From Me To You... We are at a new stage in our lives, we have finally arrived at our Empty Nest. It feels like an amazing achievement to be honest. I have had the responsibility of raising children since 1988 (with one year off for good behavior) and I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I am so proud of the adults we have raised who are leading their lives and forging their own paths. But before I can truly hand off all responsibility, I have to get the last two to the finish line - graduation and college. I just wound up two sets of final college tours, and let me tell you, I learned a few interesting things along the way. Not about college or even raising children. About the Wonderful World of Travel. That is what my life has become of late. From Mom to travel agent in one easy step. Between scouring the internet for airfares, arranging hotel accommodation, and transportation at the college, I have barely had time to catch my breath. I did discover a way to save money on flights in the process. I was searching for cheap flights from Phoenix to Pullman, Washington. I know the normal routes and airlines that service

them, but during my search a new option popped up. I didn’t want to book with the cut-rate site that had the deal, but they did show me how to get my son from here to Pullman in less time, and saved me $300 in the process - book separate tickets through two different airlines! That moment when I had purchased the first fare and was trying to secure a seat on the next one gave me chills, but it all worked out in the end. He made it there and is on his way back as I write this. This was his first solo adventure and although I was nervous that something would go wrong, he navigated it with ease. He even got to play in the snow, in April... The upside of that experience is that I know he is going to be just fine on his own, and that eases the transition into the next stage of our lives. But is it truly an empty nest? Not really, they are all still there with us, we just have to loosen the reins and let them do it on their own from here.

Community Pride Who We Are: Verrado Community Pride (VCP) is a resident advocacy group working closely with the Verrado Community Association (VCA) to help residents understand, and address concerns related to Verrado to include community structure, landscape and water utilization, roads and traffic, budget, and governance.

Roads and Traffic: Ray Clarke is working with City and County officials regarding future development of routes into and out of Verrado as there is no comprehensive traffic plan for the area. The various roads are under different City, County and State jurisdictions. Currently, we are working to obtain improvements to traffic flow from Indian School Rd and JackRabbit Trail to the 303.

Landscape and Water Utilization Dave Katz is working with the Landscape Committee and Gothic to develop an overall landscape maintenance schedule so that residents can see when their area or neighborhood is due to be maintained. The process of updating the Verrado irrigation system from poly tubing to PVC is proceeding. Phase 1 is nearly completed; Phase 2 is done and work has started on Phase 3. The majority of Verrado’s original irrigation controllers are beyond their useful lives and are being replaced with more efficient models connected with 5G modems to a central station. Governance: All the elected members of VCA both past and present (Dave Katz, Ray Clarke and Lance Miyatovich) developed their knowledge and understandings of the issues facing the Verrado community by being active members of Verrado Community Pride. VCP has a proven track record on being on the right side of the governance issues that have faced the community over the last 5 years. Budget: Ray Clarke and Lance Miyatovich established the VCA Budget and Finance committee which is composed of Verrado residents who help guide and shape the VCA budget, and are responsible for ongoing recommendations of annual increases or decreases in monthly Association fees. Resident Involvement: If you are genuinely interested in getting involved, providing input, or offering leadership that will help address the important issues that will confront Verrado and its residents in the coming years, we invite you to attend our next meeting, which will be held at the Center on Main on Monday May 2, 2022 at 6:30 pm.

The Dr. Is In!

As a parent, seeing your child struggling can be overwhelming. Between 2016 and 2020, the rates of depression and anxiety in children and adolescents increased by over 25 percent. Unfortunately, these rates have continued to rise since 2020 as a result of the stress and changes from the COVID-19 pandemic. What can you as a parent do to support your child? 1. Encourage your child to talk about how they are feeling and work to increase your child’s emotional literacy. 2. Limit screen time- this one is SO hard, I get it! Unfortunately, research has shown that for every hour above 1 hour of screen time per day there is an exponential increase in depression and anxiety. 3. Know the signs of when to get helpnoticeable changes in appetite and sleep

