From Me To You... The world is full of distractions. As I sit down to write this column, for example, I am listening to music (brain building Grieg but admittedly it is a distraction), looking out the window at my neighbors washing their vehicle, smelling my breakfast cooling on the counter, and a myriad of other small things.
start to help each other. Even the hosts get in on the act. “What can I do to help dear?” They often ask, grabbing a large bowl or sifting an ingredient. And when the time draws to a close all the contestants jump into action. “I’m done, love, what can I do?” Or “Let me put those on your plate for you!” One time a contestant noticed an oven that had not been turned on and she One distraction that I love is television. In helpfully told her fellow baker as she turned it particular cooking shows. There is nothing more up to the correct temperature. I love it! It is their enjoyable to me than watching other people cook competitive camaraderie that makes me smile. and thinking that if I had the time or the patience My husband doesn’t understand it at all, shaking I too could make a perfect Mille Feuille or Beef his head in bemusement. “Don’t they realize this Wellington. I am also realistic enough to know is a competition?” he mumbles under his breath that I probably shouldn’t try them if I want to keep as he walks away. the waistline I have worked so hard for. I know some people who cook for others and do not eat After watching Bread Week I decided it was high anything themselves. Not me. I am the ‘taste a time to get back into the kitchen and whip up a little as you cook then dig in when it is ready’ kind country loaf. In my youth I baked all the time. I of person. joke about Mille Feuille but I can actually make it, rough puff pastry and all. Now this baking One cooking show that I delight in is The Great occurred at a different altitude and hemisphere British Baking Show. Not only is there a cornucopia so the ingredients are not at all the same. Did of delightful food, but the contestants are a joy to you know that flour contains different amounts watch. They all get their instructions and off they of gluten depending on where you are in the go. Then something wonderful happens. They world?? Something to be aware of if you are making bread. Needless to say, my recipes no longer work, so I scoured the internet and set to baking. The first day (I had forgotten how long it takes to make bread) yielded one sprained wrist (kneading accident), flour in my eyes and a slightly dense loaf. Not to be defeated I ate it with as much butter as I could slap on it and the next day I adjusted my kneading, proving and baking times and I managed to bake a pretty decent loaf of bread. I think I may try to make Beef Wellington after all. Someday...

Elevate Your Evening
Whether you’re hosting a sit-down dinner, a family-style meal or a cocktail party, offer unique food and drink choices to suit the season. A charcuterie board is a great start - all you need to add are some stand-out drinks to make an impression.
1. Create a charcuterie board. Charcuterie boards can be appetizers or the main attraction at a cocktail party. Select cured meats like salami and prosciutto along with spreadable choices like pate, plus an array of cheeses. Choose cheeses to appeal to every palate. Add sliced French bread and/or crackers, with accompaniments like olives or fruit. Round out the board with little dishes of mustard, honey or quince paste. Get creative as you arrange everything on a board or platter. The idea is to provide guests with a variety of seasonal flavors they can mix and match in fun ways
2. Punch up your party. Make a delicious Rum Punch ahead of time and empower your guests to serve themselves: Rum Punch Ingredients: 3 ounces Angostura 5 Year Rum 1.5 ounces lime juice 3 teaspoons brown cane sugar 1 dash Angostura orange bitters 4 dashes Angostura aromatic bitters Garnish: lime wedge, grated nutmeg, maraschino cherry Instructions: Shake all ingredients and strain into ice-filled glass. Garnish with lime, cherry and nutmeg. 3. Sugar and spice and all things nice. For an easy dessert you can make well in advance, offer guests a platter of chocolate truffles or freshbaked cookies. Another fun option: Cut squares of ready-made puff pastry, add your favorite jam, fresh fruit, chocolate or nut spread, then fold the dough, seal with wet fingers and bake on parchment paper at 400 degrees for about 10 minutes. There’s no reason fall entertaining can’t have the same fun and flair as summer soirees. With great food and drink choices, the possibilities are endless.

