From Me To You... November is the time of year when we lean into giving thanks. Our thoughts go to the passing of another year and what we have achieved or gained. At the very least you have to find an answer to the Thanksgiving table round of “Share one thing you are thankful for.” At our table we have instilled a rule that you cannot claim, “Being here with everyone.” It is considered a lazy answer and goes against the spirit of the meal. The order of giving thanks is also one to ponder. You don’t want to go to late because all the obvious answers will be taken but sometimes waiting until a few people have gone can prompt an answer you would not have otherwise thought of. My answer this year is pandemic related - just not the one you are probably expecting. I am thankful for my alone time. Having been surrounded by my nearest and dearest for the last year and a half (sometimes in closer quarters than we have had since they were tiny), I have a new found appreciation for me-time.

We all need that space to hear our own voice and make considered decisions without the clamor of everyone else’s opinion. Usually we get that time when kids go to school, partners go to work, or we commute. During the pandemic that all changed. Kids went to school at the kitchen table, partners carved out a workspace somewhere in the house and your commute was a short walk from your bedroom to your desk. My situation is slightly different as I have worked from home for over 10 years. But still. It was an adjustment when I added the layers of kids and the panic that seemed to hang in the air at all times. So I find my most satisfying alone time in the car. I love driving by myself, I can listen to music, or a podcast, or just watch the world go by in a bubble of silence. The beauty of our surroundings can be lost to us as we run from errand to errand, trying to fit everything into the time we have. Do you still see the beauty in the desert? I know when we first came to Arizona it was stunning. A new and exciting vista everywhere we looked. When I try to describe it to people who have not seen it themselves I liken our landscape to a Wile E Coyote and Roadrunner cartoon. I do always have to mention that the Roadrunners themselves are disappointingly small and brown. Although I somehow still expect a 6 foot tall, brightly hued creature beeping at me as it races by. As I think about it perhaps I should be thankful this year that the actual Roadrunner is a diminutive creature that has no access to the Acme Co. and its selection of traps and explosives. What ever you are thankful for this year, we at Estrella Publishing wish you a Happy & Healthy Thanksgiving!

I met with George and Debbie McKinley to learn about the exciting future of PostNet in Verrado. George and Debbie McKinley live in Verrado. In January 2017 they moved from Fair Oaks to escape the craziness of California, to live closer to family, and pursue other opportunities. I asked them why they decided to open a PostNet in Verrado. One day we needed to fax a document and drove to Goodyear to complete the fax. A week later we had to do the same and again, drove to Goodyear. I (Debbie) told George that I wish I did not have to leave the “Island” of Verrado to complete these tasks. At that time I was working for Victory and so we lived, worked and played in Verrado. George recommended that we look into the possibility of opening a store that could provide these types of services to our community. At first we pursued the idea of opening a new Center in Verrado with a PostNet competitor. The more we learned, the more we were not thrilled with that competitor. Then, in God’s perfect timing, we found PostNet in Buckeye, one of the busiest centers in the

Franchise, and it was less than four miles from our house! In November 2018 we became the new owners of PostNet on Watson Rd, in the Fry’s Shopping Center. It has been an incredible journey filled with much joy sprinkled with some challenges here and there. We often joke that maybe it would have been easier to simply buy a fax machine! Fast forward to today, almost three years later and we are now preparing to open our second PostNet (after signing our lease 2.5 years ago!) reaching our original goal of keeping Verrado Residents on the “Island”. The second location will be in the new Fry’s Shopping Center on the corner of Indian School and Jack Rabbit Trail. Lord willing, our Grand Opening is scheduled for January 2022. PostNet is YOUR Neighborhood Pack, Ship and Print Center. Our services include: custom packaging, shipping through USPS, FedEx, UPS, DHL and Freight. We also fax, scan, shred, copy, print business cards, postcards, flyers, posters, banners, blueprints, passport photos and much more. At least one Notary Public is available during business hours, no appointment necessary. Private and Virtual Mailboxes are available for rent. We are marketing specialists to help your small business succeed. Any advice you can share with us? Christmas will be here before we know it. Get your shopping done soon and trust our “elves and reindeer” to assist with your shipping needs. “Sleighs” depart daily from our Watson location. We look forward to providing you with a customer service experience that exceeds your expectations. How can people find/contact you? At this time, come visit us at our current location (see above), call at 623-691-6544 or email at az138@postnet.com for updates on the current location and our Grand Opening Celebration! 5 Ways to Make Family Meal Prep Easier Sitting down to dinner with your family is a great opportunity to recap your days, spend some time together and have some laughs. Between work, school and extracurricular activities, finding the time to sit down together can be challenging. Here are five ways to make preparing family meals easier.
or InstaPot lets you cook a full meal with less preparation.
1. Prepare meals beforehand. Make a lot of a particular dish over the weekend and serve it throughout the week. For example, make a double batch of a casserole or a big batch of soup or chili and serve it every other day so you don’t have to worry about cooking on those nights. There are also many local and national food prep services that will deliver meals to your door!
4. Have breakfast for dinner. In a pinch, serve scrambled eggs, toast and fruit. Waffles or pancakes are easy, too. Eating mostly healthy foods is important, but sitting down with your family is important, too.
2. “Cheat” when you cook. Using frozen or pre-cut veggies and other prepared foods is an excellent way to save time. A slow cooker

