From Me To You...

Welcome! to the January edition of Main Street magazine!

Happy New Year! You had to know it was coming, an editorial about resolutions. It is the time of year after all.

My resolutions are probably much the same as many of yours. In the past I have resolved to eat less and move more. That one is not fun, but it works... over the last year I have lost over 20lbs following that mindset. I fell off the proverbial wagon many times and I did not enjoy most of it, but there is a great satisfaction once the pounds finally start to disappear. I really thought I was doing well in my goal until I renewed my driver’s license recently and discovered that I am still 20lbs heavier than I was when we moved here 13 years ago. Rats.

Another resolution I tried in the past was to eat less chocolate. That was a non starter. I really don’t even know why I suggested it in the first place.

A big one for me was to stop procrastinating.

I am living in the Land of Last Minute Tasks and I am their queen. Putting things off until I have no choice but to finish them is my raison d’etre - or reason to be if you prefer English.

There are always so many other things I would rather do than whatever it is that I have to do.

Part of my problem is the lack of focus that has seemed to follow... Squirrel!!!

Where was I? Ah yes procrastination... I think the only thing I do on time is meet my deadline, producing these magazines every month. I am actually quite proud of my record for hitting my print deadlines for the last almost decade. I do have to admit that if there was not a team of people at the printer waiting for me, that would probably not be achievable.

However I do hate to disappoint others. So thank you Gene for keeping me accountable.

On to this year.

I get to meet many people through this job and I love talking to them and hearing their stories. Some of the people are young and some not so young. From the last group the thing I hear most often is that they wish they had taken better care of their teeth. Sure there is a smattering of regret over the one that got away and the life choices made in error. But mostly it is the teeth.

I am guilty of not going to the dentist on a regular basis. I have had so many fillings and crowns that the last time I complained to my dentist about pain in a tooth he actually said, “That is not your tooth it is a crown, so I don’t think it can be hurting.” Ah. As a parent I am vigilant about the 6 month check ups and cleanings for my kids. I march my children in there telling them it is not an option and that they will thank me one day.

Meanwhile the nagging guilt that I am not following my own advice is thrumming away in the back of my mind. “I am so busy” I tell myself, or “I will make an appointment next time I take the kids.” I have an excuse for every point. But those people I spoke to are right. If I lose my teeth I cant eat chocolate.

Hold on, I have a great point there. Excuse me I have to make a phone call...

Home Sweet Home Happy New Year to All!

The New Year has traditionally been a time of reflection when we look back and consider our future goals too. At Verrado Realty we look at this time of the year in the same way. We take a look at the West Valley and all that has changed and grown over the past year and what we see ahead.

The new development within Verrado and the West Valley is bringing more job opportunities and people looking at homes with potential relocation in mind.

With the Fry’s on Indian School and Jack Rabbit coming, along with other shops, restaurants and businesses, we certainly have a vibrant community worthy of those seeking to make a change. The promise of new warehouses off the 303 and the rumor of a Costco opening in Goodyear also brings the hope of more job growth. We are, once again, seeing a renewed influx of people from out of state visiting Verrado. The winter/spring is always the busiest time in the real estate business. We did have a fairly busy summer/fall as well. All of this is definitely a positive sign for a healthy real estate market, a positive thing for all of Verrado!

For those of you considering a change, this is a great time to have your home on the market. There are more buyers looking for homes and the warm Arizona weather often drives them to Arizona and the West Valley. Verrado is an amazing community, as you know, with all the community has to offer it really draws those in search of a great lifestyle. As we see the value of the homes here increasing, and homes selling at a quicker pace, this is indeed a great time to list your home.

On Our Cover

Our cover models this month are members of the Verrado Spanish Class. The paper head is the founder of the group Kathy McSparren who has moved to Atlanta for a year, she will return to the group when they come back to Verrado. Kathy, although not a native Spanish speaker herself, was learning Spanish and wanted to improve her skills so she started the group and began teaching others over 7 years ago.

