From Me To You... It’s January already and you know what that means? Resolutions! Ideas of things you want to improve upon, or achieve, in the next calendar year.
I usually try not to make any resolutions because I feel I am setting myself up for failure. If they were things I could do, wouldn’t I already be doing them? However, I am always up for a good challenge, so this year I am determined to try and run a 5k. Oh boy, now I’ve put it out there for everyone to see. I have many friends who run, they do 5ks, 10ks and I even know a couple who ran a marathon this year. (Well she was disappointed in herself as she only did the half because she had no time to train, but for heavens sakes if I could run 13 miles without training I would be pleased as punch!) In order to see if 5 kilometers was even possible I tried running 3 to start. I would say I managed 2/3s of it at a decent pace and had to walk the rest. In my humble opinion that’s how far a normal person goes without training. In theory I am fit enough to do the race, but my stamina is what gets me. I have been working out consistently over the last year and my strength has improved dramatically (not to brag but I can lift over 100lbs with my legs and a whopping 45lbs with my puny arms) and health-wise I am ready. Now I have to increase the dreaded cardio to get my lungs to stop screaming at the mile mark.
realized it was a 5k up into the Estrellas before the 17 obstacles my stomach plummeted. I had no choice at that point, it was run or get trampled under the enthusiastic feet of the other runners. I got through the race and thought the easy part was in front of me. Boy was I wrong, here came the obstacles. The first obstacle was a swim under logs in a pool filled with water and ice. Ice! Fine. Then came a tunnel. In the ground. I took one look at the tiny hole in the ground and thought, “There is no way I can fit in there!” But I did. And then I found some relief. It was quiet and dark in there. No-one to see if I was moving. So I rested my head and relaxed. Until I heard the next contestant behind me army crawling towards my refuge. The race ended with a leap over a fire pit. At that point I couldn’t imagine jumping over anything but somehow I managed. I am determined to train and not to repeat my mistakes next time. One might even call that a resolution.

I have done a 5k in the past, but I think I was so traumatized by the experience it has me a little gun shy. I signed up for the Gladiator 5k Fun Run for charity - and to be honest because my friend and I had drunk a glass of wine or two and thought it would be a great idea. We planned on training and of course did nothing to prepare. So when the day loomed over me, I knew I was in trouble. When I got to the course and 4 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

Home Sweet Home
Here are some healthy behaviors and design tips to help you bring nature’s sanctuary indoors.
Surrounding yourself with images of nature can have a positive effect on wellness. Try framing some photos of special memories in nature like a hike with your family, beach sunset or mountain view. Let in more fresh air and natural light Today’s homes are built tighter and more sealed, which means they trap toxins from daily living - such as cooking, cleaning, pets and more - inside. Adding skylights that can open will improve fresh air flow, helping rid indoor air of pollutants. Additionally, studies show that exposure to natural light helps to sync your circadian rhythm, allowing for better sleep at night. Up your chef game by using fresh herbs in your cooking that will fill your kitchen with natural fragrance. Making an indoor herb garden ensures you’ll always have some on hand. You
can also incorporate fresh herbs into bouquets or wreaths.
Waking up with stretching or meditating is a great way to prepare yourself for a successful day. Open the blinds or curtains on your windows and skylights to let in early morning light and help you feel invigorated and refreshed. Reap the benefits of nature by bringing it inside, adding greenery or even fruit into your decor. The possibilities are endless - use a bowl of fresh fruit as a centerpiece or mix different sizes of pots to create a succulent gallery. Little touches of green in each room will go a long way. Many common cleaning products have harsh chemicals that can be inhaled or absorbed into your skin. Combat the dangers of these toxins by switching to natural cleaning products. You’ll feel safer and more relaxed when your home is chemical-free. From boosting your home’s natural light to going green and adding plant life, it’s easy to turn your home into a natural oasis with these simple steps.

