I have sat in front of my computer for a few days now, thinking of what to write to you. I have a quote swimming in my brain, “The last 24 hours have been a heck of a year!” And that sums up our lives. Things are developing and moving so rapidly that it is hard to keep up.

As I write this our children are at home for the foreseeable future, and most of us are working from home. By the time you read this in a couple of weeks I anticipate the whole country will be on lockdown. The irony of my last article is not lost one me. It is not all doom and gloom though. I see examples of people helping others, sharing resources, putting up their Christmas lights and taping pictures in their windows so that those taking a walk can see them. Posting encouraging words and funny memes for

others to chuckle at.

Then there is the news. Ugh. I try not to pay too much attention to the sad statistics and instead focus on the positive ones. Let me share some with you. As of now there are...

Coronanxiety I’m sure that most of you know the basics about what you should be doing now to maintain your physical health but you also need to take care of your emotional health. One important way to do that is to manage your anxiety and to reduce your stress. Here’s how I’m managing my own coronanxiety and how you can manage yours.

1. Focus on what you do know as opposed to what you don’t know Whenever you notice that your anxiety is leading you to contemplate “what-if” scenarios straight out of World War Z, resist taking the bait.

Instead, focus on the facts.

2. Focus on what’s in your control as opposed what isn’t When you feel overwhelmed by what’s going on, take a pause from whatever you’re doing, and shift your mind to thinking about what’s within your control.

3. Focus on what you can do as opposed to what you can’t Whenever you feel powerless, focus on the actions you can take instead of those you cannot.

4. Help yourself by helping others Whenever you feel paralyzed by difficult feelings, one way to get unstuck is to help other people who are in need. Practicing kindness and helping others are great ways to reinforce

your own feelings of agency and control, and they have the bonus of making you feel empowered and connected.

5. Limit your news consumption The situation is changing and developing by the hour which is keeping many of us glued to the news or to social media. However, when the news is especially stressful, it’s extremely important to find a balance between keeping informed and not becoming overwhelmed.

Decide on specific times of day in which you will check the news, and check it only then.

6. Keep your perspective Right now it can be hard for any of us — psychologists included! — to see the light at the end of the tunnel. But this emergency situation will resolve eventually. We don’t know if it will be in weeks or in months, but humans are highly adaptable creatures and life will seem normal again soon.

We’ll emerge from this crisis having gained increased resilience, understanding and empathy.

Verrado is saying Goodbye & Thank You to a well respected professional behind the counter at our Mainstreet CVS Pharmacy! Randy Sinley is the familiar face behind the counter when we pick up our local prescriptions. After 43 years in his profession & 14 years at our Verrado CVS, Randy is retiring.

Randy was born in Port Jervis, NY & raised in Branchville, NJ by his parents & alongside his brother, Jeffrey. Graduating in 1972, he pursued his education at the College of Pharmacy at Universityof Iowa & got his degree in 1977. After graduation, he worked in Missouri at Skaggs Drugs & then Revco Drugs, which is now part of CVS. In 1982, Randy married his wife, Linda & they raised two kids, Larry and Lori. In 1991, Randy started to work for Hy-Vee Food & Drug & then became a Pharmacy Manager in 1992.

In January 2005, he began work with CVS in Independence, MO prior to relocating to Arizona in March 2006. His career landed in Verrado at CVS in May 2006 & he has stayed until retirement this year!

Randy has been a part of many organizations in his lifetime to include: McDonald Lodge #324 AF&AM, Scottish Rite, Valley of Kansas City & Ararat Shrine, Past Patron of Mt Washington #423 Order of Eastern Star & active with Job’s Daughters International at local & state level.

In his spare time, Randy has always enjoyed sports, mostly football, University of Iowa & Kansas City Chiefs, plus the Kansas City Royals.

He loves to travel, especially cruises. He hopes to continue to travel after retirement! He would also like to be able to enjoy his pool more during the hot summer months.

Randy shared that he has “seen a lot of changes in Verrado over the years. The store in Verrado is not the sleepy little store it was at one time.

I have enjoyed meeting a lot of new people & being able to help them with their Health care, many of which I have become good friends with.

I will miss some of the friendships I have made & I will miss all my co-workers at the store, they all work hard & are fun to be around. It has been a rewarding career & I am thankful to everyone over the years.”