(increases or decreases), changes in mood such as irritability and isolating, a drop in grades, and/ or less activity. The signs are not always the same for kids and adults. 4. Spend positive and productive time together as a family talking, playing games or being outside (fresh air, activity and sunlight are linked to decreased depression and anxiety). Families who know me or follow Periscope Pediatrics, know I frequently recommend the UnGame as a great way to have meaningful and deep conversations with your children in a less intrusive way. This can be done in combination with a game like UNO or Jenga or have everyone draw a card at the dinner table to get the conversation flowing. 5. If your child comes to you to discuss depression, anxiety or even suicidal thoughts, DON’T take it personally and DO take it seriously. Remain supportive and understand how hard (and scary) it likely was for them to come to you about what they are experiencing 6. Don’t be afraid to get help. Fortunately, resources are available: from teen suicide hotlines to the Crisis team who will come to your house to evaluate if your child needs a higher level of care for mental health concerns to your school counselor, short term resources abound. Just know, you and your child are not alone; this has been a difficult time for everyone and many children are struggling- your child’s mental health is not a reflection of your parenting!!! And above all, remember you are not alone! Submitted by Counselor Amber- Periscope Pediatrics

A Good Night’s Sleep

Getting enough sleep is important, especially for a child. A good night’s sleep can lead to better focus, more energy and better overall mental wellness. However, it can sometimes be challenging for your child to get to sleep and stay asleep. Here are some tips on easing your child into bedtime.

1. Establish a bedtime routine. Allow your child time to wind down about 30 minutes before bedtime. Ask her to brush her teeth, put on her pajamas and get into bed. You can also spend a few minutes reading to her. 2. Limit screen time. Ask your child to turn off all electronic devices about an hour before he gets ready for bed. The light devices emit may suppress the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin, making it harder to get to sleep. 3. Avoid sugar and caffeine. Limit sugary foods and drinks a few hours before bed and avoid

®

caffeine (like soda or chocolate) at least eight hours before bed. 4. Create a sleep-friendly environment. Make sure your child’s bedroom is quiet, dark and comfortable. You can buy blackout curtains to keep out any light. If your child doesn’t like absolute silence, consider using a white noise machine. 5. Set rules. Pick a bedtime and be firm about it. If you read bedtime stories, set a limit on how many books or how much of a book you will read. If your child has a tendency to call for you, come up with an acceptable list of reasons for your child to call you and stick to that list. Setting clear limits can help maintain healthy sleep habits. Submitted by Nicole Bigham, On-site Owner, The Goddard School in Buckeye-Verrado

The Bug Guy

When you have pests in your home, whether insects or animals, you want them gone quickly. No one wants to live with bugs, mice, or other pests. It’s tempting to call the first exterminator that you come across. That’s not a good idea. Like any professional service provider, some exterminators are better than others. When your safety and the comfort of your home depend on it, it’s important to take the time to find a good exterminator. 1. Make Sure the Exterminator Is Licensed, And Insured - Make sure that anyone you are considering has a recent license and is insured. Most exterminators will have a general liability insurance policy. 2. Reputation - A good exterminator will have a strong reputation. Do a little digging online to review their history and record. Check with the

Better Business Bureau to see what their rating is. Look for online reviews too. How long has the company been around? Consider asking friends for recommendations. If you have a few exterminators in mind, and you’re not sure which one is going to be the best fit, consider asking for references. 3. Policies and Plans - Finally, ask about what their treatment plan entails. What pests do they treat and how do they treat them? What chemicals do they use? How will the pesticides be applied? Are alternatives available and what is their cost? Do they offer integrated pest management? This is a type of pest management that strives to minimize the use of pesticides. If pesticides are required, do they offer instructions or recommendations to reduce your exposure? And do they offer a plan to protect your home against future pest problems? Do they use a multidisciplinary approach where they use a variety of methods to clear your home of pests? You’ll also want to ask if there is a guarantee. Most exterminators do guarantee their work. However, some will have exceptions and exclusions. Find out what those exceptions and exclusions are. When you are eliminating pests from your home it pays to do your homework. Compare exterminators based on their reputation, policies, and of course by their price. It is possible to find a good exterminator, one that you can trust with your home and your health. Money Matters

Life doesn’t always go as planned. For example, you might think you’ll retire at 65 or later, when you’ll be eligible for Medicare. But if you retire before then, how will you pay for your health care? Without insurance, you risk incurring thousands of dollars of expenses if you are injured or become seriously ill. And if you must pay for these costs out of pocket, you might have to dip into your IRA, 401(k) or other retirement accounts earlier than you had planned – which could result in a less desirable retirement lifestyle than you had envisioned.

