From Me To You... I asked my Dad once, what was the invention during his life that he thinks changed the world the most. Now bear in mind that since he was born we have nuclear reactors, disposable diapers, space travel, car seat belts, disposable contact lenses and microwave ovens. His answer? The internet. He believes that it has radically changed everything it has touched. And he could be right.

The world is constantly changing and evolving and we need to keep up. I spent a very frustrating morning recently helping my dad ‘keep up’ with technology. He loves to have the latest and greatest but unfortunately doesn’t always understand how to use all the gadgets he acquires. You don’t know frustration until you have to help someone in their 70’s install a video doorbell from 6,000 miles away. If it wasn’t for the internet I couldn’t have looked up the instructions and video-chatted with him until we got it sorted out. So perhaps he is right on that one.

he decided that he couldn’t hear me over all the noise so he held the phone up to his ear to improve the connection. The technology was so amazing we could see the individual hairs in his ear canal. At the beginning of a new year I always wonder what marvels will appear in our lives. In ‘73 it was cell phones, in the late 80’s the world wide web, once those two came together everything changed. What is on the horizon for us in our future? I am still holding out for the Hover Boards promised on Back to the Future, assuming I will be young enough to use one when they finally get here!

He was also one of the first pensioners to purchase the ‘new fangled’ Apple computer. And I-Phone - although he only turns it on to make phone calls. Along with these purchases Dad also opted to join the Apple Care program, where they hold classes to teach you everything you need to know, and offer unlimited help in the store for the first year. Anyone who knows Apple stores knows that they feature a lot of glass windows and walls. Dad told me that he went in so many times for help that when they saw him strolling towards the store, computer in hand, they would scatter. He thought it was very amusing because he could see them too. Our first Facetime was over Christmas a few years ago and Dad was very proudly showing relatives in America and the UK how amazing his tech was. Wonderful use of the internet. Cold Brew

Cold brew coffee is popping up everywhere. You may have seen it on the menu of your favorite coffeehouse or in the refrigerated section of your local grocery store, but what exactly is cold brew coffee, and why are people raving about it? Cold brew coffee is commonly confused with iced coffee, but the name comes from how it’s brewed rather than how it’s served. Cold brew coffee is slowly steeped in cold water using coarsely ground coffee beans. While you can brew a pot of traditional hot coffee in a few minutes, cold brew takes hours - 12 or more - to achieve the signature result.

of hot-brewed coffee’s flavor and aroma yet only dissolve in hot water. The cold brew method doesn’t extract the bright flavors associated with these acids but extracts the rich chocolate and caramel notes that result in the rich and smooth beverage with a difference that you can taste. Cold brewing from scratch at home can be quite the task, but that doesn’t mean you must choose between expensive coffeehouse cold brew and the messy, time-consuming process of cold brewing at home. The solution: Java House(R) Authentic Cold Brew Coffee Dual-Use Liquid Pods can be enjoyed hot or cold at home. The smooth, rich taste of cold brew can be savored by itself all year long. The caramel and chocolate notes extracted are characteristic features of cold brew and not something you’ll naturally find using other coffee brewing methods.

When you taste a high-quality cup of cold brew coffee, the difference is apparent. Coffee made using the cold brew method has a smoother, naturally sweeter result that tastes less acidic than traditional hot-brewed coffee. The reason for this is the solubility of the organic acids inherent in coffee are extracted at higher brewing temperatures. The organic acids (like citric, malic, formic, quinic and acetic) are a signature aspect

Home Sweet Home

Are you thinking of selling your house and want to know some of the best ways to boost your home’s value, demand top dollar and potentially inspire a bidding war? Whether you’re selling in a few months or a few years, there is one strategy that gets noticed in real estate markets across the United States: green home improvements. Green homes can sell faster and for more money than comparable houses without ecofriendly features. Better yet, green homes are increasingly in demand. Here are five improvements to consider to green your home and help it stand out from the competition.

