From Me To You... Welcome to 2024! We made it once more around the sun on our journey through time - a rollercoaster ride that we’re all strapped into, and Father Time is the mischievous carnival barker, egging us on with his relentless ticking. He’s the ultimate stand-up comedian, dropping punchlines in the form of birthdays, deadlines, and unexpected plot twists. The New Year, with its glittering ball drop and champagne toasts, is just Time’s way of saying, “Hey, buckle up for another lap around the sun!”
Now, let’s talk resolutions. The New Year’s resolutions are the punchlines we come up with to counter Time’s relentless jesting. We promise ourselves to hit the gym, eat more greens, and finally learn that elusive salsa dance. But let’s be honest, Father Time is sitting in the audience, snickering at our well-intentioned attempts to outwit him. “Oh, you think a gym membership is going to stop me?” he chuckles, adjusting his scythe. As the clock strikes midnight, it’s as if the universe is delivering its own punchline—
“Surprise! You made it to the next level!” We cheer, we hug, and we sing “Auld Lang Syne” with gusto, as if by sheer celebration, we can slow down Time’s relentless march. In this grand comedy of existence, the New Year is our chance to join the laughter, to embrace the absurdity of resolutions, and to revel in the unpredictable hilarity that time throws our way. It’s a reminder that we have the power to find joy in the journey, to laugh at life’s quirks, and to share a good-natured guffaw with the ultimate timekeeper himself. So, here’s to another year in the cosmic comedy club! May your New Year be filled with laughter, resilience in the face of cosmic jokes, and the wisdom to appreciate the punchlines that make this wild ride worthwhile. Cheers to Time’s standup act, and may we all be VIPs in this celestial comedy club of existence!

Adopt or Shop?
The decision to welcome a new pet into your life is a significant one, and the choice between adopting from a shelter and buying from a breeder comes with its own set of merits. Understanding the strengths of each option can help potential pet parents make an informed decision based on their preferences and values.
Adopting a pet from a shelter is a compassionate choice that can bring immeasurable joy to both the adopter and the adopted. Shelters provide a haven for animals in need, offering a second chance to those who may have faced neglect or abandonment. By choosing adoption, individuals not only give a loving home to a deserving pet but also contribute to the broader effort to address the issue of pet overpopulation and reduce the number of animals in shelters. On the other hand, purchasing a pet from a breeder can appeal to those seeking specific traits, appearances, or lineage. Reputable breeders follow responsible practices, ensuring the health and well-being of the animals they raise. This option may be suitable for individuals with particular preferences or those who require predictability in terms of size, temperament, and potential health issues associated with specific breeds. Financial considerations also play a role in the decision-making process. Adoption fees from shelters are typically more affordable and

The element of surprise versus predictability is another factor to consider. Shelter animals often have mixed breeds, resulting in unique combinations of characteristics that can bring unexpected joy and variety to a household. On the other hand, purchasing from a breeder allows for more predictability in terms of the pet’s appearance, temperament, and potential health issues. The choice between pet adoption and buying from a breeder is a personal one that depends on individual preferences, values, and circumstances. By carefully weighing the factors that matter most to them, potential pet parents can make a choice that aligns with their values and ensures a fulfilling and harmonious companionship.

Resolutions
The tradition of making New Year resolutions has a long and diverse history, rooted in various cultural and religious practices that span centuries. The concept of setting goals for selfimprovement and reflecting on personal growth as the year comes to a close is a common thread that weaves through different societies and time periods. One of the earliest recorded instances of New Year resolutions can be traced back to ancient Babylon, around 4,000 years ago. The Babylonians celebrated the New Year with an 11-day festival called Akitu, during which they made promises to the gods to repay debts and return borrowed objects. These promises were considered a way of starting the year with a clean slate and ensuring the favor of the gods. In ancient Rome, citizens would make promises to the god Janus, the deity of beginnings and transitions, at the start of the year. These resolutions were seen as a way to seek Janus’s blessings for the year ahead and to foster personal and moral development.
setting, emphasizing the importance of selfdiscipline and improvement. The secularization of New Year resolutions gained momentum in the 19th century, as people began to focus on personal development and secular goals rather than strictly religious ones. In the modern era, the tradition of making New Year resolutions has become a global phenomenon, with people from various cultures participating in the practice. While the resolutions themselves may vary, common themes include health and fitness, financial stability, personal relationships, and career advancement. The tradition has also been influenced by the rise of self-help literature and the wellness movement, which promote the idea of continuous self-improvement. Despite its long and varied history, the concept of New Year resolutions remains a powerful and enduring tradition. It reflects a universal human desire for growth, improvement, and the opportunity for a fresh start as a new year begins. Whether rooted in ancient religious practices or modern secular ideals, the tradition of making resolutions continues to be a meaningful and culturally rich way for individuals to set intentions and strive for a better future.
During medieval Christianity, the practice of making resolutions became intertwined with the concept of repentance. As the Feast of the Circumcision, a Christian holy day, fell on January 1st, believers would reflect on their sins and resolve to lead a more virtuous life in the coming year. This religious association with New Year resolutions persisted through the centuries. The tradition evolved further during the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe. Early Puritans in America embraced the idea of self-examination and resolution12

