From Me To You... I truly believe that we all have superpowers. Some people can climb the tallest buildings with a single bound, others can see through walls, and yet others can shoot webs out of their wrists. Oh, right, that would be Marvel superheroes. All kidding aside, I do think we have amazing strengths that we use in our daily lives. You hear about the person who lifts a car off of an injured person in an accident, the surge of adrenaline helps there I am sure. Or maybe it is as simple as a mother’s intuition that someone is getting in trouble, usually preceded by a deafening silence from the room full of toddlers. My superpower is spatial awareness. Not impressed? You should be. I can load a dishwasher to capacity and everything gets clean. I can parallel park any vehicle in any space more than 6 inches larger than the car in question without a scratch. I can drive on roads in England and not get my car totaled by passing hellions. I can go grocery shopping and be able to fit every last bag of frozen peas and tub of Ben & Jerry’s into my freezer.

The best of all though is my packing ability. I was taught by my Mum how to pack things in things - you know socks inside boots, stuff like that. But it goes beyond the simplicity of ‘Traveling Tetris’. If you give me a pile of clothes and sundries I can, 9 times out of 10, make it all fit in your suitcase with room for one more cute top or pair of flipflops. The last time I came home from England I packed so efficiently I had one extra suitcase free - I of course used that space to bring home extra chocolate. I wish I had more superpowers, like the ability to stay on task for more than two minutes, or keep my house clean and tidy without the panic of impending visitors. Also the ability to get things done in a timely manner. That is one superpower I would trade spatial awareness for in a heartbeat. Actually, I think I will keep the powers I have, unless someone wants to trade for invisibility?

On Our Cover

Tell me about the HOT Community Foundation. How and when did it get started? Helping Others Together (HOT) Community Foundation was founded in 2019 by a group of philanthropic-minded women who are passionate about helping struggling children and families. Our mission is to bring people together to provide help and hope for struggling children and families in the West Valley. What does HOT do? HOT brings together people with time, people with money and goods and people with need. Throughout the year, we raise money through events and campaigns to support our Sugar Plum Fairies program, which provides a magical Christmas to struggling children across the West Valley. We work with local school districts and other organizations to identify the families who need our help the most. There are 172 Title One elementary schools in the West Valley meaning that 40% or more of the children attending the school are low income and qualified to receive assistance through the Arizona Qualified Charity program. This year, our goal is for 225 children to have a magical Christmas of wrapped gifts of clothing, hygiene essential, toys and groceries. Who is involved? Last year 267 friends and neighbors from across the West Valley volunteered 408 times. As the lifeblood of our organization, our volunteers do it all — from managing our nonprofit as members of the Board of Directors, to organizing and implementing fundraising events, to purchasing, wrapping, and delivering gifts to children during the holidays. Since our inception 508 generous friends, neighbors and local businesses have given over $216,000 to HOT. Our events such as our Party with a Purpose and our Diamonds in the Rough golf tournament were attended by friends and neighbors from across the West Valley.

Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

How can others help? • Donate to HOT - We rely on the generosity of our friends, neighbors, and local businesses to contribute financially to support HOT’s mission. Our annual Christmas in July campaign will begin July 1st and run through July 31st. Our goal is to raise $30,000. Because our overhead is so low, donors can be confident that their tax-deductible gifts are put to good use right here in the 15 cities west of Interstate 17. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, donations are tax-deductible as allowed by law. We are also an Arizona Qualified Charitable Organization; that means individuals can deduct a $400 gift to HOT ($800 for a couple) directly off the bottom-line of their state income taxes. Ignite the light in a child’s eyes and donate to HOT. A gift to support Sugar Plum Fairies makes Christmas special for struggling children. https:// hotcommunityfoundation.org/ • Become a Volunteer - As a group we have fun and laugh a lot but are also serious about offering volunteers meaningful work to do. We’re well organized and focused, putting your time to good use. Visit our our website to register; https://hotcommunityfoundation.org/volunteer/ Every volunteer and donor will experience the joy of helping a struggling child, boosting a family’s hope, and improving our community by helping others together. What are your goals for the future? Our goal for 2022 is to provide help and hope to 225 children through our Sugar Plum Fairies holiday giving program. By 2029 we hope to expand our annual reach to 600 struggling children. Is there anything else you would like to add? We have no staff, no buildings and minimal operating expenses which means we can focus all our financial support on our mission. Thanks to our volunteers and donors, dozens of local children get to experience a joyful holiday season while knowing their neighbors truly care about them. We help to ease their parents’ stress and make the holidays much brighter for them. Together we make a difference! June 2022