3. Keep meals simple. Plenty of fast, easy meals are also delicious and nutritious. The internet has a treasure trove of recipes to suit your family, your wallet, your schedule and your taste buds.
5. Make dinner as a family. Having help can cut down on meal preparation time. Children can stir and roll out dough, and they can mix the vegetables you chopped into a salad. Cooking together is also a terrific bonding activity. Submitted by Nicole Bigham, On-site Owner, The Goddard School in Buckeye-Verrado

Career Change At age 62, Sandy Weber became unemployed when her customer service job was eliminated during the COVID pandemic. A friend encouraged her to give substitute teaching a try. “I didn’t realize I could work in a classroom without a teaching background,” Weber said. “It was the best decision I’ve made in years.”
Those who have lost, have left or are thinking of leaving their job might want to consider a career in the classroom. Schools and daycares everywhere need new talent, as a record number of educators are among those who have left their jobs to care for their own children or choose early retirement. While this puts the education system under pressure, it presents an ideal opportunity for career changers wanting to make a difference in children’s lives. Launching a fulfilling education career is easier than you might think. There are many ways to begin, even without teaching credentials. Here are four opportunities that could lead to a lifetime career. 1. Substitute teachers Every school district needs hundreds of
10 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine
substitute teachers during a normal school year. Post-pandemic, that number is even higher. Credentials for substitutes vary by state, so job seekers should check their state’s department of education or local school district website. 2. Paraeducators There is a strong demand for paraeducators across all grade levels. They often work with children who have special needs by providing support to students in and out of the classroom. 3. Tutors The ongoing need for learning recovery from the pandemic is creating a surge in demand for tutors. Tutoring is a great option for people with a variety of professional experiences and allows for flexibility with scheduling. 4. Early childhood educators Working with infants and young children is fun and creative. While early childhood teacher positions may require certifications, assistant, substitute or aide roles are accessible in these settings, offering steady part-time or full-time work with infants, toddlers and preschoolers. Many positions demand a high school diploma or G.E.D., but any work environment featuring children will also require a background check. Employers provide information about the vetting process or may arrange it for candidates.

The Bug Guy
Since now is the time of year that mice and rats tend to move indoors in search of food, water and shelter, it’s important to be aware of the signs of a rodent infestation. The National Pest Management Association put together the following list to help determine if your home is indeed infested with rodents. What to Look For: Droppings: Finding droppings around the home is one of the most common signs of a rodent infestation. Measuring approximately 1/8-1/4” long, these pellets are often left behind in places where food is stored. Homeowners may also find mouse droppings under sinks, inside chewed cardboard boxes, along baseboards and on top of wall beams. Mouse feces can carry harmful bacteria, transmit serious diseases such as salmonella and Hantavirus, and trigger allergies. Mice can produce more than 50 droppings a day,
Johnson
so prompt removal using protective gloves is key to keeping the family safe from the potential health threats posed by these critters. Nests: Rodents prefer to nest in dark, secluded areas where there is little chance of disturbance. House mice, specifically, like to build their nests out of shredded paper products, cotton, packing materials, wall insulation and fabrics. If you see these materials scattered around the home, it might be time to call in a licensed pest professional to perform an inspection. Strange noises: Hearing strange noises, especially at night, can be a bit concerning. Chances are these sounds can be attributed to a family of rodents scurrying about, in the attics. Rodents are especially fond of attics because they provide dark, secluded spots to build nests. Unfortunately, attics are among the rooms in a home that are easily overlooked during the pestproofing process. An actual rodent: Mice can breed rapidly, so if you spot one mouse in the house, it’s likely there are others playing hide and seek. In fact, a female house mouse can give birth to a half dozen babies every three weeks, up to 35 young per year. That’s a lot of mice! If you recognize any of these signs of a rodent infestation, don’t mess around! The best thing to do is to contact a licensed pest control professional to inspect the home and recommend a proper course of treatment.

