From Me To You...

As a child summertime was full of endless possibilities. Playing with friends, reading, going on long family walks, visiting relatives, vacationing, sleeping in, and just relaxing. As a parent it seems to be full of finding things to do with the kids. Summer camps, activities, swimming, travel, more swimming, organizing school supplies for next year, day trips, museums, and more swimming. Also in Arizona the importance of staying cool either at home or anytime we have to leave the house is at the top of the list - hence all the swimming.

This year my summer is being dubbed “The Summer of Moving Out” and with 3 kids going on to college or the start of their own independent lives, we have a busy time ahead.

As I write this I am in Tennessee with one kid (ahem adult), buying furniture and helping her set up her life here. There are so many things to help her organize that it sometimes makes my head spin, I really think moving from state to state is more complicated than moving to America here from abroad.

Once this one is settled, it is on to the next location for a college drop off. I am looking forward to that one because of the weather.

Summer in Washington state sounds a heck of a lot better than braving the Arizona heat. I can go for walks outside without applying factor 70 sunscreen, I will have to apply bug repellent though, so there is a trade off.

After that we go to Hawaii. I know these kids have made some interesting choices... but who am I to argue with a week spent floating down a lazy river or touring a volcano?

Although this summer is packed with exciting trips and activities, what I am really looking forward to is the fall. I can read, sleep in, go for long walks and reconnect with friends and family.

As I think about it, it is beginning to sound a lot like the summers of my childhood, but thankfully without the specter of a new school term ahead of me!

Whether you find yourself by a beach or here in the desert, summer means turning off the oven and exploring refreshing, cool recipes! One of my more versatile and popular salads is Pomegranate Couscous, bursting with vegetables and a sweet bite of honey vinaigrette. It works great as side to grilled meat and seafood or as a main dish with the addition of a few slices of goat cheese over baby greens. If you can’t find the larger pearl couscous in your local supermarket, it can be easily ordered through Amazon ~ Geten Israeli Pearl Couscous/3-pack for $8.79.

Mermaids Pantry Pomegranate Couscous Salad 3 C Large Pearl Couscous 3 C boiling water 2 T olive oil 2 small Zucchini, diced (or combo of green & yellow summer squash) 1 lb Butternut Squash, cubed ½ C Red Bell Pepper, diced ½ C Currants ½ C Dried Cranberries OR Pomegranate Arils ½ Red Onion, diced

¼ C Italian Parsley, rough chop Dressing: 1/3 C White Balsamic Vinegar 2/3 C Olive Oil 2 tsp Honey 2 T Pomegranate Juice 1 tsp Dijon Mustard 1 tsp Kosher Salt ½ tsp Black Pepper Pour boiling water over couscous and olive oil.

Allow to bloom, approx 30 minutes. Allow to cool. Toss butternut squash with 1 T olive oil, add salt & pepper to taste. Saute over med-high heat until beginning to brown; turn off heat and cover. Let it steam until tender. Allow to cool.

Combine the salad components, whisk together vinaigrette ingredients, then toss. Serve at room temp or chilled ~ can be refrigerated up to 3 days.

Traveling with Your Preschooler Traveling can be stressful, period. especially with children. As you explore this summer, keep these handy travel tips in mind: 1. Take breaks. Try to make regular rest stops so your child can get some exercise, use the bathroom or have a snack.

2. Stock up. Bring a stash of toys, snacks, coloring books, and crayons to keep your little one from getting bored or hungry during the trip.

3. Tire ‘em out. Children often travel better when they’re tuckered out and sleepy. If you’re flying, have your child push a small suitcase around the waiting area. If you’re driving, try to leave the house before dawn so they are still sleepy.

4. Engage them. When children are actively involved in something, they are less likely to act out. Ask her what she’s looking forward to on the trip. Give her a camera and ask her to document

the trip, which will encourage her to observe her surroundings.

5. Take the train. Or the subway or a bus or a boat. Children love the novelty of public transportation, so if it’s available at your destination, use it.

6. Check the weather. Make sure you pack for any weather conditions you might encounter.

7. Pass the time. Easy games like 20 Questions, I Spy or Go Fish are a fun way to make the time fly during travel delays.

8. Sanitize. Traveling means coming into contact with more germs than usual. Be sure to pack plenty of antibacterial wipes and hand sanitizer to disinfect everyone’s hands.