Standing in his hardhat, Pastor Nate Schaus couldn’t help but smile as he gave a tour of the nearly completed campus for Summit Community Church near Verrado Way and Roosevelt Street. Of course, for those who know Nate, the truth is – he’s always smiling.
For the past thirteen years, Nate’s smiling face has been seen throughout Verrado and the West Valley – at Rotary Club meetings, Chamber of Commerce meetings, football games, and community events. “I get it a lot. Strangers come up to tell me that Nate seems to be ‘everywhere,’” laughs Liz Schaus, his wife of 23 years. As a powerhouse in her own right, Liz has coordinated as many as 200 volunteers on a weekly basis and currently serves as Guest Connections Director.
Their family has grown along with the community since they arrived in 2007 with three small children. This year, their daughter Anna will graduate from VHS. Both Anna and son Tim (a sophomore) participate in Viper Vanguard Marching Band. Their youngest daughter, Rachel, will start VHS next year! To say they spend a lot of time at Verrado High School would be an understatement. In addition to school functions, Summit has called VHS home since 2007. Since that time, the church has grown from a handful of committed people to more than 1200 who call Summit home with 450 students at their popular Vacation Bible School program that kicks-off the summer. Leaving the school will be bittersweet for some, but there’s a lot of excitement for new 40,000 square-foot campus complete with eye-catching architecture and cross visible from I-10. While a permanent home is exciting, Pastor Nate is most thrilled about the opportunity to engage even more of the community. “I’ve had dozens of people stop and tell me that they are following the progress of the campus. It’s exciting to see doors opening and conversations that have started,” he explained. Summit Community Church will worship in the new facility on January 5th and host a Grand Opening including BBQ and bounce houses on January 26th. Summit offers children’s programing at all services and programs for 6th8th grade at 9am and high school at 10:45am. For more information, visit summitcc.org.

The Bug Guy
With all the rain we have had this fall, and winter, I expect a very aggressive explosion of bug activity this spring. Here are a few things you can do to get ahead of any potential infestations. Take a walk around the exterior of your house and look for Ÿ inch mud tubes going from the ground up the foundation of your house. These tubes are an indication of current termite activity. Look for what looks like a pile of coffee grounds against your foundation wall, this is an indication of a cricket infestation. Scorpions are less active during this time of year; however, they do not hibernate and can be active. Rats and mice are very active during the winter, if you suspect rodent activity, it is always best to contact a professional to evaluate and propose a solution. Let’s all be good neighbors and offer a helping hand. If your neighbors are elderly, something as simple as putting their garbage and recycling bins away can have a big impact! All of us want to keep our neighborhood clean, if you see garbage on the side of the road pick it up, always do this safely, not in traffic! Drive respectfully, if all of drive respectfully our neighborhoods will be a safer place. If you’re at the grocery store and need a cart take one from the parking lot. Always put your grocery cart in the designated area in the parking lot. It’s amazing the positive impact we can all have by doing simple, little things to make everyone’s day better.

