From Me To You... Lately I have been feeling like a swan. No, not graceful or suddenly beautiful. I feel like I am maintaining poise and remaining calm on the surface, whilst under the waterline I am peddling furiously, trying to keep up. Anyone else? The world is not the place it was a mere six months ago, heck it was different a mere two weeks ago. The things I worried about then seem almost laughable now. Except they are still the things I worry about, there is just a new layer of larger issues placed on top of everything else. Perhaps I am not a swan but a camel, balancing straws one after another, wondering which one will break me? And yet, they don’t. Break me. I can’t let them. I have to keep balancing, keep peddling away under the water. Because if I stop what happens to the people who rely on me? I will not let them be dragged down. I know I am not alone in this place — many others are feeling this way. You can tell when you talk to them. A flicker in their gaze, or an unexpected pause in a conversation that displays a slight distance midsentence. That monent when they remember their problems looming overhead.

Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, the Spanish Flu, wars, famines, and plagues, to name a few.) We will look back at this period one day and marvel at what we overcame, what we achieved and what we survived. Our children and our children’s children will read about it in history and be relieved that it didn’t happen to them. I do that when I read about tragedies. Phew, I am sure glad that didn’t happen to me! Well this time is did and it is. Is this a test from God? Are we being measured against an almightly yardstick? I hope not. I am not confident in my ability to pass that test. But I can tell you what I am confident in. Our perseverance, our will to survive and thrive. We, as a human race, always come through in the end. We are scrappy. I don’t know what is coming next, and believe me there will be another challenge next week. I do know we can handle it. Together.

Walking into La Vie Med Spa a feeling of luxurious calm envelops you, as if you had wandered into an upscale boutique in Paris. The smiling faces and stunning decor set you up for an experience worthy of Verrado and its residents. The creation of La Vie Med Spa was the result of owner Axelle Mesmacque-Jensen’s vision, her husband Bruce’s knowledge and support, and design maven Shannon Rayner’s expertise. Axelle’s lease was up in her previous location and she knew she wanted something different, a place with a soothing atmosphere where she could help people feel and look their best. Thanks to her husband she found and was able to realize her dream in the new construction just north of the I-10. Her longtime friend and designer, Shannon Rayner of Illustre Interiors, was brought in to translate Axelle’s idea into a beautiful reality. Together they created a space oozing French luxury that is just what we need in Verrado. The result is amazing. With cleansing UV lighting throughout the space to protect you from Covid-19, continuous sanitization, and a welcoming mask policy, you can feel safe in their relaxing environment. Axelle also has rapid Covid-19 testing available on-site for $75. Axelle Mesmacque-Jensen, RN, CLT, French Radiance Aesthetics, is originally from France (which explains the beautiful environment) and

The Bug Guy The heat wave that closed out May carried over into June and has us thinking about what our monsoon season will be like this summer as it continues to get warmer in July. What about our monsoon season you may ask? It appears that the average start date for our monsoon season is July 6th, however the earliest start on record was June 16, 1925. While July is generally the start of our monsoon season, without a visible El Nino effect to bring in the high-level moisture it looks like we may be in for a hotter, dryer summer with an increased possibility of dust storms. This weather pattern could lead to a record number of heat advisory days and a significantly higher wildfire risk. As I write this the Tonto fire is currently the largest brush fire burning in the country and summer has only just begun. Please consider all safety and fire warnings as we celebrate our country’s independence this month. What does monsoon season and the weather have to do with bugs you ask? Well, with higher

temperatures and lower rainfall/humidity I believe we will see a reduction in visible termite activity and a big increase in scorpions, spiders, crickets, and all the other bugs we have here! While termite visibility is reduced, they will still be active and have a shorter swarming season When we have a strong monsoon season, we typically see a reduction in crawling bugs and an increase in flying bugs, this is because of the low-level flooding that even a mild storm can cause. Think about this from a bug’s point of view! Imagine if you were a tiny insect and a flash flood comes along and suddenly you are swimming for your life. This is the life of a bug during monsoon season! Monsoon storms can reduce the insect populations by up to 40%. This sounds awesome, until you realize that with the rain comes new growth and a better environment for insects to reproduce and thrive. So, with reduced potential for rainfall, we will likely see more insects that thrive on the ground. However, we need to continue to be prepared and do our part when it does rain. Be sure to reduce opportunities for standing water after the rains and keep your weeds in check to minimize insect habitats during this season. Estrella Mountain Pest Control, Larry Cash