Sunday Blues Do you sometimes find yourself feeling less than optimistic as your weekend draws to a close each Sunday? If so, you’re far from alone. Stats recently published on Inc.com indicate 81% of workers have experienced the “Sunday scaries” in anticipation of the work week ahead. Still, it’s important to fend off those encroaching feelings and preserve the quality of your Sunday afternoon, since weekends are generally intended to help people relax, rejuvenate and enjoy time with family and friends. In that spirit, here are five suggestions to help energize your Sunday. • Be intentional about weekend plans. Plan ahead so you spend your weekend time doing what you really need or want to do instead of simply waiting for things to unfold. Fulfilling your plan can help you feel more in control, ward off

procrastination, provide a sense of accomplishment and eliminate any sense of having “wasted” your weekend. • Incorporate activities you love. Spend part of your weekend doing something you enjoy. It’s all too easy to get caught up in activities you feel you have to do that you never have time for the things that give you pleasure. • Maintain a cheerful environment. Make sure your physical living area is neat, clean, well-lit and boosts your energy. A little scent therapy in the form of a candle, room spray or plug-in oil can be the mood boost. • Consider disconnecting from your phone and computer. Keep thoughts of work from encroaching on your weekend psyche by unplugging from your screens until Monday morning. Protect your mental and emotional space from the stress of the working world and focus on self-care instead. • Prioritize sleep and eating habits. Disregarding your normal patterns on the weekends - perhaps by skipping meals, overindulging in junk food, failing to stay hydrated or staying up until the wee hours - can easily backfire by Sunday night. Following healthy habits can enhance your general sense of well-being and set you up well for the start of your work week. Sundays are a key part of every weekend, so don’t waste them thinking about Mondays. Strive for a healthy work-life balance by claiming each Sunday for yourself, your own pursuits and your own self-care.

3 Easy Summer Science Experiments Children have a natural curiosity in STEAM subjects (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics). You can encourage your little scientist’s interests by conducting the following easy experiments at home. Milk Fireworks: Pour whole milk into a baking pan. Add drops of red and blue food coloring. Add a “squirt” or two of dishwashing liquid, and watch the colors burst and swirl! When the “fireworks” slow down, add another couple of drops of dishwashing liquid to get them going again. Explanation: The soap separates the fat from the other liquids in the milk, causing patterns to appear. Dancing Raisins: Put raisins (or dried corn or macaroni) in a clear cup. Fill the cup with lemonlime soda. Watch how the raisins bob and sink in the cup. Ask your child what makes the raisins do

®

this. Explanation: The gas bubbles in the soda lift each raisin up, and when the bubbles reach the surface and pop, the raisins sink. Salt & Vinegar Pennies: Put ¼ cup of white vinegar into a clear plastic or glass bowl. Add one teaspoon of table salt and stir until the salt dissolves. Dip a dull, dirty penny halfway into the liquid, holding it there for 10 to 20 seconds. Remove the penny from the liquid. What does your child see? Explanation: Salt and vinegar create a weak acid that dissolves copper oxide, which is the tarnish on a dull penny. *An adult should oversee all activities. Activities may not be appropriate for all ages. Submitted by Nicole Bigham, On-site Owner, The Goddard School in Buckeye-Verrado

The Bug Guy The guy at your door when you call for pest control.

