From Me To You... “He’s making a list and checking it twice...”

‘Tis the season for lists. Lists of gifts to buy and dishes to make, lists of holiday cards to send out, lists upon lists upon lists. Usually lists are helpful for me. They allow my mind to concentrate on whatever task is at hand without worrying about remembering the next task. In my work I make tons of lists! I have lists of ads to update, articles to write or proof, people to email, and then there is the Master List. I have a giant white board behind me in my office to keep me on track each month. It is mostly there as a checklist to make sure nothing gets missed in one of the magazines. But without that master list there would be things missing from one or more magazine that should have been there. Then there are my mental lists of things I would like to do, things like movies I want to watch and books I want to read. I started to buy books theorizing that if I had them in front of me I would remember to read them. What actually happened is that I have a stack of books by my bed waiting to be read. The guilt is enormous. The movie list is just a mental checklist. I see a preview and think, “Oh I would like to watch that when it comes out!” Of course by the time the movie is available I have completely forgotten about it. I was scrolling through Netflix or Hulu, or one of the other online streaming services a couple of

days ago and I came upon the movie The Meg. This movie is an update of the Jaws movies with a giant shark that terrorizes the locals. There is the ubiquitous beach full of tourists to churn through and the boat with well intentioned researchers to upend and eat. My favorite part was when they had finally caught and killed the monster after a terrifying chase scene. They were basking in that post victory glow and one of the scientists noticed that the bite of this shark did not seem to be big enough for the prints it had left on their underwater research facility. Dum dum duuuum!!!! A new and even bigger shark leapt over their boat, eating several people and a chunk of the dead shark. Classic. As much as I enjoyed the movie I have to admit it was truly terrible. Just awful. From the acting, to the plot, to the enhanced computer graphics. Nothing was ever going to be award winning. And yet I enjoyed the heck out of it. Partly because I love kitschy movies like that but mostly because it meant I could check it off my movie list. Finally I can get to the next thing on my list. What is that you ask? Well I am going to pop some popcorn and cozy up with another wild ride, The Crown. Sure it may not have as much blood but it is just as vicious in its own way.

The Bug Guy What happens to pests during the winter here in the valley?

bathrooms, especially during the winter months. The American cockroach, on the other hand, will live outdoors in warmer climates. Once the temperature dips, this type of cockroach will mass migrate into homes or larger commercial buildings such as restaurants, grocery stores, food processing plants and hospitals.

Overview of winter survival strategies of insects When the cold weather rolls in, bears go into hibernation, birds migrate south and we, as humans, layer up and relax by the fire to stay warm throughout the winter months. But, what happens to pests like ants, mosquitoes and termites? Many people assume they just die off, but the truth is that these and other insects often devise strategies to make it through the winter. Learn more about how specific pests survive the harsh elements below.

Mosquitoes: Encountering mosquitoes – and those itchy, red mosquito bites – is inevitable when spending time outdoors during the summer months. But, you might be surprised to find out that mosquitoes don’t fall away when Old Man Winter moves in. Contrary to popular belief, these biting insects overwinter, or hibernate, in protected places like hollow logs. As the weather conditions improve, female mosquitoes awaken and seek out a blood source to feed and begin developing eggs.

Ants: It’s not all that often you see an army of ants marching across the kitchen counter in the dead of winter. However, that does not mean they aren’t nearby. Ants are highly successful at overwintering in the great outdoors, including our own yards. During the fall months, they indulge in vast amounts of food with the goal of putting on fat to survive for weeks on end without eating. As the winter chill arrives, their body temperature – and productivity – significantly decreases, so they seal up their colony and hunker down in deep soil or under rocks until spring has sprung. Once the temperature rises, ants will emerge from their overwintering sites, full of energy and ready to crash the next backyard barbecue.

