From Me To You... Having many choices in life seems like a wonderful thing, but are you like me in that if I have too many choices I am paralyzed by indecision? I always say that if I can choose between three things then I am happy. Any more than that and I just can’t seem to decide. And if my decision affects others, which it most often does, then I am struck even more by the weight of my picks. Take vacations. I love to plan them and dream about the destination and the cute boutique hotel or AirBNB that I will be resting in at the end of a day well spent. I can spend hours, or even days scouring travel sites and reading recommendations looking for that perfect holiday - and mostly enjoy it. Once it gets to making an actual decision I come to a screeching halt. I love this hotel but will my son be OK with sharing a room with his parents again? Or perhaps this house rental would be a better option, again someone will be sleeping on a couch, but it’s just for a few nights... I usually manage to narrow it down to a few options then the reviews throw me off - there are always good and bad ones. This house has the best ambience! But it is also in a shady neighborhood and we shouldn’t go out at night. This hotel has the largest rooms (very important when traveling with children)! But it doesn’t have a restaurant/pool on site (also very important when travelling with children). This one is perfect! But it is way out of budget. Sigh.

it for everyone. After 2 days of force-marching the family around the first two parks on a tight schedule, it occurred to me that there was no earthly way ‘to see and do everything’. So I took a deep breath and decided that being in the happiest place on earth meant that we should at least try to be happy ourselves. I gave up control and let the kids guide our days from then on. Did we do the Muppet 4D ride more times in a row than I care to remember? Yes. Did we blow our fast passes on It’s A Small World? Yes we did. Did the kids have the best time? I like to think so. The complaints certainly stopped, so I take that as a win. Our next vacation (the first since Covid) is coming up and I think I have everything set. As long as those darned hurricanes don’t decide to visit the same town as us, we should have a wonderful time. Even I know I can’t choose the weather!

The Bug Guy The hot Arizona sun can send temperatures skyrocketing in June with daytime highs of 115 degrees or more hitting the west valley. Humidity levels crash because the sun’s energy heats the air, preventing water vapor from being released. We all look forward to the sweet relief of monsoon season when high temperatures fall about 10 degrees to the 100-105 degree range and heavy rains soak the parched desert. During the monsoon period, the dew point temperatures can rise to the 55-65 degree level across the Phoenix metro area and the relative humidity can exceed 40 percent. This increase in humidity produces thunderstorms, which are more common in higher elevations but occasionally move onto the desert floor. Sometimes these thunderstorms carry little rain but produce a haboob, or dust storm. The most intense haboobs lift dust over 5,000 feet into the air and travel up to 150 miles. Other times, thunderstorms across the Southwest produce torrential rain in a short period of time. In these situations, rivers, creeks or dry streams quickly

fill and produce high water on roadways, even in cities like Goodyear and Buckeye. Monsoon season is a fact of life in the desert, but you might not realize they are a catalyst for some of the most dreaded winged creatures … termites. Termites love monsoon season, which sends them swarming by the hundreds as they search for that “special someone” with which to make babies and start a new colony. The moisture eventually draws them inside where they look for wood that comes in contact with house foundations and cracks in building exteriors. A firmly established termite colony can be difficult to eradicate and if left untreated, termites can cause structural damage to your home. It’s good idea to get ahead of curve with some preventative service before the seasonal pests can cause permanent and expensive damage. Now that the summer rains are imminent, it’s time to call your pest professional to protect your most important investment – your home. ACEs

What if I told you the new gateway to addiction is something that cannot be smoked, swallowed, snorted, or injected; and your child may have been exposed to it and not even know it. The cartels cannot make it and dealers cannot sell it, but it still prevalent in society. You as a parent and role model to youth can make all the difference in it having an impact on your child’s life, not just as a child, but as the transition into adulthood. So, what is this vicious demon? ACEs or Adverse Childhood Experiences. Adverse Childhood Experiences are traumatic events that take place in a child’s life before age 18. Not only does this increase the risk of developing Substance Use Disorder (SUD), but ACEs are linked to chronic health problems such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and mental illness to name a few. Certain social determinants of health and ACEs create toxic stress or trauma in one’s life. ACEs have also been shown to have lasting lifelong negative effects on health, as well as life opportunities such as education and job potential. ACEs are measured by what is called the ACEs Score. An ACEs score ranges from zero to nine; the higher the score, the greater the risk. So, what does the effect of ACEs look like in adulthood and what can you do about it? Studies show someone who has zero ACEs has a 1 in 69

