From Me To You... There is something about a front porch that has always called to me. A place to sit and sip, take in the world and let the neighborhood get acquainted with you. It screams Americana to me. One of the iconic things about this country that I was quite surprised did not exist as much as I had thought.

I always imagined that when I bought a house it would have a front porch, complete with a swing, comfy cushions, a flag waving proudly on a pole, a dog curled up at my feet while I sipped coffee and waved my children off to school in the morning. None of that ever happened. Except the coffee - I have sipped a lot of coffee in the mornings as I scrambled through the chaos that is getting children ready for school. Back to the iconic image idea. As a foreigner moving to this country I imagined many things that I would find. The vastness of the country that one is very true - this country is bigger than some continents. As a young adult I travelled across country by Amtrak. If you ever have the chance, travelling by rail is a wonderful way to

see and appreciate this beautiful country. Its states are as different as countries and are worth taking the time to visit. Opportunity is another iconic ideal that many people come here for, streets not quite paved with gold but at least the ability to find your place and do well if you try hard. To some extent that is true, I have done well and it was due to a lot of hard work, but that is changing for our children. Despite their endeavors and opportunity the sheer cost of everything is holding them back. Many young adults are either foregoing college because of the cost, or if they do go they are crippled with debt that they will most likely carry well into their 50’s. Families are forced to welcome their offspring back into their homes so they can survive. Not the image I carried in my backpack 27 years ago when I first landed at JFK. Then we moved west. Into the Wild Wild West land of cowboys and rugged desert. Surprisingly there were more front porches out here than I expected, still not at my house though... I had heard that there were Coyotes and Roadrunners to be found out here. Images of large brightly colored creatures zooming around dodging cunning animals wielding TNT danced through my head. Imagine my surprise to see the diminutive brown bird scurrying across the street one morning without a Meep-Meep to be heard. That was a Roadrunner? Wow, sadly disappointing. Now the coyotes, those I have found to be as wiley and scrawny as in the cartoons, but thankfully with less access to explosives.

On Our Cover If it weren’t for a brief move back to Myra’s hometown in Texas, Verrado residents Cory and Myra Thompson might not have stumbled upon Orange Leaf.

“After our first visit, Cory and I fell in love with Orange Leaf,” Myra said. “We loved the amazing natural taste of their frozen yogurt, the fun and family oriented feel and, above all, the uplifting guest experience. You naturally feel better when you leave, because of the upbeat vibe. We both left the premises thinking: ‘If only we could open one of these!’” Fast forward through the years and the dream came true. Moving their young family to Verrado three years ago, The Thompsons recognized that Orange Leaf had yet to take hold in Arizona, with just one location in the East Valley.

“We jumped at the chance to introduce Orange Leaf on Main Street,” Cory said. “This is the place to be. We are excited to serve as a gathering place for this vibrant community we’ve chosen to raise our children in.” Coming from a military home, Cory has lived in several states but Arizona is the place he calls home. While born in Utah and growing up in the West Valley, Cory had one last opportunity to move spending a few years in Texas, he met Myra a born and raised Texan. Married in 2005, the Verrado residents have 3 girls. Myra enjoys being able to give back to help local schools in fundraising opportunities, as well as, helping community groups with donations. “We love being part of this wonderful community,” says Myra. “We are so grateful to have this amazing family living and growing their business in Verrado.”

Verrado’s Craft Club

Fun, friendship, and purpose are hallmarks of the Verrado lifestyle. People move here from all over the world to enjoy a community that is steeped in meaningful relationships and experiences. There are countless opportunities for residents to engage in onetime, short-term, and long-term projects that nurture the soul and strengthen the fabric of our community. A recent project of Verrdo’s Craft Club, Keep Calm and Craft On, is a prime example of residents working together to have fun and do good.

Members of Keep Calm and Craft On united on a gorgeous Saturday morning in March to restore the mosaic bench on Main Street. In just under three hours, the cheerful group of five volunteers, Dr. Karla Gable, Carole Thomson, Susan Leahey,

Patti Vander Ploeg and Shelly Hornback removed broken pieces and applied new stones and tiles in a pattern consistent with the original design. Gable said, “We preserved the integrity of the piece by coupling our crafting experience with expert installation guidance.”

The mosaic bench, located in the breezeway on the south side of Main Street, is enjoyed daily by residents and visitors alike who are often found there sipping a latte, waiting on a dinner table, or simply enjoying the relaxing sounds of the nearby fountain. Thomson said, “It’s a beautiful bench that was simply in need of some TLC. Our members were delighted to roll up their sleeves to restore this treasured public art whose bright colors and prominent location symbolize our vibrant community.”