Termites: What happens to termites during the winter is heavily influenced by the specific species and the climate in which they live. In our climate, subterranean termites will tunnel at a shallow depth into the soil, typically in the winter when the temperature are mild, young male and female termite swarmers emerge from their nests to find a mate and new nest location, which oftentimes can be inside our homes. Submitted by Larry Cash, of Estrella Mountain Pest Control

Cockroaches: Cockroaches have been around for millions of years, evolving into some of the most adaptable creatures in the world. But, are they able to survive the cold weather? Generally speaking, most types of cockroaches can survive year-round, as long as they have easy access to a warm, moist environment. The German cockroach, for example, prefers an indoor humid habitat close to food and moisture sources. As such, this species often makes itself quite comfortable in residential kitchens and 6 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

Question & Silence

Through the years, I have learned a very productive habit when helping people solve problems on their own. The habit is – Ask a great question and then shut up! People are more likely to do something when it is their idea. Asking a great question, followed by silence, allows the receiver time to think of the answer and make it their idea. A great question followed by silence is a handy parenting tool. You allow your child or grandchild to think critically and make their own POSITIVE decisions. When your idea becomes their idea, you have buy-in. In our primary prevention efforts as parents and grandparents, it is essential to develop great questions to GET IN THE WAY of youth substance use or help youth think through what they will do if they are in an environment where their peers are using alcohol or drugs. I suggest doing this in a place with no distractions, so the focus is solely on the topic at hand. This will allow you to control the situation and, many times, deepens the conversation. Circumstances may not always allow this to happen, so be on the lookout for windows of opportunity. A window may be something like when my son and I are just finishing our exercise routine, during a walk, while unloading groceries, or finishing some yard work. I may begin with “I’ve been thinking,” or “this (insert here what triggered the reminder) reminds me of something I was thinking about.”

information and elaborate a little more on the decision. After this, you can continue to discuss with them and guide them to become the person you know they can become. I would suggest having at least two questions prepared when you talk to your child about substance use. Having questions prepared ahead of time will allow you to be ready for the silence and take the emotions out of asking a less effective question. Every situation is different, but you can use great questions to help your child come to their own POSITIVE decision on using substances. Here are a few examples: I heard many teens are dabbing. What is that? What is your plan when you are in a situation when others are using drugs or alcohol? How would using marijuana affect your grades in school? How would smoking or vaping hinder your performance in sports? Author Joe Tracey, is Youth4Youth Program Director and member of the WOW Coalition. For additional information visit http://www. wowcoalition.org or contact him at info@wow. coalition.org

It is also essential to ask an open-ended questions. (A question that cannot be answered with yes or no.) Once you ask them the question, DO NOT say a word. This may get awkward/ uncomfortable for both of you, but continue to be there in silence. Eventually, your child will answer the question you asked, even though it may only be a few words. Once they answer the question, continue the silence, and then process Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

Help Your Child Cope with Disappointment Disappointments happen to everyone, and there is no way to avoid all of them. Here are five ways to help your child cope with disappointment. 1. Be there, but give them space. Children react to disappointment differently. Depending on whether your child is extroverted or introverted, he might want a hug and a pat on the back, or he might want to be left alone for a little while. Wait until he comes to you to comfort him. 2. Turn a negative into a positive. Reframing a setback in a positive light can help to alleviate your child’s disappointment. Thomas Edison once said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work” (Elkhorne, 1967, p. 52). Looking at a mistake or disappointment as a learning experience can benefit your child’s development.

®

3. Try to take your child’s mind off it. Suggest an activity that your child enjoys to help cheer her up. You could also suggest going on an outing. If these don’t appeal to her, let her know that the offers are on the table if she changes her mind. 4. Set a good example. If your child sees you handle disappointment with dignity, he might, too. Taking responsibility when you make mistakes shows your child that you’re okay and that disappointment happens to everybody. 5. Watch what you say. Try not to downplay your child’s disappointment or say something like, “That’s life.” Instead, ask your child questions about how she’s feeling or about what happened. Offer to talk through it if she wants. Submitted by Nicole Bigham, On-site Owner, The Goddard School in Buckeye-Verrado

When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.

There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.” There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown. • The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. • Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times.

• Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, can provide greater short-term sales growth, increases during a recession. • When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current and future sales. An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.” An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits. Another strategy used by marketers is using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. When the economy bounces back, regular pricing can return. Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand provides. Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share. Perhaps the best quote about advertising in a recession came from Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. When asked, “What do you think about a recession?” he responded, “I thought about it and decided not to participate.” -----------------------------We at Estrella Publishing are open for business and here working overtime to support our clients and potential future clients with their marketing strategy. Help Local Seniors Did you know that by 2040, 20% of Americans will be 65 and older? As the population of older adults increases, it’s crucial to recognize and celebrate the rich depth of experience, talents and unique perspectives of such a large segment of the country. Yet, all too often, older people are overlooked and undervalued. How to connect with seniors in your community 1. Call every week Make it a regular habit to call your older friend, neighbor or family member each week, so they have a friendly conversation to look forward to. Ask them about their life, and tell them stories about yours. Gelb says this is an activity SCAN encourages by offering employees paid time off to volunteer. 2. Offer to pick something up Offering to get some groceries or a prescription for an older person can make their lives a lot easier. Don’t wait to be asked for help, as someone living alone may be reluctant to reach out. Just call and say, “I’m heading out to the

store - can I pick something up for you?”

