From Me To You...
supervisor says,”Sorry mate, we are only taking red containers today. Back of the line!”
‘Tis the season. Just not the season you are thinking of. Sure the holidays are upon us, but the season I am talking about is the “let’s tighten our belts and make do” season.
It seems to me that the problem goes further than infrastructure, at this point it is organization that is needed. Either that or someone needs a good kick in the pants. You decide.
I am sure you are well aware of the supply chain restrictions. Couple that with the massive number of people who have left their jobs and you see a gap in the market that is unprecedented. That is a word that has been used far too much lately but it is, again, true. Have you noticed the emptying shelves at your local supermarket? The items ‘out of stock’ when you try to order them online? This is all due to that pesky supply chain problem.
So that is the first problem but let’s add another one to the pile. Gas prices are rising, and that is never a good thing. Especially in a state where we have to drive for everything. Growing up I was used to a robust train and bus network. If you didn’t drive and needed to get around, there was a bus or train that could get you where you had to go.
I watched a news segment the other day and I was shocked to find that, on top of all the containers sitting at ports waiting to be unloaded and trucked to their destinations, there is another problem. The ports are limiting which color of container can be returned empty to the yard. So, say you are a truck driver with an empty green container and you wait 8 hours or more in line to return your ‘empty’ and pick up a ‘full’ in exchange. You get to the front of the line and a

When I was 22 I decided that I wanted to see the country, and having been raised on reliable public transportation, I knew that trains were the way to go. So I booked an around-the-country train ticket on Amtrak. I packed a backpack and set out with a friend to see the sights. We started in New York and headed south for the first leg of our trip. Things were ticking along smoothly as we sat sandwiched between commuters and children on school field trips. Then we got south of D.C. and things ground to a halt. Well not completely, but they may as well have. The trains outside of metro areas travel at approximately 30 miles an hour. And the dinging. Oh my goodness! That noise is one I still hear in my nightmares. Ding, ding, ding! It went on for hours. Despite the noise and the lack of speed I managed to see a good amount of the country, in fact there are only 9 states I have yet to visit. Now if the price of gas ever goes back down, then I may go on a road trip and finally see those last few states.

Holiday Giving Buckeye Police accepting holiday donations for families in need Anybody can be a superhero by giving. That’s the idea behind local non-profit Buckeye Superheroes. It’s a network of community groups, churches, and schools that supports Buckeye families in need. One of their signature events is “A Christmas Cause” providing presents and supplies for the holiday season. For the 9th year in a row, Buckeye Superheroes is joining forces with Buckeye Police to collect toy donations. Buckeye Police employee and President of Buckeye Superheroes, Don McWilliams, says he’s always impressed by the community’s generosity.
Buckeye Superheroes spend months collecting holiday items for “A Christmas Cause.” On December 18th, families that registered with the program will receive a package that includes a toy, blanket, book, game, and a food box.
McWilliams says volunteers help make this event possible. “It’s a huge blessing to see families that have been in need in the past are now helping,” says McWilliams. Buckeye Superheroes served more than 450 families during last year’s “A Christmas Cause” event. They hope to make the 2021 event an even bigger success. Buckeye Police is accepting toy donations up to December 18th. Just bring a new and unwrapped toy to the police headquarters at 21699 W. Yuma Rd.
“Most people feel good when they give, and it makes them have that warm feeling inside,” says McWilliams.

Great Outdoors Over the past 18 months, Americans coping with the upheaval of the pandemic retreated to the great outdoors in record numbers. As more people head outside, it’s increasingly important to preserve and protect the great outdoor spaces of the American Heartland. We must all do our part to follow simple, yet important guidelines to ensure these areas will remain pristine for future generations to enjoy. Next time you escape to nature, remember these few tips to keep our outdoor spaces as beautiful as they can be: 1. Do some research Learn about the places you visit before venturing out, so you have a plan to safely enjoy the outdoors while protecting it. Look up specific trails to follow and view the natural wonders you’ll want to discover. You can also prepare in advance by becoming well-versed in important information about park passes, waste collection, rules and camping permits, plus inclement weather warnings and fire safety tips.
2. Leave no trace Tread lightly and respectfully through nature and make sure to carry out what you carry in. Bring along at least two reusable trash bags and take the initiative to pick up trash or items left behind by others. 3. Do not disturb Respect wildlife habitats. Avoid feeding wild animals, as this can cause health issues for them. Research about that area’s wildlife to learn whether your visit coincides with a special time like nesting or mating for certain animals. If so, it might be best to reschedule your trip. 4. Stay on trails When you stray even slightly off a trail, your foot traffic can cause significant damage. This can create a domino effect - other visitors behind you will likely see the squashed flora and follow suit, unfortunately causing even more harm to the habitat by widening the newly created “trail.” 5. Get involved Community organizations across the U.S. have faced funding and volunteer participation challenges due to the ongoing pandemic. It’s more important than ever to help local nonprofit organizations make a difference.