We wish Randy & his wife, much health and happiness while enjoying the golden years! We are grateful to all he has done for our community & the years he has dedicated to the medical profession. If you stop in the store in the next month, make sure to thank Randy for his service!

Business 411 When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.

There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.”

There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown.

•

The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. It also allows for advertisers to re-position a brand or introduce a new product.

• Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times.

• Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, which can provide greater short-term sales growth, increases during a recession.

• When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current – and possibly future – sales.

An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.”

An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits.

Substance Abuse Get in the Way of Epidemic Youth Substance Use Preventing the spread of the Coronavirus is heavy on our minds these days. But Parents and grandparents, you need to know that another epidemic threatens the well-being and future of your kids. Early substance use by our youth is leading many of them to a lifetime of addiction struggle. Ninety percent of adults with a Substance Use Disorder (SUD) started using alcohol or drugs before they turned 18.

The Way Out West Coalition (WOW) wants to help you give your kids a fighting chance to do life well. Prevention is about delaying the age of first drug or alcohol use whether alcohol, tobacco or marijuana which are the most used substances among teens.

Protecting our kids by getting in the way of early substance use is critical because the adolescent brain, until a person is in their early to mid-20s, is being hard-wired for the future. Protecting the brain during this period of rapid growth and development is crucial to a person’s overall health and dramatically reduces the risk of developing a Substance Use Disorder later in life.

What is prevention?

Prevention is simply reducing the risk factors and increasing the protective factors in your teen’s life.

There are three risk factors that bear consideration: individual, 10 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

environmental and genetic.

Individual factors that put an adolescent at risk for future substance abuse are first time use, parent substance use, traumatic experiences (known as ACEs), and a lack of social connections.

Environmental factors in the community include high drug access, poverty, and exposure to violence.

Genetic factors account for about 50% of a person’s likelihood of developing a SUD. Now, we can’t change genetics, but we can help teens make good decisions about substance use by understanding their family history.

Prevention focuses on strengthening the protective factors for our kids to counterbalance the risks they face every day. Whether it’s alcohol, tobacco, marijuana or new dangers such as vaping, prescription and over the counter medication abuse it is important to act!

Here’s what you can do! First, speak plainly and clearly about your expectations of no alcohol, tobacco, or drug use. Our kids need to hear us speaking the truth firmly and with love. Next, help your kids find a passion to pursue such as sports, music, art or hobbies. Another thing you can do is to surround your teen with positive, affirming relationships that will help your child thrive and feel loved and protected. Finally, practice with your teen ways they can say “no” to drugs or alcohol.

Jenny Jenkins grew up caring for the planet, so it’s no surprise that she has instilled those same values in her children. Today, the mother of four says it’s become second nature for her and her husband, Cliff, to practice a low-impact, environmentally friendly lifestyle.

Experiences over things With an emphasis on shared experiences and family activities over products and purchases, Jenny’s family values togetherness and an active lifestyle. “We all love the outdoors, so we’ll walk wherever we can— like to the grocery store or the farmer’s market— instead of driving. It means that we spend more time together than a lot of families do, and it also is good for us because of the physical activity.

And, even just walking to the hardware store, you’re getting outside and connecting with nature, and that makes you happier.”

Today, experts say that mindset is just what the planet needs. People who are happier have been found to be less focused on “things” and more focused on fulfilling activities and social relationships, which brings with it a built-in benefit for Mother Earth.

Happy people make more responsible consumers?

Consumerism and all the stuff we make harms the environment [through] pollution, climate change, degradation of natural resources. However, some believe that saving the planet could be as simple as emphasizing happiness.

Teaching it to the next generation Jenny says she has seen that mindset blossom in her children. “I’m not saying we don’t have any ‘stuff,’ because we do, but we mostly do activities instead of gifts,” she says.

For example, this year they bought family season passes to a ski slope instead of buying items like Xboxes and iPads.

Naturally happy “Being in nature, or even just looking at it, is associated with a number of positive physical and mental outcomes, including reduced stress, increased attention and greater self-control,” says Misha Voloaca of the University of Ottawa Well-Being Lab. “When you’re moving around in nature, eating better and spending time with your family, you’re naturally going to feel better,” she says.