3. Help them stay safe Make sure any vulnerable person you know has face masks, hand sanitizer and the ability to order or ask for what they need. Mask up and offer to help them sanitize their doorknobs and phone after you drop by with a delivery. Help them use video conferencing to communicate with family members or friends. 4. Find ways to keep them engaged Drop by with a care package containing things they might like to do: a jigsaw puzzle, or crosswords. If you’re a good cook or have a green thumb, bring them a sample of your latest dish, offer to help with yard work, or bring them a plant that’s easy to care for - that gives you a reason to stop by to check on them next time. 5. Be their tech support To communicate with the outside world, older people may have to rely on smartphones, computers or tablets that can sometimes be complicated or confusing to use. Teach them how to use apps like Zoom, set up a charging station for their phone or tablet, reboot devices so they run better - or just ask if they’re having any problems accessing their email or using their phone. Making a regular connection, especially with someone who lives alone, can have a huge impact on their overall well-being.

Gratitude

Teaching young kids gratitude extends beyond the holiday season As the holiday season approaches, it is the perfect time to teach young children an important life lesson about gratitude that will last throughout the year. Gratitude is a higher level concept that can be tricky to understand for toddlers and preschoolers, because of their developmental stage, tend to be self-focused. Talking with young children about being thankful for not only material things, but for acts of kindness from others, is one way to help them learn. So, how do we teach our children to be grateful? Here are some tips that Arizona’s early childhood agency, First Things First, gathered from child development experts: Teach children to say thank you to everyone who does something for them – their server at a restaurant, the older sibling who helps them pick up toys, or the friend who gives them a birthday gift.

Tell your kids why you are grateful for them. Remind your children of your own gratitude by using specific reasons why they are special and loved. For example: I appreciate the way you help your brother tie his shoes. Support a charitable event or organization. Whether you are donating old clothes or toys, participating in a food drive, or even baking cookies for a new neighbor, talk to children about what those actions mean to those who receive the kindness. Be consistent. Like all skills, gratitude is not learned in one lesson. Research shows that thankful people are usually more optimistic and are less depressed and stressed. So, when we teach our children to appreciate what they have – and what others do for them – we are helping them to become happier, healthier adults.

Money Matters As the year draws to a close, it’s fair to say that we’ve all learned something about the social, political, and environmental forces that have affected everyone. And, in some ways, our lives will be changed, perhaps permanently. But as an investor, what lessons can you learn from 2020?

Here are some to consider: • The markets look ahead. Here’s something many investors discovered in 2020: Investment prices don’t always move in the same direction as the overall economy. This might not have seemed apparent right after the COVID-19 pandemic struck in mid-February, as the overall economy and the stock market took big hits. But just about five weeks later, the markets began a rally that lasted several months. What can explain this discrepancy between the markets and economic activity? Essentially, the markets are always looking toward tomorrow, which means they are anticipating a stronger economic recovery and the results that come with it. No one can say for sure what the future holds, but you can usually know the market’s opinion by its performance.

• Opportunities will always exist for investors. Although the coronavirus seems unprecedented, the equity markets have rebounded from many crises before it. But even at the height of these events, when the markets might be most affected, individual segments or industries can do well. For example, in the current environment, it’s probably not surprising that some parts of the technology sector have seen their economic activity grow, along with their stock prices. • Patience and discipline can pay dividends. As mentioned above, the stock market dropped sharply in the weeks immediately following the pandemic, but then gained steadily for months afterward. Investors who tried to “cut losses” and exited the market missed out on the beginning of the upturn. Rather than being reactive in this way, you may be better off sticking with a longterm investment strategy, and buying and selling investments only when it makes sense for your situation. For many reasons, it’s unlikely that we’ll see anything exactly like 2020 again. But some of the investment lessons we learned are applicable in every year – so keep them in mind for 2021.
