, they become more likely to develop osteoporosis, a disease that occurs when bones lose density and mass, which can cause them to be brittle, weak and easily broken. Dr. Rhonda Randall, chief medical officer for UnitedHealthcare Retiree Solutions, answers questions about osteoporosis. How common is osteoporosis? An estimated 54 million Americans have osteoporosis or low bone mass, according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF). Studies suggest that approximately half of women and a quarter of men age 50 and older will break a bone due to osteoporosis. It is responsible for 2 million broken bones and 75,000 deaths every year. Osteoporotic bone breaks most often occur in the hip, spine or wrist, but other bones can break too. Beyond significant, often permanent pain, these fractures can have many other consequences, including frailty and limited mobility, complications

related to the broken bone or the surgery to repair it, and the necessity of long-term care. How is it diagnosed? Talking to your doctor will help ensure you get the test that may be needed to correctly diagnosis osteoporosis, which may be a simple bone mineral density (BMD) test. BMD tests can identify osteoporosis before a broken bone occurs and measure your response to treatment. Should I get tested? The NOF recommends BMD tests for women age 65 or older and men age 70 or older. Osteoporosis is more common in women than men, and more common after menopause, so women should begin talking to their doctor about osteoporosis before menopause. Anyone with several risk factors - controllable and uncontrollable - should also discuss it at a younger age than the general guidelines. There is no one single way to ensure healthy bones, but there are many great habits that can put you on the right path. Incorporate enough calcium and vitamin D in your diet; avoid smoking and drinking; maintain a regular exercise routine and take steps to minimize your risk of falls.

The Bug Guy

Its August here in the west valley and that means school is starting. Make sure that you adjust to the school zones being active. Let’s keep our kid’s safety in mind during the school year, drive responsibly. If you choose to disregard school zones, the minimum fine is $267.40 - and that is just the minimum! So, lets avoid a costly ticket or worse and pay attention, you could save a child’s life! Information retrieved from https://www. violationinfo.com/azphx/html/info.htm Bugs, as our monsoon season continues we can expect to see an uptick in the following insects, Crickets, Scorpions, Ants and more Ants, Mosquitoes, Earwigs, Sow bugs, Roaches and Termites!

monsoon season, with the ground holding more moisture termites will be more active and more likely to attack your home. Rodent activity can also increase during our rainy season, keep an eye out for damage to your outdoor furniture, chewed cushions is a common indicator of a rodent problem. Finding shiny objects under your outdoor furniture can be an indicator of a pack rat nest. Mosquito activity is picking up! What can you do around your home? Make sure that you are not allowing standing water in outdoor plants, wheelbarrows, unused pots, or anything that can hold water, tip them over and empty them. Mosquitoes can breed in as little as a ¼ inch of standing water, and at our temps can reach maturity with 48-72 hours! That’s when they bite! Mosquitoes can also transmit multiple diseases with their bite, so let’s make sure that we don’t allow standing water! Information provided by Larry Cash Estrella Mountain Pest Control

Monsoon season is here, so let’s keep your landscape maintained up off the ground, this will reduce the harborage available and bugs will have less places to hide around your yard. This is also the time of year that we see the occasional roach in our homes, don’t panic, its just a water box roach getting flooded out of the irrigation box it lives in. All manner of bugs can be displaced during the rainy season, most of them are very happy outside! Termite activity really picks up during our

Money Matters One day “back-to-school” will mean “off to college” for your children. Will you be financially prepared to help your kids cope with the costs of higher education?

For the 2017-18 academic year, college costs were, on average, nearly $21,000 for in-state students at four-year, public schools and nearly $47,000 for students attending private colleges or universities. And you can probably expect even bigger price tags in the years to come. To help prepare for these costs, you might want to consider putting your money in a 529 education savings plan. All withdrawals are free from federal income taxes as long as the beneficiary uses the money for qualified college, trade school or graduate school expenses. By starting your 529 plan early, when your children are just a few years old, the investments within the plan have more time for potential growth. Plus, you can make smaller contributions each year, rather than come up with big lump sums later on.

A 529 plan is not the only educationsavings tool you can use. Your children may be eligible for various forms of financial aid. Some types of aid depend on your family’s income, but others, such as merit-based scholarships, are open to everyone. But you don’t have to wait until you get an offer from a school’s financial aid office – you can explore some opportunities on your own. Many local and national civic and religious groups offer scholarships to promising young people, and your own employer may even provide some types of grants or assistance. Consider sending your child to a local community college for two years to get many of the “general” requirements out of the way before transferring to a four-year school for a bachelor’s degree. Community colleges are typically quite affordable, and many of them offer high-quality programs. A college degree is costly, but many people feel it’s still a great investment in their children’s future. And by taking the appropriate steps, you can help launch that investment.
