From Me To You... With the rise in services like Netflix and Hulu, it is easier to catch your favorite show and watch at your leisure than ever before. This has also led to the phenomenon of binge watching - sitting through a season or series at a time. In reality I have been doing my own form of binge watching for years, turning on House Hunters or Friends every night.
a week for half an hour or an hour it is not too much of an investment of your time. Now with binge watching, there better be something that makes one series worth the days or weeks you will be spending together. Something light and silly or a drama that pulls you in perhaps. Maybe a historical romance, you know so you can learn something while you fritter away all those hours.
There are advantages to screening shows this way. You can fully immerse yourself in the story and follow complicated plot lines more easily. If you are watching a show you have seen before then multitasking comes into play. For example as I write this I am streaming The Big Bang Theory in the background. Bazinga!
I was planning on starting Game of Thrones next week but with all the backlash over the last couple of episodes I am rethinking that choice.
Something that occurred to me is that the way shows are written will have to evolve as we turn more to binge watching. I was watching Grey’s Anatomy and when I saw it originally the plot lines made sense. However, once I started watching one episode after another, the stories seemed to speed up. Relationships blossomed, evolved and ended in a matter of hours, not weeks as I remembered it. The sheer number of disasters also became somewhat comical when viewed that way. I mean, how many horrible things happened to that cast and the poor patients they treated? Subway pole pinning two strangers together, a man attacked by his girlfriend’s lion, near drownings, plane crashes, car crashes, it makes you think twice about visiting Seattle.
Catherine Uretsky
Shows like Grace & Frankie and Santa Clarita Diet are released all at once. You can see the whole thing as quickly or slowly as you want. It makes the gaps between seasons harder to wait for but I guess you can’t have everything. I have also come to realise that the significance of the show you pick has increased in importance. If you dip in and out of a show once Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

On Our Cover
This month’s cover models are all members of the Ganyo Insurance Agency, right here in Verrado. They recently secured an office at 4252 N Verrado Way, Ste B201 Buckeye AZ 85396. Their office on the 2nd floor in the brown office building on the corner of Main Street and Verrado Way. They are the only independent insurance broker in Verrado and the largest in Buckeye. Originally from Minnesota, Greg Ganyo was the State Wrestling champion and he was even good enough to train for the Olympics. He taught school for three years before he opened his first insurance office in Minnesota in 1984 and has been very successful there but is delighted to focus his attention in Verrado and the insurance needs of his friends and neighbors. The Ganyo family has lived in the Verrado community for 15 years, in fact, they bought the
3rd house that was sold here! Splitting their time between Minnesota and Arizona they had the best of both worlds. With the local office here in Verrado Greg plans on concentrating all of his time here by year-end. “Verrado is Home, The West Valley is Home, and Arizona is Home and we are excited to help all of neighbors and friends here. As an Independent Insurance Broker, we pride ourselves in finding the best balance and protection for our clients. With 30+ insurance companies to meet our clients’ needs we feel confident and we will have the right fit for you at any time. Our Priority Is YOU – not insurance companies!” In talking to the Ganyo’s it struck me how earnest and committed they are to taking the time to find the best insurance plan for the individual needs of their clients. Whether you’re looking for auto insurance, homeowners insurance, small business insurance, or specialty coverage, Ganyo Insurance Agency will help you select the right products to fit your insurance needs. “When you walk down the street and see us it will be a face you are glad to know and have working on your behalf.” says Greg “Call Us or Stop In And Shake Hands!” Ganyo Insurance Agency 4252 N Verrado Way Ste B201, Buckeye, AZ 85396 (623) 439-2525 welcome@ganyoinsurance.com www.ganyoinsurance.com

Furry Friends
The official start of summer is right around the corner, yet we are already feeling the heat here in the desert! To ensure that your furry friends have a safe and fun summer, please consider these Pet-Friendly Tips. Keep your pet’s environment climate controlled. AC works best, along with kiddie-sized pools that they can cool off in. And of course, never leave your pets in a hot car even for a moment, especially in this Arizona sun! Prepare your pet’s coat and skin for summer. A well-groomed coat allows air circulation at the skin’s surface and allows heat to transfer out of the body. Vet-approved sunscreen for dogs can be helpful as well for light-colored or thin-coated pets.
