From Me To You... I had a most wonderful experience recently. It was the occasion of my baby’s 17th birthday, and trying to find a way to celebrate that he would enjoy (and his friends would be able to participate in) during social distancing was quite a challenge. Obviously it had to be an online occasion and that actually had the advantage of opening it up to friends from near and far. I began my search. My son enjoys cooking so I thought that an online cooking class would be a fun thing to do so online I went. I have used AirBNB on the past for my travel arrangements and had much success with that company so I looked up their online experiences for a cooking class. After many days falling down that rabbit hole I eventually chose Pietro’s Pasta Making Class. Pietro is an Italian living in Milan who has been running this online class for many month now, quite successfully if you read his reviews. I found the most complicated part of the booking experience was figuring out a time that worked for both us and Pietro. As he is in Milan he is 8 hours ahead of us and incidently he has very young twins which complicated our schedule too. Eventually a date and time were set and invitations were sent out. The day arrived and I was really anxious. What if it all went horribly wrong? I really wanted my son to have a great time, he has had a heck of
a year and I felt that I owed him a fun birthday. I should not have worried. Pietro was a consummate professional who managed to teach the teenagers how to make pasta from scratch, introduce them to Italy and it’s beauty, and keep them all entertained at the same time. Ross not only learned how to make a wonderful meal, he was able to share the experience with friends in Ohio, Flagstaff, Phoenix and Goodyear. I will add that the pasta was delicious and so easy! If you look further in the magazine you will find the recipe so you can make some yourself. I can also tell you that I have been bitten by the online class bug. We have a wine tasting event scheduled for later in February with adult friends, and I am going to set up a monthly date night. I am thinking of dance classes, how much fun would it be to learn Salsa without the embarrassment of being in a classroom making a fool of yourself? There are so many fun classes to choose from, GINspiration History and Cocktails, Follow a Plague Doctor Through Prague, Family Magic Show and Magic Lesson, Meet and Draw a Llama, and that is just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many ways to learn and have fun that were not available to us before we were hit with this virus. Why not take advantage of a few and have some fun with your Valentine this year?

The Bug Guy
therefore, it is unusual to find them inside your home. So, be on the lookout in and around your patio, driveways, and sidewalks for soil ant activity.
In todays charged environment, its important to remember that we are all neighbors and friends. With that in mind let’s put one foot in front of the other and move forward into 2021 together. If we all work together, there is no task that is unsurmountable. In partnership we can make everyone’s life better! Just like ants in a colony working together, we too can accomplish anything we set our mind to. As we continue to move into 2021, a La Nina year, we saw a little rain in January, but not nearly enough. February continues to bring us a warmer and drier weather pattern. Without a cold wet winter, we can expect to see a rapid resurgence of insect activity, including crickets, scorpions, and spiders earlier in the season. Termites are steadily increasing in activity levels, too. More specifically, soil ants have been more active, this winter. The most likely areas to find them are in the gaps between pavers, and near irrigated plants. Soil ant is a generic name applied to ants found outside. Soil ants are also classed as occasional home invaders;
Crickets are more active during this time of year. With cooler weather and a little bit of rain, I expect the cricket population to explode beginning in February and thru May. This influx will impact our scorpion population as they are their primary food source this time of year. So, it is best to keep and eye out for a general increase in insect activity and address the problem early so that you can minimize the food source for and reduce scorpion activity in & around your home. Many of you have noticed that subterranean termite activity is on the rise. With the rain we received in January this activity will only accelerate. Keep an eye on your exterior foundation wall for termite shelter tubes. La Nina provides us the moderate winters that we enjoy, it is also good for the insect population overall. So, be on the lookout for increases in insect activity and be safe. Submitted by Larry Cash, of Estrella Mountain Pest and Termite Control

