From Me To You... I have a very unusual dog. On the surface he looks like many other large mixed breed dogs, fuzzy and floppy with an adorable face. But he is not like other dogs.
To start with we chose this breed because one of our children has allergies. The side benefit of this is a dog that rarely sheds. Except for Hank. He sheds, boy does he shed. Five minutes after vacuuming the house there are blonde tumbleweeds rolling across the kitchen floor. He also has allergies. Any cats make him sneeze convulsively. Aerosol sprays do that too. His nose runs all the time. I am often found in front of the dog, tissue in hand yelling “Blow Hank!” Doesn’t help. His allergies also give him red ‘hot spots’ on his belly. So we give him allergy pills that seem to help - and cost a small fortune. He is a sweet boy, however he has issues on top of the allergies. I think he has FOMO - fear of missing out. He has to be the first up the stairs and into rooms, like he is worried he will miss something if he doesn’t see it before us. I quite often fake him out and send him crashing up the stairs while I wander quietly into the kitchen. Hank has two speeds; relaxed, calm companion and hyper, neurotic dervish. We have a retired service animal in the family and we often joke that Hank could do with his own Emotional Support dog. My sister met him for the first time and commented that he was ‘Rather Special’ and I will admit that he is at his best when Mickey (the aforementioned service dog) is by his side.
underwater he is fine yelling from the side. Once a head goes underwater he turns into Hank the Lifesaving Lifeguard. He catapults himself into the water - still barking which is comical because he ends up swallowing so much water he starts to choke. Not deterred by the water rushing into his mouth he bravely paddles over to the person in need of rescue and proceeds to try and grab them with his paws. This results in scratches and yelling and everyone leaving the pool. All kidding aside, Hank is my loyal companion, lying by my feet as I work and loving us all fiercely, and I wouldn’t trade him for any other dog in the world.
Catherine Uretsky Editor, Main Street magazine info@estrellapublishing.com 623-594-928
In our On Our Cover article we wrote that Niki is a former nurse & army veteran but she is a current nurse & former army veteran. We apologize for the error.
One of his more ‘endearing characteristics’ is his love for his family. Unfortunately this means we can never use the pool until Hank is safely tucked away out of sight and earshot. You see he firmly believes that we can’t swim. He can swim and is very good at it but when we get in the pool Hank’s protective instincts go into overdrive. He barks like a lunatic from the edge, seeming to say “Get out! Get out! Get out!” As long as no-one goes Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

On Our Cover As the summer monsoons rolled into the valley and the temperatures reached their pinnacle, the Vipers Youth Tackle Football Team hit the grid iron to prepare for the 2018 Tackle Football Season. A grueling eight weeks of preseason camp would hurl the Vipers to a perfect 9-0 season and the 2018 NYS Tackle Football Championship, but their journey began long before that.
The Vipers journey started three seasons prior with a simple concept, to prepare local Verrado youth athletes for the next level. Hard work, accountability and fundamental football skills would be the base for training young boys how to compete and win on the football field. The path to victory would not be without its hurdles and adversities as the Vipers only managed to win one game in the inaugural season and two in their second season. Adversity brought new challenges but none that would not be overcome with persistence and dedication.
real test of the team’s character as they faced a 22-0 deficit in the first half. Faced once more with adversity, the team rallied to a 34-22 victory over the Huskies with a great display of the Vipers fortitude. The next three games the Vipers outscored their opponents 126-8 ending the regular season undefeated and facing the Huskies in the first round of the playoffs. The team beat the Huskies in a double overtime 20-14 victory earning their spot in the championship game once again. Confronted with a very formidable opponent in the championship game, the Vipers once again showed their resilience and the overwhelming desire to win at all cost by winning 22-14, in overtime, to become the 2018 NYS Tackle Football Champions. Submitted by Jeanne Montgomery, Verrado resident
With a dedicated staff of remarkable coaches, a core group of players from the first two seasons and an extremely talented “recruiting class”, the Vipers entered their third season with high hopes. A meshing football team navigated through the regular season unscathed and earn a trip to the championship losing 12-0 and finishing the season 7-1. The very same hot August night, three seasons later, a seasoned Vipers football team took to the grid iron to prepare for battle in the 2018 season. Adapting a revamped offense and defense, twenty-seven young men went to work, yearning for victory. With a 43-0 victory in game one, the Vipers marched through the first three games outscoring opponents 130-0. Game four would be the first 6 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

