From Me To You... Welcome to the April edition of Main Street magazine!
During a recent conversation with my Mum I found out that my childhood home is up for short term rent. For the next 6 months I could rent my memories. Let me tell you it was very tempting. Due to the location of this house it would probably cost more to get there than it would to rent, and I really could not take advantage of it this year as my summer is ridiculously overbooked already. Plus it is unfurnished and England in the summer is not exactly comfortable to start with. But still. It made me think, can you ever really go home? I flipped through the online pictures and immediately a sense of outrage overtook me. They had cut down nearly every tree that had surrounded my home. The cherry tree that I lay under reading Tess of the D’Urbervilles - gone. The oak I learned to climb and hide in - gone. The broad limbed beauty my siblings and I built a tree house in - gone. What else had changed? Well it seemed they had removed one bathroom only to relocate it on the opposite side of the house. Why? Beats me. In the kitchen there was an addition. A stove. Do people not know how to use an Aga anymore? Even if you don’t know, you can learn. One of my fondest memories was cooking pancakes on the griddle of that Aga. Sure it could be tricky cooking a cake in an oven that was powered with coal but where is your sense of adventure?
challenge if I ever make it onto Survivor. Also the eaves over my sister’s bedroom would collect snow every winter, only to release it in a beautiful waterfall in the spring. In front of her doorway. Inside. I am guessing that may still be a problem. Despite all these glitches it is still the home I grew up in and it holds a special place in my heart. The indoor shutters are still there - 19th century insulation at it’s best. The amazing staircase that wraps around the outside of the entrance hall reminds me of decorating trees at Christmas. And sliding down the bannister, to my parent’s horror. The long driveway where I learned how to use a stick shift and had the horrible job of shovelling when it snowed still winds past fields and around the front of the house. Yes, the house has changed but my home is still there, peeking out behind the improvements that subsequent owners have made. Anyone want to go in on a temporary house share with me?

I noted that with an energy rating of ‘F’ they had not decided to improve the heating or insulation in the house. Now that I could have got behind. Every room had a fireplace to provide heat, and for that reason I can now win the fire starting 4 Main Street

A hero within is‌ A person who shows kindness through extraordinary situations. The true definition of this word is one who shows the qualities of resilience, compassion, abiding power, courage, faith, and independence (The Hero Within: Six Archetypes We Live By). A hero within demonstrates resilience by not letting their mistakes define them. They choose to let these mistakes help them grow. Heroes uses their mistakes and lessons learned to help teach others to become a leader. The trait of compassion is shown by putting all that they are capable of into everything that they do. A person with compassion not only works hard on what they do, but helps others do the same. Compassion means to be sympathetic to others, and a hero within deeply cares about others ideas as much as they do their own. The third quality is that of abiding power. This means having endurance, while continuing
to demonstrate a power of leadership to surrounding people. A hero within demonstrates abiding power by leading others with a positive example. This example may be lead by coaching, teaching, or even simply saying thank you. Courage means not letting fear make a person’s choices, and overcoming the fears that are present. Showing courage also means taking the lead in an uncertain situation. Courage also means being able to encourage yourself to do something that you would not otherwise take part in. Faith has many definitions including loyalty, promise, belief, and trust. Faith is important to the hero within as it allows someone to push themself and do more than they thought was originally possible. Faith also allows trust in others, and is a key component to helping others grow to more than they believe that they can do. A hero within may not have to save the world, but simply be needed as a person to confide in. The final component of a hero within is independence. An independent person does not let others speak for them and continues to campaign themselves and ideas every step of the way. Independence demonstrates the idea of being content with what is happening, and not trying to make a situation seem better than what it is. As demonstrated by the six components, a hero within ties hand in hand with leadership. To be a leader, a person demonstrates many of the same qualities as a person who is a hero within. Resilience, compassion, abiding power, courage, faith, and independence all show key ideas of leadership and tie in with the lessons taught through the seven habits. By applying these characteristics and habits into daily life any person can turn into a hero within. Submitted by Morgan Ruff, 8th grade student, Verrado Heritage Elementary

Home Sweet Home Welcome to Arizona’s beautiful weather and all the exciting events that take place in our area, drawing many visitors from cooler areas of the US and Canada in particular. This time of the year is when the visitors fall in love with our community with its tree lined streets, golf courses, pools, and plenty of gorgeous sunshine. Many visitors look to purchase homes here to continue enjoying our unique life-style in Verrado. Are you in the market to BUY a home? Perhaps it is time to downsize or buy a larger home for your growing family, a second home, or maybe it is time to retire to sunny Arizona for our fantastic weather. Whatever the reason, be certain to have your Realtor with you, from the start to the finish when your Realtor hands you the keys to your newly purchased home.