The class is a warm group of people who all want to improve their fluency and be able to use their Spanish in various ways. (One example is George, who does all his banking in Spanish at the local Wells Fargo - despite the tellers trying to speak to him in English. He had a few hiccups at first but is now confident in his skills.) The group are 99% retirees, all college graduates and some with masters degrees, all who decided to study another language later in life and several who speak 2 or 3 languages. Dont let that scare you away, anyone at any level can join the group, the goal is to learn.

They meet every Friday at 11am in the Verrado Coffee Shop and anyone who is interested in learning or improving their Spanish is encouraged to attend. There is no cost to join the class however you are expected to buy the text book that is used.

Starting in January there will be an introductory class in addition to the intermediate one that is currently running.

The class is primarily book oriented with conversation, grammar lessons and written homework. When I met them they were having a lively discussion about their recent Thanksgivings.

Maria Godinez is the instructor for the class, just recently she answered their call for a native Spanish speaker. The group had come to the conclusion that in order to take their Spanish to the next level they needed a push, and Maria is that push for them.

The class not only meets to learn Spanish, they have field trips too. The latest, and most impressive, was a 2 week immersion course in San Miguel Allenda, Mexico. Several members of the class went there and stayed with local families while taking classes for up to 6 hours every day. They all felt very safe and had a wonderful time, going on tours and sampling the local culture in their down time.

The group is also proud of their community work.

They are always looking for ways to help others, using their language skills. In Buckeye they work with the food bank and Xmas Cause, giving food and gifts to needy families at Christmas.

The Doctor Is In Bloated

If holiday meals have left you feeling bloated, you are not alone. The sensation of abdominal bloating often originates from the stomach or small intestine. Understanding which type you feel may help you find relief if your bloating continues into the new year.

The first thing to understand is that bloating occurs from different sources. One cause occurs when we overeat because a particular food or meal was delicious, and the stomach is expanded with food and gastric secretions. This cause is obvious and short-lived and will not occur again until the next irresistible meal.

A second cause of bloating is when the small intestine expands with liquid and gas after eating food, which is triggered not by food quantity but by an imbalance of intestinal bacteria.

An abnormal overgrowth of colonic bacteria within the small intestine (called SIBO) may cause exaggerated bloating especially after eating particular foods. The triggering foods vary from person to person but common examples are tomatoes or spices. Other triggers might be any type of fiber, nut, vegetable, or fruit.

from an abnormal increase in fat underneath the abdominal muscles. This tends to be located higher in the abdomen, protrude forward and up against the stomach, and because it is below the muscles it cannot be felt other that the firm pressure it creates (cannot pinch an inch).

This build-up of intra-abdominal fat occurs when the hypothalamus in the brain is injured often from the wide variety of inflammatory vegetable oils and advanced glycation end products (AGEs) found in prepared foods.

Some people have abnormal bloating from a protein known as gluten which is found in high concentrations in wheat, barley, rye, and oats.

In this case the bloating is a consequence of an abnormal inflammatory response that occurs when they ingest gluten.

The third form of bloating is a nervous system problem. Think about your intestinal tract as one big conveyor belt that moves food, liquids, and secretions forward. This conveyor belt action is under the control of the autonomic nervous system.

The autonomics are composed of the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches and if these fail to work in unison, bloating may occur that has no clear association with food or liquid intake.

Autonomic bloating often increases through the day or happens quickly after even a small meal and often does not resolve until the following morning.

If the bloating is accompanied by cramping, the individual is often given a diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Life As A Caregiver Imagine if you yourself had a disease or condition that was terminal for which there was no cure.

And…you were of the age that hindered you from understanding or remembering what it was that was wrong with you. That is often the scenario for an Alzheimer’s patient.

In my mother’s case, which is not unlike many, she has other issues. Hers is chronic head pain. Not migraines, but headaches every single day of which not one doctor has been able to determine their cause. The head pain is what keeps her in bed most of the day. The head pain is what robs her of a busy and happy life. And it’s the head pain that causes her be to depressed. She has had head pain every day of her life since her mid-20’s. That is cause for depression.

