From Me To You... Those of you who know me understand that I love to travel. Covid put the kibosh on that for a while, but I am beginning to spread my wings again. In fact, I am writing to you from a foreign country - not the trip I planned, but it has it’s bright spots nevertheless. In my youth I would fill a backpack with whatever clothes were clean, grab my camera, and I was off. Not a care for creature comforts, not much planning at all, but with a ton of enthusiasm! As I have aged my requirements have changed somewhat. The itinerary is considered, reviews taken into account, and excursions mapped out along the way. Packing is more specific too; I have to factor in comfy shoes and adequate layering. What stays with me on the plane now must allow for all the electronic devices - plus chargers. The most useful necessity I travel with though, is my own pillow. I cannot emphasize enough the value of sleeping with the right pillow. Imagine
traveling to a far-flung location and you can’t appreciate all the glory of those Roman ruins because you have a crick in your neck. It is the little things that make so much difference. On this particular trip I am in the land I grew up in, so my packing became even more challenging. I had to bring enough clothes for varied weather possibilities, the aforementioned electronic devices, adapters so I don’t blow up said electronic devices, and most importantly, room to bring home delicacies from my youth. Although I can have almost anything shipped to me in the US, it is vastly more expensive, and I don’t get to try things first. Plus, there are Easter Eggs like you wouldn’t believe here. Giant hollow chocolate spheres filled with yummy confections! Then there is coffee. I do love my coffee, and recently, thanks to a discerning relative who introduced me to Nespresso, I have become a coffee snob. As with my pillow, a great cup of coffee sets me up for a wonderful start to my day. And as I only drink one cup a day, it has to be good! I used to travel and make-do with whatever coffee I could find, but on this last trip I decided that as I was going for an extended stay, and I knew that the only coffee on offer would be instant, I would have a machine shipped to my location. Oh boy am I glad I did. Not only did I find it for a third of the original price but now I can gift it to my hosts when I leave. You could say I gave them two gifts, the joy of a cheerful morning, plus a new appliance.

On Our Cover
Our cover models for March are Verrado residents Hannah and Lily Willette. During Covid, Hannah was determined that Lily would not sit around and waste what she saw as an opportunity. Lily was already an accomplished artist and Hannah had been working on writing a children’s book. She approached Lily and asked if she would be interested in helping with the illustrations. And so their book was born. Hannah knew she wanted to create a book for children that would harken back to books she read as a child. A book whose roots were founded in strong morals, one that would encourage children to be good and create good habits. But not today Miles! is an adorable book with whimsical art and a strong story. We follow the main character, Miles, as he learns and grows. The days of the week add pace to the story as Miles becomes less grumpy and achieves more and more each day. “On Monday the sun woke him up. Myles felt tired and grumpy.
READY TO BUY OR SELL?
CALL ME TODAY! Helping You Make The Right Move
Now back to sleep — just too comfy! But, not today! He brushed his teeth and made his bed, then ate breakfast to get ahead.” Lily created Miles using watercolors and after several revisions he became the cute character we see here. As her drawings evolved, Lily made the choice to have rainbow skin tones to be inclusive and they added a cute little mouse on each page. Hannah would like to make a series of books in the future featuring other animals, but she doesn’t rule out a cameo from Miles. Lily has continued to create art and now sells personalized greeting cards to family and friends. If you are interested you can reach out by emailing hannah@willette. me But not today Miles is available for purchase at www.wildmansbooks.com/product/but-nottoday-myles/