Cookies!
Experienced bakers know how to achieve perfect cookies every time. But don’t worry! There’s no need to buy high-priced equipment or enroll in culinary school. Here are a few simple tips for delectable cookies. * Invest in a food scale. This is important when measuring flour, which settles and varies in density if scooped. * Chill the dough. After mixing ingredients, chilling cookie dough prevents cookies from overspreading while baking. * Use parchment paper. Parchment paper on cookie sheets does wonders for preventing overdone cookie bottoms. * Hone your decorating strategy. Use a variety of cookie cutters to achieve perfect shapes. Cool cookies before applying toppings so they won’t melt or run. * Use high-quality ingredients. Make sure your flour and raising agents haven’t sat in your
cupboard too long, losing their effectiveness. Here is a classic recipe to delight your family and guests. Deluxe Sugar Cookies: 1 cup butter or margarine, softened 1 cup sugar 1 egg, beaten 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract 1/2 teaspoon Pure Almond Extract 2 tablespoons milk 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder Frosting: 4 cups powdered sugar 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened 3 to 4 tablespoons milk 1 to 2 teaspoons Orange, Lemon or Peppermint Extract, to taste Assorted Food Coloring Cookies: Combine butter, sugar, egg, extracts and milk in large bowl. Stir in flour and baking powder; mix well. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm. Heat oven to 400 F. On lightly floured surface, roll dough one third at a time to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut with floured cookie cutter. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 6 to 9 minutes or until edges are light brown. Immediately remove to cool on wire rack. Frosting: Combine all ingredients; beat until smooth.

Home Sweet Home
Are you planning on buying or selling a home in 2019? Do you understand the importance of having the services of a professional licensed realtor working on your behalf?
Buying a home? Perhaps it is time to downsize, buy a larger home for your growing family, a second home or maybe it is time to retire to sunny arizona for our fantastic weather. Whatever the reason, be certain to have your realtor with you, from the start to the finish, when your realtor hands you the keys to your newly purchased home. Realtors are important partners when you’re buying a home. They will provide you with helpful information on homes and neighborhoods that isn’t easily accessible to the public. A realtor’s knowledge of the home buying process, negotiating skills and familiarity with the area you want to live in, is extremely valuable.
Buyers should feel comfortable, knowing their realtor always has their best interest in mind. Buyers should always view homes exclusively with their agent, including new home models as the sales agents at the models work for the builder only. When your agent registers you on your first visit to a model home, you ensure you will be represented throughout the entire process by your realtor, who works to negotiate the best terms and price for you. And the good news is, there is no cost to you to be represented by a realtor as a buyer. Selling your home? Whatever your reasons to sell, now is a good time, as interest rates are continuing to climb. If you choose to list your home take the time to get your home ready to sell so that it shows pride of ownership. Take the necessary steps to fix the things you have been putting off, clean, declutter, spruce up the yard and paint if required. If your home shows well and is accurately priced it will help get it sold quickly and for a better price. Your realtor can advise you on ways to improve the salability of your home, provide a comparative market analysis to determine market value, maximize exposure of your home by having tours, open houses, network exposure, flyers, signage and advertising to attract a high volume of interest to get your property sold. Don’t make a move without your realtor Submitted by Bette Popiel, Realtor - Verrado Realty, Verrado resident

