From Me To You... Welcome to the June edition of Main Street magazine!

As a child my parents were god-like to me. They knew everything. They could kiss away my injuries, drive me anywhere without getting lost and answer all my questions with sincerity and authority. Remember, this was before Google which makes that feat even more impressive. Then the teenage years arrived. I was full of angst and the belief that I absolutely, positively knew everything. By default this meant that my heretofore adored parents now knew nothing. Less than nothing, because they were embarrassing me with their lack of intelligence. I know, I am cringing too as I write this. I was horrible and my only saving grace is that I am not alone. Look in the mirror, you know you were a piece of work as a teenager too. Let us fast-forward to the time of my awakening, or as I like to call it parenting 101. I had these squealing, crying, frustrating balls of joy and I again knew nothing. The calls to my Mum became less self assured and more frantic. “Why is she still crying?” “What should I feed her?” “How do I stop them fighting?” “For the love of Mike, what is that smell?” “Will I ever sleep again?” and my personal favorite whispered one late night as I prepared for the birth of my second child, “Can I possibly have enough love left over for another child when this one has already filled my heart?” The answer, if you are curious, was that you don’t have to share the love, it doubles.

Now we are travelling along a road of companionship. Equals in our lack of real knowledge, swimming against the current together. There is a wall coming up that I know will be hard to climb, the time when I will be responsible for their well being. When I will have to provide the answers to questions I do not want to hear. The hard conversations about when to stop driving, where they want to live if their health declines, and end of life care including quality of life. I read a book recently that had an enlightening perspective on that. You should ask your parents what quality of life means to them. Is it the ability to finish a crossword or just to enjoy the taste of chocolate ice-cream? Is their life not worth holding on to if they can’t communicate with their family or when self mobility is lost? Everyone has a different response and not one is wrong. Once you have the answers to those questions, the book comforts, the other decisions have less weight. Whenever that time comes I will face it head on, even though as life comes full circle, I am again the one who knows nothing.

On Our Cover

The Craft Club of Verrado began in December of 2015 and the first few years were a whirlwind for Karla Gable and Carole Thomson as they led all of the classes, and funded the activities. In early 2017 Yvonne Vonsh, Janet Winje and Marti Wilson offered to join the Leadership Team, we are grateful for their help, leadership skills, expertise, and friendship. We now have occasional guest teachers from Verrado who will present a project and teach a new skill. Our goal is to teach the membership how to make a specific craft, use the tools, and mediums and to expand their horizons in the crafting world.

The projects the members have completed include Modge Podge on glass, string art, jewelry, wind spirals from recycled water bottles, mosaic stepping stones, wooden sign-love and luck, zen doodle, ice dyed fabric, snowman/santa terra cotta pot, grape cork trivet and beaded tree of life. Previously completed crafts can be viewed on the Facebook page, Keep Calm and Craft On - Craft Club of Verrado. Complimentary sessions are provided in December to thank participants for their membership, where members have completed a button bracelet and holiday gift tags.

Holidays event. The Craft Club prepares gift baskets for the Home Lighting Competition at Christmas, in addition they have participated in the Self Love event at “The New Life Center a shelter for domestic violence. The club provides a gift basket to The Feed My Starving Children fundraising event at the Founders Day Picnic in conjunction with offering a craft project for the children. On December 2, 2018 we are co-hosting the Artisan Market of Verrado with The West Valley Arts, a non profit focused on bringing arts and music to the West Valley. Local Artisans will have their wares for sale as the Holiday Season begins. The Craft Club of Verrado is an amazing group of kindred spirits. Those interested in participating are asked to contact us o Facebook - Keep Calm and Craft On Craft Club of Verrado or by email to carolethomson2@gmail.com. Happy Crafting! Carole Thomson

We meet the 1st & 3rd Tuesday of the month from November through April at The Center on Main from 11am to 1pm. The cost is $10 per person unless we have a guest teacher and the cost is up to $25 depending on their material requirements. In May of 2018 the group will have a summer session under the tutelage of Yvonne Vonsh, Janet Winje and Marti Wilson, the meetings will be the first Thursday of the month at The Center on Main from 11 to 1pm. The Craft Club has participated in many charitable projects including the Verrado Hometown Holidays Celebration where 500 ornaments were crafted with children from the community. Home Sweet Home Some of the biggest mistakes made by Sellers when hiring a Listing Agent to sell their home are: 1. Hiring a Friend or Family member that is a licensed real estate agent. 2. Going with the agent that gives you the Highest List Price for your home. 3. Choosing an agent that reduces their rate, offering the lowest commission.