The Dr. Is In!
March is upon us and that means Spring Break for our kiddos is quickly approaching. Providing our children an opportunity to take a break from classroom learning can be a double-edged sword. As a Pediatric counselor, I frequently get questions from parents about how to keep their kiddos entertained during this time. First and foremost, boredom is not a bad thingPsychologist Aaron Benjamin has been quoted saying “Boredom ignites your creativity.” Provide age-appropriate items like art supplies, books, or things to do outside, and let your child solve their own boredom. You can also use this time to help your child learn valuable life skills such as cooking, cleaning or even planting a garden (March is the perfect time in Arizona). If you don’t know how, take the opportunity to learn together by watching YouTube videos, joining a Facebook group, taking a class or finding a neighbor who can teach them. Teach your child compassion by volunteering at a local animal shelter or food bank. I am also a huge fan of playing games with children and teens as a way of connecting. Some of the games they might really enjoy include
Jenga, Uno, Tacos vs Burritos, Candyland, Chutes and Ladders, Clue, Life, Battleship or Phase 10. The UnGame (a stack of cards with age-appropriate questions) is also great to incorporate in many of these games and gives you the chance to really get to know your child. Outside your home, there are also some amazing low cost/free activities in the state. Many valley museums including the Phoenix Art Museum, Heard Museum, Children’s Museum and even the Desert Botanical Gardens have free museum days- call to find out the days and times. We are also incredibly blessed as March is the perfect time to get outside and go hiking so try out the Victory steps, hike the White Tanks or travel a bit farther and hike Vulture Peak. If you have the day, take find a town to explore like Jerome, Bisbee or Tombstone to learn more about the state’s history. Overall, my biggest advice to you as a parent is to use this time as a way to connect with your child. As an adult they won’t talk about the lack of dust in the house, but they will talk about the trip you took together or the museum you visited. Essential Skills in Preschool as Predictors for Success
We all know that early learning includes the the pre-reading and math skills that children will need for school. However, children also need to develop executive function skills. These help us control our thoughts, behavior and emotions, including our abilities to concentrate, focus, transition between activities, reason and plan. They also include working memory, organizational skills and cognitive flexibility. Children who develop these executive skills are more likely to do well in school. Executive function skills can be developed each day by encouraging play through dramatizations, stories and games. Here are some activities that you can do at home to help your children develop these core skills: • Play simple games like Candy Land or Chutes
®
& Ladders. These help children practice selfregulation by learning rules and following directions; • Solve puzzles with them, and introduce harder ones with more pieces as their skills improve; • Learn a simple dance and create new steps together; • Sing your favorite songs together to practice the words and music; • Assign your children simple daily chores, and praise your children when they complete the tasks; • Turn off your tablet or smartphone, and bring out toys that encourage imaginative play, such as blocks and clay. The Bug Guy
Spring in the desert, certainly, is the best time of year! Comfortable weather, not too hot, not too cold unfortunately some of the animals we share the desert with feel the same way.
up the diet of this snake. They also have many predators, and not always because the predator wants to eat them. Animals such as deer, antelope, cows and horses regard the diamondback as a threat, and they may try to trample or stomp the snake. Eagles, hawks, roadrunners, kingsnakes, coyote, bobcats or foxes however are predators who look at these snakes as a source of food.
Western diamondback rattlesnakes are pit vipers. This means that they have a heat sensing pit located behind each nostril that can detect differences in temperature, sometimes differences that are only a fraction of a degree apart. The heat given off by an animal is detected by the snake helping it to determine predator from prey. This snake is considered a generalist, which means that it isn’t too picky about its habitat. It can be found living in deserts, grassy plains, forests, rocky hillsides and areas along the coast. It lives in elevations from below sea level up to 6500 feet (2000m). This species ranges throughout the southwestern United States (Arizona, California, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas) and northern half of Mexico.
Diamondbacks will often spend the daytime hours coiled in the shade of low-growing shrubs, piles of debris, or rocks. They will also utilize underground burrows of other animals. In the winter, they retreat into caves or similar places to hibernate. These snakes can live approximately 15-20 years in captivity and can range in size from 3-5 feet long with a few reaching 7 feet!
Mice, rats, rabbits, gophers, ground dwelling birds, lizards and other small animals make
Rattlesnake prevention methods can include habitat modification and alteration. Areas around your home can be addressed to make it less appealing to rattlesnakes. Controlling prey populations is another key way to prevent a rattlesnake encounter.
The rattle of the rattlesnake is made up of a protein called keratin (the same protein that your hair and fingernails are made of). A new segment is added each time a rattlesnake sheds, but they can shed at different rates. Because of this, and the fact that segments can break off, you really can’t tell a snake’s age by counting the segments.