Have you ever wondered what it takes to become a licensed pest control technician? What motivates someone to become a pest technician? Did you know that the Arizona Department of Agriculture, department of pest management does an in-depth background check, with a fingerprint card, on every applicant that applies to test for their license? Once an individual is approved to test, they only have 90 days to get their industrial and general licenses, this is only allowed once, if they fail, they can retest but only until their 90 days are up. Additional licenses can be added after the 90-day period, such as Termite inspection, and Termite treatment licenses. All tests require a high score to pass. But that’s not where it ends, you don’t just get your license and you’re good forever, we must complete at least 6-12 continuing education credits annually to renew our licenses.

It takes a licensed technician approximately 3-4 years to be proficient and skilled in their performance. Here at Estrella Mountain Pest Control, we attend multiple industry training events throughout the year to maintain and improve our knowledge and proficiency. At the heart of these questions is an individual that genuinely wants to help people improve their life. We do this by providing services that are necessary to your health and safety. Licensed technicians are trained to apply pesticides in a safe and effective manner, as required by federal label law. We provide these services all year long. Weather can sometimes cause a short delay, but nothing else stops us. So, when you call with an ant, scorpion, cricket, or termite issue the licensed technician has the training, skillset, and the experience to put a process in place to successfully address your pest issues. Money Matters

If you know how important it is to invest for your future, but you’re unsure of the road to follow, you may want to get some guidance and direction from a financial professional. But if you’ve never worked with one before, what can you expect? Here are some things to look for: • Assessment – These days, advisors recognize the need to view their clients’ lives holistically. Consequently, you will see questions like this: What are your feelings about investing? How would you judge your risk tolerance? What are your individual financial goals? What hopes and dreams do you have for your family? • Recommendations – Only after fully understanding your needs, goals and preferences will a financial advisor recommend any investment moves. You may want to steer

clear of individuals claiming to be financial advisors who “guarantee” big returns with no risk. In the investment world, there are few guarantees, and every investment carries some type of risk. • Communications – Financial professionals communicate with their clients in different ways, but you should always feel free to reach out to an advisor with any questions or concerns. Most financial advisors will want to meet with clients at least once a year, either in person or through an online platform, to review their investment portfolios. But financial advisors won’t wait a full year to contact clients to discuss a particular investment move that might need to be made. • Technology – A financial advisor can employ a variety of software programs to help clients. For example, a financial advisor can determine the rate of return you might need to attain specific goals, helping shape your investment strategy. Anyone’s plans can change, so the ability to view different potential scenarios can prove valuable. Above all, a financial advisor can help you feel more confident as you pursue your goals and during times of market turbulence, such as we’ve experienced this year, a financial advisor can help you avoid overreacting to downturns. Navigating the investment landscape can be challenging – but the journey can be a lot smoother if you’ve got the right guide. Furry Friends What an exhilarating evening we had Dancing with the Stars, our biggest fundraising event of the year. Community Paws would like to thank our exceptional dancers, sponsors and all those who attended, as well as the dance teachers from the Goodyear Arthur Murray Dance Studio who made this event possible. We’d also like to thank those who placed online votes for our dancers. The money raised from this and other events throughout the year will go a long way toward realizing our dream of having a place to call home so that we can continue and expand our work of providing for animals in need within our community.

It is illegal in Arizona to leave animals alone and confined in a motor vehicle when physical injury to or death of the animal is likely to result. Remember to walk your dog in the coolest part of the day and to check the pavement by placing your hand on it. If you can’t keep it there for a couple of seconds, it is too hot to walk your pet. Let’s do our best to keep our furry companions safe and healthy this summer. Submitted for Community Paws by Lyndie Mason Warner, a Verrado resident