Scams!
I don’t know about you but when someone calls from what appears to be a legitimate number and tell me there’s something is wrong with my credit card or my account have been frozen, I panic. Judging by the number of people who “fall” for these scams, others panic as well and do what they are told. The result being having their identities stolen or their accounts breached. Here’s what you need to know: scam artists are out in full force and they do not discriminate, targeting people of all ages, not just the elderly. Scams have become smarter and more sophisticated and can leave even the most vigilant person wondering how they were taken for a ride. Criminal predators use all forms of media to try to con people out of their personal information and many times money. Scams can come in the form of a phone call, email, text message or even a knock on the door. One of the key issues to avoid falling victim, is being able to identify a scam.
Say Something, Do Something.
80% of
heroin users started with Rx painkillers
There are a few basic red flags to recognize. Regardless of the “mode” of contact, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is! Never give anyone your personal or financial information unless you are one-hundred percent certain whom you are dealing with. In addition, do your own research. One of the most prolific scams hitting Arizona are con artists calling folks pretending to be from the Social Security Administration with the goal of getting victims’ Social Security numbers to eventual access their financials. There are a number of variations of this scam. It is important to remember legitimate government offices will not threated you, demand money or ask for access to your bank accounts over the phone. If you have any concerns about the legitimacy of the call, hang up and call the SSA directly at 1 (800) 772-1213. Phishing schemes are also making the rounds. These can come in the form of a text message, email or phone call from what appears to be from your bank warning about a problem with your account or credit card. Many times, they try to panic the victim by claiming their account had been locked. A legitimate institution will never email or call asking you to verify your information. Just like in sports, the best defense is a good offense. In the case of scams, offense means knowledge. Educate yourself about scams. The Arizona Attorney General’s Office investigates consumer complaints and has a wealth of information on their website about scams at www.azag.gov. It’s a well-known fact that exercise and fresh air hold many physical and mental health benefits for us humans, and also for our four-legged friends. A walk is a nice bonding experience for you and your dog. Regular walks are also fun for meeting new fur-friends and neighbors. A happy and tired dog is less likely to become bored and destructive around your home as well. A hearty stroll is also good mental stimulation for your dog to see, smell and hear beyond his typical surroundings. I’ve heard that when dogs stop to smell at every shrub that it’s their version of reading the paper, and that they can catch all the neighborhood news with a few good sniffs! Luckily for us, January has beautiful walking weather here in Verrado. When out for your

#VeryVerrado 5 Habits to Help With Your 2020 Goals
Habit #1: Add “Creator/Entrepreneur/Writing/ Side Hustle” time to your day This is unbelievably important. It’s simple but let’s think about this. If you want to create something of your own, or learn a new hobby, skill, etc. then you need to make time to do it on a regular or daily basis. Consistent improvement of your craft or skill is a major part of reaching your goals. It won’t always be pretty, but you still need to show up and do it regularly. Habit #2: Meditation/Prayer I know that these might not be things that everyone will or wants to start, however, if you’re open to it, pursuing a daily practice of meditation and prayer will profoundly change your life. I used to meditate because I felt like it was something that I “should” do and now I do it because I know that it helps me to be the best version of myself. Habit #3: Create a Movement or Exercise Practice That You Will Look Forward To Exercise doesn’t have to be torture, but I know that it seems that way for many people. The key is to exercise in a way that is enjoyable for you. Use some trial and error, and see what works for you. Whether it’s running outside, going to the gym, doing a workout video at home, walking, etc. Keep trying until you find something that you enjoy.
Habit #4: Make a Small Wins List This is something that I just started, so I can’t claim to be an expert. But, I’m really enjoying it so far. Now, I initially started this because I found myself feeling discouraged, as though I wasn’t making as much progress as I would have liked to be making. However, as I went through my day, I found that there were so many little things to be excited about and grateful for. The fact is that 99% of life is the journey, not the destination. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be so focused on the lack or only looking at the finish line, and miss out on the great things that are happening right in front of me. Regardless of how successful or unsuccessful you feel right now, believe me, you DO have little wins to be excited about. Habit #5: Track Your Progress Since I’ve started tracking my progress, I’ve gained so much more clarity. If you’re wondering what I track…let me explain. Here are a few things I track: Journaling (Goal: 15 minutes daily) Time (I track what I do daily in 15 min. increments) Affirmations (Goal: 1 time per day) Reading (Goal: 20 min. or more per day) Water (7–8 glasses daily) Another Big Goal…Community Involvement… Very Verrado! Stay Active!
The New Year is a popular time for adults to renew or establish health & fitness goals. As parents, our main goal is to also keep our children happy and healthy. One challenge, especially with enticing gadgets received for the holidays, is getting our children to keep active and understand the importance of exercise. Creating good habits early helps children maintain and form positive habits later. We want to teach our children to turn off the TV, put down the electronic devices and go outside to use their energy and imagination. Forming a New Year’s resolution together as a family to stay active is a great way to remain accountable and keep it going all year long! Here are some ideas of what you and your child can do together to stay active: • Go for a walk in the park or in your