Everyone gets depressed from time to time. But as it applied to me, there had always been something or someone to snap me out of it. Some special event to look forward to; some special person who did something nice and put a smile on my face…. you know how it goes. But when a person suffers from chronic pain or Alzheimer’s or any other terminal disease, there isn’t much that can make them snap out of it because the disease or condition is with them constantly.

I have found that living ‘in the moment’ is what is important. The only thing Alzheimer’s patients HAVE is ‘in the moment’. So….it is important to find the things that make them happy in that moment. Right now. This very minute. Instant gratification. Some of the things that have worked for us are as follows: ~ Ice cream. Mom loves ice cream, so as an after dinner treat, I will give her some ice cream once in a while. The smile on her face says it all. She won’t remember she had it ten minutes later, but for that moment she is happy and enjoying every mouthful. ~ Music. Mom loved music and always went around the house singing. So frequently I will play music on the cable music channel and she sings or hums right along. Again, the smile on her face says it all.

It’s always amazing to me that with music, it is an instant recall. ~ Fast-moving sports on tv (like the Olympics, football, basketball….even baseball, if it’s the SF Giants). She enjoys watching her favorites (the SF Forty Niners, the AZ Cardinals, the Golden State Main Street

Warriors) and can follow along since the games move quickly. ~ Wheel of Fortune. She enjoys trying to guess the puzzles…and is still pretty good at it. ~ Looking at old family photos and her high school yearbooks. They bring smiles to her face.

Once you have established a few things that they can still enjoy, you can make them part of your routine. My mom won’t truly remember eating the ice cream or listening to the music or watching the games or playing Wheel of Fortune or looking at the photos….but she knows what they are and knows they make her happy. Which in turn, makes ME happy. For the moment.

But what about MY depression? The caregiver is often left with depression of a different sort. We KNOW what is happening to our loved one. And we KNOW that we can’t fix it to the degree we want.

We continue to work hard to keep them comfortable and as happy as possible. But when the lights go out at night and we’re alone with our thoughts, we KNOW what is coming. We just don’t know WHEN. What about THAT kind of depression?

For me, I try and face reality. I try and tell myself that I am doing the best I can with the resources I have. And I tell myself that my mom knows I am taking good care of her. That does give me a bit of comfort. But I also find that I need to focus on ME, as well.

The best way for me to do that has been to surround myself with people I can talk with. They aren’t experts in Alzheimer’s disease or skilled therapists. They are friends who simply care about me and let me share my thoughts. I try and stay active with projects and people that make me happy, I work-out to keep my mind and body healthy and to relieve stress, and I have come to enjoy the quiet. Taking the time to prepare my thoughts for what is coming. Depression is a horrible thing. But, if we’re smart about it and do what we can to keep it at bay, we can move forward in spite of it. That is my goal for both my mom AND myself.

The Bug Guy With a new year upon us and last year in the past, we are all looking towards what the next year will bring. As individuals, and as a group, we have the power to continue to change our community for the better and there is no time like the present to make positive changes.

Here are some ways we all can make a positive difference in our community this year.

What we contribute is every bit as important as what we say and how we act. The way we interact inside our community affects our contributions and our attitude. The way we welcome new people into our community and encourage participation will impact their involvement and contributions. Everything makes a difference and we should resolve to make it a positive difference.

We want to stay positive but it’s not realistic to believe everyone will agree on everything all the time. We need to speak our minds, but it should be done so appropriately. Some conversations are appropriate on public platforms, some are not particularly those that involve personal differences or heated emotions. How we handle our differences and resolve conflicts has a significant impact on our community. Consider the following questions:

How we act within our community sets a standard that others will follow. If we set a positive example and do the right things as members we will have a positive impact on the community. Be the change you want to see in our community and others will follow your example. Here are some simple ways to set a positive example: Always: Be nice Be helpful Contribute selflessly Speak from the heart Remember: We all live here Not everyone will always agree with you Your answers might not work for everyone A community does what is best for the community, not individuals Your contributions always matter Have a very happy new year. Everyone has those days. You’re operating in a fog, or perhaps you spaced out on a family member’s name in the middle of dinner, or maybe you just find it hard to concentrate on work or hobbies.

