KEEP COOL DURING COVID
https://www.azcentral.com/story/travel/arizona/road-trips/2020/03/13/arizona-things-do-during-coronavirus-cancellations-closures/5042424002/
Throughout metro Phoenix, entertainment options from concerts to arts events to movies have been canceled or postponed to fight the spread of the new coronavirus. If you choose to go on an outing, be scrupulous about social distancing. Pack snacks and supplies — restaurants are limited to takeout and delivery only and you should avoid being in close proximity to other people. If you go hiking, choose an uncrowded park or trailhead. Congregating at popular hiking trails like Hole in the Rock or Piestawa Peak will not let you keep the recommended 6-foot distance between you and another person. SEE WILDFLOWERS AROUND PHOENIX It's not too late to see the spring blooms. Find poppies, desert lavender and wild geraniums in the West Valley at White Tank Mountain Regional Park. Bartlett Lake has the less common white poppies and a sparkling reservoir surrounded by mountains.
Make sure to stay on the trails, avoid picking flowers and keep an eye out for rattlesnakes. TAKE A WILDFLOWER SCENIC DRIVE If you're willing to get out of town to see some spectacular sights, drive south to Catalina State Park, Picacho Peak State Park or Saguaro National Park to see some cream cups, poppies, lupines, penstemon and desert chicory. MANY ARIZONA PARKS ARE OPEN Social distancing, but make it outside: Many national and state parks are open, although public programs have been canceled and visitor centers are closed. For some classic Arizona scenery, head to Saguaro National Park in Tucson. The looping drive through the park's western district is especially gorgeous at sunset. Trails, patio areas, restrooms and water stations are open. Be sure to keep distance from- other visitors — 6 feet at 4 your Estrella Publishing Main Street magazine least.
BREAK OUT THE COLORING PENCILS Maybe you don't want to leave the house. Chandler's Vision Gallery has some download-and-print coloring sheets available online, featuring works by local artists. For the social media-savvy, post your (or your little ones') creations on Instagram and tag @visiongalleryaz to show off your art. WATCH A MADE-IN-ARIZONA MOVIE Here's another one that doesn't require leaving the house: the new romantic musical "Sweet Sunshine" shows off landscapes from the Sonoran Desert to northern Arizona's forests — no movie ticket necessary. It's available to stream on Amazon Prime, free to members, beginning Friday, March 20.

From Me To You... I don’t know if you dream, or if you remember those dreams but I have very vivid dreams which I usually remember. Every night I go to sleep thinking what will my next dream be? Sometimes I dream of things that have been bothering me during the day, sometimes I find a solution to something I have been pondering, sometimes my dreams are just random and erratic.
For example there was this one time when I was a child, probably about 16, and it was the night before a big exam (similar to the SATs). I fell asleep and dreamed that I was potato, baking in the oven. I was warm and comfy, quite content to be there, and then I heard a ‘ding’. “Oh!” I thought, “Time to turn over and bake the other side!” So I turned over. Then a couple of minutes later I thought, “Hold on, that was the alarm. I have to get-up-and-go to school!” and this is where it gets really weird because at that point I remember thinking, “Don’t be silly Catherine, potatoes don’t go to school!” and went back to sleep. For those of you that are concerned about the exam, my mother did come in and wake me up so I was actually able to go to school on time and take the exam, but this just goes to show how crazy my dreams can be.

Many times I dream I am driving and the brakes don’t work properly. I can slow down, but never come to a complete stop no matter how hard I push on the pedal. People who believe in dream interpretation would say I am worried that I am not in control of something in my life. That could be true, I have 4 kids, a husband, two unruly dogs, family who live far away, and a business we run from home. Many people report dreams of flying. That sounds like fun, but sadly I have never had that dream. Apparently that one means you feel in control of your life, so I get why I don’t dream I am soaring over Arizona. Anyone dream of showing up at school or work naked? That one is always jarring. Here is another one that is much more recent and pertinent. Last night, in my dream, I was sitting in a parked car waiting for my husband to come out of Safeway. As I watched, a woman opened the trunk of the car opposite me, climbed in, and shut herself inside. A different woman was singing hymns and praying loudly beside the car. It doesn’t seem too hard to figure out what that means. Anyone else drawing parallels to the current situation of us shutting ourselves inside with others praying for our safety? Dreams are so important now, the dream of a world where we can gather with friends and family safely, the dream of going to a movie, and the dream of letting our children attend school again. I dream that we will get back to that world, perhaps not quite as easily or in such a carefree way, but in a new way. Let’s hope that dreams can come true.