neighborhood and have a scavenger hunt (look for a pine cone, a red bird, etc.); Use sidewalk chalk to create a hopscotch court and teach your child to play the game; Find a new park or playground to explore; Walk your dog or play fetch with your dog as a family; Plant flowers together in a garden; Visit a local zoo or museum; Go outside and play with a bouncy ball; Teach your child to ride a tricycle or bike; Have a family room dance party; Set up a small inflatable pool in your backyard; Play Simon Says, and make sure Simon includes plenty of jumping and other active movements.
These simple activities will be fun for you and your child, and definitely keep everyone moving! Submitted by Nicole Bigham, of The Goddard School

Testing Hot
I just got off the phone with a mother whose 25 year-old son has relapsed; he just tested “hot” for opioids. The more I listened the more my heart grew heavy for her and her situation. He is being admitted into drug treatment center for his substance use disorder. But mom is beginning to lose hope because he has been admitted into drug treatment centers multiple times. She is now wondering if her son will be another statistic that will land her into an exclusive club that grows larger every day. The members are parents who have lost a son, daughter or another loved one to opioid and/or heroin addiction resulting in death, usually by overdose. Here is a really scary statistic: 80% of those who become addicted to heroin started with opioid pain medication prescribed by a doctor. (Opioid painkillers such as OxyContin®, Percocet®, Vicodin®, Percodan®, Tylox® and Demerol® among others.) Heroin is also an opioid and is illegal. These pain medications are highly addictive and that is one reason we find ourselves in an opioid crisis. One approach is the “tough love” approach, where family members avoid enabling the addiction. Unfortunately, with our current opiate crisis, “finding your bottom” all too commonly can mean death from overdose, especially with our streets being flooded with fentanyl, a deadly opiate that people often mistakenly buy, looking for heroin.
Another approach instead of tough love is, people are simply using plain old love. Each slip or relapse is met with support and patience, as families increasingly understand the chronic and relapsing nature of addiction. Many believe that this is a safer and more humane way to respond to addiction. Whatever approach you use, one must protect one’s finances, and you may need to change passwords or secure valuables. If living with your addicted loved one is just too stressful, alternative living arrangements may be necessary. You may need to change your locks. Families must decide whether they truly wish to go deeply into debt to fund a second or third stint at rehab. “Testing hot” doesn’t have to be a death sentence. Get help for your loved one! Money Matters If you’re fortunate, you’ll live independently and in good health throughout your retirement years. However, if you ever needed some type of long-term care, such as a stay in a nursing home, would you be financially prepared? Consider the following:
• Someone turning age 65 today has an almost 70% chance of eventually needing some type of long-term care, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. • The average cost for a private room in a nursing home is about $100,000 per year, while a home health aide costs about $50,000 per year. Therefore, you may want to evaluate the following options for meeting these expenses: • Self-insure – You could “self-insure” against long-term care expenses by designating some of your investment portfolio for this purpose. However, as the above numbers suggest, you’d likely have to put away a lot of money before you felt you were truly protected. • Long-term care insurance – Some policies pay long-term care costs for a set number of years,
while others cover you for life. You can also choose optional features, such as benefits that increase with inflation. Longterm care premiums get more expensive as you get older, so if you’re interested in this type of coverage, don’t wait too long to compare policies. • Hybrid policy – A “hybrid” policy, such as life insurance with a long-term care/chronic illness rider, combines long-term care benefits with those offered by a traditional life insurance policy. So, if you were to buy a hybrid policy and you dont need long-term care, your policy would pay a death benefit to the beneficiary you’ve named. Conversely, if you ever do need longterm care, your policy will pay benefits toward those expenses. Ultimately, you may decide you’re willing to take the chance of never needing any type of longterm care. But if you think that’s a risk you’d rather not take, then explore all your coverage options carefully. There’s no one right answer for everyone – but there’s almost certainly one for you. Up, Up And Away! Temps have cooled off in Phoenix. The sun will be out early in January 2020 when the hot air balloon races and Street FoodFest return to the Goodyear Ballpark in Goodyear, Arizona. For the third year, the Goodyear Ballpark will play host to the 9th Annual Arizona Balloon Classic featuring the Street FoodFest and will benefit the Valley of the Sun United Way as a Community Partner. The Valley of the Sun United Way’s mission is to champion youth success and break the cycle of poverty for Valley families. “We fight to end hunger in the classroom, to end homelessness, and to put a stop to financial instability.” A portion of ticket sales will go directly back to the Valley of the Sun United Way programs. The Arizona Balloon Classic is Arizona’s premier hot air balloon race & festival and will attract up to 20,000 fans and consumers. In 2020, the Arizona Balloon Classic will consist of multiple “Hare and Hound” Hot Air Balloon races. Actual hot air balloon racing consists of multiple competitions in order to get the closest to the center of a target, which will determine who the winner of the “Race” is. The “Hare” balloon leaves first to place the “Target” and the rest of the balloons; the “Hounds” chase the “Hare” to the target. The “Hound” balloons are subjected to dropping markers onto a large target on the ground. The closer the marker is to the center of

