From Me To You... If you are privileged to live long enough you will come to realize that everything changes. Relationships change, circumstances change, heck even people change. The key in life is to roll with those changes, learn from them when you can, and move along to the next phase in your life.
Personally I usually enjoy change. As an optimist I will always look for the good in a situation or person, and that means that even when something knocks me for a loop I will dust myself off and find the positive. In fact I have come to see change as a personal challenge. What can we do with this? Does it open up opportunities that were not there before? Moving across the country can be scary but what about the new best friend who is waiting to be discovered? Or the amazing vistas that you have only seen on a computer screen? What about the smell of creosote after it rains? OK, not everyone will like that one but I do! Perhaps my love of change is inherited, my paternal grandmother lived in government housing and come see our large selection of outdoor could not afford accessories to buy a new house. So the people on her street would swap homes 2 0 y e a r w a r r a n t y P A T I O F U R N I T U R E every few O U T D O O R W A L L A R T years. My uncle S o u t h w e s t d e c o r emigrated to METAL CACTI R U G S New Zealand to effect change in his life - a poor farmer, he saw an opportunity to work for land in a new country shop local 116 E Western Ave | Goodyear | 623-299-8000 and he lived
out his life as a contented kiwi farmer, with many acres to call his own.
I love moving, not the physical effort of the job, but the change and newness of a different situation thrills me. Of course moving is a time consuming and expensive proposition and is not always realistic, so when I am in one place for too long I start to change my house on the inside. Some would call it updating, for me it releases the pressure of ‘sameness’. I have known people who have bought a home after visiting the model and placed their own versions of that furniture in exactly the same configuration as the home they first saw. Crazy. And they kept it that way, for as long as they owned the house! Now that makes my head ache. When my husband worked in corporate America and was away on business trips I would make the most dramatic changes. He would return to rooms painted different colors and furniture rearranged. I have even moved rooms around inside the house. One of our daughters commented that during her childhood she had a bedroom in almost every room of the house. True story. Now that he works from home I have to fly thing by him first. My long suffering husband has come to accept my need for change and usually agrees with my ideas although painting the kitchen white took me two years of persuasion, but as soon as the first door was done he agreed it was the right move. Now that I think of it I can remember my father often using the phrase, “A change is as good as a rest.” I believe I have taken that expression to heart and I encourage you all to do the same.

On Our Cover
Have you seen the hand? Many have, and it is a result of Buckeye’s Get in the Way Campaign. Each spring our youth and adults promote a no use message to reduce youth substance use in our community. As the fastest growing city in America, Buckeye has the unique opportunity to develop and implement substance abuse prevention as part of the norm in our community. The Way Out West Coalition (WOW Coalition) and Youth4Youth are spearheading this effort. The WOW Coalition was formed in 2009 to address underage drinking and substance use in the community. Today, our success is due to an ever growing team of more than 50 committed members with representation in all twelve sectors of our community which includes; parents, youth, government leaders, law enforcement, first responders, educators and schools, business owners, faith-based organizations, civic volunteer organizations, healthcare professionals, youth serving organizations and substance abuse treatment organizations; all working to promote a prevention message throughout the greater Buckeye area.
These members not only represent the diversity of our community, they also bring critical content expertise that is needed to effectively reduce youth substance use in our community. Moreover, the WOW Coalition is now recognized as the “go-to” source of youth substance use prevention in our community, and we are seen by community members as a vehicle of change for promoting positive and healthy child outcomes. Our youth component (Youth4Youth), has been instrumental in sharing the message. All our marketing materials feature local youth involved with the Get in the Way campaign. You will see them on banners, billboards, posters and table tents. Last year, these youth placed messaging materials in over 195 area businesses, schools and organizations in Buckeye. Our youth will be facilitating this year’s Get in the Way campaign in late March. Our goal is to help teens do adolescence well. Getting our youth through adolescence drug and alcohol free translates into success as an adult and greatly reduces the odds of individuals developing a substance abuse disorder in their lifetime. Over 90% of those in treatment for substance use disorder started using as a teenager. Compare that to only 3% who began using after the age of 21. Ways to be easily involved: Attend our monthly coalition meeting where you will find great information and speakers. Invite us to your present at your next staff meeting, HOA, Block Watch, church, or civic group meeting. We speak on a multitude of topics. Join our mailing list for updates and reminders Follow us on social media Volunteer Visit our website: www.wowcoalition.org Attend our workshops and trainings For additional information visit http://www. wowcoalition.org or contact at (623) 208-3230 or email: larry.tracey@wowcoalition.org.