On Our Cover June’s featured family on our cover is the Rojo Family. Guillermo (Memo), Nohemi along with their four children Brianna (26), Aleesondra (19), Zebastian (11) and Kingston (2) have been proud residents of the Verrado Community for the last 12 years. Since their move to Verrado, their family has grown along with their business ventures. Their resume of family owned and operated businesses include The Room Escape Games, Red’s Plastering Inc., and additionally, Nohemi has been a REALTOR for 13.5 years.
What is an Escape Room you might ask? An Escape Room is a 60-minute real-life interactive game in which a team of players cooperatively discover clues, solve puzzles, and accomplish tasks in one or more rooms in order to progress and accomplish a specific goal in a limited amount of time. “Being residents of the West Valley we have always felt that we lack entertainment options and after experiencing our first escape room we were hooked. Our vision was to create a unique experience that stood above the rest of the
existing escape room businesses. Part of that, included having a place where people could not only experience an Escape Room but also be able to unwind with a glass of wine or beer.” When The Room Escape Games launched in Feb 2019, it became the only one-stop shop for escape room entertainment that offers private and special event space, event catering and alcoholic beverages. Currently, they have three Escape Room themes to choose from; Treasure Island, Blackout Motel & Speakeasy. No matter which room you choose, one thing is for sure, you are guaranteed a great time! For more information on how to book your escape experience visit www.theroomaz.com or The Room’s social media pages on Facebook or Instagram. Prior to opening the Escape Room, the Rojo’s energy was primarily focused the growth of Red’s Plastering Inc. Founded by Memo in 2001, what once began as a small startup from his home garage, is now considered one of the Valley’s top 5 commercial plastering companies. Red’s Plastering specializes in all commercial exterior plaster finishes, is well respected amongst it’s peers in the construction industry and is proud to say that today, one can easily within any 5 mile radius, pass by a building for which Red’s Plastering was a part of the building team. It is evident that they are quite the dynamic duo and despite the fact that they work together on all business projects big or small, they manage to somehow always successfully find a work and family life balance. Between juggling multiple business, keeping up with the kid’s extracurricular activities and family leisure time, there is hardly a dull moment in the life of the Rojos.

The Bug Guy Essential, non-essential, what does that really mean? During this time it seems as though this distinction in society is important. I admit there are a wide range of jobs that are “essential”, but I think we are all essential. Without each one of us doing our part we would not have a society to be a part of. We have always come together in times of crisis as a country, which is and always has been our strength. As we move forward through this crisis please remember one simple fact, “we are all in this together”. Here in the valley we have been lucky in that we have experienced a low-level outbreak of COVID-19 compared to other areas. As we begin to open local businesses, we can make informed decisions about how to proceed personally. The professional pest control industry has always played an important role in the protection of public health and property. Consider that rodents contaminate or consume about 20 percent of the world’s food supply, and other pests spread disease such as West Nile virus and
Lyme disease. Stinging insects force hundreds of thousands of people to the emergency room each year. Without the critical work of the professional pest control industry, these alarming statistics would be so much worse. At home, the insects that have always frustrated us as part of daily lives and will likely continue to do so. While we are adapting to change, we are not the only things on this earth that experience change. Insects are known to adapt easily to changes in environment and are already quickly adjusting to our new normal. The tower of cardboard boxes waiting to be safely broken down from increasing home deliveries, as one example, make excellent hiding spots for scorpions and crickets in your garage. We in the pest control industry stand ready to help you preserve the quality of life you have today. Continuity of this important service allows us to continue to do our part to protect homes and businesses, and most importantly protect your family and loved ones, from pest-related threats. This information provided by Estrella Mountain Pest Control and the National Pest Management Association.

When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.
There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.” There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown. • The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. • Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times. • Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, can provide greater short-term sales growth, increases during a recession. • When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current and future sales. An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.” An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits.
12 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine
Another strategy used by marketers is using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. When the economy bounces back, regular pricing can return. Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand provides. Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share. Perhaps the best quote about advertising in a recession came from Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. When asked, “What do you think about a recession?” he responded, “I thought about it and decided not to participate.” -----------------------------We at Estrella Publishing are open for business and here working overtime to support our clients and potential future clients with their marketing strategy. Call / text 623-594-9283 with any questions.