When these unwanted situations begin to come up more often, you may start to worry. Aging has long been associated with a slow mental decline.

The good news is there are simple things you can do to clear the cobwebs and regain your focus.

Dr. Mike Dow, a psychotherapist and best-selling author, says we often don’t realize the brain is just like the heart, our muscles, our lungs and bones - it needs maintenance, and healthy habits to help keep it working at its very best.

“People understand pretty well that if they eat healthy, quit smoking and start exercising, they can improve their cardiovascular health,” Dow says.

“But they don’t always connect the dots of living a healthy lifestyle to improving cognitive health.”

To help you reach your optimal brain health, Dow offers these everyday tips.

Give yourself a daily challenge If you catch yourself in a rut or locked in your routine, it may be time to find ways to stretch your mind muscles with a new and challenging activity.

Researchers have discovered that healthy brains need certain levels of reserves, and challenging them is one way to build those reserves.

“Think of your brain like a bank account,” Dow says.

“Every time you learn something new, or play a challenging game or read a book, it’s like depositing a dollar into that account. The more cash deposits you make, the more you have to spare.”

Feed your brain

Like other parts of the body, the brain needs food and nutrients, and the right food can go a long way to support brain health. An antioxidant-rich diet including things like unsweetened tea, berries and turmeric can protect the brain from damage that comes from aging and oxidative stress.

Tend to your relationships

As life and circumstances bring inevitable changes, the number of people we count as friends and loved ones can change over the years. It takes effort, but Dow says it’s important to try to maintain our relationships and be open to creating new ones, because they can have a profound effect on brain health.

“Relationships tend to buffer us from the stress of daily life, which is good because over time, excess stress can cause inflammation,” Dow says. “At the same time, good, healthy relationships give our lives meaning.”

To meet new people, try simple things like inviting a neighbor over for dessert, joining a book club or volunteering for a nonprofit or cause that’s important to you.

Get enough sleep We often short ourselves on sleep when life gets busy, but it’s important to make it a priority, Dow says.

“Think of nighttime sleep as a wash-and-rinse cycle that clears away the ‘bad stuff’ that builds up during the day,” Dow says. “Brain fog and dementiacausing plaques are washed away by cerebrospinal fluid, and this process is more effective when you’re sleeping.”

Dow recommends practicing healthy sleep habits, such as striving for eight hours each night, being consistent with your bedtime routine and using melatonin instead of prescription and over-thecounter sleep aids to help you drift off.

For many Americans, fixing a flat remains a mystery. According to a survey from AAA, nearly 20 percent of U.S. drivers don’t know how to change a flat tire. Before hitting the road, study up on these flat-tire-fixing hacks and build up the confidence to complete this all-American road test: Be spared: Knowing how to change a flat is all for naught if a spare tire is not along for the ride.

Spares are usually hidden under the carpet in the trunk area, but they aren’t always included in newer vehicles. When purchasing a new vehicle, ask the dealer about the inclusion of a spare.

Flatlining signs: It’s fairly easy to spot a flat tire it’s usually accompanied by a loud noise or rubber flapping. When in doubt, activate hazard lights and move the vehicle safely out of traffic, ideally on a flat area with enough space on the side of the road. Once in a safe spot, remember to practice high visibility: Wear a reflective vest and position reflective emergency warning triangles to alert motorists - both of these items should be added to your roadside toolkit.

Hit the road, Jack: Having the right tools on board is critical, of course, and that’s where a jack comes in. Remember, the jack is only used to get the vehicle off the ground, not to hold the vehicle in place - that’s where the jack stands come in to ensure a safe and sustained lift. Refer to the owner’s manual for the proper

placement of the jack and the stands, which is typically the sturdiest part of the vehicle.

Rider’s block: A common, and dangerous, error when changing a tire is not using blocks to prevent the wheels from rolling once the vehicle is raised.

A tire-changing tool pack should include bricks or wooden wedges to be placed behind the wheels at the end of the vehicle that isn’t being raised.

Get loose: Once the jack has been cranked up, and the wheel is slightly off the ground, it’s time to remove the hubcap and then call for another key tool, a tire iron, to loosen the lug nuts and then pull off the flat tire. Be careful not to strip the lug nuts.