Positive Parenting
Preparing for the first day of kindergarten starts now
The holidays are behind us, but if you have a preschooler who will be entering kindergarten next school year, it’s not too early to start getting them ready. In fact, many schools hold their kindergarten registration events beginning this month. First Things First (FTF), Arizona’s early childhood organization, has many suggestions on what families can do at home to prepare their child. The FTF Kindergarten Readiness page, found at https://www.firstthingsfirst.org/resources/ kindergarten-readiness/, is a resource for parents and caregivers to help children be prepared for school success. Superintendent Jodi Gunning tells parents from the Litchfield Elementary School District that they can help their children thrive in kindergarten and beyond by fostering deep emotional connections that help little ones feel safe and loved.

that come with starting school.” Some ways to help your child transition to
· Before the first day, talk with your child about what to expect during the school day and types of after-school activities they may be involved in. The more details kids know, the less anxious they will feel. · Rehearse for the big day with test-runs of the new routine. · Read with your child at least 20 minutes per day. Try books that repeat words. Ask questions like, “What do you think happens next?” · Teach your child how to use the bathroom by themselves, to wash their hands after going to the bathroom and before eating, to blow their nose and sneeze into their elbow. By turning everyday moments into learning moments, we can send our young kids to school with the skills and confidence that will help them succeed in kindergarten. Submitted by Brett Benninghoff, Southwest Maricopa, Community Outreach Coordinator To learn more, visit FirstThingsFirst.org.
“The single most important thing parents can do is foster a strong sense of confidence and safety in their young learner,” she said. “Strong connections give children the confidence to master new tasks and embrace the challenges

Which Is Right? Deciding between the emergency room and urgent care can be a tough and stressful decision especially if you’re not feeling well, are in pain or feel you need immediate medical attention. The following guide is meant to help your decision-making process but remember…always follow your gut. If something about your health feels so off that you’re considering a visit to the emergency room, don’t let anything on the following list stop you. Urgent Care MAY be the right choice if you… • have a medical issue that is not threatening your life or a body part • have mild to moderate cold or flu symptoms • have what seems like a minor bone fracture • would normally see a primary care doctor but don’t want to wait • have a fever without a rash • are vomiting or have persistent diarrhea
Freedom
• have abdominal pain • think you are dehydrated • have a sprain or strain • have a small cut that may require stitches
It’s Important to Note… Urgent care is NOT a replacement for regular, preventive care that you would receive from your primary care provider. You should never put off routine screenings and check-ups with the thought that you can just go to urgent care if you need medical attention. Urgent care is meant to be a complement to your normal preventive care, not a substitute. The Emergency Room MAY be the right decision if you… • are having a hard time breathing. • have chest pain • are experiencing sudden paralysis, trouble speaking, or confusion. • are dealing with any illness or injury that is limb- or life-threatening. • have weakness/numbness on one side • have slurred speech • fainted or have a change in mental state • have serious burns • have a head or eye injury • have a concussion/confusion • have broken bones and dislocated joints • have a fever with a rash • have severe cuts that may require stitches • have facial lacerations • are experiencing severe cold or flu symptoms It’s Important to Note… If you’ve determined that emergency care is the proper course of action, calling 911for an ambulance means paramedics can begin delivering life-saving treatment on the way to the hospital, which can be the difference between life and death for a stroke or heart attack victim. #VeryVerrado Two of the Big Ones
The weather is awesome, people are getting out and Verrado has 2 big events in March. Founders Day March 28th and 29th and March Of The Fallen March 14th. Every time I drive through Verrado lately, I see more walkers, bicyclist, joggers, children playing outside and stroller pushers. It’s a great sight! All of these things are the true characteristics of Verrado. The beauty that Verrado has to offer with its tree lined streets, multiple parks and trails, shopping and dining and community activities. March Of The Fallen The Alan McMurray MOTF Founders Ruck is a 4.5 mile ruck dedicated to honoring the fallen brothers and sisters who gave the ultimate sacrifice during the war efforts of Operation Iraqi Freedom , Operation New Dawn, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Inherent Resolve and Operation Freedom’s Sentinel. Their watch is over now so we carry their weight upon our backs and continue onward in their honor. There will also be a non-perishable food drive after the ruck and will be donated to affcb.org. There are 3 age categories, 17-39, 40-54 and 55 and older.