Keeping Your Child Occupied While Traveling For many of us, holidays mean family vacations, which often include long car rides. When you talk about your destination and all the fun activities planned, everyone gets excited and counts the days until departure. Finally, the day arrives, you’re finished packing and you hit the road! Half an hour later, you hear the inevitable: “I’m bored,” “I’m hungry” and “Are we there yet?” It is normal for children to feel this way. Sitting in the back seat with little to do can make a long trip seem endless. If we, as adults, sometimes have a hard time sitting in the car for too long, how can we expect children to enjoy it? The answer is to plan fun activities that will help pass the time. Keep your child occupied for the duration of the car ride by bringing headphones for music and movies, books, stuffed animals, coloring books, crayons, pillows and blankets. Bring a variety of
®
snacks and drinks. Plan a few rest stops along the way so your child can stretch and use the restroom. This breaks up the journey so the ride does not seem as long. Interact with your child so they don’t feel isolated in the back seat. Talk about how much fun the family is going to have and what you will do when you arrive. Practice the alphabet by taking turns finding the letters in order on road signs. This game is fun and challenging, and it takes up a lot of time! What are some ways you pass the time with your little ones on long car rides? Submitted by Nicole Bigham, On-site Owner, The Goddard School in Buckeye-Verrado

Furry Friends Community Paws is once again hosting our popular English afternoon tea, “One Lump or Two,” on Sunday, December 12, from 2-4:00 pm. Afternoon tea was likely started in the mid1800s by the Duchess of Bedford. As a way to bridge the gap between mid-morning breakfast and late-evening dinner, popular after kerosene lamps were introduced, she began inviting her friends over in the afternoon for assorted snacks and tea. Based on this tradition, our afternoon tea will include plenty of tasty bakery treats and desserts for you to enjoy with your tea. Tickets are $25 per person and are available at communitypaws. org. This event always sells out, so be sure to reserve your tickets as soon as possible. Are you still looking for that perfect holiday gift? Perhaps you are preparing for extra house guests, or maybe you just want to treat yourself. We’ve got just the item for you. We are teaming up with LolaBird bedsheets to offer our community friends a terrific product at a fantastic

price. These 1800-thread-count, wrinkleresistant, and moisture-wicking bedsheets sell for over $150 in department stores, but LolaBird is offering them to us for $49.95, regardless of size. By purchasing these sheets, you will not only sleep well, but you will also be supporting Community Paws in our efforts to save the lives of animals in need. This fundraising offer ends December 16, so go to communitypaws.org to place your order today. We also want to remind you of other ways you can help our cause: 1. Set up an online account at Fry’s and select Community Paws as your designated charity. 2. Shop using your Amazon account through smile.amazon.com and choose Community Paws as your charity of choice. 3. Create a monthly or one-time donation through our website. 4. Community Paws would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for your kindness and generosity this past year and wish you, your loved ones and your furry friends a healthy holiday season and a New Year filled with joy. The Bug Guy Winter in the West Valley is the best place to be! I don’t know about you, but I am ready for the comfortable days and cool nights. It’s a perfect time to get together and enjoy quality time with friends and family. The holiday season is around the corner and another opportunity to reconnect with old friends you haven’t seen in a while, maybe someone that lives out of state or even in your neighborhood. We have seen significant growth in the West Valley in the last couple of years, even with Covid concerns. As our community continues to grow, so does construction which displaces wildlife in the area. This means that the potential interactions with bugs and wildlife also increase in those active construction zones. You know those four, six, or eight legged creepy crawly critters we all love to hate.

As our weather cools down, we are all eager to open our houses. While it is great to have your patio door open, just remember that you need to be diligent and keep your screen doors closed if you don’t want the flying and crawling creepies coming in! Here are a few things to remember while enjoying our great weather: • The lace wings and an assortment of flying bugs are out and are quite prolific in some areas. With the flying bugs come the spiders which means you may see an increase in their activities. So, keep an eye out for webs! • If you live on a wash or natural area, keep an eye out for predators. Great horned owls hunt at night. Every winter we hear them on the peak of our roof and have watched them hunt in the wash. We recently had one swoop over our back yard early in the morning. Other large birds of prey are also out and about. Coyote and bobcat activity also picks up and both can easily jump a 6-foot view or concrete block fence. It is especially important to be mindful of your small pets when these predators are active. • Rodent activity is also up during this time of year. With reports of pack rats, kangaroo mice and an assortment of other rodents running amuck, ensure that you keep an eye out for water and food sources that are accessible to them in your back yard. Another reason to keep your screen doors shut. On the upside, with our nights getting cooler and below 50° F rattlesnake activity should decrease significantly! Enjoy your Arizona winter!

