From Me To You...

After a long trip to check on my family I am firmly back in this country and in this time zone. I brought back all the chocolate I could fit into my suitcases and the most beautiful, delicate mugs from an art gallery. They are light, thin, perfect for a cuppa in the afternoon and even better, my Dad bought them for me.

He wanted to get me a gift and although he waved many options before my eyes, nothing seemed right. I had seen these beautiful mugs in an art gallery on one of my first days there, but I hesitated. They were expensive. But so beautiful.

The shape of them is wonderful to hold. Cradle.

The texture is sublime, almost soft to the touch, and there is an indentation for your thumb halfway up the vessel. It adds to the whole experience of sipping a warm cup of tea.

I did not think I would get them but in the end I made room in my luggage and dad bought me two! They made it all the way across the Atlantic in one piece (well one piece each) and I treasure them.

On Our Cover In 2005 the McKenna family moved from the Buckeye State, Ohio, to Buckeye, AZ. At that time the housing market was crazy and Tara was flying out to get on waiting lists, only to fly back within 48 hours to claim their lot.

“We kinda took what we could get just to move to Verrado. We figured we would get here and re-evaluate in a couple years.” The 2007 housing crash, created a bit of a detour, but with perseverance (16 years later!) they moved into their dream home, the Black House.

Along the way, the McKennas have built and remodelled 2 homes here in Verrado and Tara’s love of all things houses prompted her to make a career change from Pharmacist to Real Estate Agent in 2012. Luckily, Tara’s hobby has always been home decor and design, “I love going into houses and seeing their potential.” She is able to take the bare bones of a new build home and customize it to create unique and comfortable spaces. As a Realtor, Tara is able to translate that love of design for her clients too. She can walk into a plain, uninspired house and see the possibilities that others cannot. “Some people know exactly what they want, some know what they like, but not how to make it happen.” In this way Tara gets to use her creativity and help buyers find or create their own dream home, and on the other side of the transaction she can help sellers create spaces that buyers will love.

We defined what spaces we really needed and made the areas that are often overlooked, like pantry and laundry room, spaces you would want to spend time in.”

When designing the black house, Tara worked closely with Steve Simpson from Simpson Design Associates. “He was a great partner and listened to all my crazy design ideas. I asked for it and he made it happen.” The house was designed to nestle into the hillside and while the design is officially a Contemporary Western Regional Farmhouse, it was really important to Tara to maintain the architectural integrity of the Western Regional Farmhouse. “We made sure the massing was correct, which means the house Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

The Dr. Is In!

Hi, it’s Dr Gabe, your friendly neighborhood pediatrician. I’m answering more of parents’ most common questions. The next question is “What’s the use of taking my ill child to the pediatrician when they won’t prescribe an antibiotic?” I realize that it’s hard to see your child ill but there is no magic medicine to make your child feel instantly better- including antibiotics. Now don’t get me wrong, antibiotics have their place in treating illness and can be life- saving but antibiotics should only be used when necessary.

Most of the common infections in our communities are caused by viruses such as colds and influenza. Other illnesses, like strep throat, are caused by bacteria. Some infections are caused by viruses and then a bacterial illness will develop on top, like a cold that develops into pneumonia or an ear infection. Antibiotics can only treat bacterial illness and will not be effective against a viral illness.

Just like any medication, antibiotics have side effects. Some of these side effects are mild like an upset stomach or diarrhea but there is also

risk of severe side effects. These include severe intestinal infection, severe allergic reactions, antibiotic resistance, and disruption of the microbiome (the natural bacteria that live in our intestines). Antibiotic resistance develops when antibiotics are overused. It is becoming increasingly common to have infections caused by bacteria that are resistant to the most widely used antibiotics. As there is little research going into developing new antibiotics at this point, we, as a society, need to be good stewards of our antibiotic usage by not overprescribing and taking the medication as prescribed. Beyond the risk of severe side effects and antibiotic resistance, research is coming out on how important the microbiome is, especially in children. Antibiotic overuse can disrupt the microbiome in children which has been linked to negative effects on brain development, decreased immune systems, asthma, obesity, diabetes, mood disorders, and even ADHD. Antibiotics are not just antibiotics: they are a medication with side effects and risks. When your pediatrician doesn’t prescribe an antibiotic, just know that we are doing this after weighing out all the risks and benefits and always having your child’s best interests in mind.

Children And Pets

Pets enrich the lives of many children and families. While children raised with pets show many benefits, safety should also be considered when deciding to get or keep a pet in a family with young children.

Choose wisely from breeds or species that are a good fit for your family, your home and your lifestyle. Behavior, temperament, excitability, patience and size are important characteristics to consider in a child-friendly pet that your little one can help care for. Family allergies should also be taken into account. Young children should always be supervised during their interactions with pets.

Children should be taught to play gently with pets and to keep their distance when an animal is eating, sleeping or caring for their young.

Planning and discussion are also necessary for a family pet to be a positive experience. Young

children can help with pet care, but can’t be completely responsible. Allow your child to help care for the family pet in small, safe ways and always under adult supervision.

