From Me To You... You know that feeling you get when something bad happens, or is about to happen? The pit in your stomach. The feeling that you have a gaping chasm opening up inside and all hope is lost. A sense of impending doom. Quite dramatic I know, but about this time last year I felt that all was not well in the world. I talked to my husband about it at the time, dismissing it as worrying for no good reason. Well it turns out that maybe I did have a good reason. Not that I knew Covid-19 was going to cause a global pandemic and turn our world inside out forever. But I knew, deep down, something was ‘off’. We often have these gut feelings and as a woman I know them well. Although it took living in America to bring them out of me. Walking down a dark, deserted street at night in my youth I have felt misgivings. A sense that something was not quite right. Perhaps it was that person walking towards me or a noise behind me. I learned to trust those instincts and duck into a storefront or cross the street to a well lit area, or to just book it out of there as fast as I could. Living in New York in the early 90’s you learned to be street savvy pretty quickly. Now my instincts revolve more around my children. Even though they are mostly grown up and living a life away from home I still get uneasy

when I know they are driving long distances, or even just driving late at night. My parental radar goes into overdrive and nothing is right until I know all my ‘babies’ are safe. Silly, right? There is nothing I could do to help them if they did get into trouble, but nevertheless I am on high alert. Perhaps it is also because my children are still in the phase of their lives where they truly believe themselves to be indestructible. The feeling that they can conquer the world and nothing can harm them. Perhaps that is because I have been in front of them, every step of the way so far, clearing the path and reducing the risks, checking for danger before they see anything amiss. Perhaps it is endemic in all young adults. Whatever the reason it is an important right of passage. Without that lack of fear I would never have blazed a trail across the world, bringing me to this country and creating the life I have now. So pay attention to that little voice in your head — but don’t let it stop you from conquering your own challenges and getting the life you want.

The Bug Guy 2020 was a challenge for all of us. I encourage every one of you to do something, anything to help your family, friends, and neighbors to have a better 2021. It can be as simple as saying good morning, to as extravagant as paying for the next persons order at the drive thru. It is amazing how a small gesture of kindness can change someone’s perspective in a positive way. You can put your elderly neighbors trash bins away for them or ask if they need anything from the grocery store. Its not hard to do something kind for someone, in fact, it is easy. The little acts of kindness can change the day for someone having a rough day or week. Just think about what you can do to help the world be a better place for you and those around you. While we don’t have snow and the opportunity to offer to shovel our neighbor’s sidewalk, it is January and very cold in other areas of the country this time of year. These temperatures around the country bring us our winter neighbors. You can often tell a snowbird from a permanent resident as they wear long pants in the winter. Even our permanent residents may be rethinking their attire as this winter is slated to be a little warmer and drier than last year, and so far, that has been the case. With this weather pattern we can expect to see a “higher than normal” volume of bugs and a definite increase in termite activity! So far this winter we have already determined this to 6 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

be the case compared to previous years activity. Here are a couple things you should be aware of to help keep your dwellings as safe as possible: Termite activity is commonly visible as small dirt colored shelter tube coming from the ground up the foundation wall and then disappearing into the lower edge of the stucco. Shelter tubes may also be visible inside the house as dirt-colored tubes on an interior wall and possibly hanging from the ceiling, like a stalactite. Termites are not a DIY treatment. Therefore, we recommend a professional inspection if you see any of these signs on the exterior or interior of your home to validate whether you have an infestation. This inspection will provide recommended treatment to protect your home from further damage. Submitted by Larry Cash, of Estrella Mountain Pest Control

* I don’t know what else we can do for you...

It’s OVER; it’s finally OVER! Thankfully, we can say goodbye to 2020. I think we can all say 2020 was not without its fair share of hardships. Life can be challenging all on its own, but then you mix in a global pandemic and things can feel very overwhelming. Thankfully 2020 has ended, and I, for one, am thankful I am still here; I am grateful for my family, my faith & spirituality, and the opportunity to write this article. But there are many people out there that suffer from silent and invisible diseases. When you have an invisible disease, it is difficult to discuss your perspective with people who are inexperienced with these conditions. Some invisible diseases are Anxiety, Depression, Substance Use Disorder, Crohn’s Disease, Endometriosis, & many more.