Verbalize Your Expectations Who has the most influence on a teen’s choice to use drugs or alcohol? Numerous studies on the topic all end up with the same conclusion: Drug and alcohol use among teens whose parents verbalize a “NO USE” message is considerably lower than teens whose parents are indifferent or avoid the conversation. Parent DISAPPROVAL significantly reduces underage drinking and drug abuse. When it comes to preventing your teen from drinking or using drugs, here’s what works best: Have high expectations • Set limits/boundaries • Enforce the limits you set and follow through with consequences • How do we go about this? • Determine what your expectations are. Parents should be on the same page and supportive of all expectations • Give a “NO USE” message when you set expectations and verbalize disapproval of any use • Make it a conversation. Display confidence, sincerity, and eye contact • Avoid setting limits when emotions are running high • The earlier you start, the easier it is • Use the broken record technique. (The same message over and over.)
· · · ·
Let’s set an expectation: “You’re at an age where you may find yourself in a situation where there may be alcohol around or marijuana. You need to know that your mom and I disapprove of you being in any situation where that occurs. Here’s what we expect…” Here’s another example: Parent: “Do you know why I want to make sure you don’t get involved with drugs or alcohol?” Teen: “Yeah, it’s bad for you.” Parent: “Yes, it’s bad for you. But it goes much deeper than that. I want you to be successful, and I know you want to be successful, and I admire that about you. But I also know the one thing that will rob you of success is drugs and alcohol. We don’t want that to get in the way of your success because mom and I care about you, and we love you.” Here’s an example of a non-expectation: “If I ever find out you’ve been drinking, I will…” As a teen, what did I hear? You said, don’t get caught. You never told me not to drink. You must give a “NO USE” message. What you say is very important; how you say it is even more critical. Follow-through on consequences is imperative to your success. With the Holiday’s approaching, Open every night from 5 pm to 1 am there is no better time to Every child seen by a pediatrician practice Get in the Way Tip #1: Faster than the emergency room Verbalize Your Expectations Online registration to get into queue or register for telehealth visit Often.

Money Matters On Veterans Day, we honor the men and women who have served in our armed forces. If you’ve recently separated or retired from the military, or you will be leaving soon, you can be proud of the service you’ve provided to your country. But once you’re a veteran, away from the structure and imperatives of the military, you may need to take greater control over managing your finances and protecting your family. For starters, consider housing. When you were on active duty, you may have moved around frequently and found it more convenient to rent, but you may now want to purchase a house. Assuming you meet the eligibility requirements, you could apply for a VA loan, which typically does not require a down payment and is usually offered at a favorable interest rate. You’ll also want to save and invest for retirement.
While on active duty, you could invest in the Thrift Savings Plan, but when you separate from service, you can no longer contribute to it. Now, if you get a job in the civilian sector, you may have access to a 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan, and you might be able to roll your TSP balance into your new employer’s plan. If you become self-employed or open your own business, you may be able to choose from several retirement plans. But no matter what plan you have, try to contribute enough to meet your income needs in retirement, which could last two or three decades. Once you become a civilian, you may need to consider health and life insurance. Regarding health insurance, you should be able to get coverage through TRICARE and/or the VA, but you also may want to take advantage of employer-sponsored health coverage. As for life insurance, you’ll want to consider your options for your SGLI, such as converting it to either Veterans’ Group Life Insurance or a civilian policy. Your new employer may provide some form of insurance as an employee benefit, but it might not be sufficient for your needs. Entering a new phase in your life can be exciting and rewarding – and you’ll enjoy it even more when you get comfortable with your new financial arrangements. in a circle on a circular stone or Pizza Stone. Corners of wide ends will touch and points will extend 1 inch beyond edge of baking stone. Arrange remaining 8 triangles in center, matching wide ends. Seal seams using a roller (Points will overlap in center; do not seal.) Place mayonnaise, mustard and black pepper in mixing bowl. Chop turkey. Slice celery. Snip parsley. Add turkey, celery, parsley and cranberries to mixing bowl. Grate cheese into batter bowl. Mix filling. Scoop filling over seams of dough, forming a circle. Coarsely chop walnuts; sprinkle over filling. Beginning in center, lift one dough triangle across filling mixture. Continue alternating with outer triangles, slightly overlapping to form wreath. Tuck last end under first. Add egg white to a small bowl. Lightly beat egg white; brush over dough. Bake 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