April’s "Pending Home Sales" index of signed contracts on existing homes fell 21.8%. The National Association of Realtors chief economist expects this will be the lowest point for contracts, and May the lowest for closed sales. Online Real Estate Sites report in the week ending May 10, newly pending sales nationwide were up almost 50% from the same period in April, plus, new for-sale listings were up 12.5% monthly and home values up 4.3% year-over-year. New Home Sales turned the corner in April, up 0.6%, to 623,000 annually. These deals were done at the height of state lockdowns, buyers jumped on lower mortgage rates and aaordable home prices. Freddie Mac’s chief economist notes, “...all signs continue to point to a solid recovery in home sales activity heading into the summer as prospective buyers jump back into the market.”

Kindergarten Readiness

While the return to “life as we knew it” can make parents welcome sending their children back to school, it may not be a smooth transition for some. A common temptation is to start testing our children about school readiness topics. Here are four questions you may want to approach differently: 1. Are you excited about going back to school? Most preschoolers will feel a mix of emotions: excitement, uncertainty, curiosity, even fear, so it’s hard for them to answer directly. Instead, let them overhear you talking to others about going back to school and some of your mixed feelings. This will let them know this is an okay topic and may encourage them to ask their questions about going back. 2. Do you want to practice your letters and numbers to get ready for school? This might seem practical to parents, but may cause a preschooler to think they are a little

behind. Instead, before your child heads back, start saying things like, “Can you find the letter A in the signs along the road?” 3. Anything special you want to do before school begins again? Of course, we want to please our kids, but this question may carry the idea that something serious is about to happen, and they’d better get in their goodbyes. Instead, use the last weekend for family time that is more laid back. 4. When you do want to start getting ready to go to bed earlier to get ready for school mornings? This question may seem like you are trying to partner up with them on this issue, but it’s better to get it started when you think they should, since it will probably be a slow process. Cabin Fever?

It’s not always easy to be at home with kids day after day, but with a little creativity, you can beat cabin fever. Whether you’re in your own backyard or venturing out, there are plenty of things you can do to have fun together. Here are just a few things to try. Play tourist Pretend your car is a tour bus. Let Mom or Dad play tour guide first, modeling what to say (serious and/or funny). Drive by picturesque or unusual locations and make up the “tour” as you go along. Then let your kids take a turn narrating the “sights” as you drive. Enjoy a treat with the family Take a tour to find the best shake or burger.

Make washing the car an event Young children will have a blast being in the car during the washing process. Turn up their favorite songs while you sit back and watch the suds and water do their work. Or you could involve the kids in washing the family car in your driveway. Make the most of your own yard You’d be amazed how much kids can appreciate their own yard. * Create an obstacle course using large cardboard boxes, hula hoops, cones or other items from your garage. * Make bubbles with 1 part dish soap to 3 parts water, adding a little sugar. Stir the mixture gently. Use pipe cleaners or cut out the bottom of plastic water bottles to create wands. * Use sidewalk chalk to draw hopscotch and other games, plus pictures and hopeful messages for neighbors walking by. * Find veggies or flowers your kids want to grow and involve them in gardening projects. * Dig through your garage for neglected toys and games. Or make your own games, like jump rope, cornhole or horseshoes, using household items. Take a trip down memory lane Scour your memory and ask grandparents about outdoor games from when they were children. Have grandparents explain how to play their games via phone or FaceTime. Then, video kids playing the games for the whole family to share! Spending time together, outside or in, creates special memories your kids will treasure as they grow up - making all your efforts worthwhile.

When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.