3 Game Changers Ever wonder why some people are generally happy? The answer may lay in one-word, gratitude. People with an “attitude of gratitude” seem to be upbeat, positive and energized. Here are just a few benefits of being grateful: 1. Improves our physical and psychological health 2. Increases our energy, quality of sleep and mental strength 3. Reduces negative emotions such as envy, hatred, and anger 4. Increases positive emotions such as love and empathy 5. Helps people recover from substance misuse 6. Reduces depression and improves selfesteem 7. Keeps suicidal thoughts and attempts at bay 3 Easy Ways Catch Others Catch someone around you doing something right and tell them about it. As learned from
· · · · · · · ·
Ken Blanchard, this shifts your thinking to one of appreciation and will do wonders for relationships whether at work or at home. Imagine if you came home from work and noticed what your family members did right, and you told them about it. Would they be surprised? More importantly, how would they feel? It is easy for us to notice what’s wrong. But noticing the good…well, that’s a game changer. By making this a habit you will notice more of the goodness around you. You will see more positive and less negative and begin to see what is right in your world rather than what is wrong. Develop the habit of catching one or more people in your life doing something good daily and tell them about it. Thank You Notes Next time you are at a retail or grocery store pick up a packet of thank you cards. Commit to taking a moment, one day each week, and reflect on three people in your life you are grateful for. Write them each a thank note letting them know why you appreciate them in your life. Imagine going to the mailbox and getting such a note. It is a game changer for all involved.

Money Matters During your working years, you’ve probably met the costs of living through your salary. But once you retire, where will the money come from? Is there a way to give yourself a “paycheck” for retirement? There is indeed – but you’ll have to do a good job of managing your available income sources. Here are some moves that can help:
Accept dividends and interest payments. Instead of automatically reinvesting all your dividends and interest payments, begin receiving these payments as part of your income.
Choose an appropriate withdrawal rate. Once you’re retired, you’ll likely need to begin withdrawing from your investment accounts. But you’ll need to avoid taking out too much early in your retirement – you don’t want to risk outliving your portfolio. For many people in their mid-60s, a 4% annual withdrawal rate is a good starting point, but everyone’s situation is different, and your ideal rate will depend on several factors: your age, the size of your portfolio, other sources of income, and so on. Maximize your Social Security. You can begin taking these payments at age 62, but they will be much larger if you wait until your full retirement age, which will likely be between 66 and 67. So, if you think you have enough income from other sources, you might decide to delay taking Social Security – but if you need the money, you may not be able to wait. Consider an annuity. You might want to consider purchasing an annuity that provides lifetime payments. Some annuities are even indexed for inflation, meaning payments will increase or decrease each year, keeping pace with the Consumer Price Index. Finally, don’t rule out the possibility of earned income. Just because you’ve retired from your full-time job doesn’t mean you can’t work in some capacity, perhaps by doing some parttime work or even opening your own small business.
Investing is about more than money. At Edward Jones, we stop to ask you the question: “What’s important to you?” Without that insight and a real understanding of your goals, investing holds little meaning.
Look at all these ideas when thinking about putting together an income plan for your retirement. You may find that your diligence will pay off.
Contact your Edward Jones financial advisor for a one-on-one appointment to discuss what’s really important: your goals.

Unlimited?
How much data do you really need on your monthly cellular plan? To hear most wireless companies tell it, the answer is simple: go unlimited! Mobile data usage has been on the rise over the past decade, even before the pandemic forced us to stare at our phones more than usual. Audio streaming, online gaming and especially HD/4K video streaming have steadily increased; and as apps get more complex, they require more data to run effectively. But are your individual data needs truly “unlimited”? Recent data would seem to suggest otherwise.
all day long - and not use a bit of cellular data. In addition, some carriers promising “unlimited data” will actually limit your high-speed data to just a couple of gigabytes per month. Once you use up that allotment, you’ll have unlimited access, but at much slower speeds. This makes it more difficult to load pages quickly, or to stream video, even though you’re paying a premium for “unlimited” access. While the big carriers keep coming up with creative new ways to encourage you to go “unlimited,” real deals can be found that provide more affordable options while delivering data that fits your lifestyle.

Streaming a full HD game of your favorite sports team will require around 4GB of data. A 10-minute HD video chat uses almost 0.5GB. On-the-spot social media updates, sporting event streaming and remote video-conferencing can quickly elevate a data diet. But with the rapidly growing availability of Wi-Fi, which lets you access a wireless Internet connection without consuming any data from your cellular plan, it’s possible for a user to stay connected