Realtors are important partners when you’re buying a home. They will provide you with helpful information, on homes and neighborhoods, that isn’t easily accessible to the public. A Realtor’s knowledge of the home buying process, negotiating skills and familiarity with the area you want to live in, is extremely valuable. Buyers should work with their Realtor exclusively, this way they can feel confident in the information they are receiving and find the best home to purchase that fits their criteria. Are you in the market to SELL your home? Now is a good time to sell, as interest rates are continuing to climb and inventory is lower than normal. If you choose to list your home, take the time to get your home ready so pride of ownership is evident. Take the necessary steps to fix the things you have been putting off, clean, declutter, spruce up the yard and paint if required. If your home shows well and is accurately priced, it will sell quickly and for a better price. Your Realtor can advise you on ways to improve the salability of your home. Your Realtor must constantly monitor what is going on in the real estate market, especially in the locations in which he or she specializes. This allows the Realtor to determine the selling prices and features of comparable properties. Whether you are buying or selling, it is very important for your Realtor to keep up with what’s happening in the community, such as commercial and residential developments being built, the quality of schools and amenities etc. These are a few examples of the many benefits your Realtor brings with them when representing you. The Doctor Is In Many patients I see have difficulty sleeping because they have to go to the bathroom multiple times during the night. Men are told it has to do with their prostate being enlarged while women are told they have a distended or prolapsed bladder. While these problems may cause people to urinate more frequently in daytime or nighttime, the dysfunction of the Autonomic Nervous System is the most common cause of frequent nighttime urination. Our Autonomics control all organ function, regulates most hormones, and controls inflammation and other aspects of our immune system. When it quits functioning correctly you begin experiencing problems such as frequent urination, heartburn or constipation, headaches, and chronic pain from excessive inflammation. Low pressure in the brain triggers an increase of thirst. Drinking more liquids temporarily improves blood pressure in the brain. But this low pressure also prevents your kidneys from making as much urine as normal during the day. The consequence
of drinking more than normal, plus urinating less than normal, results in an excessive amount of water collecting in the lower half of your body while you are upright because of gravity. At night when you lay flat to sleep the excessive fluid equilibrates throughout the body just as a half full bottle of water will when tipped on its side. Suddenly your kidneys are presented with an excessive amount of fluid that needs to be filtered and turned into urine. This is why you have to go to the bathroom two or more times at night. This is frustrating when you do not drink much fluid in the evening hoping to sleep but then you still wake up to urinate several times. The answer is found by improving Autonomic function by supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil), protecting your body from the inflammatory effects of dietary vegetable oils by consuming 2 or more tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil per day, and maintaining a healthy balance of intestinal bacteria. Understanding that nighttime bathroom trips are a reversible brain issue may let you finally sleep through the night. Š 2018. Nemechek Consultative Medicine. All Rights Reserved.

Life As A Caregiver I knew the day would come when I could no longer care for my mom in the manner it took to keep her comfortable. I knew it because I had read about it over and over. I knew it because the support group I attend spoke about it. I knew it because that is the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. I knew it because all the people I know whose loved ones are victims of the disease have experienced it. Here is a perfect example of logic and intellect colliding with emotion. I knew the day would come….but when it did, I just couldn’t believe it. I delivered mom to her new care facility: I brought what little stuff she had from my casita, helped arrange her new room the way she liked, gave her a big hug & told her I loved her with all my heart…and left. I wasn’t allowed to return for two weeks. It honestly felt like someone had socked me in the stomach, but I also felt an enormous amount of relief. The kind people at her new home said their job was to take care of her…and MY job was to enjoy her. So when the day finally came when I could visit her, I was so excited and anxious to see her. I came through the beautiful living room and found her sitting in the family room. Her face lit up when she saw me. It was wonderful. There wasn’t too much to talk about since she doesn’t remember much of what happens during her day, but we laughed and hugged….that was all we
Main Street
really needed. I left after about an hour…and would return in two days.