Solar panels: Can you imagine producing enough energy that your local utilities company pays you for the surplus? With solar panels, this is possible. Plus, solar panels are extremely attractive to buyers who like that a system is already in place, and they can simply move in and enjoy the benefits. Plus, there’s a $5,911 resale increase per installed kilowatt, according to the USGBC, which means a 3.1 kilowatt system could improve your home’s resale value by about $18,000. Smart water-leak detection: Home water leaks waste 1 trillion gallons of water per year, according to the EPA. Fixing detectable leaks is a no-brainer, but what about hidden leaks? Use intelligent-water technology like the Phyn Plus smart water assistant + shutoff, which is installed on the main water line after the meter. Not only can you target invisible water leaks and make repairs to reduce your water footprint, but the device also shuts off the water in an emergency, so you (and future homeowners) never have to worry about damage from things like a burst pipe.

of residential heating and cooling energy use, according to the U.S. Homebuyers are sure to like the updated appearance of new windows, plus they’ll appreciate the savings from increased energy efficiency. Landscaping and treescaping: The right landscaping provides wonderful visual allure to a home, but it can do so much more than that. Strategically planting trees and shrubbery can provide bountiful eco-friendly benefits. During the hot months, shade from trees and other large plants can help keep a home cooler, so your HVAC systems don’t have to work as hard. By adding the right plants to your yard, you’ll add curb appeal and green resale benefits that go beyond beauty. Smart thermostat: You can save as much as 10 percent a year on heating and cooling by simply turning your thermostat back 7 to 10 degrees for 8 hours a day from its normal setting. Savvy homeowners looking to get the most out of green home improvements should consider a smart thermostat. They go beyond simple programming and are able to analyze home usage trends, make energy-efficient setting suggestions, and can be controlled remotely. Whether you’re moving soon or will some time in the future, green home improvements boost value now. When it comes time to sell, these updates are sure to capture the attention of the modern homebuyer.

Flu Risks

During the 2017-2018 influenza (flu) season, nearly 80,000 people died and more than 950,000 people were hospitalized due to flu and flu-related illnesses, and less than four in 10 U.S. adults (37.1 percent) were vaccinated against flu, fewer than in previous years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While those who are vaccinated may still get the flu, the vaccine helps prevent serious complications that may result in hospitalization, loss of independence or even death. It is particularly important for people with certain chronic health conditions like heart disease, diabetes and lung disease to receive an annual flu vaccine, as they are at higher risk for flurelated complications. In fact, 92 percent of those hospitalized for flu during the 2017-2018 season had an underlying medical condition that put them at risk for serious flu-related complications. “It is essential for everyone age 6 months and older to receive an annual flu vaccine,” said NFID Medical Director William Schaffner, M.D. “For people with conditions like heart disease, diabetes or lung disease, it is an important part of managing their condition, like taking a statin, checking their glucose or using an inhaler.” Surprisingly, there is low awareness of the connection between chronic health conditions and serious flu-related complications. A new survey from NFID revealed that:

Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

* Less than a quarter of U.S. adults recognize that people with heart disease and diabetes are at greater risk for flu-related complications, and awareness is significantly less for people of color than white respondents. * Less than 20 percent of U.S. adults are aware that heart attack, worsening of diabetes (16 percent), stroke (13 percent) and disability (10 percent) can occur as potential complications of flu. The dangers are real. Research shows that individuals with heart disease are up to 10 times more likely to have a heart attack within three days of flu infection and people with diabetes are at six times increased risk of flu-related hospitalization. “Flu causes inflammation in the body that can result in serious complications,” said Albert Rizzo, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, American Lung Association. “For the more than 31 million people living with lung disease such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, flu can worsen their condition and lead to a loss of lung function.” More information on the connection between flu and serious complications for those with certain chronic health conditions can be found at www. nfid.org/flu-chronic-health-conditions.

Furry Friends

We would like to ring in the New Year with some gratitude…

Thank you to everyone who shared in the One Lump or Two Holiday English Tea event and the Hometown Holiday festivities. We are so blessed to be a part of such a compassionate and generous community. You’re Invited… We are hosting an Artisan Craft Fair on Sunday February 10th in Verrado. For more info, please visit www.CommunityPaws.org. January 24 is Change A Pet’s Life Day. This day is dedicated to encouraging pet adoption and spreading awareness about animal welfare issues. You may have heard this quote, “When you adopt an animal from a rescue, you’re saving two lives: the life of the animal that you adopted and the life of the animal that’s going to take its place”. th

Here are some ways that YOU can make a positive impact in a pet’s life:

10 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

•Adopt. •Become a foster parent. •Become a foster friend. We will pair you with a local foster to help with walks, socializing, and of course, lots of belly rubs! •Volunteer your time at some of our local events, or help out on Saturdays as a volunteer. •If your child is 10 years of age or older, check out our Junior Division. Our Junior Division has been so valuable at our community events. •Make a charitable donation. •If you have a pet at home already, teach him new tricks or begin a regular exercise routine. The weather is beautiful this time of year! See what you can do to connect with your special furfriend on a deeper level. “Saving one pet won’t change the world, but for that one pet the world will change forever.” Changing a pet’s life for the better will change your own life for the better. Animals have a special gift in teaching us unconditional love. Our lives are so much more full with our fur-friends in them. Honor your special friend with the gift of your time and love today. Winter Driving Americans are more than twice as likely to drive as fly this year (76 percent vs. 24 percent), according to Hankook Tire’s newest Gauge Index Survey. Wherever you are headed, bank on busy roads. Check out these five tips to ensure everything for your trip is well-oiled, wellmaintained and, well, worry-free this winter:

1) Check the tires Before settling in behind the wheel, don’t forget to look at your tires. The Gauge found 27 percent of Americans hope to stay on top of their car’s maintenance schedule better in the new year, but it’s never too early to kick-start those resolutions! Instead of kicking the tires, try the penny test to see if yours are ready for the road. Insert the penny into the tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside down - if you can see all of his head, it’s time to replace your tires. Check out the i*Pike

RW11 tire with an integrated studdable tread design to help you stop on a dime when winter roads get really rough.

2) Stay tuned Beyond your four tires, it’s also a good idea to give your entire car a quick checkup before taking any road trip. Look under the hood to ensure adequate fluid levels, including antifreeze and wiper fluid; check the headlights, taillights and brake lights to be sure no bulbs are burned out; inspect windshield wipers for signs of wear; and make sure there is air in your spare tire. 3) Pack prepare Keeping an emergency kit in the car is always a good idea, especially if you’re driving toward inclement weather. A roadside emergency kit should include first-aid materials like bandages and antiseptic, as well as tools that can help in the event of an unexpected breakdown. Be sure you have jumper cables, flashlights (with extra batteries) and roadside flares, as well as drinking water and non-perishable snacks to get you through any delay. For added peace of mind, double-check that your roadside assistance subscription is current. 4) Map your route While nearly a quarter (24 percent) of Americans have built-in navigation in their vehicles, it’s still a good idea to scout your route before putting the car in drive. At the very least, make sure your passenger has a good sense of direction. 5) Get in the groove A solid road trip soundtrack still wins as the top road trip entertainment for nearly half (46 percent) of Americans, according to the Gauge. Set your playlist before getting in the car, and make sure it can last the length of your road trip ... and then some, in case you do end up in a traffic jam. Keep your winter travels worry-free with these tips, and here’s to smooth sailing - or rather, driving - all season long!

Going for Success This is the time of year we go for the fresh start. It has been part of our western culture as a tradition for more than 200 years in its present form. Most Americans focus on self-improvement and that improvement comes in the form of New Year’s Resolutions. Yes, another year has come and gone and we have to ask ourselves; is this the new and improved addition of me or the same old same old we were last year? Do you still have the same Hope to List? Hope to lose weight, volunteer more, eat better, stop smoking, drink less, get out of debt, save money... If you answered yes to two or more, you may be a member of the largest organization in the world, the Procrastinators Club. The good news is there is no need to feel alone; 98% of the population belongs to this organization. Maybe we need more opportunities for fresh starts other than the New Year. This should fix things, right? By my count we have multiple opportunities. Every 30 days or so – a new month. Mondays – a new week. Need more fresh starts? Each morning – a new day. At the top of every hour – a new hour. Wouldn’t you

agree there seems to be an abundance of opportunity.

This leads us back to the Procrastinators Club. So here is a radical idea: start your New Year off by creating a “Do Not Do List.” Limit your list to 10 items. Ask yourself what habits and behaviors are not working for me? Maybe your list includes things like watching too much television. Overeating or snacking after dinner on ice cream and sweets. Over scheduling. Always saying yes to people. Hitting the snooze button on the alarm. Spending too much time on social media or texting. Impulse buying. Sleeping too much or too little. Being late for everything. Lack of an exercise routine. All these habits and behaviors have consequences. Rather than taking action on our dreams and goals in life, we enjoy all the benefits of being a member of the Procrastinators Club…much to our demise. The very first item on that Do Not Do List: DO NOT renew my membership in the Procrastinators Club Submitted by Author Larry Tracey, Executive Director of Youth4Youth.org and Program Director of the Way Out West Coalition