Furry Friends

According to Dog Tipper, May is “Chip your Pet Month”. A microchip is one of the best ways to protect your dog or cat if he/she gets lost. Collars and tags are important, too, but they can sometimes be removed.

Dog and cat microchipping is simple and takes only a few moments at your local vet. The veterinarian injects the chip, which is about the size of a grain of rice, beneath the pet’s skin and between the shoulder blades. The process is similar to a routine shot and does not require an anesthetic. This microchip is a permanent pet ID. The microchip itself has no internal energy source, so it will last the life of your pet. It is read by passing a microchip scanner over your pet’s shoulder blades. The scanner emits a low radio frequency that provides the power necessary to transmit the microchip’s unique ID code and positively identify

the pet. This ensures a speedy reunion of your beloved family member! It is important to mention that it is equally essential to make sure that your pet’s microchip information is current and up-to-date. Many times when a lost pet’s microchip is scanned, the contact information that comes up is outdated. Registration is easy and updating your current contact information takes less than five minutes. Please make this a priority. We invite you to Shop For Our Cause: Chewy will donate $20 to Community Paws for every new customer purchase. Water Safety Two children die every day due to drowning, and according to a study from the National SAFE KIDS Campaign, 88 percent of children who drown do so while under adult supervision. Many don’t realize that drowning can occur quietly, with no overt signs that the child is in trouble.

The good news is that you can follow safety tips - and teach your children skills - to help keep them safe while enjoying water activities. Supervising children vigilantly and creating barriers to accessing water unexpectedly are the first steps in averting a tragedy. Teaching children how to be safe in and around water is one of the most important life skills parents can give their children. Lindsay Mondick, Senior Manager of Aquatics at YMCA of the USA offers important safety tips to protect your children from harm around water, whether it’s in the bathtub, at the beach or in a pool.

or children at all times. If children are in a pool or near a body of water, a caregiver needs to be close, paying full attention and not distracted by a phone or other diversions. Wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets. Children and adolescents must wear appropriately sized and weighted life jackets in or around watercraft. Non-swimmers and small children should always wear life jackets when near water and while swimming. Adults should also wear them to model safe behavior. Learn CPR. When seconds count, bystanders may be the first to help, so learning CPR may save a life. CPR classes are available at community centers, hospitals and the American Red Cross. Teach basic swim skills early. Not only do most children enjoy swimming lessons, but taking formal lessons can save their lives. Water safety not only saves lives but also builds confidence. For more information visit www.ymca.net

Never swim alone. Nobody should swim by themselves, in case of accident. Teach your children that they should never enter the water anywhere without a lifeguard and/or responsible caregiver attending them. Stay attentive and watch without distraction. If you’re with a large group, or even if a lifeguard is present, designate one person to watch the child

The Bug Guy Honey Bee Swarms are Common

Swarming is a natural process in the life of a honey bee colony. Swarming occurs when a large group of honey bees leaves an established colony and flies off to establish a new colony, essentially creating two from one. Swarming is a natural method of propagation that occurs in response to crowding within the colony. Swarming usually occurs in late spring and early summer and begins in the warmer hours of the day. Honey bee swarms may contain several hundred to several thousand worker bees, a few drones and one queen. Swarming bees fly around briefly and then cluster on a tree limb, shrub or other object. Clusters usually remain stationary for an hour to a few days, depending on weather and the time needed to find a new nest site by scouting bees. When a suitable location for the new colony, such as a hollow tree, is found the cluster breaks up and flies to it. Honey bee swarms are not highly dangerous under most circumstances. Swarming honey

bees feed prior to swarming, reducing their ability to sting. Further, bees away from the vicinity of their nest (offspring and food stores) are less defensive and are unlikely to sting unless provoked. In most situations when a honey bee swarm is found on a tree, shrub or house you do not need to do anything. Swarms are temporary and the bees will move on if you patiently ignore them. Stay back and keep others away from the swarm, but feel free to admire and appreciate the bees from a safe distance. You may be able to give a honey bee swarm to a beekeeper who will gather the swarm and relocate it for you. To find a beekeeper willing to capture swarms check with a local beekeeper you know or call authorities such as pest control operators, police and fire departments and the local extension office. Only if a serious health threat is present because of the location of the swarm, such as in a highly traveled public area, should you attempt to do anything with a swarm. Only as a last resort, you can spray a swarm of bees with soapy water (up to 1 cup of liquid dishwashing detergent in a gallon of water) to kill the bees. Spraying a honey bee swarm is a risky operation because of the large number of bees. Submitted by Larry Cash, of Estrella Mountain Pest Control

#VeryVerrado It’s time for some summer fun, but enrolling in multiple summer camps can be costly. The good news is there’s plenty of free fun to be had that entertains and even educates children while giving parents’ wallets a vacation too!