Everyday Celebrations If you look at most people’s calendars, the days that stand out are the big ones - national holidays, anniversaries, graduations - in other words, those occasions that almost require special parties, rituals or ceremonies. But the truth is, it’s the everyday moments that people remember, and that are worth cherishing. Why wait for a “big” reason to celebrate the everyday act of living? Here are just a few ways you and your friends or family can elevate the small but special events that truly make life wonderful.
your favorite cheeseburgers, pork chops, juicy steak or filet mignon - tonight is a good night to enjoy a favorite meal as your reward.
Making a new friend You recently met someone you think could become a great friend. It gets harder to make new friends as adults, so why not nurture your new relationship in a memorable way? Invite him or her over for a casual lunch.
Girls’ lunch How long has it been since you last invited your best pals over for a visit, just because you felt like it? Why not throw together a quick lunch party on the weekend for a couple of your favorite friends? Serve take-out on your most beautiful dishes - spending time together is the most important part, so don’t stress about the food!
Nailing that presentation You or your partner just pulled off an amazing presentation for a meeting at work after stressing about it for days, so why not celebrate all that hard work with a special dinner together? Enjoy
Mid-week birthday While you wait for the blow-out birthday plans scheduled for the weekend, don’t just let the big day pass by without any festivities at all. Too busy to bake? Pick up a dark chocolate cake - or at least some cupcakes - at your local grocery store or bakery.
Find ways to commemorate - and treasure - the simple, ordinary days that mean the world to you.

The Bug Guy Scorpions!!
Scorpions are a common nuisance pest in the Southwest Valley that are closely related to spiders, ticks, and mites. Although these pests are portrayed in Hollywood movies as being aggressive towards humans, scorpions try to avoid human contact and their well-known “stings” tend to be accidental. Most scorpion stings are like that of a bee sting, while others can be deadly and cause severe reactions. With 1,200 species of scorpions across the world, it is important to know what species might be lurking in your backyard and how you can avoid a run-in with them. Arizona Bark Scorpion The Arizona Bark Scorpion is the most wellknown species of scorpion living in North America. These scorpions can deliver a deadly sting and are one of a few species of scorpions that has a high level of neural venom that causes general illness for up to three days. As their name suggests, Arizona Bark Scorpions are native to Arizona but also inhabit Utah, New Mexico, and Nevada. These scorpions are yellow with horizontal lines, making it easier for them to blend in with their desert habitats.
tail scorpions get their unique name from the dark brown stripes that line its tail. Like any other scorpion, this species is fast-moving. Scorpion Prevention To avoid run-ins with scorpions, eliminate harborage sites around your home, including woodpiles, trash and debris. Homeowners should also consider removing stones and landscape timbers from the property, and store firewood at least twenty feet from the home and at least five inches up off the ground. Scorpions from the Southwestern United States are also known to enter structures through torn screens and holes and cracks in building exteriors, so it’s equally important to seal cracks and holes on the outside of the home with caulk and repair any damaged window and door screens. These pests also enter homes through poorly fitted garage and entry doors. This information Provided by Larry Cash, Estrella Mountain Pest Control, and the National Pest Management Association.
Arizona Hairy Scorpion This scorpion is the largest species living in the U.S., growing to sizes of up to 5.5 inches. Arizona hairy scorpions can be found in California, Nevada, and Utah and can capture small lizards living in the deserts due to its larger size. These scorpions have yellow legs and a brown body. Striped Tail Scorpion These southwestern U.S. scorpions are native to the Arizona and New Mexico regions. Striped Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

Not Ready For Fido? According to the ASPCA, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters every year. Adding a shelter pet to your family can be fulfilling, but what if you’re not ready or able to adopt? 1. Donate money or product. Many animal shelters and rescue organizations have direct donation links posted on their websites. Monetary donations go toward pet food, medical attention and vaccines for the animals. Animal shelters and rescue organizations also often create Amazon wish lists with desired products. Shelters typically ask for pet treats, toys and grooming supplies. 2. Provide a temporary home. An increased number of animals placed in shelters need foster care before they are ready to find their forever homes. Foster needs range from post-op surgical care to puppy growth care and medical support. Food, medication and other supplies are typically provided when fostering. Contact your local shelter to fill out an application. Once approved, your local shelter will work closely with you to find the right foster pet for your household.