#VeryVerrado New Years Resolutions

After spending awkward quality time this holiday season with family steeped in meals, gifts and traditions, many people will be prepared to make bold, sweeping changes in their lives. Forty percent of Americans will take stock of their year and make a declarative statement of their intentions for the year to come. Eighty percent of us will fail within 30 days. With only 8% of resolution makers actually seeing follow through, more often than not making a resolution will result in frustration and a sense of defeat. Resolutions clearly don’t work for the majority of people in America. Why continue putting energy into something that is bound to fail? Instead, do these four things to achieve whatever goal you decide to set. Forget About Saving Money—Hold Yourself Accountable With A Budget Let’s be real—nobody wants to set a budget. They’re not fun, they can be restrictive and sometimes they’re downright depressing. The easiest money saving tip is, of course, to not buy things you won’t use. Take for example a gym membership. A 2014 episode of the Planet Money podcast found that half of the people who hold memberships at Planet Fitness never go. That’s a massive amount of money going down the drain. Save your money and skip the gym

until you know you are actually going to stick with working out. There’s no need to buy an excessive amount of workout clothes or equipment and to join a gym that you won’t use just to wallow in your failure 30 days later.

Instead, check out the thousands of free workouts on YouTube. You’ll have a massive variety to choose from, you can do them in your home and you’ll have spent nothing which is a great price. Once you’ve mastered the discipline of actually working out on a consistent basis, then seek out a gym that fits within your budget if that’s what you think you’d like. Another area to effectively cut your spending is to take a look at all of your subscription services. Are you using them to their full potential? Is it worth the cost? Are you even aware of how much they add up to? Look for other money-saving sources in your budget. Utilize your local library instead of buying books. Take advantage of free admission to museums. There are lots of ways to get the things you want without sacrificing your quality of life. Lastly, make your money work for you. Check out coupons and rebates for things you regularly buy to save a little cash. Apps like Ibotta show you available deals with others like Dosh link to your accounts and grant you savings automatically when you make your purchases. Many people consume more fiber or prunes, drink more water, or take a laxative such as magnesium to improve their daily elimination of stool. But what they have not been told by their physicians is that constipation is a neurological problem. The autonomic nervous system is major part of the central nervous system that regulates our hormones, immune system, emotions, blood pressure, and our organs including the intestinal track. The autonomics can be injured with trauma to the head, emotional trauma, or inflammatory damage from the immune system. The symptoms that occur from the autonomic damage may be either low blood pressure and oxygen delivery to the brain (headaches, neck

tightness, poor concentration/focus or fatigue) or a slowing of the intestine conveyor belt (i.e. intestinal tract).

When the intestinal track slows each segment of the intestine will develop particular symptoms. If the stomach does not push its contents forward efficiently a person can experience heartburn, reflux, nausea, and bloating. Slow motility of the small intestine results in cramping and is referred to as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) if excessive. Whereas, constipation is the direct result of the inadequacy of the nervous system to create the proper muscular contractions to propel the contents forward. In other words, constipation is first and foremost the result of the brain not working properly. Symptom surveys performed after concussion injuries in soldiers and athletes reveal that anywhere from 50-70% experience some level of constipation within the first week after their injury (and heartburn occurs in about 30%). Although changes in diet and the use of OTC laxative agents can be useful when the constipation is uncomfortable, you can also work on improving autonomic nervous system function with high doses of fish oil, olive oil (certified by the COOC), and the use of a prebiotic plant fiber called inulin to help balance your intestinal bacteria and lower inflammation. With time, those dietary additions stand a good chance of putting your constipation into remission. Š 2018. Nemechek Consultative Medicine. All Rights Reserved.

