From Me To You... Every now and then I find myself scrolling through an online newspaper from my youth. It is a well known and respected piece of journalism, but I don’t usually go there to read the news. I gravitate towards a piece called ‘A Letter To...’ in which ordinary people write letters that they would never send to the intended recipient.
There is another side to reading these letters too. The sneaky side of superiority. That feeling you get when you read an advice column or watch Reality TV.
I suppose it is a catharsis for them, and me in a way. It allows me to explore and validate (in some instances) feelings I have had about some situations.
And let’s face it, Reality TV is the train wreck of humanity. I do love to watch it, sampling the lives of people I would never meet in real life. Realizing that no matter how much money or fame these fabulous people accumulate, they have problems too. Their grass may seem greener on the other side of that fence, but they still have to mow it.
Some of the letters are scandalous “A letter to the wife of my boyfriend.” Or “A letter to the couple who died in my house.” Others are more humorous, “A letter to my lazy spouse.” Then there are the ones that tug on your heart. “A letter to my brother who passed away.” And “A letter to our surrogate, who had second thoughts.” Reading these letters, I feel a sense of completion for the authors. They have been able to say their piece and get those feelings out in a healthy way.
“My life may have problems but thank goodness it is not as bad as this!”
Catherine Uretsky Editor, Main Street magazine info@estrellapublishing.com 623-594-928
We have all been in situations that were left unfinished. The witty comeback you wished you had thought of at the time but now it would be too late, perhaps even petty, to say out loud. These letters allow the writers to speak those thoughts and feel those feelings in a safe way. Of course they are all anonymous and I am sure the recipients don’t ever read them, but sometimes just putting things on paper is enough. I am sure you have been told in the past that when your feelings are at a boiling point you should write an e-mail then delete it. I have written many quick, emotion filled e-mails then thought better of them and hit the delete button. These letters are an extension of that - the ability to blow off steam and get your point across without hurting anyone else’s feelings. Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

On Our Cover
March is Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month! March may not hold as much significance in your home, but in the home of our Verrado neighbors, the Topie Family, it means everything. Geno Topie, their 9-year-old son, was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at 9 months. The Topie’s spent the first year of his life in & out of hospitals all over the country seeking out the best care for their son. They moved to Arizona when Geno was 5 because doctors believed that a more active lifestyle, in a place with year-round, outdoor living, would help him thrive. Swimming is one of the best therapies for a person with CP & what better place to swim year-round? With all of their efforts & early interventions, Geno is thriving as a 5th grader at Verrado Heritage Elementary School. Anyone that knows Geno would say he has an old soul & a huge heart. An example of G’s kindness was evident when he shared, “I am glad I have Cerebral Palsy, because if it wasn’t me, then someone else would have it and I would rather be the one with CP, if it meant that someone else wouldn’t have it at all!”
How many 5th graders do you know that would rather be disabled then see someone else with a disability? Cerebral Palsy or as he calls it “CP”, is a condition marked by impaired muscle coordination, typically caused by damage to the brain before or at birth. Geno is diagnosed, left-hemiplegic CP, which means it only severely impacts the left side of his body, most noticeably his left arm & leg. Even at his young age, he has already undergone 3 eye surgeries, a muscle extension surgery in his leg & numerous rounds of botox injections throughout his body. He spent 3 months of his life in an inpatient feeding program in order to learn how to eat. Despite all of his challenges in life, weekly visits to physical/occupational therapy, speech & habilitation, wearing braces on his leg and glasses, he still carries on with a smile. He shared that he is grateful for the support of his family, parents and his two sisters, Clare and Emma. He has many angels watching over him! Although Tiffany & Matt Topie never anticipated CP being a part of their life, they have embraced it as a blessing. “Geno has given us so much more then we could ever give him as parents. He has taught us the true meaning of life. We are definitely the lucky ones!” Cerebral Palsy awareness month is celebrated & recognized with a green ribbon. Each year, Verrado Heritage Elementary School has a “green-out” to honor Geno & everyone that has CP. Kids are encouraged to wear green to school to support their classmate! It means the world to Geno & is another example of what spreading a little kindness can do for just one person. Next time you are out in Verrado and you see Geno, remind him of what an inspiration he is to others. Next time you dress in green, think of Geno Topie & all of those who have CP.

You’re Invited… Join us on Sunday, March 31th at 11am for the Verrado Founder’s Day Dog Show! This weekend marks Verrado’s 14th annual Founder’s Day Celebration. If you are a dog owner in Verrado, please bring your pups by so that they can strut their stuff in this fun-filled family event. Winners will receive neighborhood points and a prize ribbon. Come cheer on your favorite pup!