Money Matters The long-running coronavirus pandemic has fueled a lot of anxieties – including financial ones. But some people have had far fewer worries than others. Consider this: Among those investors who work with a financial advisor, 84% said that doing so gave them a greater sense of comfort about their finances during the pandemic, according to a survey from Age Wave and Edward Jones. Of course, many people experience investment-related fears even without a global health crisis, and that’s not surprising, given the volatility of the financial markets. A financial professional can help you… • Look past the headlines – By helping you construct a portfolio that’s built for the long term and reflects your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon, a financial advisor can enable you to look past the headlines. • Avoid emotional decisions – Many people let their emotions drive their investment choices. When the market goes through a downturn and the value of their investments drops, they sell to “cut losses,” even though these same investments may still have promising futures.
Conversely, when the market is on an uptick, some poeple chase after “hot” investments, even when they become overpriced. A financial advisor can help keep you from making these fear- and greed-based actions by recommending moves that make sense for your situation. • Prepare for the unexpected – Most of us did not need a pandemic to remind us that unexpected events can happen in our lives – and some of these events can have serious financial impacts on us and our loved ones. A financial advisor can evaluate your protection needs and recommend appropriate solutions that fit within your overall financial strategy. • Adapt to changing circumstances – Over time, many things may change in your life – your job, your family situation, your retirement plans, and so on. A financial professional can help you adjust your financial strategy in response to these changes. Achieving your financial goals may present challenges, but it doesn’t have to cause you years of worry and distress – as long as you get the help you need. Furry Friends We’ve had a busy year so far, with a record number of dogs that have needed fostering or adopting, and we’re happy to report that many are in the final stages of adoption while others are on trial or in foster-to-adopt care. We are incredibly grateful to those who have given these dogs a second chance at living a happy life with a loving family. If you are interested in adopting your own furry family member or can foster until the right family is found, please go to CommunityPaws.org to see our available pets. Each pet is spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed and microchipped by a veterinarian. We are also grateful to the many people that answered our plea for donations of can openers. Although Maricopa County Animal Control officers carry pet food while on patrol, they have nothing to open the cans with. The officers were thrilled with the over 50 can openers donated to them by members of our community. There is still time to sign up at CommunityPaws. org for the Rattlesnake Avoidance Training course on March 12. The course will be held at Verrado’s Crescent Park and incorporates

proven techniques to teach your dog to avoid rattlesnakes and warn you of their presence. Not only could this training save your dog’s life, but it could also save yours. This is only offered once a year, so don’t miss this opportunity to participate and sign up today. We saved the best news for last: Community Paws is bringing Dancing with the Stars to Buckeye! This black-tie event will be held at Nardini Manor estate, a truly unique venue sitting on 4.5 beautiful acres in Buckeye. Originally known as “Fields Ranch,” the estate was established by Rev. Ralph Fields in late 1910. Rev. Fields was known locally as a cattle rancher, farmer, missionary and Methodist preacher in the small settlement known as Liberty in what was then known as the Arizona Territory. The property is now owned by Thomas and Kay Nardini, who have overseen the site’s restoration for nearly 20 years. This exciting fundraising event is definitely not something to be missed. Circle Saturday, May 21 on your calendar and watch for more information as we finalize the details. You’re going to love the’ Stars’ lineup! Live Long & Prosper
Say goodbye to fad diets and fleeting exercise trends; it’s time to introduce yourself to a new way of living life to the fullest: The Blue Zones way. National Geographic researcher and bestselling author, Dan Buettner spent two decades researching areas of the world where people live the longest, healthiest lives, and identified five locations where people consistently live to 100 or beyond. He calls these areas “The Blue Zones”: * Sardinia, Italy * The islands of Okinawa, Japan * Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica * Ikaria, Greece * Loma Linda, California, United States
Once these areas were established, Buettner and his team studied and identified the lifestyle characteristics that might explain the longevity of those living in each location, including their diets, levels of physical activity, social networks, views on life’s purpose and more. His findings are fascinating, but to make things even better, they are simple and often fun to achieve.

Grab a buddy Successful centenarians in the Blue Zones put their families and friends first; they keep aging parents and grandparents nearby or in the home, they commit to a life partner, and keep a valued group of friends close.
After a difficult 2021, and a rough start to 2022, it’s officially time to start living a better, longer, and happier way of life - the Blue Zones way.

Internet Safety Today, Americans lose more money to digital crime than to home burglary. About 80% of U.S. adults say they are not doing enough to protect their personal information online, however, most don’t know where to start conversations with their families about internet safety. Here are five tips you can follow to stay safe online.
When possible, enroll in automatic updates and use antivirus software, antispyware and a firewall on your computer.
4. Avoid suspicious websites When shopping online, it’s crucial to know what makes a website safe to explore. Check to see if “https” appears in the URL. Also, review the site for misspellings, grammar mistakes and lowquality images.
1. Get creative with passwords While it’s easier to remember a few passwords for many accounts, you are leaving your family open to identity theft and other cyberattacks. Update your passwords to consist of a random combination of letters, numbers and symbols. 2. Tighten up your social media privacy Most people provide personal information like their name, birthday, job and hometown on social media without a second thought. To help prevent identity theft, review the privacy settings for your social media platforms. 3. Don’t ignore updates Don’t ignore system and browser updates as they provide critical updates that protect against hackers and fix any critical issues in software.
5. Stay alert for phishing scams Phishing attacks are emails, phone calls and texts that appear to come from a reputable source but attempt to instill fear and urgency in the recipient. Phishing scams offer too-good-to-betrue deals, urgent notification to reset an account login or contain an attachment or hyperlinks. To protect your family against phishing, teach your loved ones to: * Never share credit card details or sensitive personal information like your Social Security number via email or phone. * Don’t open any attachments or click embedded links. * Don’t download software from unknown email addresses.