Free Summer Movies Watch a free movie at the theater or under the stars. Many movie theaters host free movie days throughout the summer. Outdoor movies are usually in the park where there’s plenty of room for families to spread out. Free Sports Clinics Learn from college athletes, their coaches and even professionals in the sport. Free sports clinics are usually held on college campuses for a limited amount of kids. Each free sports clinic has its own rules but many allow children as young as 4 and up to 17 years of age. Free Behind-the-Scenes Tours What’s it like to work at a TV station? How does the mail get from point A to point B? Let the kids take a behind the scenes tour to find out. You can tour many places simply by asking. Free Camps Grants and sponsors make some summer camps free for kids. Art, writing, theater, math, science and reading camps are some of the themes of these camps. But many also include crafts, field trips, and swimming. Vacation Bible School

Churches hold Vacation Bible School as an outreach of their ministries. Members of the church, as well as non-members, are invited for a free week of fun. Kids sing songs, learn Bible lessons, make friends, create crafts, perform in skits and learn how to treat others, among other valuable lessons. Volunteer Opportunities As soon as kids can walk, they can start learning the benefits of volunteering with you. When they get older, they can branch out into their own volunteering opportunities. Library Events The library is an excellent venue for story time. But did you know there are even more activities for kids at the library that won’t get them shushed? Most libraries offer free summer reading programs. Free Parks and Recreation Activities Playing in the park can be more than an hour on the playground. Many parks and recreation departments set up a summer schedule of day-long activities. Kids are exposed to the arts, fitness lessons, a variety of sports, even computer instruction. Check your city’s local parks and recreation department website to see what activities are planned near you. Here is a source for summer activities: https:// www.raisingarizonakids.com/summer-camps/ summer-day-camps-arizona/ Submitted by Allen Turner, of Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation

Home Sweet Home Let’s face it. We all want a beautiful carpet of green to create the backdrop for entertaining, playing and relaxing. However, what you may not realize is the benefits of a beautiful lawn go well beyond its aesthetics. Environmental benefits Well-maintained lawns support healthy community environments. For instance, grass captures dust, smoke particles and other pollutants to help keep air cleaner. Plus, grasses absorb carbon dioxide and break it down into oxygen and carbon. Additionally, lawns are natural coolants. Lawns can be 31 degrees cooler than asphalt and 20 degrees cooler than bare soil. Community benefits Communities that house healthy lawns, parks and commercially landscaped spaces just look

Introducing Redfield Realtors®, a team with over 20 years real estate experience. “We have the desire to help you find the perfect home, where you can continue to live passionately, love life and share laughter with family and friends.”

nicer and feel more welcoming. Additionally, studies show that public green spaces can reduce stress, lower health care costs and improve quality of life. Noise reduction is another big benefit for communities with healthy landscapes. Studies show that lawns and landscapes can reduce noise levels by 20 to 30 percent over hard surfaces like concrete and pavement. Neighborhoods with tree-lined streets and larger yards have reduced crime rates, according to the U.S. Forest Service. Get a head start on smart lawn care with these fast tips from the experts at NALP: 1. Daily watering is not necessary. Instead, give your lawn a deep soak every couple of days, so the moisture can penetrate the soil down to the roots 2. When mowing, never remove more than onethird of a grass blade for a finished height of 2 to 3 inches. 3. Keep grass clippings on the lawn after mowing. They break down and provide nitrogen and nutrients to the soil for a healthier lawn. 4. Change directions when mowing. The pattern change will control coarse grass and create more even surfaces. For more lawn care tips and information on the benefits of a healthy lawn, visit www. loveyourlandscape.org