Everyone knows a friend or neighbor that has a real estate license, but are they actually the best person for the job? Make sure you are thorough when checking your Realtor’s qualifications, how many homes have they sold? Get references. What is their Marketing approach and outreach? Ask about education. This is a people business and you want someone that is likeable yet aggressive when it comes to negotiating. One of the most important characteristics is honesty, you want an agent that speaks from the heart and offers you a personal guarantee that they are working for you, in your best interest. Although it is key to align yourself with an agent that you believe you can trust, choosing a family member or friend can often lead to disaster.

Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

The selling process can get tense; the last thing you want to worry about is what might happen to your relationship if you had to fire your friend or family member to get your home sold. In today’s market, your home must be properly marketed in order to sell it. If your agent doesn’t have a proven marketing strategy that consists of the following you may want to second guess hiring them. These are the must haves when properly marketing your home: Professional Photography, 3D Virtual Tours, Video Tours, Color Flyers, prominent placement in real estate search engines, professional website, Social Media, Print advertising/Direct Mail, MLS, Broker Tours, Open Houses and advice on staging your home. Your best chance to sell your home is in the first 30-60 days depending on market. To give yourself the best chance to sell, you must align yourself with a proven professional with experience in closing. Marketing is crucial when selling your most valuable asset, so do your duediligence and hire a full-time professional Realtor. The Doctor Is In GERD and Stomach Acid Problems 20% of the U.S. population now has GERD, and 79.4 million prescriptions for it are written each year. But 30% will continue to suffer from GERD despite prescriptions whose side effects are even worse than the GERD. What is happening? Throughout the day we constantly produce stomach acid that assists us in digesting food and killing harmful bacteria. Our intestinal tract is like a conveyor belt that continually pushes our intestinal contents forward. This conveyor belt is primarily under the control of the neurological network called the Autonomic Nervous System. The Autonomics are responsible for the contractions that empty the stomach and move food through the small and large intestine. The autonomic parasympathetic branch is primarily responsible for those contractions.

Making symptoms even worse, the abnormal SIBO bacteria in the upper intestine are capable of sending a signal up the Autonomic Vagus nerve telling the brain to slow down the intestinal track and not empty the

stomach. Damage to the Autonomics may occur from physical traumas such as concussions, traumatic brain injuries, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, stroke, infections, emotional trauma, or pregnancy. Any of these events may subtly affect your Autonomic Nervous System causing your stomach not to empty correctly. If you are experiencing heartburn and GERD then getting to the root of the problem is by the improvement or recovery of normal Autonomic parasympathetic function and proper control over SIBO overgrowth. Heartburn occurs when the esophagus is exposed to stomach acid. While the stomach is contracting, the valve between the esophagus and the stomach needs to remain tightly closed otherwise the acid can splash backwards and stimulate nerve endings in the esophagus. This causes the symptoms commonly referred to as heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD can be associated with a burning sensation in the chest sometimes so bad it mimics a heart attack, belching, a bitter taste, coughing, and wheezing. Strangely, sometimes the refluxing acid will not cause any pain (silent reflux), can cause exacerbation of asthma after eating, and trigger recurrent sinus and middle ear infections. Autonomic dysfunction may be from damage to the nerves themselves, medications, or an imbalance of intestinal bacteria called small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). Ironically medicines, even OTC, that control stomach acid can encourage SIBO overgrowth. 8 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

