From Me To You... Life stages are an interesting thing. I am constantly checking myself against some arbitrary scale as to where I am in my life. Because let’s face it, although I am officially in Middle Age, I still feel like a late teen-early twenty something trying to figure out what to do every day of my life. I am constantly amazed to see my adult and almost adult children striking out into the world. Thinking that I had some small part to play in that amazing-ness is a sobering thought.

The latest life stage is one that I did not choose for myself and it has brought up many strange emotions. It has me balancing precariously on the edge of a wonderful precipice. I am soon to become a grandmother. Oh boy, there is that vertigo again. I am thrilled at the thought of a new baby in the family. I am beyond thrilled that there will be a new life to cuddle and love, I am even looking forward to the hard parts (non stop crying anyone?) So yes, a baby is a wonderful thing. Here’s the rub though. I am going to be shoved into becoming someone’s Grannie. Nana. Bubbie.

What kind of grandmother will I be? Will I start knitting things and finding crinkly wrapped candy in my purse? Will I have to start calling it a pocket book? I am not crafty by nature, well I am capable of starting many crafts but finishing them, well, ahem... cross-stitch in the closet that I started at 16 and have not completed? Baby jacket I was knitting for a child who now has her own baby, still short one sleeve? Paint by numbers scene of a rainy day in London not even recognizable as London yet? Check, check and check again. So do I have to finish all those items and gift them to my granddaughter to be? I think it may be time to clear the decks and ditch all those half completed promises to myself. A new baby brings a fresh start, and with this not being my baby I get to enjoy all the fun stuff and leave out the sleepless nights and panic at 3 am when she whimpers. I do have the advantage of experience. I know what to do with babies and can help the parents as much as they want me to. I will be there for all the questions and ready to step in and let the parents sleep when they just can’t see straight anymore. But this is not my child and I think that is where the balancing on the edge feeling is coming in. I can’t be ‘all in’ in the way I have in the past with my own children. I have to be able to step back and detach, enough to let my children become the amazing parents I am confident they will be. I want to be a wonderful gran, and I aim to be the best support for my children, even if that means finishing a project or two. Now, who wants a Butterscotch? I am sure I saw one in my purse just a minute ago.

On Our Cover

On December 18, 2018, we got a call that changed our lives forever. It was something that we have been waiting for over five years. We adopted our beautiful daughter over five years ago and always knew we wanted her to have a sibling, but we weren’t sure exactly how God would write the story. In March 2018, we became foster parents to two amazing little girls who we thought would be her future sisters, but sadly we had to say goodbye to them four months later. After saying goodbye to them, we decided to sell our house in Glendale and move to Verrado. After getting settled into our new groove, we started to come to terms that we would mourn our desire to adopt another child through foster care but didn’t know what that meant for our future... until the call! To give some background about this call, we have a friend who lives here in Verrado that we met while living in California over five years ago at an adoption and infertility conference called Choose Joy. These friends are the reason we even knew about Verrado and had no idea how our lives would collide. Now, these friends of ours

have adopted three special little boys, but their second son in particular is the key to our story. In September 2018, the birth mom of their second son reached out and asked them if they wanted to adopt her next child that was due late December, but after lots of prayer and consideration, they said no, mostly because they had their own little miracle on the way due around the same time. We were asked if we would be considered and we said YES, but the birth mom had already chosen another family. We were heartbroken but trusted that God had other plans for us.

Fast forward to December 18, this friend of ours called us to see if we were still interested in this child again as the other family backed out, but we were going to have to raise $12,000 for adoption and lawyer expenses to make this happen… and by the way, mom is in labor! On December 21, after attending an ugly sweater party with our new community here in Verrado, we got home and then got THE phone call and needed to come immediately to Mesa! It was everything and more that we had been praying for! On The Road Again

Are you planning a classic American road trip? With a tank of gas, the right attitude and some smart supplies, you can explore amazing locales on a budget. Start planning your next affordable road trip with these smart tips and tricks:

1) Discover one-tank destinations You only need one day to get away, so research destinations you can get to on one tank of gas. This keeps fuel costs down, and because you don’t need to stay overnight, you won’t have to budget for a hotel. People tend to forget the beautiful spots just a few hours away from home, so bring a map and see which direction catches your attention.