On the road again: With the flat tire off, line up the spare tire’s holes with the wheel bolts and push on, hand-screwing the lug nuts back on. Then, lower the jack a touch so the wheel is in slight contact with the ground. Use the tire iron to further secure the lug nuts in a “star-like” pattern: After tightening the first lug nut, tighten the one that is diagonally across from it and continue in that pattern. This will prevent the wheel from wobbling.

In an age of mobile phones and easy connection to roadside assistance, the knowledge of addressing a flat tire has gone out the window - or the sunroof.

But, motorists should know - and practice - the basics of changing a flat to ensure they are prepared for the dreaded pop.

Through years of investing and saving for retirement, Baby Boomers have experienced a lot and learned many helpful lessons along the way.

5) Start saving early and often - Eight in 10 retired Boomers believe saving a portion of monthly income toward retirement is one of the best things you can do, and 60 percent said they wished they had started investing as young as possible.

Five Golden Rules From Retired Baby Boomers Boomers have learned many lessons - some good, some bad and all beneficial to future generations of investors. Here are five rules that these seasoned investors found to be essential to saving for a secure retirement.

1) Stay invested for the long term - A large majority (92 percent) of retired Boomers say that Americans need to save more for retirement by getting and staying invested in the market. When asked about what they would do in fluctuating markets, only three in 10 would adapt their strategies based on market conditions.

2) Keep an eye on fees - Low fees and transparency really matter to Boomers. Ninety-four percent of retired Boomers want to be able to easily understand the fees they pay, and 78 percent stressed low-cost simple investments to buy and hold for the long term.

3) Diversify your portfolio - Eighty-five percent of retired Boomers believe that building a diversified portfolio is one of the most important elements for a safe path to a better retirement.

4) Protect yourself against market downturns Eight in 10 retired Boomers stress the importance of protecting their nest egg and lowering the risk of losses during market downturns. Thirty percent of Boomers wish that they had learned sooner what to do in turbulent markets - near the top of the list of

Unexpected Retirement Costs Retired Boomers are surprised by their spending patterns and are paying more than expected on unanticipated items.

Health care tops the list in terms of surprise costs and unanticipated spending in retirement, with 43 percent saying they are spending more on health care than they had planned. Travel, an activity popular with retirees, is also more costly than expected, with 40 percent of retired Boomers spending more on travel than they anticipated.

Rounding out the top five items: One-third report paying more in taxes than expected, and about a quarter say they are spending more than they had planned on food or utilities.

While these surprise costs may exceed retired Boomers’ expectations, they are not losing sleep over their finances. Among Boomers who are already retired, less than one in three list having enough money for retirement as a top concern, while two-thirds of Boomers still working say it is a top concern.

Whether your “perfect retirement” is traveling the country on a motorcycle, sitting by the pool all day or starting your dream second act, following these rules could put you on track to fulfilling your retirement dreams.

Most working professionals want to advance their skills, land that promotion and get a raise.

However, some 36 million adults face a significant barrier to achieving their goals and aspirations: They still need to complete a significant amount of coursework in order to earn a college degree.

While many of these adults have completed at least some higher education classes, the demands of family life and maintaining a career, along with a lack of financial resources, can both be forces that derail these plans.

Fortunately, the pathways to earning a college degree are evolving, which means a working professional now has more affordable and efficient means to finish the coursework. With a smart strategy, a busy working professional can make that dream of earning a diploma into a reality.

Some people know exactly what they want from life and how a college degree will help them fulfill their goals. Others may have more general ambitions related to finishing the degree, but they may need to take time to create a more detailed plan. In either case, before choosing a higher education program, it’s important to take time to inventory skills and career experiences. Education

For a working adult, using traditional means to earn a degree isn’t always best-suited to the realities of life - not to mention finances. Positive Parenting If you’re a parent with a smartphone or tablet, it didn’t take long before your little one first reached for your shiny device. If only their fingers weren’t covered in slobber at the time, you may have been more willing to hand it over. The good news is that saliva is easy to wipe off! S’mores? Not so much.