3. Volunteer at your local shelter or rescue organization. Animal shelters and rescue organizations offer numerous volunteer roles, such as dog walkers, adoption support and training support. Many positions don’t require prior experience and can be applied for on your local shelter or rescue organization’s website. Volunteer positions vary in expectations and demand, so there is a position for everyone. 4. Take photos of adoptable pets. Help animals find homes sooner by taking adoption photos for local shelters. Many people search for adoptable pets online, and with a great profile picture, animals have a greater chance at being adopted. 5. Become an advocate. Follow animal shelters and rescue organizations on social media and reshare their content. Talk to your family and friends about the importance of caring for shelter pets while they await their forever homes and share how they can help.

Furry Friends
Thank you to everyone who dressed to impress in our 6th annual Paws on Parade last month. What a fun day of community. We are so grateful for your support! Back by popular demand…One Lump or Two? We are hosting a delightful Holiday English Afternoon tea on Sunday, December 15th. If you are curious about this British tradition, you won’t want to miss this lovely event! For more info and tickets, please visit www.CommunityPaws.org.
Grooming has supported Community Paws for many years now. We are thankful for their partnership. Fred and Ginger, two of our previous foster pups, had their transformational grooming there before their joint adoption. My husband and I have been bringing our fur-kid Fenway there as well. After a morning of grooming, Fenway definitely has a bit more of a swagger in his step at the dog park! Goodyear Grooming is a full service cat and dog grooming that offers lots of special attention, belly rubs and extra TLC. They even offer pet-friendly spa packages with blueberry facial scrubs and toenail painting. Please check them out at www.GoodyearGroomingAZ.com. Your furry companions will thank you for it!
Please stop by the Buckeye Police Department on Sunday, November 3rd from 9am - noon. Community Paws is partnering with Buckeye PD, Legacy Animal Hospital, and Goodyear Grooming to offer free microchipping to the first 200 dogs. Free nail trimming is offered as well! A microchip is one of the best ways to protect your dogs if they become lost. Please make this a priority.
As a reminder, our Junior Division’s next monthly meeting is on Tuesday, November 5th. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month from 4:30–6pm. New members are always welcome to join! For more information, please stop by the Center on Main on Tuesday, November 5th at 4:30pm or email us at: juniordivision@communitypaws.org.

#VeryVerrado Being Thankful
There are so many things in our lives to be thankful for. For starters, our lives! Anytime my wife and I experience a setback like needing new brakes, a flat tire, house repairs, kids needing braces and so on. We have to remind ourselves how blessed we are and that these are only setbacks. Someone today is receiving tragic news such as a loved one not coming home today due to a fatal car accident or receiving news of a terminal illness. Count your blessings! I am thankful for my family. I have an amazing wife who treats me like a king. Ask anyone who knows us. She treats me like a king. I do my best to treat her like the queen that she is. We have 5 beautiful children in our blended family. 3 girls and 2 boys ages 10,12,12,15 and 19. I can’t imagine my life without these 6 people that bring me such joy, heartache, love, anxiety and hope. I am thankful for community. Verrado exudes small-town charm at every turn, full of neighbors who become friends, and friends who become family. I don’t live in Verrado but I do a lot of business in Verrado. I have lived in many places around the country, Arizona 4 different times, New Mexico, Michigan, Nebraska, Alaska and Philippines. I have experienced military base living and small town living. I love the small town feel that you get when you are in Verrado from the neighborhood barber shop to the Coffee shop and the neighborhood grocer. I love all the small parks, children playing, people biking and jogging and the golf carts zooming by. I am thankful for our military that keeps us safe and our freedoms in place. These men and
women risk their lives every day and leave their families behind and say “I will” when others won’t or can’t. Verrado is full of military families that come from all over the world. Please show them respect and appreciation and thank them for their service when you see them. I am thankful for our first responders that keep our streets safe and rush to our medical needs and emergencies. These men and women risk their lives every day and leave their families behind and say “I will” when others won’t or can’t. Verrado is full of first responder families. Please show them respect and appreciation and thank them for their service when you see them. I am thankful for our teachers. These are the people that we entrust to mold the minds and hearts of our children. They obviously aren’t doing it for the money. They do it because they care. Teachers spend a lot of their own money for school/classroom supplies. They put up with a lot from students and parents. Please show them respect and appreciation. They would love to receive care packages like hand sanitizer, boxes of tissues and wipes. Just ask them, they will tell you what they need. Be thankful this holiday season! Being Thankful During the Thanksgiving holiday, we see our family and friends, eat wonderful food, enjoy a few extra days off from school and work, but beyond that... How can we demonstrate to our children the importance of both Thanksgiving and giving thanks?