Furry Friends
The official start of summer is right around the corner, yet we are already feeling the heat here in the desert! To ensure that your furry friends have a safe and fun summer, please consider these Pet-Friendly Tips. • Keep your pet’s environment climate controlled. AC works best, along with kiddiesized pools that they can cool off in. And of course, never leave your pets in a hot car even for a moment, especially in this Arizona sun!
• More water, please! Your pet’s body is 80% water, which is at least 20% more than us humans. Pets need one ounce of water per pound of body weight. Provide fresh, clean water daily. Monitor your pet’s water intake. Sunken eyes, lethargy, and loss of appetite are a few signs of dehydration. • Schedule your pet’s walks during cooler times of the day. Offer rest, shade, and hydration at least every 15 minutes. With monsoon season on its way, please keep a watchful eye out for
rattlesnakes and Sonoran Dessert toads. They enjoy the cooler times of day as well. • These boots are made for walkin’… Sidewalks, patio, and sand surfaces can heat up pretty quickly in the summer sun. Press your hand onto surfaces for 30 seconds to test them. If it is painful for you, it will be painful for your dog. Please consider some boots to protect your pooch’s precious paws from blisters and burns. Please keep an eye out for a shopping page on our website with many cool items including car magnets, t-shirts, baseball caps, and more! In the meantime, you could also Shop For Our Cause: Chewy will donate $20 to Community Paws for every new customer purchase. Visit www. CommunityPaws.org and click on the ‘Shop Now’ button. Chewy offers 30% off your first order and Free Shipping! Thank you for your continued support. Until further notice, our Junior Division’s monthly meetings have been postponed. Home Sweet Home Let’s be honest, who doesn’t like to shop and save? We are in changing times, and now more than ever, it is important to compare mortgage rates before you buy a home. For Americans with good credit, taking advantage of these historically low interest rates can be a great opportunity!
offering, rates are not the only thing to consider. There may be other costs, fees and pertinent information within each loan estimate.
If “discount points” or “mortgage points” are mentioned, discuss what the rate may look like without them and that way you are comparing “like” terms, apples to apples. Whether you ultimately choose to buy the points or not, what is important is that you are comparing quotes with like variables when negotiating with lenders. Roadblocks
As a teen, my mission in life was to never be like my father. The worst day of my life was the day I realized I was just like him. That was the day I realized I had to do more than think I wanted to be different…I had to do something to become different…and that is how my worst day has now become my best day. There are four Roadblocks to Change, the first being the 90% Rule; we have a 90% chance of being just like our parents. It is a combination of DNA and our childhood environment. When I decided to change, I put all my focus on my “habits,” which is the second Roadblock to Change. If we are going to change – this is the place where all change happens. NASA discovered it takes between 27-29 days for the brain to rewire itself with a new habit or behavior. That’s where the idea that it takes thirty consecutive days to integrate a new habit comes from. The keyword here is consecutive. NASA also discovered that if you miss any day, the system in the brain collapses, and you’ve got to start over. So how does one go about doing this
successfully? Make a 30-day checklist! As an example, let’s say you want to change the habit of procrastinating. The first step is to focus on what you want. The opposite of putting things off is to take action or “do it now.” On my checklist would be a line or box that says, “Do It Now.” At the end of each day I check the box or put a number in the box to remind me of how many consecutive days I have completed. If I realize I did not follow through on my commitment today, I now have the opportunity to do it now. Roadblock number three is the four-letter “F” word... fear. Which is the number one reason people don’t change and stay stuck. Rather than deal with the fear or anxiety, many use roadblock number four, which is distraction or medication. We have to ask ourselves, “How do I distract or medicate myself, so I do not have to deal with changing and becoming my best?” Success Tip: Put all your focus on Roadblock #2, for that is where change takes place. Money Matters During the coronavirus pandemic, our health concerns – for ourselves and our loved ones – have been at the top of our minds. But financial worries have been there, too, and one aspect of every individual’s total financial picture has become quite clear – the importance of an emergency fund.
Even in normal times, it’s a good idea for you to keep three to six months’ worth of living expenses in a liquid, low-risk account. Having an emergency fund available can help you cope with those large, unexpected costs, such as a major car repair or a costly medical bill. Furthermore, if you have an adequate emergency fund, you won’t have to dip into your long-term investments to pay for short-term needs. These investment vehicles, such as your IRA and 401(k), are designed for your retirement, so the more you can leave them intact, the more assets you’re likely to have when you retire. And because they are intended for your retirement, they typically come with taxes and penalties, if you do tap into them early. (However, as part of
Investing is about more than money. At Edward Jones, we stop to ask you the question: “What’s important to you?” Without that insight and a real understanding of your goals, investing holds little meaning.
the economic stimulus legislation known as the CARES Act, individuals can now take up to $100,000 from their 401(k) plans and IRAs without paying the 10% penalty that typically applies to investors younger than 59½. If you take this type of withdrawal, you have up to three years to pay the taxes and, if you want, replace the funds, beyond the usual caps on annual contributions. Of course, life is expensive, so it’s not always easy to put away money in a fund that you aren’t going to use for your normal cash flow. That’s why it’s so important to establish a budget and stick to it. There are different ways to establish a budget, but they all typically involve identifying your income and expenses and separating your needs and wants. You may be pleasantly surprised at how painless it is to follow a budget. For example, if you’ve budgeted a certain amount for food each month, you’ll need to avoid going to the grocery store several times a week, just to pick up “a few things” – because it doesn’t really take that many visits for those few things to add up to hundreds of dollars. You’ll be much better off limiting your trips to the grocery, making a list of the items you’ll need and adhering to these lists. After doing this for a few months, see how much you’ve saved – it may be much more than you’d expect. Besides using these savings to strengthen your emergency fund, you could also deploy them toward longer-term investments designed to help you reach other objectives, such as retirement.
Contact your Edward Jones financial advisor for a one-on-one appointment to discuss what’s really important: your goals.