What, then, are your options? It depends on your situation, but here are four possibilities: • Employer retiree health benefits – If your former employer offers health coverage to retirees, it could well be your best choice, especially if the employer continues to pay a share of the premiums. However, fewer

employers are offering continuing health coverage to former employees. • Spouse’s plan – If you’re married and your spouse still has employerprovided insurance, you may be able to get coverage under this plan or continue this coverage if you have it already. If the employer subsidizes premiums for spouses, this plan could be an affordable choice. • COBRA – The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) allows you to maintain your existing coverage with the same benefits and provider network. However, COBRA is typically only available for a specific time – usually 18 months – after you leave your employer, and coverage can be expensive. • ACA Marketplace plan – Through the Affordable Care Act Marketplace, you can find a variety of plans from which to choose, possibly including ones that include your existing network. If you qualify for subsidies, the premiums for your coverage may be similar to employer-sponsored coverage. For information on ACA Marketplace plans, visit www.healthcare. gov. Even when you do enroll in Medicare, you will still incur expenses for premiums, deductibles and co-pays, so you’ll want to budget for these costs in your overall financial strategy. In the meantime, explore your health insurance options. The future is not ours to see – so you’ll want to be prepared for anything. Going EV?

Electric vehicles (EVs) are increasing in popularity as drivers consider the operating cost of owning an automobile as well as the environmental impact of their commutes. The number of electric vehicle models available has nearly doubled in the last few years and the market is getting charged up. The rising demand for electric vehicles has led to a larger inventory of new and used plug-ins in the auto market. “EVs have high safety ratings and offer a quieter ride,” said Kevin Quinn, vice president of auto claims at Mercury Insurance. “Add in low maintenance costs and the opportunity to reduce a vehicle owner’s carbon footprint, and it becomes very appealing to consumers who are looking to buy a new car.” With more than 2 million electric cars on the road in the U.S., EV owners know that home charging is one of the most important aspects to owning an electric vehicle. Other than driving, cold weather zaps the batteries of energy quickly. Using the air conditioning or heater, as well as uphill drives, also reduce range. Knowing that

there might be more frequent charges under these demands makes home charging more appealing. According to the J.D. Power 2022 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Home Charging Study, 84% of EV owners regularly charge their vehicle at home. It costs about half as much to charge an EV at home as it does to charge at a public station. Home chargers also offer the convenience of being programmed so they draw power during off-peak hours, saving EV owners money. Most EVs come with a Level 1 charger allowing drivers to charge at their residence from a standard 120-volt household outlet. This method can take several hours, typically overnight, to get back most of the car’s range. For this reason, many EV owners purchase Level 2 charging stations to be installed in their home. Level 2 charging allows for a quicker charge using a 240volt outlet. EV owners can also charge their vehicles with portable chargers, but how owners obtained those chargers could make a difference on which type of insurance would be needed. If the portable charger came from the dealership with the vehicle, it would be covered by their auto collision or comprehensive insurance. However, if EV owners purchase a portable charger after buying their vehicle, they may need special equipment coverage. While reports of fires happening while EVs are parked and charging are rare, owners should always be mindful when charging their vehicles. “Electric vehicles are still relatively new to the marketplace so automakers are still perfecting them,” said Lee. “EV owners need to do their due diligence and make sure they’re properly educated about their manufacturer’s recommendations for proper charging.”

Try this recipe for a protein boost:

Days are getting longer, temps are warming up, and you have lots of plans - but do you lack the energy to make them happen? Fortunately, simple meal and snack swaps, plus new approaches to your exercise routine, can help get you moving again. For better long-term energy and nutrition, try: * Apples - Apples provide filling fiber, vitamin C and antioxidants. * Avocados - These are a great source of heartfriendly monounsaturated fat, plus oleic acid, folate and vitamin E. * Nuts - Most nuts combine protein, healthy fats and fiber that help you feel full, so you’re less likely to experience energy dips. * Leafy green vegetables - Spinach is one example, full of nutrients like fiber, iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, vitamins A, C, E and K - plus energy-boosting iron. Add spinach to any egg dish, soup or salad. * Fatty fish - Salmon is popular for good reason, as it’s flavorful plus full of protein and hearthealthy omega-3 fatty acids to fill you up and minimize blood sugar swings.