• First, let’s start by making sure our children know the story of the first Thanksgiving. It is important to discuss this story of hardship, friendship and sharing in an age-appropriate way. • Establish a new family tradition revolving around what your family is thankful for. Have everyone write or draw what they are most thankful for. Together, decorate a shoebox or journal to keep everyone’s answers. Make a point of adding to this box or journal throughout the year, and by next Thanksgiving you will have an amazing record of thanks. Add to this year after

year—what a great treat it will be for the family to read through each Thanksgiving as your children grow! • Teach thankfulness through community service.Volunteering is an enriching experience for everyone involved. It strengthens your community, as organizations that use volunteers often provide services at low or no cost to those in need. Children learn to feel satisfaction and pride in helping others, and it will help strengthen your family bond as you work together to help others. Children create a sense of responsibility through volunteering, including how to be on time, doing their best and being proud of the results. Children also learn that one person can make a difference and to think of others. Giving a toy to a less fortunate child helps children learn that other people need our help. Volunteering to clean up a park teaches your children they can improve their community. • Share. What are some of the things your children are most thankful for? Checking
Success Tip #4 – Develop the Habit of the Check Morning Journal Entry: Today, I have decided to be different. No longer will I wander through life. Yes, I’m only sixteen, but I have decided to no longer live a life of wasted time, self-doubt, second guessing myself, and unhappiness…you know…just existing from day to day. I am going to determine what I want from life; find a purpose and start my journey. Today, I will set some goals. I think goals will give me some direction; something to believe in and be passionate about. Maybe someday one of my goals may even change the world. My first goal will be to “Develop the Habit of the Check.” What is the Habit of the Check? Writing down your goals down on paper and then checking them off when you achieve them. Educator and civil rights activist, Benjamin Mays said it best; “The tragedy of life doesn’t lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach.” Those who set goals understand something magical happens when you put your goals in writing. Immediately following her Olympic and World Record 400m women’s freestyle victory at the Rio Olympics, Olympian Katie Ledecky jumped out of the pool and is interviewed by Michele Tafoya. Katie set a new world record and acknowledged that she fully expected to
beat the record. Michele Tafoya stated, “You are big on setting goals.” To which Ledecky responded, “Yes, in fact my goal for the 400 was a ’56’ (meaning under 3:57). Katie flashes a big smile and proudly states, “Check that one off!” Her world record time: 3:56:46! The interview made it obvious Katie understands the Habit of the Check that Youth4Youth teaches in the It Formula. It is part of a four-step process for easy goal achievement. The It Formula Write I/Plan I/Do It/Check It Here are a few speed tips to quickly energize you to begin the Habit of the Check. Put your goals in writing. Those who set goals understand something magical happens when you put your goals in writing. There is no limit to how many goals you can have. Diversify your life; consider setting educational, career, personal, fitness and health, athletic, financial, hobby/fun, social, spiritual, relationship, and family goals. Start with a few areas. The keyword here is “start” and just for fun; throw in some daily and weekly goals. On Sunday night before you go to bed, spend few minutes reflecting and writing your goals for the coming week. Develop long-term and short-term goals. Everyone is encouraged to have at least one goal that is unbelievable. In Youth4Youth we call this a S.O.A.R. Goal. A goal that is So Outstanding And Remarkable, that if accomplished, you and others would be amazed. Author Larry Tracey, is Executive Director of Youth4Youth, author, speaker and Program Director of the WOW Coalition. Youth4Youth engages youth in developing habits and behaviors for leadership and success in life. Teens practice these skills by promoting their message of respect in their school and community. Money Matters Each year, Veterans Day allows us to show our respect for the sacrifices that military veterans have made for our country. But have you ever stopped to think about what lessons our veterans can teach us about how we conduct various aspects of our lives? For example, consider the following traits and how they might apply to your actions as an investor: • Perseverance – Even veterans who have not served in armed combat have had to persevere in challenging situations. As an investor, in what ways do you need to show perseverance? For one thing, you’ll need to stick it out even in the face of volatile markets and short-term losses. And you’ll need the discipline to make investing a top priority throughout your life, even with all the other financial demands you face. • Willingness to learn and adapt – During the course of their service, military veterans frequently need to learn new skills for their deployments. When you invest, you’re learning new things, not only about changes in the economic environment and new investment
Investing is about more than money.