2) Fill up the tires One of the best ways to maximize your vehicle’s fuel efficiency is to make sure tires are properly inflated. You can improve your gas mileage by 0.6 percent on average and up to 3 percent in some cases simply by keeping your tires inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure. 3) Create comfort Remember the journey should be as much fun as the destination. Clean out your car, make sure windows are sparkling clean to take in the views, pack car-friendly snacks and drinks, and bring along cozy pillows or blankets. Technology can create comfort, so charge those digital devices and utilize your vehicle’s features. 4) Pack smar Whether you’re on an impromptu or well-planned road trip, you can ease costs and streamline fun by packing wisely. Sunscreen, sunglasses and comfortable shoes are must-haves for any road trip. After all, you never know what adventures will come your way. Consider packing sandwiches - the ultimate road trip food - which are great for eating in the car or on a picnic so you don’t have to buy full meals. Some of the most amazing travel memories are from one tank road trips, everyone should make these excursions part of their travel plans. They are fun, affordable and great for people of all ages.

Car Seat Safety For many parents, you buckle up your kids and off you go to day care, school or the park. You trust their car seat or booster seat will keep your child safe should something happen, but are you sure the seat you installed months or years ago is truly secure? “I am deeply concerned that nearly half of all car seats are not used correctly,” says Heidi King, deputy administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. “You don’t have to be a parent to play a part in protecting children. I urge everyone to follow these simple tips to ensure kids stay safe in the car at every age.” One of the most common mistakes parents and caregivers make is moving children to the next car seat too soon. No matter their age, you need to make sure that the car seat you use is the right one for your child’s age, as well as their size.

Newborn to 3 years The youngest passengers should remain in a rear-facing car seat until they reach the maximum weight or height of their seat. This positioning better absorbs the force of an impact, making it a better option for small passengers whose necks and spines are still developing. Keep in mind, even if your child’s feet touch the back of the vehicle seat, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re ready for a forward-facing seat. Parents shouldn’t move their toddlers into a forward-facing car seat until they’ve hit the maximum height or weight limit of their current car seat. 4-7 years old At this age your child will likely use a forwardfacing car seat with a harness. One critical step for installing this car seat correctly is making sure to secure it with its tether, not just a seat belt. The tether is an adjustable strap with a hook that can be found at the top of most forward-facing car seats. When you secure the tether to the tether anchor in your vehicle, it keeps the car seat from moving forward in a crash, helping protect your child from head and neck injuries. Additionally, always make sure the chest clip is secured across the chest rather than on the belly. These clips have a tendency to move down, so it’s up to caregivers to align it properly. Make it a habit to always slide the clip up to the appropriate place after buckling your child in to their seat. 8-12 years old After a child exceeds the age and size limits of their forward-facing seat, they can transition to a booster seat. Kids should stay in a booster seat until they are big enough to sit properly with the lap and shoulder belt securely buckled. That means the lap belt is snug across their upper thighs, and the shoulder belt is snug across their shoulder and chest, not their neck or face. All kids 13 and under should ride in the back, even if they try to convince you the front is the “cool” place to be. Visit NHTSA.gov/TheRightSeat.

The Bug Guy

there is not a way to tell the severity of the sting except by the level of pain and the duration of the event. It is possible to receive a dry sting with little to no venom injected, or you could receive a full hit with a full envenomization.

As our weather warms up and our nightly low temps stay above 50-55 degrees, we will be seeing a lot of critters, and with them will come the scorpions.

If you do get stung, it has been described to me as a “white hot metal shard stuck in and both burning and numb at the same time”. The duration of the sting can vary greatly from, as little as several hours to as long as 10 days. Scorpion venom is a neural toxin, and common pain relievers such as aspirin, Tylenol, Motrin, and Aleve will have a reduced effect, ice packs can help at the site too numb the pain. Should you require medical assistance there is an antivenom for bark scorpions that can reduce the impact by up to 50%

Well it looks like were in for a green spring, here in the valley. With the volume of rain, we have had since August of 2018, I think we are going to have a very busy and very buggy year!

We have several types of scorpion to contend with “the Desert Hairy Scorpion” and the “Bark Scorpion” these are the most common ones found here. The desert Hairy can grow as large as 6/10 inches and has a very fat tail. The bark scorpion can be as large as 3 inches and has a very skinny tail, the bark scorpion has the more painful sting! And can climb walls. Safety first always look before reaching under something to pick it up. If you happen to get stung by a scorpion, you can call poison control at 1-800-222-1222 they can help you access the sting to determine if you will need medical attention or not. If you get stung by a scorpion

#VeryVerrado #veryverrado or #notveryverrado, that is the question....