Spring was nearly non-existent in the Valley of the Sun this year, with temperatures near 100 starting in March. Now that June is upon us, we could probably all use a reminder about how to keep our pets safe and healthy in the heat of the summer. Most dog owners know that you can’t leave a pet in a hot car. Temperatures can rise to dangerous levels in just minutes, putting your dog at risk of heatstroke. But what if you open a window a little bit? Does that make it safe to leave your dog in the car? The answer is simple: You should NEVER leave Opening Specials a dog alone in the car, even with $79 comprehensive exam Xrays and cleaning the windows cracked. Studies ( in abscence of periodontal disease) have shown that a vehicle with Free ortho consult windows left open a few inches $25 emergency exam and X-ray heats up at almost the same rate as a car with windows rolled up. Come to our new modern facility and meet our experienced dentist Dr. Sabrina Dhanjal, DDS. Parked in 70degree weather, the We perform routine exams, root canals, inside can reach 100 degrees in implants, wisdom tooth removal, bone just 20 minutes. ACEs

People from all walks of life are investing in creating awareness and understanding of ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences). ACEs have been found to have a high correlation with the risk for cancer, heart disease, diabetes, substance use disorder, suicide, obesity, COPD, and premature death – all of which are preventable. Research started by the CDC and Kaiser Permanente leaves no doubt that a child’s developing brain subjected to adverse experiences and toxic stress, is at far greater risk of succumbing to one or more of the leading causes of death in adulthood. A major factor, if not the main factor, underlying substance use disorder is ACEs that have not healed and are concealed from awareness by shame, secrecy, and social taboo. There are solutions to this problem, but right now, data shows a dramatic worsening of ACEs in our youth. The number of Arizona children with two or more ACEs is significantly higher than the U.S. as a whole (www.azaces.org). The price tag on outcomes related to toxic stress from childhood adversity is yet another factor

compelling society to take note and make changes. According to the CDC, “the economic and social costs to families, communities, and society totals hundreds of billions of dollars each year.” (cdc.gov). The ultimate goal is the prevention of ACEs and building resilience for those who have experienced ACEs. Widespread improvements in policies and practices within organizations, communities, caregiving settings, and households can turn this trend around. Just as research has made us aware of the shocking extent of the problem, research is also providing tools and new ideas for prevention and healing. See our ad in this month’s Main Street issue and scan the QR code for more information and resources. The Way Out West (WOW) Coalition embraces ACEs awareness by promoting education and incorporating awareness of research findings into their activities. Understanding substance use behaviors as a reactive adaptation to ACEs and mitigation leads to a better understanding of effective strategies for prevention and treatment. After doing exhaustive research and working with Shurrre for our solar system, our electric bills went from over $450 per month to less than $20 in the summer. We are beyond happy with our system! ~ Kathy P, Victory at Verrado I interviewed 5 companies and did research online. Sunpower had the best quality. Shurrre Solar was able to answer all my questions and was the only company that was not rude and pushy. You get what you pay for. ~ John, Verrado

Keep Moving If you’re coping with pain, such as joint pain caused by osteoarthritis (OA), you may feel like you’ve been sitting out on life. Pain can make you reluctant to participate in activities that you enjoy and miss out on connecting with those you love. But experts will tell you that if you can move, even just a little more than you do now, you will reap benefits well beyond the physical.

“Movement is not just a powerful and effective tool for pain management,” says personal trainer Pete McCall, NASM-CPT, PES. “Movement also brings people together. ” But how can you start, especially if you’ve been sedentary for a while? Here are tips for increasing your activity level to help with pain management and feel more connected with others.

• Start with low-impact exercise. Walking, swimming and biking are all low-impact exercises that are easier on your joints - and that you can do with other people. • Join a community centered around movement Whether it’s an exercise class, yoga center or walking club, getting together with others who are also focusing on their well-being can be encouraging and even fun. • Warm up first, and cool down after exercise. • Don’t sit out on life. If you see an opportunity to try a new sport, join a dance class, go on a nature hike or participate in a charity walking event - say “yes” to movement. Not only could it help relieve some of your pain, but it will make you feel that sense of connection to others that will boost your mood and encourage you to keep going on your wellness journey. “You may be surprised by where movement can take you,” says McCall. “I’ve never had a client say they regret getting started - only that they wish they’d started sooner.”
