From Me To You...

Things I will miss when we get back to ‘normal’.

My family at home. When this lockdown started, my adult child came home from college, my high school child stayed home from school and my other adult child had just moved home to save money and get back on her feet. At first it was tense and fraught with bickering. Then things settled down. We play games together, laugh together, tease each other in a loving way and are genuinely creating a new relationship of peers. This would not have happened without having to live together for an extended period of time. And for that I am grateful.

Time off from working out. Before Corona (BC) my husband and I had been working out quite seriously for 18 months and if I have to be honest I was reluctantly enjoying it and the health benefits that ensued. Since lockdown we really have not been successful at staying on track and I have come to enjoy the relaxation and lack of guilt from missing a workout or two. And for that I am grateful.

Figuratively tightening our belts. (See last paragraph.) The necessity of spending less at this time, plus the forced inability to go out and spend as we used to, is liberating. I am frugal at heart as I was raised with a ‘make do with what you have’ attitude. Teaching my children that at this time has also been a good life lesson. Changing the Amazon password helped tremendously with that one. And for that I am grateful.

The beauty of our planet that is being revealed.

After only a few weeks we saw nature returning to our congested cities. Dolphins in Venice, seals scattered along coastlines usually crowded with tourists, goats taking over a Welsh town and record numbers of turtles hatching on beaches.

The most stunning image I have seen recently was the blue skies over the Taj Mahal. A before and after shot of the grey smog compared to the Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

sun shining on such a beautiful building shocked me. And for that I am grateful.

Renewed contact with relatives near and far. Once a week we Zoom with family on the East Coast. That was an interesting one.

As with my children, reconnecting on a regular basis has been challenging. I remember why I love them and also the things that irked me about them. At least there is a mute button when we need a break. And for that I am grateful.

Hugs. When I first came to America I found the practice of hugging invasive and intrusive. In England a polite nod or firm handshake is all that is required in almost any social setting. But not here. The first time you meet someone a hug could be involved. Step back to put some distance between you and the newcomer and you can be seen as cold and unwelcoming.

Navigating the social requirements was always intimidating. Not anymore. Now I look forward to the act of reassuring someone with my presence, a hug can say so much more that a polite handshake. And for that I have learned to be grateful.

I know we will return to our old ways soon enough and life will, indeed go on. Let us all try to be grateful for the lessons we have learned.

Family Caregivers AARP offers guidance to family caregivers with vulnerable family members, especially those who might be new to caregiving because of Coronavirus.

Make it a team effort Create a list with contact information of friends, family and services in your community that can help you perform key caregiving tasks.

For example, find out if services such as Meals on Wheels can help deliver meals, or if there are other local services to help with food or medication delivery.

Inventory essential items Inventory how much food, medication and basic supplies the person you’re caring for has currently. If possible, help them have a two-week supply of food, water, house cleaning supplies, and medical equipment.

Get medications in order Create a list of medications, medical contacts, and important information like allergies for easy access. If there are upcoming non-emergency

medical appointments, reschedule those or, if possible, switch to a virtual visit to receive telemedicine.

Ask your pharmacist or health care provider if you’re able to have an extra 30day supply of essential medications on hand.

Stay connected Current social distancing recommendations will impact many older individuals. To keep connections strong, set up communication using a variety of technology such as FaceTime or Skype, or simply phone and text. Use these to stay connected with your caregiving team as well as your older or aging family members. If your loved one lives in a long-term care facility, see if they have accommodations for online visits and how they plan to communicate with families.

Send in cards, letters, magazines, puzzles or other items you know your loved one would be grateful to receive. T Maintain personal safety and self-care While you are likely very focused on the person you’re caring for, it is essential to also care for yourself.

Helping Hands Whether it’s reprieve for families in self-isolation, support for those on the frontlines of healthcare and essential businesses, or keeping at-risk populations safe, now is the time to come together - while staying apart - to support one another.

Here are four simple ways that communities can take care of each other - all from their phones, computers or other devices.

1. Gaming and virtual hangouts: Board games, video games and puzzles are a great way to bring friends and family together even with hundreds of miles in between. Set up a virtual game night with a friend or send your online buddy a few extra digital gaming rewards for your favorite game together.

2. Grocery delivery good will: With so many facing uncertainty with their job in this challenging time, lack of time to shop or concerns about being inside of grocery stores, consider finding a way to bring the groceries

to them. Gifting grocery delivery to your friends and family allows them to purchase what they need while staying out of harm’s way. Sending a grocery gift card or digital gift card to the people in your life gives them the freedom to shop when they can - even when stores are closed.

3. Supporting restaurants and supporting others: As your favorite local restaurants shift to takeout, curbside and delivery-only models, there’s an opportunity to not only support restaurants, but also to provide support for those in need.

When placing an order for yourself, think about others in your life that could use a meal or gift card for takeout and perhaps send one or two to a friend on the hospital frontlines, first responders or someone you know in an essential retail role who could use a ready-to-eat meal after a long shift.