opportunities, but also about yourself – your risk tolerance, your investment preferences, and your views about your ideal retirement lifestyle. Your ability to learn new investment behaviors and to adapt to changing circumstances can help determine your long-term success. • Awareness of the “big picture” – All members of the military know that their individual duties, while perhaps highly specific, are nonetheless part of a much bigger picture – the security of their country. When you make an investment decision, it might seem relatively minor, but each move you make should contribute to your larger goals – college for your children (or grandchildren), a comfortable retirement, a legacy for your family or any other objective. And if you can keep in mind that your actions are all designed to help you meet these types of goals. • Sense of duty – It goes without saying that veterans and military personnel have felt, and still feel, a sense of duty. As an investor, you are trying to meet some personal goals, such as an enjoyable retirement lifestyle, but you, too, are acting with a sense of duty in some ways, because you’re also investing to help your family. There are the obvious goals, like sending children to college or helping them start a business, but you’re also making their lives easier by maintaining your financial independence throughout your life, freeing them of potential financial burdens. Military veterans have a lot to teach us in many activities of life – and investing is one of them. So, on Veterans Day, do what you can to honor our veterans and follow their behaviors as you chart your own financial future.
At Edward Jones, we stop to ask you the question: “What’s important to you?” Without that insight and a real understanding of your goals, investing holds little meaning. Contact your Edward Jones financial advisor for a one-on-one appointment to discuss what’s really important: your goals.

WHERE AND WHEN FIREARMS USE IS OK Quality of life attracts people to the great city of Buckeye and quality of life keeps them here. Surrounded by the quaint, historic neighborhoods and beautiful master planned communities, Buckeye is flanked on all sides by state and federal lands that provide wonderful recreation spots. Shooting and hunting are popular sports in the surrounding areas but there are things you need to know before you go. Primarily, per Arizona Revised Statue 13-3107, it is illegal to discharge a firearm within or into the limits of any municipality. A person who violates the law is guilty of a class 6 felony. Regulations on state lands fall under the jurisdiction of Arizona Game and Fish. There are also federally owned properties surrounding Buckeye that are regulated by the Bureau of Land Management. Dove season is when many residents hear gunfire and wonder if the activity is legal.
Early dove-hunting season kicks off September 1 and runs through September 15. Late dovehunting season starts November 22 and runs through January 5. The greatest number of doves and dove hunters usually congregate in the state’s agricultural areas. For more information about dove hunting and the legal parameters, visit azgfd.org. Title 17 of the Arizona Revised Statute addresses Game and Fish laws. Hunting season or not, A.R.S. 17-309 A.4 states that it is unlawful to discharge a firearm while taking wildlife within one-fourth mile of an occupied farmhouse or other residence, cabin, lodge or building without permission of the owner or resident. Another section of Title 17 prohibits the discharge of a firearm or shoot any other device from a motor vehicle, aircraft, train or watercraft. It is also illegal to discharge a firearm or shoot any other device, on, from, across or into a road or railway. The Buckeye Police Department fields questions all the time about gunfire in the undeveloped areas that border the city. Residents also questions whether it is ok for their neighbors to use BB guns or other types of weapons to eradicate pigeons. The simple answer to that is, no. The Code of Ordinances of the City of Buckeye regulates the use of other weapons that discharge projectiles. Section 10-2-7 B reads: It shall be unlawful for any person other than a public official in the exercise of their duties, to discharge any air rifle or archery equipment within the corporate limits of the city.