Founders Day The annual big celebration. March 28-29. Verrado’s weekend long party bringing family and friends together to celebrate the community’s unique heritage. In the past there have been big names on stage such as B-52’s, Train, Blues Traveler, The Beach Boys, Fast Ball, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Romantics, Andy Grammer, Steven Page, Rick Springfield and this year’s Top Performer will be 38 Special. This is such a great event with many activities to bring the community together. What else is going on in March? Spring training allows new players to try out for roster and position spots, and gives established players practice time prior to competitive play. Spring training has always attracted fan attention, drawing crowds who travel to the warm climates of Arizona and Florida to enjoy the weather and watch their favorite teams play, and spring training usually coincides with spring break for many US college students. Spring training typically starts in mid-February and continues until just before Opening Day of the regular season, traditionally the first week of April. Spring training by major league teams in sites other than their regular season game sites first became popular in the 1890s and by 1910 was in wide use. Hot Springs, Arkansas has been called the original birthplace of Spring Training baseball. Community Service Commitment to family and community is a key fundamental in raising a well-rounded child. Children can make a difference in our communities by participating in locally sponsored events as well as charitable outreach programs. They can learn about the importance of helping others and the significance of giving and being a part of their communities. To build a foundation of good citizenship with your children, foster the essential skills of friendship, compassion, cooperation and kindness. Lead by example and teach your children the significance of helping others. Although there may be some limitations, children of almost every age can give back by participating in their communities every day: • Teach children to love and respect nature - plants, animals and even insects. It’s okay
to catch crickets, butterflies and tadpoles as long as they are set free after a reasonable observation time. • Respect the property of others. For example, be a good role model and remember to clean up after the family dog when out on walks in your community. • Protect the planet and encourage your children to recycle. • Your local library can be a great resource for community information. Ask the local library or check the internet for a list of community events and service organizations that are child friendly and in need of volunteers. Look for ways to give back to your community that can empower your children and build their self-esteem. Let them learn to create positive change in their own lives and the lives of others. Is Your Teen Streesed? Stressful situations at home, work and school are real and can be extremely detrimental to the success of your teen throughout the academic year. So how can parents help their children avoid, manage and relieve stress? The following tips provide a great start: • Teens need to take time for self-care and to have a little fun. Find activities that support their ability to be successful. If they don’t like sports, don’t expect signing them up for football to help.
• Laugh. Strive to have one big belly laugh a day. • Practice positive self-talk.
• Encourage mantras such as “this too shall pass” or “I can handle this.” • Make sure the things that bring your teenager joy are included in daily and weekly routines. • Let your teenager know it’s ok to share their feelings with friends and family. • Make the best out of stressful circumstances – be optimistic – your outlook, attitude, and thoughts influence the way they see things.
• Help teenagers learn to change their thinking. Do they know it’s ok to fail at something? Help them see failure as opportunity.
• Let your teenager know it’s ok to ask for help. People who have a strong network of family and friends manage stress better.
• Take assignments one step at a time and set obtainable goals. Ask if you can help them prioritize their tasks and then encourage them to focus on one at a time.
Helping your child learn how to avoid stressful situations and manage stress when they’re in the heat of it, prepares them for the academic years to come.
When stress levels become more than a motivating tool, or when pressures are too intense or last too long, it may be a sign your teen is in stress overload. In order to avoid this situation, follow these tips:
Submitted by Alysson Zatarga, Carrie Holmes, and Kathy Villa, Program Directors for the School and Community-Based Counseling Services program at Southwest Behavioral & Health Services.