Developmentally, positive relationships with pets can encourage children to love and trust others.

Bonding with a pet can also help young children develop non-verbal communication, compassion and empathy. Caring for pets teaches children responsibility and respect. Both children and animals need exercise and pets are great playmates and a fun way to add physical activity into a child’s day. With the right planning, a pet can add many joyful memories for the entire family!

The Bug Guy

In the summer, bee stings are to be expected as you head outdoors to enjoy parks and picnics.

Every year, bee stings send people to the emergency room, here in the valley. To keep your family protected when enjoying outdoor activities this summer, it’s important to know what to do for a bee sting and how to remove a stinger.

What are the symptoms of a bee sting?

Many stung by a bee will experience a sharp, burning pain followed by a red welt at the sting site. You will likely see a small white spot in the center of the welt where the stinger punctured the skin. The swelling and pain typically resolve within a few hours, but in some cases, individuals can develop a more severe reaction. For those who are allergic to bee stings, however, they could experience anaphylaxis, which could be deadly. Some symptoms of anaphylaxis include rashes or hives, tongue or throat swelling, nausea and vomiting, wheezing, dizziness and loss of consciousness. Seek out medical assistance or call 911 immediately if an individual experiences symptoms of this

severe allergic reaction. If they have been prescribed EpiPen®, they should always carry it with them and use it immediately at the first signs and symptoms of a severe allergic reaction.

What to do when you are stung by a bee: It is important to remove the bee stinger as quickly as possible to avoid allowing the venom to spread which could cause a more severe reaction. Pinch or scrape the sting, or even swipe the edge of a flat object across the welt to dislodge the stinger. If a stinger is left in place, it could leave room for infections or cause a foreign body reaction. After removing the stinger, use soap and cold water to clean the area. Use a cold compress such as an ice pack to alleviate some of the pain. You can also use anti-inflammatory medicines as well. In order to calm the local reaction, antihistamine and hydrocortisone ointments are recommended.

How can you prevent bee stings?

The best way to prevent bee stings around the backyard is to avoid beehives. Bee colonies can become defensive and attack as a united front if they feel their nest is being threatened, so it is best to call in a licensed pest control professional to remove a nest. Unfortunately, while insect repellants work quite well for mosquitoes and ticks, they have little effect on bees. Keeping all these tips in mind will help lessen your chances of being stung and will leave room for more summer fun!

Running a business is really hard.

What they don’t tell you is that it can cause severe stress and anxiety, and drains you mentally to the point of depression in even the most laid back people.

• People will talk about you, compare you to others, use you, they will view you as a service and not a person anymore.

• Friends and family will expect discounts and people will value you and your hard work less than a big chain store.

• You have to worry about if you forget to email/ message someone back, are they going to think it was on purpose? Did you disappoint them?

Will they hold that against you? When in reality you just can’t get to everyone’s messages and emails.

Starting up and running a successful business puts incredible strain on personal lives and relationships, many of which fail because there is just often no work life balance. You need to be the director, the worker, the admin, the marketing team, the accountant, the cleaner.....

April is Active Dog Month, a celebration designed to get dogs and their owners outside to enjoy some exercise and fresh air together.

Helping your dog get enough activity is an essential component of maintaining his or her physical health, and it’s a lot of fun for you, too.

Testing Hot

I just got off the phone with a mother whose twenty-five-year-old son has relapsed; he just tested “hot” for opioids. The more I listened, the more my heart grew heavy for her. He was admitted into a drug treatment center for his substance use disorder. Mom is beginning to lose hope because he has been admitted into drug treatment centers multiple times. She is now wondering if her son will be another statistic that will land her into an exclusive club that grows larger every day. The members are parents who have lost a son, daughter, or another loved one to an opioid overdose death.

I had that conversation two years ago. Since then, a lot has changed, and not for the better.

Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that is 50 to 100 times more powerful than heroin, has hit the streets, and as a result, many youth and young adults have died. If you are a parent or grandparent, you need to continue reading and educate yourself, your children, and your grandkids about the dangers of fentanyl.

Opioids are highly addictive.

They can quickly lead to Opioid Use Disorder.

Fact: A new milestone was recently reached in America; over 1 million people have died from an opioid overdose. More people have died from opioid overdoses than have been killed nationwide from Covid.

Fact: All street drugs now contain fentanyl.

Counterfeit pills are just like counterfeit money.

Youth and adults may think they are buying a pill such as Percocet, Vicodin, or Xanax.

Fact: “Blues,” the street name for counterfeit oxycodone pills containing fentanyl (because of their color), have become common. You may also hear them referred to as “M30s” for the stamp commonly found on each pill.

Fact: With fentanyl, there is no such thing as a “recreational user.”

Fact: Think of a grain of salt. A standard dose of fentanyl would be equivalent to 7 grains of salt.

12 grains of salt will cause an overdose and, in many cases, death.

Fact: Fentanyl overdoses are now the number one cause of death in males ages 18 – 45.