There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.”

provides. Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share. Perhaps the best quote about advertising in a recession came from Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. When asked, “What do you think about a recession?” he responded, “I thought about it and decided not to participate.” -----------------------------We at Estrella Publishing are open for business and here working overtime to support our clients and potential future clients with their marketing strategy. Call / text 623-594-9283 with any questions.

There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown. • The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. • Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times. • Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, can provide greater short-term sales growth, increases during a recession. • When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current and future sales. An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.” An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits. Another strategy used by marketers is using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. When the economy bounces back, regular pricing can return. Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand 12 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

As parents, grandparents, or caring adults, there are times when we must Get in the Way and be the guiding force—and at times—foil these highrisk situations teens create or put themselves in. Get in the Way Tips were created to make raising kids easier and help you help them become successful. Each tip either educates, creates awareness, gives you the “how-to steps,” or builds success skills and habits that will have a positive impact on your teen’s life. For example, Get in the Way Tip #1: Verbalize Your Expectations Often, both educates and gives you the “how-to steps.” Get in the Way Tip #5 builds success skills and habits. It will help your teen become goal-oriented, and give them purpose and passion. Imagine your teen having goals and putting all the youthful enthusiasm and energy into moving in the direction of their goals. Would

that motivate them? Would that get them to be more futureoriented? Would it have the potential to make your job as a parent or other caring adult more exciting, less stressful and rewarding? The best thing is, you do not have to wait until your child is a teenager. I encourage you to start early. My youngest began setting goals in kindergarten. His first goals were simple: camp out with his dad, build a fort,, learn to jump his bicycle and read a book by himself. His earliest memories of goal setting were setting and accomplishing his goals; imagine the confidence this will build in your son or daughter. More than two decades later, goal setting is a usual way of life for my boys. Know that this is a great parent/child exercise! Best of all, you can work on this together! A word of caution: when I recommend you work on this together, I do not mean you help them determine what you think their goals should be; these have to be their goals. So, for clarity, you write your goals, they write their goals, and you share your goals; that is what “together” means. We are doing something different in this article. The answers you seek are not written here. Use the QR code to access The IT Formula, which includes the video and goal packet to guide you and your kids. The best part—it’s free! We believe in developing success habits and behaviors in youth as an important way to reduce underage drinking, vaping and nicotine use, teen drug use, and Rx abuse. You must admit, getting your son or daughter through adolescence drug and alcohol-free can be challenging, and we are here to help you Get in the Way. Money Matters If you have young children, you may want to save for their higher education, whether that be college or trade school. At the same time, though, you’re moving ever closer to retirement. Can you save for your kids’ education and a comfortable retirement for yourself at the same time?

First, consider your retirement accounts. If you have a traditional 401(k) or similar plan, your contributions come out of your paycheck before you even see the money – so it’s about as painless a way of building your retirement fund as possible. Put in as much as your budget allows and consider increasing your contributions when you receive a raise at work. You can also direct your bank to move money each month from your savings or checking account into your IRA.

Now, let’s move to your other key goal: education. Several education funding vehicles are available, but one of the most popular is the 529 plan. Your earnings grow tax-deferred and withdrawals are free from federal tax, provided the money is used for qualified higher education expenses. Furthermore, your 529 plan contributions may earn a state tax deduction or credit if you participate in your own state’s plan. Of course, you’ll still have to budget your You can set up recurring contributions from a resources. You want to invest as much as you bank account to a 529 plan. And you don’t have can, but not so much that your monthly cash to fund your 529 plan on your own. Instead of flow is crimped. Consequently, you may have to gifts for birthdays, holidays, graduations and consider retiring later, contributing less to your other occasions, why not ask friends and relatives child’s education, or a combination of the two. to contribute to the 529 plan you’ve set up for But in terms of logistics, you can make saving your child? They’re all eligible to participate and investing easier. – and their contributions may earn them tax benefits if they live in your state and you’ve invested in your own Straight talk state’s plans. It is indeed possible, although you may need to prioritize somewhat. Specifically, you may not want to put off saving for retirement in favor of education. But by viewing these goals together and investing as early as possible in each of them, you can take advantage of one of your biggest assets – time.