Family Security Amidst the many New Year’s Resolutions families set at the top of the year, creating household safety habits and ensuring preparation in an emergency should be at the top. This year check out these five important actions to help keep your family safe.
1. Create a home safety checklist The checklist should include checking smoke and CO detectors, including changing out batteries, locking windows, ensuring fire extinguishers are readily available in the kitchen and other shared spaces, and properly storing household chemicals like cleaning products. 2. Enroll in hands-free safety services Did you know only 28.7% of U.S. households have a landline? Without a landline, it can be difficult to contact emergency services, especially for young children. Alexa Emergency Assist allows anyone in the home to use their voice to call for help, giving more peace of mind with fast access to urgent response agents 24/7 365 days a year. When you say, “Alexa, call for help” you
will be connected to a dedicated, professionally trained agent who can request dispatch of police, fire, or ambulance.
3. Teach personal safety habits Emphasize the importance of staying aware of surroundings, exercising caution when speaking with strangers, and practicing basic self-defense techniques. Underscore the importance of paying attention to smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, and to never ignore them. 4. Develop a trusted network Cultivate relationships with neighbors, friends, extended family, and community members to build a strong mutual support network. A network of trusted individuals is an invaluable resource that can help provide assistance during times of need. 5. Create an emergency plan Sit down with your family to discuss evacuation routes, emergency contact numbers, and designated meeting points. Talk about each family member’s responsibilities during different types of emergencies. By preparing for unexpected moments, you’ll foster a sense of security and resilience.

Wine Tasting 101 Wine tasting is a sophisticated and enjoyable activity that allows enthusiasts to explore the diverse world of wines. Whether you are a seasoned connoisseur or a novice eager to learn, adhering to certain dos and don’ts can enhance your experience and help you appreciate the complexities of each sip.
Firstly, one should approach wine tasting with an open mind and a willingness to explore. Do take the time to observe the wine’s color, noting its intensity and clarity. Swirl the glass gently to release the aromas, allowing you to delve into the nuances of the bouquet. Take your time to savor the aroma before moving on to the tasting stage. This sensory journey contributes significantly to the overall enjoyment of the wine. Do cleanse your palate between tastings. Water and unsalted crackers are ideal for neutralizing your taste buds and preparing them for the next wine. This practice ensures that each wine is experienced in its truest form, without lingering flavors from the previous sample influencing your perception.

When tasting, focus on the fundamental elements of wine: acidity, tannins, sweetness, and body. Don’t be afraid to express your thoughts and impressions, but remember that taste is subjective. Embrace the diversity of opinions within your group, as it adds depth to the collective experience. It’s crucial to handle the glass properly to preserve the wine’s temperature. Hold the glass by its stem to avoid transferring body heat to the wine, which could alter its characteristics. While tasting, refrain from wearing strong fragrances, as they can interfere with the subtle aromas of the wine. Similarly, don’t rush through the tasting process. Take your time with each wine, allowing it to unfold on your palate and appreciating the craftsmanship that went into its production. Wine tasting is an art that demands mindfulness and appreciation. By following these dos and don’ts, you can elevate your wine tasting experience, developing a deeper understanding and connection with the captivating world of wines.