To your surprise - and theirs - learning how to swipe and tap objects to make them move on the screen came quickly and naturally. Oftentimes the challenge soon becomes how to keep their hands off the device. It’s perfectly acceptable, even beneficial, for young children to have these interactions with technology ... but only with appropriate parental guidance.

How young is too young?

Young children can strengthen their interactions with other family members, as well as improve their familiarity with sounds, words, language and the world around them, through the responsible use of technology. Most experts agree, however, that children under the age of 2 probably shouldn’t trade their rattles in for tablets. There are enough real-world interactions to keep them busy, and whether they play with blocks or pull the cat’s tail, these tangible experiences are important to their development. There will be plenty of time to show them Angry Birds when they’re a bit older, so allow them to develop their senses by exploring, touching things and even getting into a little mischief.

Once beyond the 24-month mark, you can begin introducing technology to your little tyke.

Chances are he or she may already enjoy the privilege at preschool; many toddler day-care centers and preschools now incorporate technology, from computers to tablets, into their curriculum.

Kids’ access to digital media

Whether at school or at home, most youngsters interact with screens before they turn 5. According to a survey conducted by the Joan Ganz Cooney Center, more than eight in 10 children from age 2 to 10 use digital media every week. In fact, two-thirds have tablets or e-readers. While the interactions are practically inevitable, significant parental and caregiver involvement can help steer them in the right direction, ensuring kids are exposed to content providing the best opportunities for learning.

Between laptop computers, desktop PCs, tablets, televisions and smartphones, there’s probably a screen in nearly every room of your home. Although these screens can and often do serve as virtual babysitters, games, apps and other content should be carefully selected, and screen time should be limited to an hour or less a day for toddlers.

Parental involvement By using technology with your children, you’ll introduce them to the most beneficial content, while also bonding with them over an exciting, shared experience. Something as simple and fun as taking turns in a game or reading together on a tablet can also help ensure technology is being consumed in a responsible way that can educate and aid development.

While education is key, it doesn’t always have to be about learning your ABCs and 123s.

Plenty of games and apps combine learning and entertainment experiences that are fun for kids. Checking the ESRB age and content rating information in console and online stores (like the Nintendo eShop, the PlayStation Store, the Xbox Store and Windows Store) is a great way to find appropriate games for kids of all ages.

ESRB ratings are also assigned to mobile games and apps in the Google Play Store, complete with content descriptors and interactive elements when applicable.

As your little ones mature from toddlers to tweens, their use of technology as well as the technology itself will certainly evolve. The breadth of content they enjoy will greatly expand, highlighting the importance of parental involvement in managing and monitoring their time with tech. Regardless of where our smartphones and tablets take us, parental involvement and engagement is key to ensuring kids enjoy a healthy, responsible relationship with technology.

Weekday schedules get crazy, which is why the first casualty of all that chaos is the family dinner.

While most families say eating together is a high priority, day-to-day reality is different. According to a 2013 poll by NPR and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, only half of children in the U.S. are in families that dine together. Yet research cited by the American Academy of Pediatrics shows that children reap many benefits from regular family meals, from improved academic performance to developing a deeper sense of resilience.

But busy families can find time to sit down together more often, says Colleen Burns, a lifestyle expert and spokeswoman for Nestle’s Balance Your Plate program. To be successful, set the intention with good planning and smart strategies. What’s more, these meals can also be delicious and nutritious.

“When you have simple solutions in your toolbox to get those well-balanced and tasty meals on the table in the little time that you have, it lets you establish and keep an important family ritual,” says Burns, who is also a busy mom of six boys. “At the same time, you don’t get burned out, and that’s key to staying motivated and inspired.”

To help you get started, Burns shares her top three simple tips to get delicious and nutritious meals on the table quickly.

Shop the freezer section: When you’re in a time pinch, frozen foods have many offerings that set a good foundation for any home-cooked meal, Burns says. Oftentimes, the quality is just as good as their fresh counterparts.

Don’t sacrifice: If you know what to look for when shopping the grocery aisles, you can find convenient Main Street

entrees and sides without sacrificing taste or quality.