Online Learning Today’s college students are just as likely to be moms and dads themselves, full-time and parttime employees or members of the U.S. armed forces. Needing flexibility and variety in course offerings, more students are turning to online learning to design a path that fits their lifestyle.
As a result, online learning is seeing significant growth. A recent study found more than 6 million students take online courses across the U.S., and that number continues to rise. The following are some things you might not know about online learning: 1. Each learner is unique “We work diligently to lay the right groundwork for each student at a personal and individual level because we know there is no silver bullet to student success,” said Leah Lommel, chief operating officer of ASU Online. “Each learner is unique - what works for one may not work for another. This reality requires a tireless commitment to innovation on the part of higher education.”
2. Higher education leads to career success Access to higher education remains the best pathway to career success, directly impacting employment opportunities and wages. The Center on Education and the Workforce found that bachelor’s degree holders earn 31 percent more than workers with an associate’s degree and 74 percent more than those with a high school diploma. Further, emerging technologies and the changing nature of industries have created a demand for new types of skilled workers. 3. Flexibility is key Higher ed programs need to be flexible and adaptable, allowing students to study during the hours - or minutes - that fit their schedules. With online programs, students can gain practical knowledge throughout their program that can be immediately applied on the job, making them even more valuable in their current roles. As online programs continue to expand, students are more closely able to map coursework to their desired field of work. Interested in learning more? Travellers With Disabilities Traveling can come with lots of hassles. Booking a flight, traversing through a packed airport and getting to the gate on time are just a few things that can cause stress. Then there’s using those tiny on-board bathrooms, and hoping you get your luggage back in one piece. Travel is difficult for the average person, but now imagine doing all this in a wheelchair. “Problems for travelers with disabilities are extremely common,” says Shaun Castle, a service-disabled U.S. Army veteran and deputy executive director of Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA). “By far, the number one complaint that we receive from our members about any issue, is about the problems with air travel.”
Castle and tens of thousands of travelers with disabilities with the signing of the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act of 2018. The passage of H.R. 302 provides a “bill of rights” and an advisory panel for passengers with disabilities, as well as revised training and procedures for TSA screenings for people with disabilities. Write it down. The group recommends attaching written instructions for folding and stowing directly to wheelchairs and scooters. Many airlines have forms online for passengers to complete. Plan ahead. Call the airline a week in advance of the flight to confirm special arrangements and call the TSA Cares helpline 72 hours in advance (855-787-2227) for assistance with security.
Castle has experienced the difficulties firsthand. He has had his wheelchair bent, cracked and even lost in separate incidents. “These are more than minor inconveniences,” Castle says. “If my wheelchair is damaged, it may mean I am stranded until I can get it repaired.” But things could be getting better soon for
“This new bill recognizing the rights of travelers with disabilities is a huge move forward, but there’s more work to do,” says Castle. “Paralyzed Veterans of America will continue to work toward accessibility for all Americans with disabilities.” Check pva.org/travel for more tips, resources and to share your travel story.

#VeryVerrado There are farmers markets all over the world. In our country alone, the number of markets has risen significantly over the past few decades. The main attraction is the Verrado Community Farmers Market on Sundays from November to April. First, what exactly is a farmers market? The USDA defines it as: “a multi-stall market at which farmer-producers sell agricultural products directly to the general public at a central or fixed location, particularly fresh fruits and vegetables (but also meat products, dairy products, and/ or grains).” In addition to produce, meat, etc., vendors can also sell prepared foods, plants, flowers, baked goods, and even craft items. Generally, there is a requirement that all products sold must be local. Of course, the term “local” is subject to interpretation. Food is undoubtedly the most important commodity sold at a farmers market. The idea behind farmers markets is that the middleman – the grocery store – is cut out of the equation. You’re buying fresh produce straight from the growers themselves. The first farmers market in the United States opened in 1634 in Boston, Massachusetts. Many markets began following: Hartford in 1643,
New York City by 1686, and Philadelphia in 1693, to name a few.
During the 1700s, 1800s, and the first half or so of the 1900s, grocery stores gained in popularity; consequently, interest in farmers markets fell. During the late 1970s, a peach harvest surplus inspired lawmakers to allow farmers markets in California. Prior to that time, state regulators outlawed the sale of produce outside of commercial markets. The laws regarding the packaging and selling of produce were very strict. In 1977, there were so many peaches that farmers were unable to sell, they dumped their excess on the state capitol lawn. Jerry Brown, governor of California at the time, allowed an exemption for farmers to sell produce at farmers markets. This shift in food laws yielded to the creation of markets such as the Gardena Farmers Market, one of the first farmers markets in Southern California. The appeal of farmers markets took another great leap between 1994 and 2008, when the number of operating markets rose 300% during that 14 year time frame. Farmers markets have only continued to expand in numbers over the years. The biggest farmers market in the world is in Tokyo, and boasts over 1,700 stalls. Check out www. arizonacommunityfarmersmarkets.com for other great farmers markets in your area. Submitted by Allen Turner of Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation

The Bug Guy
Fear of spiders is consistently ranked as one of the top phobias in America. Whether it is an evolutionary trigger that kept our ancestors alive or the result of Hollywood horror films, spiders have a reputation as being creepy, crawly, venomous pests. But spiders aren’t all bad. They do provide a form of natural pest control by catching insects in their webs. However, that doesn’t mean they have an open invitation to come into our homes. A spider infestation can cause contamination of food in kitchens or pantries, and depending on the species, there could be health risks if family members unexpectedly happen upon a web or lurking spider. Taking action to prevent spiders goes a long way in avoiding these risks.
delivered when you’re not at home, and groceries might be placed on the driveway while unloading. These are opportunities for spiders and other pests to crawl onto bags and boxes and be carried inside. Inspecting packages before bringing them into your home reduces this risk. If you have an infestation in your home, contact a licensed pest professional. Being proactive about spider control will reduce the likelihood of any species making a home in your abode and possibly harming a member of your family. But if you suspect you have a spider infestation in your home, contact a pest professional to identify the species and properly remove the pests. Submitted by Larry Cash, of Estrella Mountain Pest Control
• Keep garages, attics and basements clean and clutter-free. Most spiders seek out secluded, undisturbed areas where they can build a web to catch their next meal, so an attic or basement that has been left unused over the past season could be harboring these pests out of sight. Avoid leaving clothing and shoes on the floor and consider storing them inside plastic containers. It is also advised to shake out all clothing that has been in a hamper before wearing or washing. • Seal any cracks or crevices around the home. Spiders can crawl into homes through damaged window screens or cracks in the siding. The outside of homes should be inspected for these defects seasonally as weather and changes in temperature can cause or worsen existing problems. • Inspect items such as boxes of decorations and grocery bags before bringing them indoors. Housing Market Managing your Mortgage? For everything money related there is a manager – your 401K, SEP, IRA, ROTH IRA, etc. Any more acronyms? Throw them in there. To be honest including things that have nothing to do with money get managed. The question is: Who is managing your mortgage? Is there such a thing? Well I’m here to tell you that there is! Let’s dive into it. I often get calls on people wanting to refinance, sell, and buy. I can be like any other loan officer and just take the application and move on. Or I can be an advisor to my clients. So, what this like? For starters, an advisor will ask things like, why now? What’s the purpose? And What’s the goal? Second, the advisor would give options and comparisons. Third, would make sure that you are on your way to accomplish those goals. With my clients, I always look to keep up with
current goals. Some examples are: dropping mortgage insurance, keeping up with mortgage rates to make sure that they don’t have a better chance to lower payments, and checking on home values to refinance and/or drop mortgage insurance. Another example might be keeping up with time frames needed to season certain events; much like foreclosures, short sales, and bankruptcies. The question is, who is managing your Mortgage? Are you on the path for your goal? It’s always a good idea to check and every situation is different. If you don’t have anyone managing your mortgage let’s talk soon. Choosing a Summer Program According to research conducted by the National Center for Summer Learning, which is based at the Johns Hopkins School of Education in Baltimore, Maryland, summer learning loss accounts for about two-thirds of the difference in the likelihood of a student pursuing a college preparatory path in high school. As these findings indicate, keeping children’s brains challenged throughout the summer is crucial, since the lack of learning that occurs during these months has both shortterm and long-term consequences.
Tips for Choosing a Summer Program: Choose a program that is based on each child’s interests and natural curiosity – this allows children the opportunity to direct their own learning. Ask for credentials, experience and training of the teachers/counselors. Check the health and safety practices of the program. Make sure you are comfortable that the program will be able to handle your child’s unique needs. Inquire about the daily schedule of the program. Does the program combine songs, stories, exploration, art, physical activities and learning adventures in a safe, nurturing environment? Ask how much freedom a child has to choose activities. Ask for references. Submitted by Nicole Bingham, of The Goddard School

Keeping a child’s day consistent throughout the summer months keeps the brain focused and helps prevent learning losses during the summer. In addition, this can potentially ease the anxiety that often accompanies transitioning into a new classroom or school come fall.Research has
shown that programs that have specific learning goals, use learning and developmental standards and are age-appropriate are ideal in preventing summer learning losses.