The Do Not Do List As the new year unfolds, we find ourselves immersed in the timeless tradition of seeking a fresh start. Many Americans embrace the spirit of self-improvement, often manifested in the form of New Year’s Resolutions. As the calendar pages turn, we must introspectively inquire: Is this a refined and enhanced version of ourselves, or are we simply adhering to the status quo of yesteryear? Do our aspirations mirror those familiar hopes from the past? If your answer aligns with maintaining multiple unfulfilled resolutions, welcome to the Procrastinators Club, the world’s largest organization, boasting a membership of 98% of the population. The comfort lies in the fact that you’re not alone. Perhaps it’s time to reconsider the frequency of fresh starts. Beyond the grandeur of a new year, opportunities abound every month, every week, and even every day. The dawn of each morning and the commencement of each hour provide
us with a chance for renewal. The abundance of opportunities invites us to break free from the Procrastinators Club’s grip.
So, let’s entertain a revolutionary concept to kickstart the new year – craft a “Do Not Do List.” Constrain this list to 10 items, contemplating habits and behaviors that hinder personal growth. Are you spending excessive hours in front of the television? Indulging in postdinner snacking on sweets? Overcommitting by perpetually saying yes to others? Hitting the snooze button habitually? Drowning in social media or texting? Succumbing to impulsive purchases? Oversleeping or battling sleep deprivation? Chronically tardy? Lacking a consistent exercise routine? Recognize that these habits bear consequences, hindering the pursuit of life’s dreams and goals. It’s time to break free from the allure of the Procrastinators Club. Begin with the first resolution on your “Do Not Do List”: DO NOT renew my membership in the Procrastinators Club. Elevate yourself beyond procrastination, embrace positive change, and let this be the year you stride confidently toward success. The Bug Guy
As the new year rolls in, residents of the West Valley can look forward to a fresh start—January brings mild weather and a sense of renewal, making it the perfect time to tackle pest control. With the cooler temperatures, many pests seek warmth and shelter indoors, making it essential to create a protective barrier around your home. By implementing simple measures, residents can enjoy a pest free living space throughout the year. One of the key aspects of pest control is preventive maintenance. This can involve sealing cracks and crevices in and around the home, repairing screens on windows and doors, and keeping the living spaces clean and clutter-free. By staying proactive, residents can limit the opportunities for pests to invade their homes.
to pest problems as they arise, residents can schedule regular pest inspections and maintenance. This forward-thinking attitude not only prevents potential infestations but also promotes a sense of empowerment and control. Furthermore, staying informed about pest control best practices and advancements is uplifting in itself. Taking the time to learn about new methods, products, and technologies can empower residents to make informed decisions and stay ahead of potential pest threats. Ultimately, the start of the year in the West Valley of Phoenix provides an opportunity for residents to embrace a positive and proactive approach to pest control. By staying informed, and taking eco-friendly measures, residents can create a cleaner, more harmonious living environment. With the right mindset and actions, the West Valley can remain a welcoming and pest-free oasis for all who call it home. Submitted by Larry Cash, of Estrella Mountain Pest Control
Additionally, being mindful of environmental factors is important in pest control. In January, we experience a relatively dry climate, which can affect pest behavior. By understanding the local ecosystem, residents can better anticipate and address potential pest issues. Embracing eco-friendly pest control methods not only helps in preserving the natural balance but also contributes to the overall well-being of the community. Moreover, January provides an opportunity for a shift toward proactive and sustainable pest control. Rather than reacting We Do Everything Screens!

trained agent who can request dispatch of police, fire, or ambulance.
Amidst the many New Year’s Resolutions families set at the top of the year, creating household safety habits and ensuring preparation in an emergency should be at the top. This year check out these five important actions to help keep your family safe.
3. Teach personal safety habits Emphasize the importance of staying aware of surroundings, exercising caution when speaking with strangers, and practicing basic self-defense techniques. Underscore the importance of paying attention to smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, and to never ignore them.
1. Create a home safety checklist The checklist should include checking smoke and CO detectors, including changing out batteries, locking windows, ensuring fire extinguishers are readily available in the kitchen and other shared spaces, and properly storing household chemicals like cleaning products.
4. Develop a trusted network Cultivate relationships with neighbors, friends, extended family, and community members to build a strong mutual support network. A network of trusted individuals is an invaluable resource that can help provide assistance during times of need.
When you say, “Alexa, call for help” you will be connected to a dedicated, professionally
5. Create an emergency plan Sit down with your family to discuss evacuation routes, emergency contact numbers, and designated meeting points. Talk about each family member’s responsibilities during different types of emergencies. By preparing for unexpected moments, you’ll foster a sense of security and resilience. Look Up!
While rising energy prices can lead to higher heating and cooling costs, any spike in energy bills should invite further investigation. If your home’s heating and cooling bills are higher than normal, checking with your neighbors to see if they’ve noticed similar cost increases is a good first step. If owners of similar sized homes in your area are not noticing higher utility bills, it may be time to take a closer look at specific aspects of your home’s heating and cooling system. The individual components in a home’s HVAC system work together to help keep your home
warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The furnace, air conditioner and thermostat are typically the most obvious parts of a system. However, other less visible elements, such as attic ductwork and insulation, also contribute to the HVAC system’s overall performance and energy efficiency. The ductwork in a home’s attic distributes conditioned air to rooms throughout the home. Leaks in ductwork, loose joints or poor connections between ductwork components can allow conditioned air to escape into the attic before it reaches the intended part of the home. The amount of insulation in an attic also plays a role in comfort and energy efficiency. What are some warning signs that a problem may be lurking in the attic? Rooms that are consistently too warm or too cold, or that have a musty odor, may indicate compromised attic ductwork. An increased level of dust inside the home is another sign that ductwork may need attention. Leaks in attic ductwork can allow dust and various particulates inside the attic to enter ducts. Distributed throughout the home, these particulates can negatively affect air quality. While torn ductwork is an obvious sign of a problem, attic ductwork issues are often hard to see by simply looking around the space. A contractor trained to inspect ductwork and assess insulation levels in the attic can identify issues that may reduce your comfort and lead to higher energy bills. It is important to remember that a higher energy bill does not necessarily indicate a problem with equipment. An inspection by a heating and cooling contractor who brings a system perspective to caring for a home’s air and the attic infrastructure that supports it can help improve a home’s comfort and energy efficiency season after season.