That day wasn’t as positive. She was still in bed when I arrived in the afternoon because she was suffering from one of her horrible chronic headaches. But when I woke her up, she was happy to see me. I could see the pain on her face, but she smiled and decided to have some lunch. So, they brought it to her and we sat together while she ate. Then she said she needed to lie down, so I kissed her and said goodbye. Putting our precious cargo in the caring hands of others is exactly the right thing to do as Alzheimer’s patients decline. These professional caregivers are emotionally removed from the horrible reality of the disease and can care for our loved ones efficiently and without hesitation. The constant reminder of how mom is declining surrounds me mentally but not visually like it did when she lived here. I continue to work on getting over the guilt and the powerless feeling of not being able to control the situation. I am slowly getting my life back, but it is a new life. Life with my mom in a care facility. The reality of this is that I will have to go through this loss again when she passes away. Hopefully, I will be stronger and better prepared. Hopefully. Rx & Opioid Update Physical pain has a tremendous impact on the lives of millions of Americans, many of whom have been prescribed opioids to relieve their suffering. However, we now know these pain relievers are highly addictive; so much so that we now find ourselves in an “opioid crisis.” Reducing youth access to these prescription medications is important because 60 % of teens who report abuse of prescription medicine are getting it from friends or from home. Here are some facts and things you can do to make sure you and your family are protected. Facts: • Rx painkillers and heroin are both opioids • Painkiller addiction often starts by misusing or sharing a legitimate prescription following an injury, surgery or dental procedure. • Anyone using Rx painkillers over an extended period of time (two or three months) will become addicted even when using a low dosage • 80% of heroin users started with prescription drugs
place only you know about. If possible, keep all medicines, both prescription and over-thecounter, in a safe place, such as a locked cabinet your teen cannot access. Spread the word to other households that teens may have access to, and encourage them to secure their prescriptions as well. Safely disposing of expired or unused medicine is a critical step in helping to protect your teens, your family and home, and decrease the opportunity for your teens or their friends to abuse your medicine. What You Can Do How aware are you of the quantities of medications that are currently in your home? Think about this: Would you know if some of your pills were missing? From this day forward, make sure you can honestly answer yes. If you find you need to refill your medicine more often than expected that could indicate a problem. If your teen has been prescribed a medicine, be sure you control the medicine, and monitor dosages and refills. Be especially vigilant with medicines that are known to be addictive and commonly abused by teens, such as opioids, benzodiazepines and stimulants. If you’ve got kids or grandkids, treat Rx medications just like you treated the cabinet under the sink when you had toddlers. Lock them up. “Creating high character athletes through swimming”. That is the mission statement of the USA Swim Club Vitras. The team practices right here in Verrado at the Center on Main’s lap pool under the direction and owner, Sarah Byers. When Sarah purchased the team in January 2013, there were only 25 swimmers. As of today, that number has increased to over 100. Through dedication and hard work, many swimmers have qualified for Regional meets as well as States! But this team has more to it than just swimming; they want to give back to society. These athletes have become involved in the community as volunteers at such events as the Kid’s Triathlon, collecting shoes for third world countries and now on to their latest project- sponsoring a craft/ vendor show for the Mayday Dog Rescue. The event will take place on Saturday, April 7th from 10:30 am-4:00 pm at the Center on Main building. There will a variety of crafters/vendors from quilts, candles and salsa to wrought iron gates and carpet cleaning all for a great cause!
The cause is Mayday Pit Bull Rescue & Advocacy which started with one little dog in a bad situation. Now known as “Mayday”, this little pit bull was once scheduled to be euthanized at the local shelter because he had an eye condition which required surgery and virtually eliminated any chance of adoption. Walk through any shelter and you will notice that the breed that fills the majority of kennels is the pit bull and many are in situations similar to Mayday’s…they have been neglected and require medical care, they have been abused and are shy or unresponsive or bear the scars of their past treatment…they have been bred or made to fight for profit. For Mayday, rescue came in the form of a kind deed by an Animal Control officer who allowed the founder of Mayday, Jennifer Mazzocchi, to adopt him, get him the surgery he so desperately needed and provide him with a loving home. On that day, April 14, 2008, Jennifer decided to dedicate herself to saving pit bulls in similar situations…those whose lives were hanging in the balance between ambivalence and compassion. Mayday is now a happy and healthy member of Jennifer’s family and the rescue group we established in his name is devoted to creating that same future for other pit bulls in need. Following Coach Sarah Byers’ leadership, these swimmers are stepping up to help! For more information on swim sign ups for Vitras Swim Club or donating/ adopting Mayday Dog Rescue, please attend the event as both will have information tables or you may visit their websites. www.swimvitras.com www.maydaypitbullrescue.org

Literacy At Home What was your favorite childhood book? Chances are, you can come up with a title right away. That’s because books create powerful memories of stories and characters that inspire kids’ imaginations and will be treasured for a lifetime. Unfortunately, some children grow up with limited access to books, meaning they’re unable to create those memories so many people take for granted. A lack of books in the home is also linked to lower reading scores and less success in school, according to research by the Family and Community Engagement Research Compendium.