The March of the Fallen takes place on Saturday, March 16th, beginning at 8am. This 4.5-mile ruck through the Verrado Trailhead honors our fallen brothers and sisters who gave the ultimate sacrifice during the war efforts of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation New Dawn, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Inherent Resolve, and Operation Freedom’s Sentinel. Community Paws Junior Division will be offering support and water stations along the way. If you’d like to register for this event, please visit: www.marchofthefallen. org. We hope to see you there!
Our Rattlesnake Avoidance Training with Jim from Viper Voidance was a huge success with many educated canine graduates last month. Dogs can be trained to stay away from rattlesnakes. Proven techniques teach your dog to avoid rattlesnakes and to warn you of their presence. Accordingly to ViperVoidance.com, there is no true hibernation season for rattlesnakes. Rattlesnakes can be active ANY time of year, especially here in the desert. Community Paws hosts this training here in Verrado each spring so if you missed it, consider marking your calendar for next year! A special Thank You to wildlife advocate Linda Bolon and to all who came out for Project Coyote night last month. We hope you enjoyed this informative presentation. As a reminder, our Junior Division’s next monthly meeting is on Tuesday, March 26th from 4:30pm – 6pm at the Center on Main. If your child is ten years or older, love animals, enjoys working as a team, and would like to make a difference in the world, we welcome you to stop by. The Bug Guy
Spring is in the air, finally! It’s warming up, here in the west valley, and the bugs are coming out, and with the winter we just had its no wonder that our spring is going to be very busy with insect activity. Let’s talk about what bugs were going to be seeing this month. Crickets, earwigs, and quite a few other harmless herbivorous insects will be out in above average volumes, based on our very wet winter. We will also see and increase in flying insects this spring. We will also see an increase in predatory insects such as the dreaded scorpion, bees, wasps, ants, and of course spider activity. As our nights start to warm up, we will be seeing a big upswing in all insects. Let’s talk termites, its termite swarming season and this spring is appearing to have all the environmental factors to support a good environment for termites to really have a great
swarming season. It’s a good idea to look at your foundation wall regularly for signs of termite activity, like termite shelter tubes, or tube stains that can indicate current or past activity. If you are not sure what to look for, you can call a professional or check out www.goggle.com images and look up termite tubes phoenix, here you can see pictures without giving your personal information to a company. Coyote mating season is in full swing so keep an eye on your small dogs, and cats when you let them out, and remember a Coyote can go up and over a 6ft fence or wall, so keep an eye out for any discarded crates or boxes that say ACME on the side, as this could be an indicator of enhanced coyote abilities. Coyote mating season can go thru the end of March. Bobcat mating season is February thru March and as you keep an watch on your small pets its important to look up at your roof line as bobcats can easily access this area too. #VeryVerrado In Major League Baseball (MLB), spring training is a series of practices and exhibition games preceding the start of the regular season. Spring training allows new players to try out for roster and position spots, and gives established players practice time prior to competitive play. Spring training has always attracted fan attention, drawing crowds who travel to Arizona and Florida to enjoy the weather and watch their favorite teams play, and spring training usually coincides with spring break for many college students. Spring training by major league teams in sites other than their regular season game sites first became popular in the 1890s and by 1910 was in wide use. Hot Springs, Arkansas has been called the original «birthplace» of Spring Training baseball. Grapefruit League-The Philadelphia Phillies were the first of the current major-league teams to train in Florida, when they spent two weeks in Jacksonville, Florida in 1889. Spring training in Florida began in earnest in 1913, when the Chicago Cubs trained in Tampa and the Cleveland Indians in Pensacola. One year later, two other teams moved to Florida for spring training, the real start of the Grapefruit League. Except for a couple of years during World War II, when travel restrictions prevented teams training south of the Potomac and Ohio rivers, Florida
hosted more than half of the spring training teams through 2009. Since 2010, major league teams have been equally divided between Arizona and Florida during spring training, with 15 teams in Florida and 15 teams in Arizona. All but six of the major league teams have gone to spring training in Florida at one time or another. Cactus League-According to the autobiography of former Cleveland Indians owner Bill Veeck, the avoidance of racism was one reason the Cactus League was established. In 1947, Veeck was the owner of the minor league Milwaukee Brewers and the team trained in Ocala, Florida. Veeck inadvertently sat in the Black section of the segregated stands and engaged in conversation with a couple of fans. According to Veeck’s book, the local law enforcement told Veeck he could not sit in that section, and then called the Ocala mayor when Veeck argued back. The mayor finally backed down when Veeck threatened to take his team elsewhere for spring training and promised to let the country know why. Veeck sold the Brewers in 1945 and retired to his ranch in Tucson, Arizona, but soon purchased the Cleveland Indians in 1946. He decided to buck tradition and train the Indians in Tucson and convinced the New York Giants to give Phoenix a try. Thus the Cactus League was born. Veeck then signed Larry Doby to the Indians. Doby was the second African-American to play MLB in the 20th century, and the first for the American League. Housing Market How can I purchase a new home when my name is still on the mortgage to the marital home after my divorce?