The Exit Plan
You and your family need to develop some strategies and skills to help your children when they encounter situations when facing a decision about alcohol and drugs with their peers. An essential part of the strategies and skills is to develop an “Exit Plan,” which will help your child know what they would do if the situation arose. Even if you do not think your child wants to drink or try drugs, peer pressure is a powerful thing. I remember back in junior high my first time being offered marijuana at a friend’s house party. I said no, but then felt so embarrassed because everyone made fun of me after that. I lost many friends after that party, and as a teen, that is a horrible feeling because you want to be accepted. Looking back as an adult, I know now, they were not real friends. I remember wanting to call my mom, but I could not call her to get me. I knew if she had come to get me, everyone
at that party would have got in trouble. I did not want to be seen calling my mom and be embarrassed more than I already was. Nowadays, with technology and an Exit Plan, a teen may be able to avoid that peer pressure. You can develop an Exit Plan with your family. (I wish when I was a teenager, I could have done this.) Your child can text a family member a code word, phrase, an emoji, or number to activate the Family Exit Plan. The family member receiving the text will call the child to start the secret rescue. If you would like to see an example of an implemented Exit Plan and learn more about developing one for your family, go to our blog and read the rest of our article. Your family’s safety is so vital, and this will help you build your child’s strategies and skills to avoid alcohol and drug use by developing The Exit Plan with them. Peitro’s Pasta Ingredients 2 large eggs 1 cup all purpose flour
Directions • Pour the cup of flour onto a clean work surface and make a well in the middle. • Crack both eggs into the middle of the flour and using a fork lightly whisk the eggs making sure not to break the flour walls. • Gradually incorporate the flour walls into the egg by scraping small amounts into the center and whisking together. • Once the pasta has combined into a ball put the fork aside and start kneading. Don’t worry if not all the flour was used to get to this stage. If your pasta is sticky then add more flour! • Knead until dough bounces back after pressing your fingers into it.
• Cover the dough and let it rest for 20 mins. • Liberally dust your surface and pasta with flour and roll it until it is thin enough to see through. Keep adding flour to prevent sticking. Traditionally pasta is ready when you can read a newspaper through it! • Cut your pasta into desired shape, we tried squares then pinched the center to create bow ties, and cut into thin strips to create fettuccine ribbons. What ever you do, have fun
with it! • Cook in boiling salted water for 1-2 minutes • Serve with your favorite sauce or go for a simple butter and Parmesan topping. • Enjoy!

Yes! The owner(s) may add other family members or place the home in a trust, so family automatically has ownership in the property and equity as well.
Will my family be responsible for the debt?
If I take out a reverse mortgage, does that mean I will leave nothing to my family?

NO! Reverse mortgages have insurance automatically built in to protect the family. Most homes continue to increase in value over time leaving even more equity for family. Even if the property value should decrease below what is owed, the family can acquire the property for 5 percent less than market value regardless of how much is owed or how low the value may be.

Positive Alternatives to “No” Children should begin to learn to respect limits from a young age. Most boundaries for children are for health and safety reasons and are a very important and necessary developmental tool. Children are corrected every day, which can lead them to simply “tune out” any perceived negativity or become uncooperative. Regardless of their age, most people respond better to positive communication. This is especially true for children. Try telling your child what they can do instead of what they can’t. Practice the positive alternatives below to avoid overusing the word “no” while maintaining reasonable limits. • “Maybe later” can work to delay a request such as snacks or sweets before mealtime. • “Not today” communicates that the timing is wrong but leaves the possibility open. • “When we’ve done (this), then we can do
(that).” This method is good for transition times and to help toddlers establish event routines. For example, “When all of your toys are put away, we can go play at the park.” • “I’ll think about it” replaces an automatic “no” by allowing yourself the time to think about your determination. Parents tend to make better decisions when they take the time to think about the request and their response. • “Sure, did you bring your allowance?” This technique allows you to communicate that they may have the requested item if they can pay for it themselves. • “Yes (with qualifier).” This strategy grants conditional permission. For example, “Yes, you may play the game after we eat dinner.” Submitted by Nicole Bigham, On-site Owner, The Goddard School in Buckeye-Verrado

Sleep Apnea
If you’re not coping with the symptoms of sleep apnea yourself, you likely know someone who is. The condition caused by interrupted breathing during sleep has become rampant in the past couple of decades. Despite that prevalence 80% of moderate and severe obstructive sleep apnea cases in the U.S. go undiagnosed. One reason for this is that common myths around sleep apnea create confusion and keep many people from fully understanding the condition. To help better inform people who could unknowingly be suffering from obstructive sleep apnea, here’s a roundup of the five most common misconceptions out there. Myth No. 1: Sleep apnea is basically harmless. Not true. Complications of sleep apnea can include high blood pressure, heart problems, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome or liver
problems. Daytime fatigue can also contribute to irritability, difficulty concentrating or depression, and put you at greater risk of motor vehicle and workplace accidents. Myth No. 2: CPAP machines are bulky, cumbersome and a hassle to use. While CPAP machines may have been bulky in the past, newer models are significantly lighter and easier to transport. Myth No. 3: Only obese people get sleep apnea. While more than half of people with sleep apnea are categorized as either overweight or obese, the causes of the sleep disorder are complex and are not boiled down to just one factor. In fact, lean, physically fit people can also develop the condition. Myth No. 4: If you don’t snore, you don’t have sleep apnea. Up to 20% of patients who have sleep apnea don’t snore. Myth No. 5: Only older people suffer from sleep apnea. Not so. While the disorder is more common after age 40, it can affect people of all ages - even children. Sleep apnea can also run in families, making some genetically pre-disposed to it. Sleep apnea can be a serious condition but understanding its symptoms and keeping up on the best treatments available are the first steps toward managing it effectively.