Schedule your pet’s walks during cooler times of the day. Offer rest, shade, and hydration at least every 15 minutes during exercise. With monsoon season on its way, please keep a watchful eye out for rattlesnakes and Sonoran Dessert toads. They enjoy the cooler times of day as well. More water, please! If you pup is looking up at you with endearing eyes, you may think he wants a tasty treat, although perhaps he is begging for more water. Your pet’s body is 80% water, which is at least 20% more than us humans. Pets need one ounce of water per pound of body weight. Provide fresh, clean water daily. Monitor your pet’s water intake, especially in these hot summer days. Sunken eyes, lethargy, and loss of appetite are a few of the signs of dehydration. When in doubt, please contact your trusted vet. We invite you to Shop For Our Cause: Chewy will donate $20 to Community Paws for every new customer purchase. Visit www.CommunityPaws. org and click on the ‘Shop Now’ button. Chewy offers 30% off your first order and Free Shipping! As a reminder, there are no Junior Division meetings for the months of June or July. We will resume in August. New members are always welcome to join! Sunscreen Myths It’s no secret that sunscreen is essential for protecting our skin from the sun’s damaging rays. However, not everything you hear about sun care is true: there are a number of dangerous sunscreen misconceptions out there that can lead to potential issues for the skin down the road. To cut through the confusion and help you best protect your skin from the sun’s harmful effects, board-certified dermatologist and Clinical Associate Professor of Dermatology at the New York University Langone Medical Center, Dr. Elizabeth Hale, debunks common sunscreen myths: Myth #1: All sunscreens are created equal Truth: To best protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays, look for the words “broad spectrum” when choosing a sunscreen, which means the product protects from both forms of UV radiation. Opt for a product with a minimum SPF 30, which can help protect you from approximately 97 percent of the sun’s damaging rays, and look for a product that is waterresistant.
Myth #2: Individuals with darker complexions don’t need sunscreen Truth: Having a darker complexion means more melanin is present in the skin, but this only works to diffuse UV light to a certain extent and doesn’t protect from skin cancer and sun-induced hyperpigmentation. The sun can cause damage to anyone’s skin, regardless of their complexion, which is why sunscreen is necessary for people of all skin tones and ethnicities. Myth #3: Cosmetics have enough SPF to keep you protected Truth: A new wave of makeup products containing built-in SPF are taking over the market, but just because you use these products does not mean you should skip sunscreen for the day. To be safe, be sure to apply actual sunscreen before or after your makeup and reapply throughout the day. Having a basic understanding of sun protection and knowing the truth behind common misconceptions is key in safeguarding your skin and reducing your chances of premature skin aging and skin cancer. The Bug Guy Interesting Facts About Centipedes
At one point or another, you’ve probably seen a long, flat, wormlike critter with a ton of legs scurry across the bathroom floor, stop for a few seconds and then race off into a dark crevice. This pest, known as the house centipede, belongs to a diverse group of arthropods found in North America. Often referred to as “hundred-leggers,”
type of occasional invader. The name centipede is misleading. The name centipede literally means “100 legs,” but this pest can actually have anywhere from 15 to 177 pairs of legs. Their legs are long and slender, which helps them to move at a fast speed. Centipedes are night owls. Some centipede species invade homes, but humans rarely see them during the day. They typically hide in damp areas around the house, such as bathrooms, basements and closets. At night is when centipedes are most active.
centipedes look much more scary than they actually are. Here are some interesting centipede facts to help you better understand this unique
Contrary to popular belief, centipedes are not dangerous. While they do have poisonous jaws that they use to inject venom and kill their prey, the jaws are not powerful enough to easily puncture human skin. However, centipedes will occasionally bite in self-defense, which can cause some localized pain and swelling, similar to that of a bee sting. Centipedes are carnivorous. House centipedes feed on many types of small household pests, including spiders, flies, cockroaches and silverfish. All centipedes have poor eyesight, so they detect prey through their antennae. In fact, some centipedes don’t even have eyes. Centipedes have long lifespans. The common house centipede can live for more than a year, while other species have been known to live for as long as 5-6 years. Submitted by Larry Cash, of Estrella Mountain Pest Control

#VeryVerrado It’s getting HOT in here!
What do you do to Beat the Heat in Arizona? Our family has a few favorite places to Camp in order to escape in the summer & with all the options in AZ, here are a few places to visit you might want to consider. We love to CAMP & we do a lot of it in the summer. I highly recommend you check out this family friendly campground in Paige Springs, just south of Sedona, on Oak Creek. Lo Lo Mai Springs is placed amongst the trees in a valley AND very close to the wineries. They offer rustic camping, full hook-up’s & you can rent cabins. There is a pool, hot tub, sports courts, playground, CLEAN bathrooms, small store & tons of activities for the kids. One of our favorite ways to pass the day at LoLo Mai is on the rope swing & then floating down the creek on rafts. Endless time with nature! Another favorite of ours is north of the rim at Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area near Show Low. We usually end up there around the 4th of July. They have a great parade & activities for everyone to enjoy. Fool Hollow has rustic & full hook up options as well. They have playgrounds, fishing & you can rent kayaks, canoes, paddle
boards, grab a frozen treat on site or swim! The views are majestic with cliffs & surrounded by tons of water. I highly recommend this trip in the summer.