the target; the better chances of qualifying for the $2,500 cash purse. Sort of like darts from the sky, except you’re moving where the winds take you.
On Saturday and Sunday mornings, up to 25 hot air balloons will participate and partake in the competitions that are set up. Spectators and fans are encouraged to watch the hot air balloons as they participate in the “Hare and Hound” races. Races will be open to the public on Saturday, January 25th and Sunday, January 26th. Evening “Glows” on Friday night, January 24th and Saturday night, January 25th. *Weather permitting and all events are subject to change. The event will be held at the Goodyear Ballpark (1933 S. Ballpark Way – NE corner of Estrella Parkway & Goodyear Blvd. in Goodyear, Arizona). In addition, there will be hot air balloon rides, hot air balloon tether rides, live music, food, beer tents, FREE inflatables at the QT family fun zone, stunt bike riders, fireworks and more. Advance ticket on sale right now at www.abcfest. com. Visit - www.abcfest.com or www.facebook. com/ArizonaBalloonClassic for additional details and updates. The Right Pill
While the effort to sustain better overall health is commendable, there is skepticism among healthcare experts regarding the medical benefits of dietary supplements. When caring for your health, it’s important to know the critical differences between prescription medicine, overthe-counter medicine and dietary supplements. Prescription medicine is a pharmaceutical drug that legally requires a medical prescription to be dispensed. In the United States, before prescription medicine can be marketed and sold it must be tested rigorously and deemed safe, effective and manufactured to highquality drug standards by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The prerequisite of medical practitioner oversight reflects the potential benefits and risks of prescription medicine and the importance of taking it appropriately. Over-the-counter (OTC) drugs are drugs that consumers can use without prescription, based on the assumed ability of the consumer to selfdiagnose the condition and then use the OTC drug by themselves without medical monitoring. OTC drug candidates are also assessed by the FDA for safety and effectiveness. Often drug manufacturers submit data to the FDA showing a drug is appropriate for self-administration accompanied by studies showing that the product’s labeling can be read, understood, and followed by the consumer without the guidance of a health care provider. Dietary supplements are not prescription drugs. Rather, they are classified by the FDA as food. As such, they are not intended to treat disease and their safety, efficacy and manufacturing quality have not been reviewed or approved by the FDA. They can sound very appealing as they promote hope and possibilities. In part, this is because advertising of dietary supplements is not subject to the restrictions and disclosures of prescription drug advertising.Consumers need to know that when a product label says it “may work,” it hasn’t necessarily proven to the FDA that it is effective. With so many options and perceived “solutions” in front of consumers today, it’s critical that you check with your healthcare professional if you have a condition that requires a “therapy.” Only a healthcare practitioner should be providing medical guidance on what you should take given your specific medical needs and history.