Money Matters If you’re in your twenties or thirties, you might be starting to focus more on investing to reach your financial goals. Because of this, you also may be more attuned to moves in the financial markets. Depending on your age, you may have only experienced the bull market of the past nine years, so you might not know what to expect – or how to respond – whenever the next bear market strikes. Of course, just recently, you’ve witnessed a market correction – a drop of at least 10 percent in the major stock market indices, such as the S&P 500. This sudden plunge made big news and reminded many investors of how volatile the financial markets can be. But a full-fledged bear market usually isn’t identified until the markets are down 20 percent from their recent highs. Plus, bear markets, unlike corrections, tend to linger for a while. The last “bear” emerged from hibernation in October 2007 and stayed on the prowl until early March 2009. During that time, the S&P 500 declined by about 50 percent. This long run-up
may have obliterated your bear market memories, if you ever had them at all. And that’s why you might want to familiarize yourself with some of the bare facts about bear markets:
Bear markets may provide good buying opportunities. When stock prices are down, your investment dollars will buy more shares. In short, a bear market may provide you with a chance to buy quality investments at good prices. Bear markets don’t last forever. No one can predict precisely how long bear markets will run, but they’ve typically been much shorter than bull markets. So, while you might not particularly like looking at your investment statement during a decline, you can take some comfort in knowing such downturns are a normal feature of the investment landscape. A bear market can be challenging. But by making the right moves, such as staying patient, looking for buying opportunities and maintaining a diversified portfolio, you may be able to prevent a market decline from becoming unbearable. Now Trending Here is a trend to “be in the know” about especially if you are a parent, grandparent or someone who has an invested interest in kids. It’s the trend of teen vaping. It has become an epidemic in the US and teens are being marketed with the flavors and devices called Electronic Nicotine Devices. The electronic cigarettes or e-cigs are battery-operated devices that turn nicotine or other chemicals into a vapor that is inhaled by the user. Devices look like pens, USB drives, phone chargers, etc. They are a big hit with teens with thousands of fun flavors like cotton candy, vanilla, gummi bear, creme brulee, strawberry and one of the most popular flavors; “mango.” Many teens do not believe e-cigs contain nicotine. When asked what is in their e-cig, 66% thought just flavoring. One very popular device is
called a Juul (pronounced jewel). 63% of Juul users don’t know the product always contains nicotine. Another startling fact is that 30% of teen e-cig users start smoking cigarettes within 6 months. How do they obtain e-cigs? Actually, it is quite simple: Visa gift cards and an Amazon account = purchase. You can get a Juul starter kit for under $40. Let’s up the game here. I can also use these devices to vape marijuana oil concentrate with little to no marijuana scent and no smoke. As the name suggests, they produce a vapor that quickly dissipates. Yes, I can get high in the next room or just outside the door and you will never know. The THC content (the active ingredient that causes the high) in the 1960-1970s was about 2-3% THC. Today the oil or concentrate can be anywhere from 70-90% pure THC. Want to be in the know and find out more about this and other teen drug trends? You are invited to “be in the know” and join the Way Out West Coalition at the Center on Main, Thursday evening, March 21, from 6pm– 7pm. The evening includes a question and answer session. At the end of the session you will be able to say. “Yes, I have seen the hand!” So, join us and let’s Get in the Way together. Home Decor
You’re making plans for new routines, working a full-time job and taking care of your family. It’s a whirlwind but you wouldn’t have it any other way. Now you just have to find time to refresh your decor for the year ahead. With so much to do and so little time, you’re naturally looking for ways to update your home without too much effort. Opt for easier with the tips below. * Add a little color to your home. In the summer colorful flowers can make any room welcoming, but in the winter your options for foliage are ... limited. Don’t fret or forgo the opportunity to add some natural accents to your home. Evergreen sprigs added to vases can bring a flora component to any room and infuse a seasonal dash of color. Forsythia is an early blooming shrub that can provide a beautiful pop of yellow color. Place these in the same areas you would summer flowers and you’ll love the fresh effect they create.

* Photo-friendly options. Family photos are a mainstay in any home and this season is the perfect time to take your photo displays up a notch. Free-standing photo panels - available at CVS - provide a new and exciting way to showcase your favorite family moments. * Let there be light. Stringing lights around the outside of your home is an annual holiday tradition, but why not keep inside lights throughout winter? String lights through the main entertaining areas of your home using insulated holders, just be sure to check the wires for fraying before you do. This is a great way to add light during shorter winter days, and because so many lights run on batteries and can be equipped with timers, it’s easier than ever to conserve energy Optimizing your decorating with the tips above will keep your home looking fresh without a lot of effort, and that’s something that will bring you peace and joy this year and beyond.