Last but not least, because there are so many options, the KOA in Williams, Arizona. They have RV sites, tent camping, cabin rentals AND you can rent a TEEPEE for the family to stay in, which is a blast. They have a pool, spa, snack bar, mini golf, bike trails, dog parks & tons of activities in the surrounding area. Williams is a
great place to check out if you have already visited Flagstaff on several occasions. There is so much to do in Arizona! We love to get away & be at peace in nature. Unplug, unwind & check out the many beautiful sites in our amazing state. If camping isn’t your jam, there are tons of rental options on vrbo. com OR hotels! Whatever you like to do, get out this summer, beat the heat & create lasting memories, while checking off items on your bucket list. Home Sweet Home
Preparing for Summer
We all know, as the temperatures rise, it is tough on our homes, our landscaping, and ourselves! Here are a few tips to get through hot summers most efficiently: Keeping your house cool and comfortable this summer will go a long way, here are some ideas that will help to keep your home cool in the most efficient way. Before the heat rises, have your AC system checked by a professional and serviced if necessary. This may save you from the cost of replacing an AC unit that was not well maintained. It is essential to continue to change your air filters in the home, within the suggested timeframe, to help to keep your in-home air quality good and the system working well too. Also, pull weeds and remove debris around the exterior unit(s) to allow the air to flow freely. Check seals around doors and windows; good seals prevent hot air from leaking in and cool air from leaking out. Running ceiling fans and/or oscillating fans will keep your air circulating.
Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine
Taking care of the exterior of your home can also go a long way to allow for smooth sailing all summer long. To prevent serious damage from monsoon storms, trim trees and bushes away from your home at this time of year. Check your entire irrigation system, including sprinkler heads and bubblers, to be sure all are in proper working order. Trees and plants can suffer in our hot summer months if they are not receiving enough water. Also, check for leaks in the sprinkler system to avoid an excessively elevated water bill. Stay safe from sneaky scorpions my keeping leaves and brush picked up around your home through the summer months. Contact a pest control company to spray regularly to keep scorpions at a minimum - stings can be painful and dangerous! Enjoy your summer in beautiful Verrado and remember to stay well hydrated! The 4 C’s
Five Reasons Why Learning the 4Cs is Important To prepare children for the modern world, STEAM learning (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) has become an essential part of childhood education. Besides introducing children to STEAM concepts, it also helps teach children how to communicate, collaborate and think critically and creatively. These skills, otherwise known as the 4Cs, are essential to success in school and in life. Here are five reasons why. 1. Critical thinking skills increase motivation. Children with strong critical-thinking and problemsolving skills are more likely to be motivated to achieve academically and less likely to be negatively influenced. 2. Creativity provides a healthy emotional outlet. Children who express themselves creatively show
®
less frustration, develop a joy for learning and acquire an appreciation for other perspectives. 3. Communication and collaboration promote confidence.Developing communication skills through fun and collaborative methods fosters a sense of self-esteem, enables healthy emotional development and encourages teamwork. 4. The 4Cs help build executive function skills . Executive function skills, such as planning, organizing and strategizing. These skills help children develop self-regulation, working memory and cognitive flexibility which will encourage them to learn new ideas and develop their socialemotional capabilities. 5. Employers highly value the 4Cs.Hiring managers pay close attention to a job candidate’s abilities to communicate, collaborate and think critically and creatively. Encouraging young children to build these skills can help set them up for success later on. Submitted by Nicole Bigham, of the Goddard School.