Housing Market Voluntary Child Support Payments and Mortgage Financing

Qualifying for a mortgage during or after a divorce may seem cumbersome to many with the proof of receipt of income, copies of documents and more. But what if there is no divorce? What if there is no court order for child support and all payments are voluntary? Can voluntary child support be used as qualified income when applying for a mortgage? Yes, voluntary child support may be used as qualifying income for a mortgage but you may be limited to your options. FHA mortgages will accept voluntary child support as qualifying income; however, you will typically need to show twelve (12) months proof of receipt; proof the

support will continue for a minimum of three (3) years after the new mortgage loan closes; and a written agreement between you and the parent paying the child support. Additionally, to be considered stable income, the child support payments must be full, regular, and timely payments. In addition, if full or partial payments are made on an inconsistent or sporadic basis, the income may not be acceptable for the purpose of qualifying for mortgage financing. School Zone New Year’s Resolutions

The start of every new year brings the excitement of the unknown and offers the opportunity for reflection on the year that has passed. The idea of a clean slate, even a new beginning, gives us the opportunity to create goals that we want to accomplish over the course of the next year.

want to accomplish. You can ask questions to help get them started: What hobby, sport or instrument do you like? What is your favorite food? How many books did you read this year? While they develop their goals, work on a few of your own. Make this time together a chance for your children to experience your “grown-up” life. When all of you are all finished writing out your New Year’s resolutions, take turns reading them out loud to each other. Reasonable, well-thoughtout goals can empower your children to achieve something that they had not considered before. Tack up your lists on a pin board or put them on the fridge. Review them occasionally throughout the year to see how everyone is doing. At the year’s end, have a celebration, whether you hit your goals or not, and start planning for next year!

In 2019, you can make creating New Year’s resolutions a family event. Give your children a pen and paper for them to write out three goals Submitted by Nicole Bingham, of The Goddard that they School

Money Matters How can you assess your investment portfolio’s performance in 2018? You can get a clear picture of how you did if you keep your investments’ returns in the proper perspective – by making sure your expectations are relevant, realistic and reviewed. Let’s look at how these terms can apply to your investment progress: Relevant – Many investors compare their portfolio returns to a popular market index. But this comparison is not really valid for a variety of reasons. Indexes are typically not diversified across different types of investments. But your portfolio should consist of a broad range of investments. Also, your portfolio’s performance will be affected by your contributions and withdrawals, while market index returns are not. So, instead of measuring your results against an index you’re better off establishing relevant expectations of your investment returns, based on your specific goals, and then compare that desired return with your actual results. Realistic – Ideally, of course, you’d like really high returns with really low risk – but that’s really not

feasible. To get high returns, you’ll need to invest aggressively, which means you’ll need your portfolio to be heavily weighted in stocks. However, stocks are also riskier than more conservative investments, such as bonds or government securities. So, you’ll need to be realistic in what you can anticipate from your portfolio. You can shoot for high returns and accept the higher level of risk, or you can lower your expectations in exchange for greater stability. Reviewed – The performance of the financial markets will fluctuate from year to year. Consequently, it’s important to review your portfolio’s results and the progress you’re making toward your goals on a regular basis, possibly with the help of a financial professional. In addition, you may even need to re-evaluate these goals in response to changes in your life as these changes could affect the rate of return you need from your investments. By looking for relevance, being realistic, and reviewing your portfolio, you can gain a thorough understanding of where you are, where you want to go – and how you can help yourself get there. Winter Pest-Proofing Can Keep Rodents Away

For many homeowners, pest proofing is a chore relegated to the warmer months of the year. But many pests gain entry into homes in the winter as they seek shelter from the cold weather. In fact, according to the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), rodents alone invade an estimated 21 million homes in the U.S. each winter. With 24% of homeowners reporting mice infestations specifically in the winter, they are among the top pest issues of the season. Mice and rats spread diseases like Salmonella and Hantavirus when they contaminate food, and bring fleas, ticks and lice indoors. Rodents can also cause serious structural damage by chewing through wood and electrical wiring. Other winter invaders pose health threats, as well. Cockroaches and ants contaminate food sources, and cockroaches can trigger asthma attacks in children. Spiders bite when they feel threatened, causing serious reactions in some people.

prevent infestation troubles by taking a proactive approach in eliminating entryways into the home.” To prevent pests from infesting your home this winter, NPMA recommends following these tips: • Seal cracks and holes on the outside of the home. • Inspect wires, insulation and walls for gnaw marks, which may indicate a rodent infestation. • Store boxes off of the floor to prevent rodents from residing in undisturbed areas. • Keep branches and shrubbery trimmed away from the home. • Store firewood at least 20 feet from the home and five feet off the ground. • If you suspect an infestation, contact a pest professional. Submitted by Larry Cash, of Estrella Mountain Pest Control

“Pests including cockroaches, ants, spiders and especially rodents are common home invaders in the winter,” says Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPMA. “An infestation by these pests can cause serious health and property issues if not properly dealt with in a timely manner. However, homeowners can help