· · · · · · · ·

chance that they will become an alcoholic, 1 in 480 use IV drugs, and 1 in 96 attempt suicide. Now if we look at those same situations with someone that has experienced seven ACEs the results are shocking. 1 in 6 is an alcoholic, 1 in 43 uses IV drugs, and 1 in 5 attempt suicide. Those are alarming numbers, and you can see why ACEs are the gateway to addiction and negative lifelong health issues. The good news is you can prevent ACEs. The even better news is that ACEs do not have to define who a person will become, and we as a community are in control. The first step is becoming aware of the damage that toxic stress and trauma can cause while providing a nurturing environment for our children to thrive. If ACEs are prevented in the first place, children stand a much better chance to prosper as they mature and grow. Just because you or your child have faced multiple ACEs in childhood, does not mean that you will be doomed to a life of destruction and sickness. I know individuals that have experienced all 9 ACEs, refused to become victim, and are in control of becoming a better person each day. Learning effective coping skills and implementing positive habits in their lives, they are living proof that you can heal and love your story! Furry Friends Summer means lots of outdoor activities for you and your furry friend. However, July is the hottest month of the year in Arizona, and our monsoon season is in full swing. This means we need to be especially alert to protect our pets from heat and humidity, as well as environmental hazards.

This may seem obvious, but it is worth repeating: Don’t walk your dog in the middle of the day. As temperatures soar, the pavement heats up, so walk only in the early morning and check the pavement, asphalt or metal (such as a boat dock) before you go. If you can hold the back of your hand on the surface for 10 seconds, it’s probably okay for your dog to walk on. Also, watch for broken glass and debris while you’re out on walks. To determine if it’s too hot to walk your pup at all, add the air temperature and the humidity level. If the combined value is above 150, your dog could be at risk of a heat stroke. And never leave your dog in the car, even for five minutes. Be alert to signs of burned pads, including limping or refusing to walk, licking or chewing feet, whining or heavy panting. If your dog shows any of these symptoms, immediately wash the injured paw with antibacterial soap and rinse with cool water. Then, get your dog to a vet as soon as possible.

your dog’s feet protected. Booties for dogs are popular, but because dogs breathe through their feet, wearing booties prevents them from thoroughly cooling themselves. There are several products on the market to help protect and heal paws. Look for one that uses organic, all-natural ingredients, such as Pawtection from Natural Dog Company. It is also essential that your dog’s vaccinations are up-to-date, especially if you are traveling this summer. In addition to routine shots, ask your vet for the Leptospirosis vaccine. Leptospirosis is a highly contagious bacterial disease that can affect people and animals, and cases in Maricopa County have been rising. Find more information at maricopa.gov/ 4302/Leptospirosis. By ensuring your dog is safe and well-protected, you and your furry companion can enjoy whatever you have planned for this summer. Submitted by Lyndie Mason Warner, a Verrado resident.

Five Little Ways to Say I Love You Telling your children you love them is one of the best things you can do as a parent, but showing your children you love them is also important. Here are five ways to show you care. 1. Write a note to your little one. It can be a simple note that says “I love you,” just something to let your child know you’re thinking about her. Put the note in her lunchbox, under her pillow or in a place where only she will look. 2. Say yes to an unusual request. Did your child request donuts and ice cream for dinner? Does he want to wear his pajamas all day? Relax the rules occasionally.

4. Ask questions. When your child talks to you, engage her and ask follow-up questions. Creating a dialogue can show her that you’re truly interested in her world and what she has to say. 5. Share your stories. Your child is just as curious about you as you are about him. Talk to him about what you did for fun when you were his age, or tell him about your first day of school. Submitted by Nicole Bigham, On-site Owner, The Goddard School in Buckeye-Verrado

3. Listen to her stories. Stop what you’re doing and listen to her recap her day or a recount a game she played with a friend. This simple gesture helps you stay connected with your child.

We help children explore and discover their interests through play in a safe environment. Highly trained teachers gently guide and encourage children every step of the way as they grow, develop and achieve important milestones.

Money Matters You might think you need to have a large estate or millions of dollars to benefit from working with a trust company, but that’s not the case. And if you’re not familiar with what a trust company can do, you might be surprised at all the services it can provide, including the following:

• Wealth management – Typically, when working with a trust company, it can manage retirement accounts, monitor investments and disburse funds, make changes as needed and ensure compliance with government reporting for contributions, withdrawals and rollovers. While different companies operate in different ways, you may have an arrangement in which you work with a personal financial advisor and a separate portfolio manager. • Financial management during incapacity – If you were to become incapacitated and couldn’t make financial decisions, a trust company can step in, giving you peace of mind from knowing that your financial assets will be managed by a team of professionals, helping protect you and your family from potentially dire consequences.

•Trust administration – The company can act as trustee for a trust you’ve established, such as a revocable living trust, which can allow your estate to avoid probate while providing you with great control over how your assets will be distributed at your passing. Alternatively, the trust company can work alongside an individual you’ve designated to execute the terms of a trust. When it’s time to settle your estate, the trust company can handle the valuation, dispersion and re-titling of assets, pay off any debts and expenses, and complete any tax returns related to your estate. In addition to providing these practical services, a trust company may benefit you in a more intangible way. It’s unfortunate but true that, in many families, dividing up assets can cause conflict and bitter feelings. But when a trust company serves as trustee, it impartially administers distribution of the assets based on the instructions you’ve provided in the trust – helping minimize family disputes over inheritances.