Maintain balance: Look to a variety of entrees and sides to bring a nutritional balance as well as delicious flavors to your dinner menu. Burns recommends opting for lean proteins like fish and chicken served with fresh or frozen veggies.

Marinated Garlic and Lemon Roasted Chicken Drumsticks with Honey Mustard Sauce 10 chicken drumsticks 1 large lemon zested and juiced 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 3 whole cloves garlic, chopped 1 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon oregano 1 pinch each salt and pepper Minced parsley for garnish Honey Mustard Sauce: 3 tablespoons melted butter 1/2 cup honey 1/2 cup mustard 1 tablespoon lemon juice Directions In a bowl, mix together lemon juice, zest, olive oil, chopped garlic, paprika, oregano, salt and pepper. Add chicken drumsticks and toss to coat evenly. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and place in refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. When ready to cook, let chicken come to room temperature for about 20 minutes. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Arrange chicken on oiled foil-lined sheet pan. Bake uncovered for 20 minutes. Flip chicken pieces and cook another 10 minutes until chicken reaches 165 degrees and is no longer pink. Make sauce in a small bowl by whisking together the mustard and honey. Add water as needed for a workable consistency. With a small pastry brush, brush sauce over chicken and broil 5 minutes until bubbly. Place chicken pieces on a serving platter and sprinkle minced parsley over all.

In the 1970s, people believed that there was no such thing as too many plants in their home. This affection for indoor greenery is back, and homeowners have revitalized confidence in their green thumbs. From large potted plants in the corner to hanging basket plants, green living is in and people are loving the opportunity to create an urban oasis of their own.

Money Matters

We’ve reached the end of another year – which means it’s just about time for some New Year’s resolutions. Would you like to study a new language, take up a musical instrument or visit the gym more often? All these are worthy goals, of course, but why not also add some financial resolutions?

IRA contributions are not deductible, but earnings can grow tax-free, provided you don’t start taking withdrawals until you are 59-1/2 and you’ve have had your account at least five years. You can put virtually any investment in an IRA, so it can expand your options beyond those offered in your 401(k) or similar plan.

Here are some ideas to think about:

• Build an emergency fund. Try to build an emergency fund conaining three to six months’ worth of living expenses, with the money held in a low-risk, liquid account. This fund can help you avoid dipping into your long-term investments to pay for unexpected costs, such as a new furnace or a major car repair.

• Increase contributions to your employersponsored retirement plan. For 2018, you can contribute up to $18,500 (or $24,500 if you’re 50 or older) to your 401(k) or similar plan, such as a 403(b), for employees of public schools and some nonprofit groups, or a 457(b) plan, for employees of local governments. It’s usually a good idea to contribute as much as you can afford to your employer’s plan, as your contributions may lower your taxable income, while your earnings can grow tax-deferred. At a minimum, put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered.

• Try to “max out” on your IRA. Even if you have a 401(k) or similar plan, you can probably still invest in an IRA. For 2018, you can contribute up to $5,500 to a traditional or Roth IRA, or $6,500 if you’re 50 or older. (Income restrictions apply to Roth IRAs.) Contributions to a traditional IRA may be tax-deductible, depending on your income, and your earnings can grow tax-deferred. Roth

• Control your debts. It’s never easy, but do what you can to keep your debts under control. The less you have to spend on debt payments, the more you can invest for your future.

• Don’t overreact to changes in the financial markets. We’ve had a long run of rising stock prices – but it won’t last forever. If we experience a sharp market downturn in 2018, don’t overreact by taking a “time out” from investing. Market drops are a normal feature of the investment landscape, and you may ultimately gain an advantage by buying new shares when their prices are down.

• Review your goals and risk tolerance. At least once in 2018, take some time to review your shortand long-term financial goals and try to determine, possibly with the help of a financial professional, if your investment portfolio is still from someone appropriate for these goals. At the same time, you’ll want to re-evaluate who knows you your risk tolerance to ensure you’re Sound financial advice not taking too much risk – or means only making possibly too little risk – with your recommendations that investments.