Life As A Caregiver

Expectation and Acceptance

My mother is in a care facility for Alzheimer’s disease. Those words are still hard for me to say out loud sometimes. In fact, I can be out to lunch with friends, or at a meeting and those words hit me like a bolt of lightning and the tears begin to fall. She IS in a care facility. And it’s a nice one. It’s clean, spacious, nicely appointed and not far from my home. The staff is attentive, knowledgeable, and always trying to make her comfortable. She is indeed well cared-for in her new surroundings. And I am grateful. But all she seems to do is sleep when I’m there. No more conversations about whatever, no more football, no more Wheel of Fortune. When I come to visit she sometimes knows it’s me–sometimes doesn’t. She generally keeps her eyes shut so the light can’t get in. And occasionally she will smile & call me honey when I talk to her….but not too often. The first few visits left me terribly sad when I would leave. But then that word “expectation” crept into my head. I wanted her to be a certain way and expected that it would be so. But the reality was that it was NOT going to be that way….anymore. I always tell people the hardest part of caring for someone with Alzheimer’s is trying to get over the denial part. Be more

accepting of it. And yet, the word “expectation” is often ignored.

Expectation is defined as ‘the degree of probability that something will occur; the act or state of looking forward or anticipating’. My expectation of visits with my mom would be that I would walk into the room and she would give me that warm, loving and wonderful smile, and be almost gleeful that I had arrived. And when that wasn’t the case, I would be hugely disappointed and saddened. I couldn’t change her mood. I was powerless. I didn’t matter anymore. Well—once I stopped making it about ME, expected less and accepted the reality of the disease and taking each moment one day at a time, things got better for me. I would sit and hold her hand, make sure she was comfortable, relish every smile…and leave knowing that this was the best it was going to be at the moment. That she was in good hands and not under my day-to-day care where I would be stressed and frustrated… and inept. I still am her advocate, however, checking to be sure the care she is receiving is gentle, thorough and done with affection. Which it is. I had suspected she might be suffering from depression…a common symptom of Alzheimer’s. So, the staff called her doctor, brought her in for a bit of testing and he prescribed a mild medicine to help with that. It seems to have made a slight improvement. But slight is welcomed! The take-away here is this: expectation in anything can be your worst enemy if we let it knock us down because it didn’t measure up to what we want or need. Acceptance can be our salvation…or our downfall, depending on how we interpret it. I’m going with taking a deep breath, doing what I can for her while I’m visiting, and knowing that the situation is what it is. And… praying for strength. Furry Friends The official start of summer is right around the corner, yet we are already feeling the heat here in the desert! To ensure that your furry friends have a safe and fun summer, please consider these Pet-Friendly Tips. Keep your pet’s environment climate controlled. AC works best, along with kiddiesized pools that they can cool off in. And of course, never leave your pets in a hot car even for a moment, especially in this AZ sun! Prepare your pet’s coat and skin for summer. A well-groomed coat allows air circulation at the skin’s surface and allows heat to transfer out of the body. Vet-approved sunscreen for dogs can be helpful as well for light-colored or thin-coated pets. Schedule your pet’s activity during cooler times of the day. Offer rest, shade, and hydration at least every 15 minutes during exercise. With monsoon season on its way, please keep a watchful eye out for rattlesnakes and Sonoran Dessert toads. They enjoy the cooler times of day as well.

12 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

More Water, Please! If you pup is looking up at you with endearing eyes, you may think he wants a tasty treat, although perhaps he is begging for more water. Your pet’s body is 80% water, which is at least 20% more than us humans. Pets need one ounce of water per pound of body weight. Provide fresh, clean water daily. Monitor your pet’s water intake, especially in these hot summer days. Sunken eyes, lethargy, and loss of appetite are a few of the signs of dehydration. When in doubt, please contact your trusted vet. As a reminder, there are no Junior Division meetings for the months of June or July. We will resume in August. New members are always welcome to join! For more information, please email: juniordivision@communitypaws.org Did you know? June 8th is Best Friends Day. Best friends are the best! Take some time today to celebrate with your besties, especially your furry BFFs who are always there to shower you with their unconditional love and slobbering kisses. Thank you to everyone who attended Unkegged, our very first Beer & BBQ event in Verrado. We are grateful for your kindness and generosity in supporting our mission. #VeryVerrado I would be lying if I said that my family doesn’t spend a lot of time eating and being social in Verrado. There is something to be said about a small town, where everyone knows your name.