The Great Reset If you look at the numbers, the past few months have been a great time to search for a new job. In the U.S., the number of available jobs in 2021 topped 10 million, which is a record high, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Despite so many open opportunities, 6.3 million Americans were still unemployed as of December 2021.
To help you understand how to navigate this unique, rapidly changing job market, Rob Mundell, senior vice president of Talent Solutions at Charles Schwab, shared his advice for people navigating the job market at every stage of their careers. “Now is a great time to think about how to make the most of your career, but not everyone knows where to start. One of the most fulfilling parts of my job is helping people along that journey,” says Mundell. Entering the workforce: Scale up your networking Today’s remote work environment has flipped hiring norms on its head - making it easier for candidates to land their dream job with fewer applicants applying to open roles. Those looking for a new role should be engaging with their network regularly to help uncover positions that could be their dream role.Think about it, remote work has made it far easier to schedule a 30-minute video call. Reach out and ask for informational interviews. Virtual career events, which are available through schools or professional organizations, have become increasingly common. Never stop networking, even after you land a job.

Rejoining the workforce after a break: Tell your story
A critical skill many individuals in the job market have had to display is the ability to practice perseverance. The good news is that experiencing an employment gap is less of a deal-breaker than job seekers may think, and most companies are sympathetic to the challenges job seekers have faced. In this environment, storytelling is critical. For example, if you had to take time off work to care for family members or prioritize yourself, these are relevant attributes for an employer to consider. Now more than ever, companies are looking for resiliency, work ethic and passion, so don’t undersell your story. Switching roles: Consider a change internally Being part of The Great Reset does not always require leaving your current employer - in fact, as employers work to retain talent, more are willing to accommodate internal career moves. When making a job switch internally, it is important to advocate for yourself, be vocal about what type of work motivates you and express where you see yourself contributing within the company. Regardless of what position you’re interested in, leverage your experience. Don’t underestimate the unique perspective you bring from your knowledge and time within the company.

The last few years have brought incredible challenges to small and micro businesses (SMBs), plus some amazing stories of tenacity and survival. These businesses have seen enormous changes, fueled by consumer habits that are here to stay. If your small business does not yet have an online presence and hasn’t yet mastered ways to accept digitized payments online or in-store, now’s the time to get on board. E-commerce has grown exponentially and it’s not going anywhere. Plenty of tools and tactics are available to help any size business develop and grow their e-commerce capabilities. Here are some tips to help get your business where it needs to be.
SVP Merchant Sales & Acquiring at Visa. “We’ve seen that SMBs who have embraced digital commerce and made changes to the way they operate not only have weathered the pandemic better but are also setting themselves up to thrive in the future.” Build customer loyalty and engagement Social media platforms can help you attract new customers, engage with them and reward their participation and loyalty. Creating content like blogs as well as encouraging customer reviews and postings can help build a sense of community with your customer base.
Create or improve your website
You can also use technology to create a digital customer loyalty program, offering special discounts and promotions for your frequent buyers. Offering benefits like these motivates consumers to do business with you and creates positive buzz about your business.
Developing an attractive, seamless and userfriendly website is not only crucial to compete in today’s marketplace, but it can also be the difference maker in a business’ survival.
For more information on the programs Visa has made available to small and micro businesses visit the Visa Small Business Hub and the Visa Small Business COVID-19 support site.
If you don’t have a website, start here: * Make sure your web address/URL is easy to say, spell and remember. * Select a website host and platform. The host allows your website to have connectivity to the internet, while the platform helps you design and build your website. * If you don’t have a web designer on staff, hire a professional to design a website that’s easy to navigate, and that helps consumers quickly understand your business, its services or products. Create new ways for customers to make digital payments “More than ever, people are engaging across multiple channels - shopping online, in-store and through mobile apps,” said Jeni Mundy, Global