Here’s the good news: this problem does have a solution. Having books in the home has been proven to improve children’s reading performance, cause them to read more frequently and for longer lengths of time, and improve overall attitudes toward learning. It’s clear that promoting literacy in your home and in your community are worthwhile investments of your time and money. Wondering where to start?
16 Main Street
Build reading into the routine: When the kids are small, it’s easy for many parents to create the nightly ritual of story time. Don’t stop just because they’ve started school and are reading on their own. Commit to sitting down every night to read together. When the kids see you reading books too, you set a great example. Ask questions: Asking children questions while you read together helps them develop critical thinking skills. For example, you might ask, “How is the family in this book like our family?” or “The girl in this book likes to swim. What do you like to do?” Give books as gifts: The next time you celebrate a holiday or child’s birthday, consider giving the gift of a book - especially a title or two that you loved growing up. Share, share, share: One way to spread literacy is to help make books more available in your community. Go through your book collection with the kids and decide which titles should be given a new home. They can be donated to schools and public libraries. Even better, when you buy a book, purchase a second copy to donate or give away.

Money Matters Every month, you pay your mortgage. And, depending on your circumstances, you may be able to afford to put in additional payments – perhaps sizable ones. But should you? Or, if you really have the extra money, should you invest it? Initially, you might think it would be quite nice to rid yourself of that mortgage sooner, rather than later. But is it really the burden it seems? Actually, you get some real benefits from a mortgage. It certainly provides something of great value to you – your home. If you got your mortgage – or refinanced your home – within the past decade or so, you are borrowing money at a pretty favorable interest rate, by historical standards. And even assuming a mild rate of inflation, such as we’ve had for the past several years, you’ll essentially be paying off your mortgage with cheaper and cheaper dollars over time. Plus, your interest payments may well be tax deductible. So, given these advantages, an argument could be made that you should be in no hurry to pay off your mortgage. Still, you might be tempted to
Investing is about more than money. make the extra payments because you’ll be building home equity. After all, isn’t this equity valuable? It is – to a degree. The larger your home equity, the more money you’ll get to keep when you eventually sell your home.
But in the meantime, that home equity may be less useful than you might imagine. For one thing, just building more equity won’t make your home more valuable – it will rise (or fall) in value along with whatever’s happening in the housing market. By contrast, you could take the extra money and buy more shares in an investment such as stocks – and the more shares you own, the more valuable your investment will be if the price per share rises. Also, if you were to experience a temporary job loss or some other financial emergency, your home equity might not help you much; if you’re not working, you could even have trouble getting a home equity loan. Conversely, your investment portfolio can offer you greater liquidity, depending on your specific investments. Most investment vehicles, such as stocks and bonds, generally can be sold quickly, without much difficulty. (Keep in mind, though, that if you were forced to sell investments when their price was down, you could take a loss on the sale.)
Clearly, you could gain some advantages by using any extra money to invest, rather than paying down your mortgage. Nonetheless, you may simply get emotional and psychological satisfaction by speeding your progress toward the day when your house is paid off – and that type of satisfaction certainly has value. You’ll need to weigh these intangible factors carefully in deciding whether to increase your investments or make extra mortgage payments – because, ultimately, you need to feel that you’re doing the right thing, for the www.edwardjones.com Member SIPC right reasons. The Bug Guy
Reasons to Hire a Pest Control Professional Pest control professionals are well known for their bug-zapping abilities, but many homeowners still attempt to handle pest infestations by themselves. Usually, they’re motivated by a desire to save money, but this article shows why hiring a professional exterminator in the first place is simply the best choice. 1. The services of a pest control professional may cost less in the long run than attempting to battle household pests yourself. Many homeowners purchase treatment after treatment in a vain attempt to rid themselves of pests. 2. Professional exterminators are trained to safely use chemical pesticides. If these pesticides are applied or stored improperly, damage to property, ill health effects, or even death may occur.
6. Some pests pose a danger to humans in the form of bites or stings. Professional exterminators will wear protective clothing that prevent bees, fire ants, rodents, or other pests from coming into close contact with them. 7. Professional pest control companies often provide an effectiveness guarantee that their treatment efforts will keep pests at bay for at least 30 days. 8. When dealing with chemical pesticides, accidents may sometimes occur and damage to property can result. A professional exterminator will carry insurance to cover any potential damages. 9. Using the services of a pest control professional will save time and effort on your part. It takes much less energy to let a professional take care of things. Another helpful hint provided by Larry Cash, of Estrella Mountain Pest Control
3. The pesticides that professionals use are more powerful and more effective than those that are available for purchase by consumers. 4. Professional pesticides last longer. They provide residual protection for as much as six weeks to five years. 5. An exterminator can identify the pest that has invaded your home and plan a treatment program to target that exact pest.