Money Matters

For many years, Americans provided for their retirement needs through three sources: the socalled “three-legged stool.” But today, that stool is shakier than it used to be. What can you do to strengthen it? To begin with, all three legs of the stool are facing challenges. Let’s consider them: • Employer pensions – Today, pensions are mostly found in public sector employment, as most private-sector employers have replaced their pensions with 401(k) and similar plans. They do place most of the responsibility for saving on the employee.

• Social Security – Social Security has come under financial pressure because the workers-toretirees ratio has declined significantly.

• Personal savings and investments – More than half of American workers still say their retirement savings are not where they should be, according to a 2021 survey from Bankrate.

You have options for improving some parts of your own three-legged stool.

For example, no matter what happens to Social Security, you can still decide when to start taking payments. You can begin collecting benefits as early as 62, but your monthly checks will be larger if you wait until your “full” retirement age, which will likely be between 66 and 67. You can even delay taking benefits until they “max out” at age 70.

As for a pension, you can’t control what’s available to you through your employer, but you can create your own retirement income stream by contributing as much as you can afford to your 401(k) . And you can also contribute to an IRA or other investment vehicle to further boost your retirement funds. Try to leave these accounts intact until you need them for retirement.

The three-legged stool may not be as universal as it once was – but you can still construct a sturdy structure to support your retirement needs.

Furry Friends The Valley of the Sun starts to heat up to dangerous levels in July, and many of us think about escaping to cooler climes. Before you start on your adventure, consider this advice from the CDC about ways to keep you and your pets safe this summer.

Get In The Way The teenage years are an exciting time for our teens. Physical development and brain development where teens experience increased cognitive abilities, learning, and memory. During this time, the teen brain is hardwiring itself for adulthood. Thoughts, feelings, and actions repeated over time become a set of neurons that become pathways that are used for decisionmaking and behavior patterns in adulthood.

Intellectual, social, and emotional growth has to be nurtured and developed. Part of that growth is becoming aware of emotions and learning to deal with them rather than avoid them. The use of alcohol or drugs during this period creates pathways that often lead to poor decision-making and a pattern of questionable choices resulting in a lifetime of struggle.

This is a key reason 93% of people who enter treatment for a substance use disorder began using in their teenage years. Here’s another crucial point: Elaborate changes in the brain’s dopamine system are also happening. The dopamine system influences learning about what is rewarding in the environment. And if

that’s not enough, throw this into the mix; the teen brain focuses on risk and excitement – that’s why teens get bored quickly. What’s exciting to many of them? Rumors, gossip, drama, social media, parties, who is dating who, and high-risk behaviors like sneaking out of the house at night, having sex, stealing alcohol or pot from home, taking a few prescription drugs from the medicine cabinet, and one more thing; not getting caught. All these high-risk behaviors have what the teen brain focuses on – risk and excitement.

Our job as parents is to foil these high-risk behavior attempts. The teen’s focus is on the here and now. Future scenarios or consequences are not part of the thinking process for most teen brains. Teens place more weight on perceived benefits like being accepted, being liked, a sense of belonging, and social engagement; thus, many follow the crowd due to peer pressure.

Let Go Of The Past Letting go of things you’ve done or things that have been done to you in the past can be difficult. Like forgiveness, letting go means releasing yourself from emotional pain you live in by holding on to what happened. You’re not condoning what was done or giving anyone a pass; you’re simply deciding that you don’t want to live in that place of hurt anymore.

Letting go involves four components: 1. Change your self-talk. There’s no sense hanging on to something you can’t change.

Come up with a phrase to say whenever a memory of the past is triggered, such as “let go”, “stay in the present” or “I am not my past.”

2. Focus on what you can control by working on mindfulness, or staying in the moment and enjoying what’s in front of you. Don’t judge the past by saying you failed at something so you shouldn’t try again. Don’t make assumptions

about the future by saying you’ll fail because you’re not capable, smart enough, etc. Don’t let preconceived notions get in your way. Instead, handle each situation in the now.

3. Take the perspective of a friend. If a friend did what you did, would you judge her so harshly?

Likely not. You would probably give her the benefit of the doubt or say she did her best with what she had. Apply this to yourself instead of holding yourself to a different standard.

4. Try to find a lesson in what happened. Is there anything you learned, any takeaway from the experience? Not all situations have obvious lessons and some may not have a discernible lesson at all. It’s always worth seeking, though.

Sometimes, the lesson is in what you learned about yourself.

Life is too short to hold onto pain. Ending your self-inflicted suffering is within your control. Free yourself from your emotional chains by letting go of what’s holding you back. Be patient with yourself. You are reprogramming your brain, and this takes time and lots of practice.