Money Matters Is it a good idea to borrow from your 401(k)? To begin with, you need to determine if a loan is even available. You can only borrow from your 401(k) if you’re still working for the company that offers the plan, but even so, you’ll have to check with your human resources area to determine if loans are allowed. If they are, you’ll want to weigh the pros and cons before taking action. On the “pro” side, there’s no formal loan application and no minimum credit score required. Plus, you’re only borrowing from yourself, and you can generally repay the loan with automatic paycheck deductions. However, you’ll also encounter some “cons” when taking out a 401(k) loan, particularly concerning taxes. When you borrow from your plan, you will have to repay it, along with interest, with money you’ve earned – and been taxed on – and then, when you withdraw it later, you’ll pay taxes on it again. Furthermore, if you leave your employer before fully repaying your loan, the outstanding balance likely will be taxable, although you may

have a grace period in which to pay it off and avoid taxes. And perhaps even more important, taking money from your 401(k), even if you repay it later, will almost certainly slow the growth potential of your account – which, in plain terms, means you may have less money available for retirement. Of course, if you encounter an emergency, and you have nowhere else to turn, you may need to borrow from your 401(k). And some plans allow hardship withdrawals for medical expenses and other needs, although you’ll still be taxed on the amount you withdraw. But you’d probably be better off if you can prepare for situations in which you need immediate access to a sizable sum. One way of doing this is to build an emergency fund. You also might find some resources in the part of your investment portfolio. For example, you can always withdraw contributions to a Roth IRA without incurring taxes. In any case, you work hard to build your 401(k) – so, no matter where you are in life, think carefully about how you will use the money. Our Goal as Parents It is that time of the school year when parents may begin feeling like it’s one thing after another for our teens. Seems like we just got over spring break; then prom and BAM – graduation is here!

While it’s a wonderful time to celebrate and make memories, it also poses a risk for our youth who can be tempted by alcohol and drugs. We’ve all heard of the terrible stories of teen accidents especially around these events as a result of getting in the car with someone who has been drinking or using drugs. In order to prevent things like this from happening it’s up to us, parents, to be there for our children and help them avoid these situations and risks. The 2018 Arizona Youth Survey reports that 81% of Buckeye youth report parental disapproval is a main reason for not using alcohol or drugs. “The facts are, parent DISAPROVAL greatly reduces underage drinking and drug abuse,” states WOW Coalition Director Larry Tracey. It only takes a few minutes to talk to our kids about the dangers of alcohol, and it only takes a few minutes for them to decide to say “yes” or “no.” Buckeye’s Way Out West Coalition

(WOW Coalition) urges parents to help kids be on the right side of the decision-making process. Those few minutes of time it may take can change an entire lifetime of consequences. Here are some tips to help parents keep their teens safe and healthy during graduation celebrations. Reinforce Expectations. Being an upperclassman has its privileges, but it also has its responsibilities. Re-establish the rules and the consequences for breaking them. While it may be okay to loosen the reins a bit, it needs to be clear that drinking and drug use remain unacceptable. Make Each Moment Count. Teens only get one junior/senior year. Let them know you don’t want them to miss out on things because of bad choices like drinking and drug use. Help Plan. Know your child’s itinerary, including who they will be with and phone numbers of where they can be contacted. Establish call-in times and give them the option of calling you at any time for help or for advice, which includes picking them up, if needed. Provide Safe Alternatives. Plan chaperoned, alcohol-free parties. Cleaning Up

American households are sitting on goldmines. Experts estimate there’s almost a trillion dollars worth of unused items in our homes. Rather than letting those things gather dust, people are digging into their closets, garages and basements to make money back on unused items. If you want to make some money clearing out things you no longer want or use, consider these smart tips: Have a yard sale: Reach out to your city to learn about any yard sale regulations, then set up shop at your house to sell to people in your community. Make sure to mark items with a reasonable price and promote your sale to bargain hunters that’ll search through your treasures. This is also a wonderful way to meet new neighbors. Sell online: You can reach a much broader audience and potentially get more money for things like electronics, toys, clothes and vehicles using an app like OfferUp. Safety is always a priority when selling online and meeting people in-person, and OfferUp works with police

departments across the country to designate safer places to meet, which you can find in the app or by going to SafeTradeSpots.com. Tap into consignment: Consignment stores have been a staple for reselling for a while, but be advised that it could take the store some time to sell your items, and the store can take as much as a 50 percent cut on your merchandise for managing the transaction. On the plus side, it can be more convenient to let a consignment store sell for you instead of going through the trouble of listing the items yourself. Post in a neighborhood forum: You can also try posting in your local neighborhood classifieds or on social media. While websites like Nextdoor tend to be more popular for people listing free items, you can offer a discount to your neighbors and plan on quicker sales since it’s easier to arrange pick-ups and drop-offs when everyone is less than a quarter-mile from each other. Donate: For things you don’t end up repurposing or selling, donate them to a local charity. Many nonprofits accept a variety of items in good condition for resale or auction. Depending on what you donate, you can get a receipt for a tax write-off that can hopefully get you a larger refund the following year.