Money Matters If you’re a dad, you may well be pleased to unwrap some tools as Father’s Day gifts. In fact, the construction process is valuable for anyone to learn – and the same skills that go in to creating and mending physical objects also can be applied to financial projects – such as working toward a comfortable retirement. Here are a few of those skills: • Diagnosing the challenge – For example, if you want to build some bookshelves right into the wall, you’ll need to locate the wall studs, determine if you have adequate space for the shelving you want and allow room for future expansion. Similarly, if you want to retire at a certain age, you need to consider the key variables: your current and future income (How much can you count on from your retirement plans?), where you’ll live (Will you downsize or relocate?) And what you’ll do as a retiree (Will you travel extensively or stick close to home?). • Assembling the right tools and materials – To put together your bookshelf, you will need the right tools and the right building materials. And
to work toward a comfortable retirement, you’ll also need the right tool – in the form of a long-term financial strategy, based on your specific retirement goals, risk tolerance and time horizon – along with the appropriate materials – the mix of investments you use to carry out that strategy. • Review your work – Once you’ve finished your bookshelf, you occasionally may need to make some minor adjustments or repairs in response to slippage, cracks or other issues that can develop over time. As an investor, you also may need to tweak your financial strategy periodically and adjust your investment mix – not necessarily because something is broken, but to accommodate changes in your life, such as a new job, new family situation and new goals. Furthermore, over time, your risk tolerance may change, and this needs to be reflected in your array of investments. Tools are a big deal on Father’s Day. But the construction-related tasks they represent, physically and symbolically, go beyond any one holiday and can be used by anyone interested in working toward a solid financial future. Safe & Secure There is no denying that teenagers and children equate summer with freedom: curfews are relaxed, everyday feels as though it is a weekend with one big difference; many parents are not around because they have jobs and regular work schedules. Thus, the possibility for trouble increases during these months. During this unsupervised time June and July there is a dramatic 40 percent increase in the number of youths who try marijuana for the first time. And marijuana use is not the only drug that is on the rise. Prescription drug abuse is becoming more prominent than ever. Available through online pharmacies and the nearest medicine cabinet, the ease of accessibility makes abusing prescription drugs very enticing. In fact, the 2018 Arizona Youth Survey conducted by the Arizona Criminal Justice Commission identifies that 36 percent of Buckeye youth who misused Rx drugs obtained them from home and 33 percent obtained them from a family member or relative. So, as summer approaches, and with these statistics in mind, parents need to be more involved in their teen’s life. Freedom from school does not mean freedom from responsibility, and
parents can take a number of steps to ensure that this message gets through to their teenagers.
1.Plan regular check-in times, but don’t rely solely on your child. Ask them to call you when they wake up, after lunch, or at a specific time of day; but it shouldn’t be the only conversation you have with them. Call your teenager(s) at different times of the day so they get the message that you want to know what they are doing. 2.Team up with neighbors and the parents of your teen’s friends. It is a good idea to create a network of responsible adults that you know will be home during your work hours to help monitor your child. Also, be sure that your teen and/or younger children know who these people are, as they can also serve as emergency contacts. 3.Layout the daily responsibilities your teen will be expected to accomplish before they engage in other activities. (e.g., making their bed, emptying the trash, doing dishes, babysitting) 4.Secure alcohol around your home in a cabinet or storage place that your teenager cannot open. 5.Secure prescription drugs around your home in a locked cabinet or storage place that your teenager cannot get to as well. Digital Decluttering There’s an aspect of tidying up that most of us may be forgetting: our digital clutter. From pictures that are taking up memory on your phone, to hundreds of old texts that are eating up your gigabytes, there are plenty of things you can digitally declutter, and once you get started, you’ll be amazed at how zen you’ll feel.
1. Organize your photos: Photos are notorious for taking up a ton of space, and can add up quickly if you don’t regularly back them up. To get started, find a free cloud-based service to help organize your pictures. As you upload, make sure to select “delete after uploading” to kill two birds with one stone and save a little time. 2. Delete old texts: Text conversations can pile up fast and take up valuable storage, especially if they contain images or videos. There’s no need to keep unimportant ones around. As you go through your messages, save only the vital conversations you’d need to keep as a record or for reference, otherwise, send them to the trash!
3.Tidy up your email: Tidy up your inbox by taking some time to delete all junk and trash messages, and then organize further by adding folders where you can store likeminded emails. 4. Delete unused apps: Apps not only take up your device’s memory, but can make for a cluttered screen too. If you find yourself consistently scrolling left and right trying to locate an app, that may be a sign that you have too many, or just need a little organization. Pare down your apps by deleting the ones that you never use. Then move the ones you use most frequently to the first screen, leaving lesser-used apps toward the back. 5. Clean up your desktop: Finally, find a quick 15 minutes to clean up your computer’s desktop. Having rogue folders labeled “miscellaneous” and random icons cluttering up your screen can make it difficult to find what you actually need at a moment’s notice. So this season, when you’re gearing up to spring clean your home, don’t forget to digitally declutter too!
