The Bug Guy The professional pest control industry has always played an essential role in the protection of public health nationwide. Consider that pests spread disease such as West Nile virus, Lyme disease, salmonellosis, hantavirus, and encephalitis. More, stinging insects force hundreds of thousands of people to the emergency room each year, and cockroach and rodent allergens trigger asthma attacks in children. Without the critical work of the professional pest control industry, these alarming statistics would be so much worse. Professional pest control has been recognized as an essential service by the United States Department of Homeland Security. This means, most pest control companies in the United States are still working hard to protect our food supply and our critical national infrastructure, while also continuing to reduce the threat of pest-borne disease to homes and businesses. As communities stay inside and, in many cases, at home, to prevent the spread of COVID-19, pests such as rodents, will have less to deter them from venturing out into broad daylight

MAKE YOUR HOUSE A HOME!!

to find water and food sources. If their typical nesting and feeding locations are depleted due to closed businesses, there is no doubt that they will resourcefully seek a new location for water, food, and shelter. Without proper, ongoing pest control efforts, rodent populations will move from areas where businesses are closed, to areas where food and water are readily available. Homeowners may see pests in new and different places during this period of change. Pests are known to adapt easily to changes in environment and are already quickly adjusting to our new normal. The tower of cardboard boxes waiting to be safely broken down from increasing home deliveries, as one example, make excellent hiding spots for crickets, and scorpions in garages. Remember that the pest control industry stands ready to help you preserve the quality of life you have today. As an essential service, we will continue to do our part to protect the nation’s food supply, as well as your homes and businesses, from pest-related property threats and most importantly, protect your family and loved ones. Pet Moving Day For families moving across town, Purina experts offer tips to help prepare pets for a stress-free move.

1. Take a ‘practice-run’ ahead of time: If you’re moving with dogs, let them explore the new neighborhood before you move if possible. This helps them become familiar with the scents and sounds of the area. For a cat, help him or her get used to their crate. Leave the carrier out with the door open for the cat to explore weeks ahead of time. Take a few short practice drives so the cat is used to traveling in the carrier. This will reduce the stress of travel on moving day. 2. Make a moving day plan: Consider your pets’ safety amidst the chaos of moving day. Keep cats in a space away from the moving process. A bathroom at your new home is an ideal spot to set up food, water and a litter box, so cats are out of the way and comfortable until the move is complete. Dogs can be trickier. It’s best to ask a trusted friend to pet-sit for the day.

3. Help curious cats settle in: It takes time for cats to become familiar with their new surroundings. Make sure doors and windows are closed, as they may try to escape to find their old home. Cats may “disappear” into a hiding place like a closet to calm their nerves. Keep their things in this first room, so they become used to the new home with familiar scents, then move their bedding and scratching posts across the house to make other rooms feel more familiar. 4. Let dogs sniff out their space: Allow dogs to use their natural instincts to smell and explore by walking them on a leash for their first tour around the house. The sooner they get used to the scents of their new environment, the sooner they’ll feel at home. Maintain a regular routine and spend extra time with them at home to help them feel secure. Avoid leaving your pup outside unattended at first; a new environment may bring out new skills you didn’t know your dog had like jumping over or digging under fences as an attempt to return to familiar ground. After you move, give your pet extra attention. Your presence will have a calming effect and reassure them. Come see us at our new store!

Focusing on Reading Readiness March is National Reading Month! Many parents look forward to announcing that their child can read, but the truth is children are reading long before they can interpret the pages of the book. As with most things in life, reading requires the proper building blocks before it can begin. Reading begins with language and how it relates to your child’s world. Creating a language-rich environment will help your child’s vocabulary grow. Language develops with every interaction you have with your child – infants begin by reading their parents’ facial expressions while older children develop their vocabulary by listening and eventually repeating what their parents say. Verbalize your child’s world and he or she will begin to repeat sounds and syllables. A print-rich environment may also help prepare your child for reading by making the connection between your child’s world and the symbols

®

we use to communicate, so make your home an active learning environment. Start labeling household items with pictures and words so your child will learn to associate everyday items with their symbols. Lead by example and let your child see you read often. Teach your child to respect books, that pages will rip and bindings will break; your child will learn that you value books and their content if you set a high expectation for their care. Remember, it takes many interactions with the alphabet and phonemic awareness for reading skills to develop. While it may be difficult to remain patient, be assured that reading will happen when your child is ready! Submitted by Nicole Bigham, On-site Owner, The Goddard School in Buckeye-Verrado