Kindergarten Prep The start of the new year may seem early to start thinking about the first day of school, but for families with children entering kindergarten next school year, it’s not too soon to get ready. In fact, many schools hold their kindergarten registration events beginning this month.
The first step is for parents to contact their local school for kindergarten registration information. Then, at home, there are things families can do to help their child be successful on the first day of kindergarten. First Things First (FTF), has resources to help parents and caregivers online on the FTF Kindergarten Readiness page, found at https://www.firstthingsfirst.org/resources/ kindergarten-readiness/. Below are some tips from FTF to help ease your preschooler’s transition to kindergarten:

· Read with your child at least 20 minutes per day. This can be done by having short reading sessions throughout the day to add up to 20 minutes total, which can help with shorter attention spans. · Talk with your child everywhere – at home, in the car, at the store. Have real conversations with your preschooler. Make up stories or songs about your outings. · Writing begins with scribbling. Give your child safe writing tools to play with, like crayons, chalk or markers and blank paper. Also, writing requires fine motor strength. Your child can build hand strength by playing with play dough. · Teach your child how to use the bathroom by themselves, to wash their hands after going to the bathroom and before eating, to blow their nose and sneeze into their elbow. · Since preschoolers may be in places where cloth face coverings are required, help them get used to wearing them. The American Academy of Pediatrics offers reassurance that mask wearing becomes routine when reinforced. Even if you don’t have kindergarteners this year, it’s never too early to start helping kids prepare. Brett Benninghoff, Southwest Maricopa Community Outreach Coordinator

Furry Friends It’s February, the month of love, and as pet parents we know the special bond between us and our chosen pet companions. Whether it is a dog, cat, bird or even a fish, any pet owner will tell you they know in their hearts that their pet loves them unconditionally.
The strength of those bonds can make it difficult to open our hearts after the loss of a pet. I know this only too well, having just lost our Brittany, Ellie, after 14 years; in fact, I proclaimed to all who would listen that the next dog would have to find us. Serendipitously, just weeks after we lost Ellie, I connected with Community Paws, the rescue group in Verrado, who happened to have taken in a young female dog that had been abandoned with her seven puppies. The good
people at Community Paws had nursed her back to health by the time we decided to meet Mercedes. Hesitant at first, we began with a few walks that graduated to playdates, but I have to admit: it was love at first sight. Sarah had told us Mercedes was special and she was right. It wasn’t long before Mercedes (Sadi) became a permanent member of our family, bringing joy back into our broken hearts. Why not take a chance on falling in love during this month of love and consider adopting a dog or cat from Community Paws? Not ready? Consider fostering on a short-term basis instead. You can find available pets on the Adoption page at CommunityPaws.org, as well as uplifting stories of adoptions on our social media pages. Upcoming events: • Rattlesnake Avoidance Training for Dogs at Crescent Park on Sat., Feb. 27. Learn more and register at CommunityPaws.org. • Notice: Junior Division’s monthly meetings have been postponed until further notice. Money Matters During the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us have been forced to work from home. But once we’ve moved past the virus, many workers may continue working from home. If you’re one of those who will continue working remotely, either full time or at least a few days a week, how might you benefit? Here are a few possibilities: • Reduced transportation costs – Over time, you can spend a lot of money commuting to and from work. The average commuter spends $2,000 to $5,000 per year on transportation costs. If you are going to work primarily from home, you should be able to greatly reduce these costs. • Potentially lower car insurance premiums – Your auto insurance premiums are partially based on how many miles you drive each year. So, if you were to significantly reduce these miles by working from home, you might qualify for lower rates.
• Lower expenditures on lunches – If you typically eat lunch in restaurants or get takeout while at work, you could reduce this bill by eating lunch at home during your remote workday. • Lower clothing costs – Despite the rise in “casual dress” days, plenty of workers still need to maintain appropriate office attire. By working from home, you can “dress down,” reducing your clothing costs and dry-cleaning bills. As you can see, it may be possible for you to save quite a bit of money by working from home. For one thing, you could boost your investments. Let’s suppose that you can save $2,500 each year by working remotely. If you were to invest this amount in a tax-deferred account, such as an IRA or your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored plan and earned a hypothetical 6% annual return for 20 years, you’d accumulate more than $97,000 – and if you kept going for an additional 10 years, you’d have nearly $210,000. You also might use part of your savings generated by remote work to help build an emergency fund containing a few months’ worth of living expenses. Without this fund, you might be forced to dip into your retirement accounts to pay for something like a major home repair. Becoming an at-home worker will no doubt require some adjustments on your part – but, in strictly financial terms, it could lead to some positive results.