“Physically, you feel better. The way you’re living makes you happier. It’s kind of common sense.”

Home Sweet Home Would you sell your home if you received an offer higher than expected?

I’m sure you have heard the news; across Arizona the real estate inventory is at an all-time low, homes are scarce, and demand is high. This can be attributed to a couple of key factors.

Interest rates are at historic lows. Being in the industry and checking in with my preferred lenders I have seen rates being locked in at very low, 30-year fixed, conventional loans. With interest rates being so low, coupled with a strong economy, demand has never been better.

During 2018 and 2019, Arizona was one of the top states in population growth. Population growth is particularly high within the Phoenix metro area.

According to data from the Census Bureau, the population for the city of Phoenix rose by nearly

15% from 2010 to 2019.

That’s well beyond the nation’s growth rate for that same timeframe.

Population growth increases demand for housing on both the purchase and rental side. With all other things being equal, continuous population growth tends to put increasing pressure on home prices As of writing this article there are only 46 resale homes currently active on the market in Verrado.

This time last year, there were 113 homes on the market for sale.

So, what does this mean if you are on the fence trying to decide whether to sell your home or not? If you have been considering listing your property and you are looking to get top dollar, avoid competition and sell quickly, now is the time to hit the market in Verrado.

Home Schooling With our children at home you may be wondering how you can manage to keep them on track and be a teacher on top of all the other roles you currently have. As a parent who has homeschooled in the past I wanted to let you know what worked for me.

Get up!

I am not suggesting a 5am wake-up call, but they should get up and get going so that you are not nagging them to finish their work at dinnertime.

Set a schedule.

This will help all of you. Your children are used to routine at school and having that at home will create a new sense of normal. It will reassure them that even as their world has changed, this piece of it can be relied on.

Provide regular breaks.

Playtime is very important especially for young children. Mental breaks are just as important for the teenagers. Send them into the backyard to run around, give them some screen time. Yes I said it, let them watch a movie or play a game

during school time. Just put a time limit on it so they get back to what they need to do.

Don’t forget exercise.

This is one you should do as a family. Go for a walk, play relay races in your backyard, crank up the tunes and have a dance party. It will release tension and maybe even work off some of those extra pounds we are sure to gain during our time spent at home.

Socialize with their friends.

Skype, Facetime, texting, multiplayer online games. These are just some of the ways your children can interact with others and this is important. It will give them a break from the isolation and reassure them that they are not the only ones going through this.

The most important thing to remember is that even though your kids will have work from their teachers, they are learning constantly. Whether it is building with leogs or playing with their siblings they are still learning. Go easy on them if they have a meltdown or don’t stay on track, this is not easy for them either.

Money Matters These are challenging times. Like everyone, you are concerned about keeping your family safe and healthy, and you’re doing your part to help protect your community from the effects of the coronavirus. And if you’re an investor, you must also address your financial situation. How should you respond to the current market volatility and recent declines in investment prices?

For one thing, try to avoid what many others seem to be doing: panicking. The market selloff may feel unsettling, but it appears to be driven as much, or more, by fear and panic than by economic or financial reality.

Uncertainty is high, but there are reasons – solid, objective reasons – that provide more confidence in the longer-term outlook, suggesting that conditions still warrant an eventual rebound.

U.S. unemployment entered this situation near a 50-year low, with solid wage growth. We will see a temporary disruption to the labor market, of course, along with a decline in economic activity, but households entered this period in

generally good shape. Furthermore, housing market indicators were moving upward and the decline in mortgage rates could add more strength. Also, the Federal Reserve’s recent interest rate cuts, taking short-term rates back near 0%, will support the economic rebound as the impact of the virus containment efforts eventually fade.

It seems likely that the investment world will finally calm down only when the health situation shows signs of containment – and this will inevitably happen, despite the grim reports we are seeing these days. As a country, we have the motivation, the will, the solidarity and the resources to defeat the coronavirus and its effects, despite the pain and trauma it is now undoubtedly causing.

So, back to our original question: What should you do? Here are a few suggestions: Remember why you’re investing. Given the market decline, you may be tempted to change your investment strategy. But keep in mind that your financial goals, such as a comfortable retirement, are longer-term than the shelf life of the coronavirus. These goals, not today’s headlines, should guide your decisions.

Investing is about more than money.