I think sometimes, as parents, we get so busy we forget to check in with our kiddos to see how he/she is being treated at school, by peers, in athletics, extra-curricular activities & more. How they are being treated by others in general. When is the last time you asked? Not just, “how was your day, sweetie?” We get very busy as parents & at times we forget these very specific questions & many kids don’t want to add stress to their parents plates. Many kids are embarrassed. What is the topic I’m addressing? Bullying One of our kids came home & shared recently that there were kiddos that were saying some very cruel things on a daily basis. Many tears were shed & our hearts were broken for our child. We had to ask ourselves, why are others so cruel, especially to kids. We had to remind ourselves of the reality of bullying that exists in so many parts of our lives. Online & in-person, to children & adults. No matter how old you are, bullying is hurtful. As a counselor in the schools, I saw this far too many times! I recently read a book that put a lot of this into perspective for all of us, young & old. “Not everyone should get a voice in your life. Since our hearts determine the course of our lives, I think it’s time we stand up & fight for them fiercely.” If our kids, or the adults for that matter, allow others to take up space by every personal criticism, online remark or unwanted negative interaction’ “we are opening up precious parts of ourselves to be shaped by

people who would rather break us down than build us up.” We need to help our children, our friends & our society. One way to start, is to share these tips with your little ones & remind yourself of them too! Report the Bully: Tell an Adult or a Friend Stand Up for Yourself Be the Bigger Person Bullying is about the Person who is doing the Bullying not You Stop Rumors & Mean Messages Leave the Situation Log Off Online, Block Emails, Messages or the Bully Bullying can be minor or it can be life altering. Cyber bullying for kids, teens & adults is a real thing that leads to harmful behaviors & suicide. Did you know that bullying victims are between 2-9 times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims. Girls from 10-14 years old may be at higher risk. According to statistics, nearly 30% of students are either bullies or victims of bullying, & 160k kids stay home from school every day because of the fear of bullying. Help protect your kids & anyone else that is a victim. We all deserve to feel safe & protected in our communities & our world. As a counselor for 17 years, a parent of 3 little ones & a resident of this community, I felt it necessary to remind all of us to open ours minds & our hearts, ask the hard questions, listen with an open mind & help others. As our parents taught us, if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all. Home Sweet Home What do an architect, investment advisor, lawyer, and plumber have in common? All four of them serve the public. You wouldn’t want to design a house without a professional architect any more than you would try to manage your money, defend or prosecute a law case, or repair a broken pipeline without the appropriate professional to assist you.

Subsequently, when you are buying or selling a home, you would seek out the advice and professionalism of a real estate agent. Buying a house is probably the single most important purchase in your life. It stands to reason then you would want professional assistance to guide you through the myriad channels of buying or selling a house. Here are some important facts for you to consider that a Realtor will help you with: 1. Listing your house at the correct, marketproven price is critical. Overpricing your house can lead to the risk of not getting buyers to the table at all. The longer a house is on the market, the more negotiable the purchase price becomes. 2. For a Buyer, a good credit rating will be helpful and obtaining a prequalification document will be necessary if you will be financing the purchase. A Prequalification document from your lender states that you are financially responsible and able to meet monthly mortgage payments. 3.Typically you must put 20%, of the agreed

ROC 265621

upon price, down when purchasing a home but there are still options to purchase if you have less than the 20%. 4. A very important thing to remember when purchasing a home is that, as a Buyer, there is no cost for the services of a Realtor. Realtor commission expenses are part of a listing agreement as the Seller lists their home. 5. Finally, Realtors are your guiding light to a successful purchase or sale of a home they handle: price negotiation, agent occupied open houses, marketing in multiple arenas, staging a home and going over every detail of all documents a Buyer and Seller execute. Obtaining a Realtor gives you the peace of mind that you will be represented by a professional in all aspects, whether buying or selling. How To Raise A Reader Summer is an awesome time of year. It’s full of family get-togethers, trips to the pool and vacations. With all that awesomeness, though, sometimes learning falls by the wayside. Research has shown that some children experience summer learning loss, because their minds are not as engaged as they are during the school year. You can help to keep your child’s brain active and prevent summer slide with these five fun learning activities:

Read, read, read. Read to your child or encourage her to read for twenty minutes every day. Taking a trip to the library is fun too, and listening to audio books is great during car trips. Learn a new word every week. Encourage your child to look through a picture dictionary to pick out new words. Make this a game by seeing who can use the new word the most times throughout the week. You can even make a scoreboard! Get cooking. Cooking with your child is a fun

way to teach your child math and reading skills as well as how to follow instructions. Look through a cookbook with your little one and ask him what he would like to make. Hit the road. Take a field trip to a museum, a zoo or an aquarium. Before you go, read a book with your child about the sights at your destination. When you return, you and your child can write a journal entry about your adventures. Go outside. Yes, it is hot here…but the good news is that it gets light very early! Take advantage of the “cooler” mornings and go on a hike, nature walk or bike ride. Pack water, sunscreen, a magnifying glass, and/or binoculars, and take breaks along the way to take a closer look at things. You can even take notes on interesting objects or animals and look up more information about them when you get home.

Money Matters We’re getting close to the tax-filing deadline. For many of us, this means it’s that time of year when we get our biggest financial windfall – a tax refund. If you have recently received a refund, or are expecting to get one in the next few weeks, what should you do with it? If you’d like to maximize the financial benefits from your refund, you might want to consider other options, including the following: • Invest the money. In 2018, the average tax refund was about $2,700. If you were to receive that amount, you’d be almost halfway to the annual IRA contribution limit, which, in 2019, is $6,000. • Pay insurance premiums. Let’s face it – nobody really likes paying insurance premiums. Yet, if you have anyone depending on you, you will certainly need life insurance, and possibly disability insurance as well. And if you want to help protect your financial resources later in life from threats such as an extended stay in a nursing home, you also may want to consider long-term care insurance.

• Contribute to a college fund. It’s never too soon to begin saving for college. So, if you have young children, you may want to think about investing some or all of your refund into a college-savings account, such as a tax-advantaged 529 plan.

• Pay off debts. The lower your monthly debt load, the more money you will have available to invest for the future. Keep in mind, though, that you might not want to look at all debts in the same way. For example, putting extra money toward your mortgage might help you pay it off faster, but you’ll also be funding an asset that might not provide you with the same liquidity as you can get from investments such as stocks and bonds. • Help build an emergency fund. By building an emergency fund containing 6-12 months’ worth of living expenses, you can help yourself avoid dipping into your long-term investments to pay for large, unplanned-for bills, such as a major car repair or an expensive dental procedure. Clearly, you can help yourself make progress toward a number of your financial goals with your tax refund – so put it to good use. Our Goal as Parents Our goal as parents is to help our teens do adolescence well. The fact is, if a teen does adolescence well, adulthood gets much easier. Adolescence is an exciting time for our teens. They experience increased cognitive abilities, learning, and memory which is triggered by puberty. Not only are they dealing with the stresses of adjusting to physical changes, they are learning to deal with intellectual, social and emotional development too.

During this critically important time, the teen brain is hardwiring itself, creating a foundation for adulthood. Thoughts, feelings and actions repeated over time become a set of neurons that become pathways. Those pathways are used for decision-making and behavior patterns in adulthood. Use of alcohol or drugs during this period creates pathways that often lead to poor decision making and a pattern of questionable choices resulting in a lifetime of struggle such

as impulse control, reduced ability to handle problems, emotions, stress, relationships and more. This is a key reason over 90% of people who are addicted to drugs or alcohol started using in their teenage years. Also happening are elaborate changes in the dopamine system of the brain. The dopamine system influences learning about what is rewarding in the environment. And if that’s not enough, throw this into the mix; the teen brain focuses on excitement and risk – that’s why teens get bored easily. What’s exciting to many of them? Rumors, gossip, drama, social media, who’s dating who, and high-risk behaviors that may involve sneaking out of the house at night, sex, stealing alcohol or pot from home, taking a few prescription drugs from the medicine cabinet, and one more thing; not getting caught. All these high-risk behaviors have what the teen brain focuses on – excitement and risk. Our job as parents is to foil these high-risk behavior attempts. Protecting your teen’s brain development is the most important reason to protect our kids form using drugs and alcohol.