Life takes lots of turns; many turns are out of our control, so once a person’s Anxiety and/ or Depression are triggered, it is hard to be resilient. That trigger can cause a chain reaction for a person that has a Substance Use Disorder. Most of the time, resilience coping mechanisms are to be active or around positive people who care. It is a real struggle to keep it together because we are forced to social distance and quarantine due to the pandemic. People with invisible diseases like substance use disorder or depression get tired of being asked and hearing: * Did you go to the doctor? * Have you tried this? * Have you tried that?

People who suffer from these silent, invisible diseases are stronger than they realize, but even the strongest warrior can struggle daily. These warriors need your support, patience, and compassion. That is why it is so important to know yourself, to know what works for you. Now that 2021 is here, it is a great time to start fresh and decide to work on the most important person you know, YOU! You are AMAZING and can make it through that moment, that day, that crazy year. Let’s make 2021 a year not about avoiding life and the negative triggers but learning to thrive with life and finding positive triggers that come with life. Save, Share, Spend Piggy Banks It’s never too early to teach your children about financial responsibility and the benefits of saving, sharing and spending money. Constructing a new “Save, Share, Spend” piggy bank is something that you can do with your little ones right at home, and will help them realize the importance of money and how it can be used in different ways. Then, when they receive money, have them break it up into these three buckets instead of putting it all into one piggy bank.

The goal of the different jars is to teach your children the hard work of saving money and the importance of using their funds wisely and effectively.

The Spend jar is for spending money wisely on things that they are ready to purchase.

Materials needed for the “Save, Share, Spend” banks are: three pint-sized Mason jars, three labels of your choice, and chalk or any color paint marker. Remove the lids from the Mason jars and screw the metal bands back on. Secure one label to the middle of each of the jars. Write “Save” “Share” “Spend” separately on each label with chalk or the paint marker. Now customize them! Include your children’s names and let them decorate the jars. Display the piggy bank jars where you and your children can easily see and access them. Happy Saving!

The Share jar is for giving back to the community or donating money to the cause of their choice.

Submitted by Nicole Bigham, On-site Owner, The Goddard School in Buckeye-Verrado

You can use the Save jar to help your children save money for something they really want to buy.

We help children explore and discover their interests through play in a safe environment. Highly trained teachers gently guide and encourage children every step of the way as they grow, develop and achieve important milestones.

When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.

There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.” There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown. • The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. • Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times.

• Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, can provide greater short-term sales growth, increases during a recession. • When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current and future sales. An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.” An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits. Another strategy used by marketers is using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. When the economy bounces back, regular pricing can return. Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand provides. Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share. Perhaps the best quote about advertising in a recession came from Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. When asked, “What do you think about a recession?” he responded, “I thought about it and decided not to participate.” -----------------------------We at Estrella Publishing are open for business and here working overtime to support our clients and potential future clients with their marketing strategy. Shop Local

The COVID-19 pandemic has been difficult on small businesses. Whether it’s a local eatery, retail store or another type of business, when you shop small, you’re supporting a real person. You can personally help make a difference by considering 9 simple ways to support small businesses: Shop now: No need to wait for a sale or special event. By shopping now you’re putting muchneeded funds into a small business that is depending on income each month to make ends meet and keep doors open. Reverse shopping: Rather than thinking of the recipient and then where to shop for a gift, think of the shop first and then the recipients that would most like items from that particular business. Go online: For small businesses that offer

e-commerce options, be sure to consider online orders that ship directly to your home. This is a safe and convenient way to support your favorite businesses. Shop in person: For businesses with physical locations, visit shops in person if you can use proper safety measures. If you know what you want, many businesses let you order ahead and opt for curbside or doorway pickup as well. Consider gift cards: Not sure what to buy? Gift cards are always one of the most desired gifts, so if you need to send a little love to a loved one, wrap up a gift certificate in a beautiful card and feel good about your present choice. Leave reviews: Online reviews can make a big difference for small businesses in expanding clientele. Go online and leave rave reviews for your favorite stores and why others should support them as well to help spread the word. Be vocal: In addition to online reviews, talk up your favorite small businesses among friends. From independent restaurants to local service providers, use your voice as a powerful tool to build their reputation and support growth. Double up: For businesses like independent coffee shops or bakeries, consider a larger order. For example, go with that grande latte and order two dozen cookies to share with your neighbors. Be patient: Small businesses are dealing with a multitude of challenges these days, from supply chain holdups to sluggish shipping and beyond. Your kindness is valued and your patience is crucial during these times. This is our time to give back to the businesses that help build our culture and communities.