Steve and Karen Maynard are part of our community, owners of Tempo Urban Bistro. They moved to AZ in 2006 for a job transfer through Karen’s work. At the time, they were empty nesters in a new state, AZ, and knew no-one. They left behind three grown daughters in New York and started anew in Verrado. As Karen shared, “it took us almost a year to meet people, and that combined with our goal to open a restaurant, brought us to Verrado”. They saved all the unique décor that lines the walls in their garage, waiting until the day they could open their restaurant. Steven has been a chef for over 30 years, starting in his Grandmother’s kitchen learning to cook. Love in his family was expressed through preparing and eating food. One might ask, why Tempo? Karen shared, “Tempo is defined as the rhythm and heartbeat, the center of all things good. We wanted Tempo to be a gathering place for everyone. We wanted each dish prepared as an offering of a piece of our family to yours.” Meet some of our other amazing neighbors that work there - we love Mike, who also lives in Verrado with his wife and kids. Moranda, who drives a motorcycle and Rick, my trivia night teammate. And then there is Hector, who has been with Steve and Karen since the day the

doors opened and lives in Verrado with his family.

Fire Safety

Think of all the items you replace regularly - your cellphone, lightbulbs and even your toothbrush. But when was the last time you replaced your smoke alarm batteries, or even the alarms themselves? It’s easy to overlook, but the time to think about fire safety is now - before an emergency strikes. Many assume that because they have smoke alarms in their homes, they’re protected in the event of a fire. In reality, smoke alarms need to be installed, maintained and tested regularly to ensure they’re working properly. The fact remains that all smoke alarms - even hardwired and sealed battery models - expire after 10 years. First Alert offers the following advice to ensure your family is best protected from fire. Count the alarms - In most cases, one alarm isn’t enough. In fact, the U.S. Fire Administration, recommends smoke alarms be installed inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement, as well as one carbon monoxide alarm on each level and in each sleeping area.

at least 10 feet from a cooking appliance to minimize false alarms. It’s also recommended to install smoke alarms high on walls or ceilings. Remember, smoke rises, so high placement provides a direct path for detection. Lastly, don’t install smoke alarms near windows, doors or ducts, where drafts might interfere with their operation. Install and maintain - Having smoke alarms is only one part of the story. In order to function properly, all alarms must be regularly inspected and maintained. Make sure to test the alarm, by simply holding down the test button, at least once a month. Also, when testing, it’s important to clean the alarm to remove any dust or debris. Check or replace the battery when you change the time on your clocks each spring and fall. Plan your escape - Maintaining alarms is essential to every household, but what about your escape route? To develop an effective plan, walk through your home and inspect all possible exits and escape routes. Identify two ways out of each room, including windows and doors. Practice your home fire escape plan at least twice a year and make sure to plan a meeting spot. For more fire safety tips, visit www.firstalert.com.

Install them properly - Does your alarm ever sound when cooking? Chances are, you’ve installed the alarm too close to your appliances. Smoke alarms should generally be installed

The Bug Guy Who invented the Fly swatter?

The first modern fly-destruction device was invented in 1900 by Robert R. Montgomery, an entrepreneur based in Decatur, Ill. Montgomery was issued Patent No. 640,790 for the FlyKiller, a “cheap device of unusual elasticity and durability” made of wire netting, “preferably oblong,” attached to a handle. The material of the handle remained unspecified, but the netting was crucial: it reduced wind drag, giving the swatter a “whiplike swing.” By 1901, Montgomery’s invention was advertised in Ladies’ Home Journal as a tool that “kills without crushing” and “soils nothing,” unlike, say, a rolled-up newspaper might. Montgomery sold the patent rights in 1903 to an industrialist named John L. Bennett, who later invented the beer can. Bennett improved the design — stitching around the edge of the netting to keep it from fraying — but left the name.

Crumbine, secretary of the Kansas Board of Health. In 1905, he titled one of his fly bulletins, which warned of flyborne diseases, “Swat the Fly,” after a chant he heard at a ballgame. Crumbine took an invention known as the Fly Bat — a screen attached to a yardstick — and renamed it the Fly Swatter, which became the generic term we use today. Fly-killing technology has advanced to include fly zappers (electrified tennis rackets that roast flies on contact) and fly guns (spinning discs that mulch insects). But there will always be less techy solutions: flypaper (sticky tape that traps the bugs), Fly Bottles (glass containers lined with an attractive liquid substance) and the Venus’ flytrap (a plant that eats insects). During a 2009 CNBC interview, President Obama killed a fly with his bare hands, triumphantly exclaiming, “I got the sucker!” PETA was less gleeful, calling it a public “execution” and sending the White House a device that traps flies so that they may be set free. Credit Hope Reeves, New York Times. Brought to you by Estrella Mountain Pest Control.