Kid Stress

Due to the pandemic, everyone’s lives have been turned upside down. This is especially true for families coping with altered routines at school, learning from home or both. Children are stressed about their routines, and parents are anxious, too. Emily Hanley, mother of 6-year-old Cameron, said this year became increasingly challenging for her family. “Bedtimes got later, meals were refused, and every little choice became a battle. We all put up a strong front for those first six months, until getting back into a school routine threw us off,” she said. Research has shown that children often cope with stress by projecting their feelings and worries onto toys, stuffed animals and dolls. The Committee for Children, a global nonprofit

leader in social-emotional learning, spent more than three years studying this concept, and then teamed up with Sproutel, a play-focused design studio, to bring their research to life. The result of their collaboration? Purrble - an interactive toy designed to help children learn to self-soothe during stressful times. “When kids respond to stress with emotional outbursts, it can be hard on the whole family,” said Kate Gallo, product manager for Committee for Children’s Innovation Lab. “Purrble isn’t about getting rid of big feelings, but empowering kids to understand they’re in the driver’s seat when big feelings happen. Research has proven children can learn to calm themselves by helping someone else calm down.” When the toy is first turned on or is startled their heart beats quickly, inviting kids to calm them down. High-tech sensors allow Purrble to respond to touch and fidgeting, so when kids pet their companion, Purrble’s vibrational heartbeat slows into a gentle purr. In a year when everyone - kids and adults alike is having a challenging time finding calm, Purrble is lending a paw. For more information visit www. purrble.com

SDOH & PDOH Many factors may impact a person’s health that go beyond the doctor’s office. Some of the most well-understood are referred to as Social Determinants of Health (SDOH). These are the conditions in which you live and work that affect your well-being, including factors such as food security, housing and transportation.

Recently, researchers with UnitedHealthcare and AARP Services, Inc. developed a framework called Personal Determinants of Health (PDOH) for understanding the factors that help people cope with adversity and thrive through aging. These characteristics also tend to help people get the most out of their health care experiences, physician interactions and community resources. This framework can act as a complement to SDOH with the intention of creating a holistic picture of one’s health.

The idea of PDOH depends upon strong resilience - the ability to bounce back from life’s challenges and cope with difficult experiences - which individuals may build and improve upon as they age. UnitedHealthcare and ASI research proposes that resilience is built through three key characteristics: * Purpose: Having goals, a sense of direction and meaning in life * Possibility: Optimism regarding the future and/ or positive perceptions about aging * People: Having strong social connections to support optimal health outcomes Together, UHC and ASI continue to study the factors of PDOH to learn more about its importance for ultimately leading to better health outcomes and experiences with care. Through numerous programs, they have learned it is possible to strengthen resilience even later in life. Intervention approaches showing promise have focused on multiple components, including: * Happiness and optimism games * Mindfulness practice * Problem-solving techniques * Expressive writing * Friendship and peer support programs By first defining important personal determinants to support resilience, these interventions can be tailored to increase the possibility of improved health outcomes, member experiences and overall quality of life.

Furry Friends Have you ever heard of World Art Day? I hadn’t either, but it’s a real thing. This annual event serves to promote awareness of creative activity and will be celebrated on April 15. “What does that have to do with my pet?” you ask. Let me explain. Community Paws is organizing a fundraising event they are calling Pet Portraits. What better way to immortalize your pet companion – living or past – than having a portrait made and shared with your community? But there’s more. In addition to having a portrait made, you or someone you know who likes to draw, paint or digitally create can become one of our selected artists. Here’s how it works. We will send a picture of your pet to one of our artists and they will create

a portrait to the best of their ability. It doesn’t have to be perfect. The idea is that everyone can participate, no matter what age or skill level. It will be fun to see what our artists come up with and you will receive a special, one-of-a-kind work of art for a donation that will go 100% to Community Paws. March 14 is the deadline to either order your portrait or register as an artist at www. communitypaws/events. Portraits will be displayed on The Village Green on April 17. To really get into the spirt of things, why not attend the event in style by wearing a Community Paws Tshirt? They can be purchased from our booth at the Verrado Farmers Market, which is held each Sunday on The Village Green. March is also Poison Prevention Awareness Month. Make sure your pet stays safe by educating yourself on items that could be harmful to them, things like chocolate, rat poison and human medications. Notice: Junior Division’s monthly meetings have been postponed until further notice. Submitted by Lyndie Mason Warner, a Verrado resident, for Community Paws