One of the main concerns when one party is retaining the marital home is that the departing spouse will not be able to qualify for future mortgage financing while their name remains on the current mortgage. While many investors have their own guidelines or ‘overlays’ to Fannie Mae underwriting guidelines, a divorce mortgage professional will know how to handle CourtOrdered Assignment of Debt. When a borrower has outstanding debt that was assigned to another party by court order (such as under a divorce decree or separation agreement) and the creditor does not release the borrower from liability, the borrower has a contingent
liability. The lender is not required to count this contingent liability as part of the borrower’s recurring monthly debt obligations. The key; however, is to work with a knowledgeable and trained divorce lending professional. A Certified Divorce Lending Professional (CDLP) understands the different requirements of working with contingent liabilities. There can be hidden issues with title requirements as well as payments made by the spouse is now liable – hidden issues that can result in denied mortgage financing. How To Raise A Reader They say that reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body. Reading strengthens children’s analytical thinking skills, improves their memories and expands their vocabulary. Reading is also an excellent way to reduce stress. Below are some tips on how to raise a reader as we celebrate National Reading Month in March:
1. Establish a story time. Make time every day to snuggle with your child and read to him. He will remember the time you spent together even if he forgets the stories. 2. Share your faves. Pick some childhood favorites and read them to your child to see if any of them click. After all, books like Green Eggs and Ham and Curious George are classics for a reason. 3. Explore an author’s works. Ask your local librarian or research on the Internet to find additional titles by an author you enjoy.
4. Let one passion inspire another. Find books that speak to your child’s interests. Does she like animals? Check out the Berenstain Bears series. Is your little one into trucks? Get some books about construction. Got a baseball fan? Well, you get the idea. 5. Lead by example. Encourage your child to be a reader by showing him that you love to read. Planning trips to the library, going to a bookstore and designating a special story time will show him that you make reading a priority. 6. Let the books come to you! The Buckeye Library Bookmobile stops in front of Basha’s on Main Street in Verrado with a great selection of books for all ages. This is a fun and unique way to let your child pick out their own books with the convenience of being in the community. View the calendar at www.buckeyeaz.gov/residents/library for dates and times. Money Matters If you’re a gardener, your busy season is at hand, but could the skills you deploy at gardening be transferred to other areas of your life – such as investing? Here are a few ideas for doing just that: Establish a timeline. As a gardener, you typically follow a well-defined timeline. You need to set up a schedule for watering, feeding and weeding. As an investor, you may also need to observe a timeline. During the early and middle stages of your career, you probably need to invest primarily for growth, so you can build resources for a comfortable retirement. Then, as you near retirement, you may want to lower your risk level by shifting some of your investment dollars from growth-oriented vehicles into more incomeproducing ones. And once you do retire, your focus will shift to preserving your money. Choose “healthy” investments. Gardeners like to choose plants they know will really last. And when you invest, you, too, should look for signs of health in the investments you choose. For
example, when picking stocks, look for companies with solid fundamentals, such as experienced management, strong earnings and the demonstrated ability to produce products and services. Or, when considering bonds, consider those that independent rating agencies have awarded the highest grades. Feed your investments properly. The most important element in plant nutrition is water. When you invest, you also need to know the right amount of “food,” or “nutrients,” to apply. If you don’t put enough money into investments, they may not grow as much as you’d like. On the other hand, it is possible to “overwater” certain investments. For example, if you constantly put money into just one or two investments, they could end up crowding out others in your portfolio, causing you to lose the value of diversification.Ultimately, seek a balance in how you distribute your investment dollars. Year after year, successful gardeners reap the rewards of their labors. And following some of their habits can help you work toward a longlasting and fruitful investment garden, too. Submitted by Wayne Polk, of Edward Jones Investments, Verrado resident

How to Make Life Fair My grandmother was always about fairness. When people would say, “That’s not fair” or “life’s not fair,” she would look at us, smile and wink. Mom, as we called her, saw life differently. She would always say, “The more a person tries, the fairer life becomes. You can go through life complaining about things or you can do something about it. Choose to do something.”
One of her favorite sayings was, “Be fair to yourself.” When I didn’t understand math homework, I became frustrated, threw my pencil down and quit. Mom would say, “Be fair to yourself. When you don’t understand something…ask a question.” I asked and became very good at math. When I couldn’t make a basket because the basketball hoop was too high, Mom would say, “Be fair to yourself; give yourself a chance to become good.” I became good and in sixth grade I played on the eighth-

Mom would say, “Be fair to yourself, give yourself a chance to improve.” However, I continued to strike out and never really improved. It wasn’t until many years later that I realized how my grandmother’s words of fairness impacted me.