4. Streaming togetherness: Keeping your distance doesn’t need to mean you miss out on watch parties. We all have a favorite show or movie recommendation, so send the gift of a digital movie download or surprise friends and family with the gift of a subscription to your favorite streaming service. Then, plan a night with friends and family to watch your favorite show, and gather around the computer for a virtual watch party. Don’t forget the popcorn!

When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.

There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.”

There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown.

•

The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. It also allows for advertisers to re-position a brand or introduce

a new product.

Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times.

• Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, which can provide greater short-term sales growth, increases during a recession.

• When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current – and possibly future – sales.

An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.”

An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits.

•

Another strategy used by marketers is changing the ad message and using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. Some advertisers will offer interest-free loans, coupons or special promotions to boost sales and market share. When the economy bounces back, regular pricing can return. For some advertisers that don’t give cost incentives, they can change the ad message to being expensive but worth it.

Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand provides.

Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/ or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share.

Perhaps the best quote about advertising in a recession came from Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. When asked, “What do you think about a recession?” he responded, “I thought about it and decided not to participate.”

It has been proven that being in nature reduces stress levels. It has also been found that pets can have therapeutic benefits on our health as well. Naturally it would make sense that walking our pets in nature would have profound effects on our well-being. In these times of uncertainty, soak up the healing benefits of nature and help out rescue animals by using ResQwalk.

ResQwalk is a free mobile app that raises money for organizations that are partnered with Best Friends Animal Society Network, such as Community Paws. All you need to do is walk, run, or bike with your favorite pets.

Simply download ResQwalk for Android or iOS. After creating your profile, go to the “Leaderboard” tab, and type “Community Paws” in the search key at the top right corner. When you’re ready to start walking, go to “New Walk”.

Fact #3 - People in recovery from Substance Use Disorder (alcoholism and drug dependency) are among the most vulnerable during this pandemic. The act of isolation will help “flatten the curve” of the pandemic we face, and it will not allow Covid-19 to spread unchecked; but it is ironic that isolation is also the thing that is the most detrimental to the person battling addiction.

Addiction is a disease of isolation and part of the healing is owning up to others about your addiction. Support groups are very powerful in the journey of recovery and there are now many hurdles to achieving this kind of support and accountability. So, it is even more critical to reach out and care for those who are more vulnerable now in their recovery journey. We can encourage them to utilize the virtual options during this period of isolation.

The Bug Guy May brings a significant increase in scorpions, crickets, spiders, bees, and most every other bug that lives here. With many of you transitioning to working from home in response to the current pandemic, you will have a heightened awareness that bugs don’t care about social distancing, nope, not one bit. With above average rainfall last winter and spring, the environment is more suitable than ever for insects to flourish.

To reduce the potential of increased infestation in and around your home: • Don’t allow weeds to grow.

• Keep yard plants/foliage trimmed up from the ground at least 5-6 inches.

These efforts will reduce the hiding places for crickets and all manner of bugs that feed and hide around plants. Always remember that

where there are crickets, there will eventually be scorpions.

Spring also bring bee swarms. Bees that are in the form a ball or beard shape under an eave or attached to a tree branch are considered a swarm. In this form, they are typically resting as they look for a new place to make a hive. The purpose of the swarm is to protect the queen who is resting in the middle of the ball or beard.

Do Not Approach or interact with these bees as they are very protective of their queen and will sting. They will move on in 24-48 hours. If the location where they are resting creates an unsafe environment, it is recommended that you call a beekeeper to safely remove them. By using this method of removal, they can continue to pollinate crops and make honey which is a critical element of our agriculture process. Bees should not be killed unless necessary.

Rattlesnakes are very active at this time of year and can strike approximately two-thirds of the length of their body. The challenge is figuring out the length when they are coiled up and rattling. It is always a good idea to turn on your porch light and inspect the area before you or your pets step out onto your porch. If you find a rattlesnake on your property, call the police non-emergency line and request removal. You will have to keep an eye on it until they arrive in order to show them where it is. For your safety please don’t try to address an issue without training or experience.

Money Matters On one hand, the coronavirus has brought out the best in us. On the other hand, a small number of bad actors are taking advantage of the situation to try to defraud people. How can you guard against these virus-related scams?

For starters, be aware of three common scams connected to the coronavirus: Websites claiming to help and track the pandemic – Look out for websites that claim to help you work remotely or provide financial resources to the afflicted. These sites may try to trick you into giving up personal information, donate money or load malware onto your computer. Don’t trust “helpdesk” agents you don’t know. And check out any obscure organization claiming to help virus victims.

“Risk-free” or “guaranteed” investments – The coronavirus has caused two separate areas of stress. The first is the health concern, and the second is the financial/investment component.

The enormous volatility of the financial markets has caused much concern among investors, and scammers are seizing the opportunity to offer “risk-free” or “guaranteed” investments “perfect” for this particular time. Again, responding to these types of offers can bring you nothing but trouble. All investments carry risk of one type or another, and they typically don’t come with guarantees. In these turbulent times, your best move is to stick with a long-term investment strategy based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon.

Products claiming to prevent or cure the disease – When there’s a real treatment or vaccination for COVID-19, it will be big news, and you will hear about it. Until then, ignore any claims for products that promise “miracle” cures. Not only