The Bug Guy Let’s Separate Stinging Pest Myths from Pest Facts
As our weather warms up, let’s talk about the stinging pests that are a natural part of the outdoors and typically viewed simply as a nuisance, many believe that they have a full understanding of the risks associated with such. Yet, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) warns that there are a multitude of myths about summer insects that homeowners subscribe to - most of which wrongly minimize the threats of stinging insects, mosquitoes and ants. Consider the myth of stinging insects, which many believe must be physically provoked to attack and sting. However, stinging insects, especially wasps, do not have to be physically
touched/provoked to attack and sting. Rather, these pests must only feel that they or their colony is threatened, which can simply happen when a human gets too close. Stinging insects send over half million visitors to hospital emergency rooms every year. Another prominent pest myth is that mosquitoes are only active at dawn and at dusk. Although most are active then, mosquito activity is not limited to these times of day. Mosquitoes feed on blood, which means that they will be seeking out meals whenever they prepare for reproduction. Although known for causing itchy, red welts, today, mosquitoes pose a much different threat due to their ability to transmit West Nile virus. There is also the common myth that seeing one ant indoors does not equal a full-blown infestation. Although this can be true, ants leave an invisible chemical trail for other ants to follow once they locate a food source. If that food source is in your home, you can count on ant colonies developing in or near your home. Let’s set the record straight about some of the common myths we maintain about scorpions. “All scorpions are deadly”, this one is easy to debunk. The bark scorpion is the only scorpion in North America that has been known to be deadly. “scorpions will chase you across the room if you disturb them” nothing could be farther from the truth. Scorpions have very poor eyesight, approximately 6 inches, however they hunt by feeling ground vibrations. So, if you see a scorpion and its running towards you, it is actually running from a threat in a random direction, it’s a coincidence. Money Matters It’s important to have cash available for your everyday spending and the inevitable rainy day. However, you also need to develop a cash strategy that can contribute to your long-term financial success. But just how much cash do you need? And in what form? To answer these questions, it’s useful to look at the four main uses of cash: • Everyday spending – Your everyday spending includes the cash you use for your mortgage, utilities, groceries and so on. As a general guideline, you should have one to two months of living expenses available during your working years, and perhaps a year’s worth of living expenses when you’re retired. You’ll need instant access to this money so it may be a good idea to keep the funds in a checking or cash management account. • Unexpected expenses and emergencies – If you needed a major car repair or a new furnace, or if you incurred a big bill from a doctor or
dentist, would you be able to handle the cost? You could – with an established an emergency fund. During your working years, this fund should be big enough to cover three to six months of living expenses; when you’re retired, you may be able to get by with one to three months’ worth of expenses, assuming you have additional sources of available cash. You’ll want your emergency fund to be held in liquid vehicles that protect your principal, such as savings or money market accounts or short-term certificates of deposit (CDs). • Specific short-term savings goal(s) – At various points in your life, you may have a specific goal – a new car, vacation, etc. – that you’d like to reach within a year or two. Your first step is to identify how much money you’ll need. Next, you’ll need to choose an appropriate savings vehicle. You could simply put more money in the accounts you use for everyday cash, or even in your emergency fund, but you would run the risk of dipping into either of these pools. Instead, consider opening a separate account – and tell yourself this money is for one purpose only.
• Source of investment – You can use cash in two ways as part of your overall investment strategy. First, cash can be considered part of the fixed-income allocation of your portfolio. The second benefit Straight talk of cash, in terms of investing, is from someone it’s there for you to purchase a who knows you new investment or to add more Sound financial advice shares in an existing investment. means only making In any case, you probably don’t recommendations that want to be too cash heavy, so you line up with your goals and risk tolerance. might want to keep no more than 10% of your fixed-income assets Thoughtful guidance: It’s how we make sense in cash. of investing.

Sleepaway Camp
As a parent, you worry about your child’s future. Will they be confident enough to weather life’s ups and downs? Will they find happiness and success? How will they navigate their future challenges? According to research by the American Camp Association (ACA), a traditional sleepaway camp - where a child or teen spends 1-4 weeks away from home - helps them experience growth and development. Enhanced self-development Camp can be a huge boost to their confidence,
independence and resilience. It also builds social-emotional skills to benefit them through adulthood. * Confidence comes from doing. A child who must do things on their own, without a parent nearby, learns they can accomplish much more than they thought. * Becoming self-reliant and developing a feeling
of competence comes from attempting until they succeed. * Learning to persevere through discomfort helps a child feel like they can handle anything, creating resilience. Expanding horizons Being away from home means your child leaves their comfort zone. Sharing space with kids they’ve never met, from different backgrounds, states or countries is also a completely new experience. Exploring challenging activities expands your child’s world, which can be fun, exhilarating and self-affirming. Trying a variety of new things changes a child’s idea of what they’re capable of - much more than camps focusing on one subject - fostering curiosity, perseverance, a love of learning and inner confidence. Unplugging from technology Giving up technology for weeks may seem impossible, but the results are astonishing. A decrease in anxiety and an increase in happiness are noticeable in most campers when they unplug. In the ACA research, teens and children who unplugged reported learning how to live in the moment. They stopped worrying about the past or future, instead focusing on their present experiences. They develop better social skills while reading each other’s non-verbal cues, like facial expressions and body language. Face-toface interaction is the only way to develop those skills. Lifelong friendships Kids at sleepaway camp bond with other campers in a deep, lasting way. Sharing the camp experience creates a sense of community, fostering lifelong friendships. In the ACA research, children and teens said making new friends was the best part of camp. They - and their parents - said social skills learned from camp helped them develop friendships at school, long after camp ended. While you may initially feel reluctant to send your child to camp, giving your child this gift can be life-changing.