The various fly-killing implements on the market at the time got the name “swatter” from Samuel COVER AD

Money Matters

investing is not a “get-rich-quick” scheme, but a process that requires decades of diligence and persistence. Let your children know that it’s of great value to start investing as early as possible.

Father’s Day is almost upon us. If you’re a dad, you certainly may enjoy getting cards and gifts, of course. But, over time, you will gain even greater satisfaction by giving your children valuable financial lessons.

Living within your means – We all know that you can’t always get what you want. Stress to your children that you can’t just splurge on big purchases whenever you feel like it, because such behavior can lead to bad outcomes.

Setting goals – If you are contributing to an IRA and a 401(k), explain how you build these accounts now, so you’ll have enough money to enjoy a comfortable retirement someday. And you can bring your children into the picture by telling them that another financial goal is saving enough to help send them to college.

Paying debts on time – Tell your children that, no matter how good a saver you are, or how thrifty you try to be, you still have debts, such as your mortgage payment, and it’s important to pay these debts on time. You may not want to get too detailed about the consequences of missing debt payments but you can certainly mention that if you’re always late on payments, you might find it harder to borrow money when you really need it.

Value of understanding the financial markets – You may actually be quite surprised at how interested your kids are in investing, especially the concept of “owning” companies through stocks and stock-based vehicles. Depending on their ages, you might even want to show them the progress of your own investments and describe, in general terms, how different events can cause the markets to rise and fall. Putting time on your side – You might want to emphasize the importance of patience, and how

By sharing these principles with your children, you will give them something to think about, and you may well find that you’ve helped start them on the path to a lifetime of making solid financial moves. And who knows? If they truly master the ideas you’ve taught them, one day they might give you some really nice Father’s Day gifts. Positive Parenting One of the best habits you can teach your son or daughter is the habit of goal setting. The best news; you can start this immediately by having your kids set goals for the summer. Keep it simple; let’s say no more than three goals. Maybe set one for health and wellness, another for personal growth and a third for something they are passionate about. What are the benefits of goal setting? • Builds self-confidence • Builds self-esteem • Focus energy in a positive direction • Builds a track record (memories) of successes • Tends to keep one focused on the future rather than the past • Less likely to get distracted by the drama and the garbage of life This is a great way to communicate with your child. Imagine if you set and shared your goals too. What a great way to deepen the relationship. You may find yourself saying things like: • “Let’s turn that into a goal.” • “That would make a great goal!” • “Have you ever thought of making that a goal?” • “What would your goal be?”

set a goal of getting 100% on every spelling test for the school year. Immediately my unrealistic goal buzzer went off. I was able to have him change his goal to get 100 % on three-quarter of his tests. Together we made a chart that tracked progress each week and placed it on his bulletin board. By mid-April he reached his goal. It’s not about the goal; it’s about the key word – HABIT. Think of this as practice. When August rolls around they will be ready to set goals for the school year! Here’s a tip to create buy-in: Go to the store with your child for the purpose of buying a “goal notebook.” Check in to see progress and when the goal is complete make a big deal about checking it off! Imagine if your son or daughter develops the “habit of goal setting.” Where could they take their life? When should you start? I started with my youngest child when he was in kindergarten. He had goals like campout with his father, build a fort, and go to Cedar Point. These were all things I, as a parent, could help him accomplish. My goal as a parent was to help my son develop a track record of success. I was able to check that goal off! The Basics: 1. Must be in writing 2. Stated in a sentence 3. Must be their goal…not yours – so important! 4. Stated in a positive way. Rather than setting a goal of “not” sleeping after 9 a.m., the goal would be to be out of bed before 9 a.m. 5. Must be realistic – my middle son wanted to 24 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine
